I liked The Cosby Show because of how groundbreaking it was in it's presentation of an upper-middle-class nuclear African-American family(and not only were both parents in the home but one was a doctor and the other was a lawyer)but I don't know that I ever personally liked Bill Cosby, himself or that I ever found him to be that funny. And also, the condescending attitude towards younger black comics, like how he lectured Eddie Murphy about using profanity in his jokes and talking down to black people with his infamous speech back in 2004 just made me look at him in a completely different light. There was a lot of popular comedians that I never found funny even as a child. Like sitting around with my family watching Cosby or Three Stooges as a kid and just being dumbfounded as everyone around me was practically in tears from laughing so hard. It felt corny then and corny now.

It was 1968, I was a kid and I listened to a Bill Cosby album called WHY IS THERE AIR and I was mesmerized. I probably wore the album out playing it over and over.
They are very different styles of comedy. I've no problem saying Cosby was at times a tremendously funny guy. Particularly his really early stuff. Bill Maher though, can be very very funny when hes not trying to preach. He can punch up with the best of them and many of his stand up routines are very good. The problem he has though is that most of his 'comedy' bits on real time are canned shit made up by his writers and you can even tell when he says something he didn't find funny.

Dangerfield, Carlin, and Rickles are 3 old school comedians (3 DIFFERENT comedians) who are all rapid fire in their own way. So I think Bill's assessment is dubious at best.
I saw Chappel live in person in 2005 and he told all long form jokes. And his closer was literally 20 minutes and then he finally got to the punchline & it killed.
Comedy is personal. Everybody likes what they like and don't like what they don't like. I thought Chappelle's old stuff was funnier when he got to the point a bit quicker. But he's very relaxed and easy to listen to even in his long stories.
Oh, I found Cosby funny. I think his childhood/teenager stories are masterpieces. But he's always been a puritan. And puritans have a habit of doing worse than those things they disapprove of. But he was funny.

There was a lot of popular comedians that I never found funny even as a child. Like sitting around with my family watching Cosby or Three Stooges as a kid and just being dumbfounded as everyone around me was practically in tears from laughing so hard. It felt corny then and corny now.

It was 1968, I was a kid and I listened to a Bill Cosby album called WHY IS THERE AIR and I was mesmerized. I probably wore the album out playing it over and over.
It was such a buzz kill when the Cosby show would come on at Nick At Nite. It was so dry. esp after a show like fresh prince.

They are very different styles of comedy. I've no problem saying Cosby was at times a tremendously funny guy. Particularly his really early stuff.
Bill Maher though, can be very very funny when hes not trying to preach. He can punch up with the best of them and many of his stand up routines are very good.
The problem he has though is that most of his 'comedy' bits on real time are canned shit made up by his writers and you can even tell when he says something he didn't find funny.

I've never found Maher "funny" either but the majority of what he says is true and insightful. He's like a dad that's trying to teach you a lesson but tries to slide a corny joke in to break up the tension of the moment.

Comedy is personal. Everybody likes what they like and don't like what they don't like. I thought Chappelle's old stuff was funnier when he got to the point a bit quicker. But he's very relaxed and easy to listen to even in his long stories.
Oh, I found Cosby funny. I think his childhood/teenager stories are masterpieces. But he's always been a puritan. And puritans have a habit of doing worse than those things they disapprove of. But he was funny.
