  • This week it's V8 vs. Ecoboost! We race the all new 2018 Ford F-150's, both with the new 10-speed automatic! 3.5L vs. 5.0L! This one is sure to generate some comments :) Thanks for watching!
    *There's been some questions about driving these before breaking in, both trucks were past the break in mileage before the filming of this video. It's not uncommon for dealers to use new vehicles as "demos", and have hundreds, if not a few thousand miles on them but still be sold as "new", and the warranty starts at the time of the sale, regardless of mileage.

    The Ecoboost had a lot of trouble spinning off the line in the first video, which is logical given it produces much better torque at a low rpm than the 5.0. Once they put them in 4wd, the Ecoboost was the clear winner. Most of us aren't buying a truck to drag race, and either the 5.0 or the 3.5 will do just fine. Comes down to personal preference.

    Where I live eco-boost will stomp the 5.0. Live at 7560ft and the mountain passes are even higher. Living at altitude the ecoboost is the only way to go!!

      I can’t speak for this particular year truck but most of the F150 eco-boost has better towing power and pounds of torque.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      After watching this I’m definitely liking the 5.0 more. I thought that there was a fairly large performance differential between the two, but maybe the update and new transmission helped unlock the Coyote’s potential. 3.5 is a great motor too, but I prefer natural aspiration and relative simplicity.

    • @satalac
      @satalac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      If you're doing a lot of towing, get the 3.5. If you do occasional towing, the 5.0 is still plenty stout, plus it just sounds so much better.

    I have a 2018 with the 5.0 wouldn't have it any other way except pair it with the 6spd, the 10spd is weird. I've played with the driving modes and found in ECO mode it does shift smoother. In Sport mode its an absolute joy and reminds you of a super car with the exhaust opening up and going through the gears hats off to Ford for that mode.

    Just bought a 2017 XLT Roush with the V8 and that thing rides and runs faster and better than the two Sierra 1500’s I had before it. It’s scary fast, and sounds like a beast with that Roush Cat Back, I love it !

    I drove and towed my RV with both of these engines in a 4 door 4wd truck before I bought and the 5.0 sounds great but I’m telling you know the 3.5 ltr walks all over the 5.0 while towing all while getting better gas mileage. I ended up dealer locating one in 2wd with 3:73 rear gear with the 3.5 ltr and holy hell it is a monster compared to the 4wd 3:55 rear gear 3.5 ltr.

    I have owned both a 2011 with the 3.5 and currently a 2016 with the 5.0. They both have their plus's and minus's. I towed a 22 ft loaded trailer from Georgia to Pennsylvania and at 75 mph i was getting 7.3 mpg with the 3.5, i slowed to 65 and increased the mpg to 11.8. It rarely downshifted going up hills but the gas gauge would tell the tale. The 5.0 loaded the same got 13.5 mpg but would need to rev above the 4k range to pull the hills and would constantly downshift. The truck i had in the middle of these 2 was a 6.7l powerstroke in a F-250, it would make you forget you were even pulling a load and would get almost 17 mpg pulling the same trailer but i really didn't need that much truck. Someone else said if you were pulling all the time you need a truck like that and they are correct but i only pull something once or twice a year. Overall the 3.5 is impressive for what it does but i prefer the sound of a V-8 and feel that the long term ownership costs will be less due to the turbos but that is just a personal preference. BTW i paid a premium price for both engines, in 2011 the Ecoboost cost an additional 1100 dollars (5.0 was 550.00 extra) and in 2016 the 5.0 cost 1585.00, the 2.7 ecoboost free and the 3.5 was a 700.00 option i believe, So factor that in to your decision.

    I have a 5.0L 2016 ford f150 and I love it but wish I went with the 3.5L for that year but man that 10 speed 5.0L keeping up with those turbos. Impressive. Mine now has a larger intake manifold, aftermarket air intake K&N, tuner and 3.5" exhaust. It does pretty well now and I've won a few races against a 3.5L with a tune.

    Performance is nearly identical, it appears. The 5.0 will outlive the ecoboost by a long shot. Talk to your mechanic before you buy. If you're trading the truck in every year it doesn't matter. But if you plan to keep the truck a long time, 5.0 is the only way to go.

    Put a tune on those with no other modifications and you'll see the difference very quickly. Use an MPT tune and the coyote will gain 40ish HP and the ecoboost will gain 100+. V8 sounds better, can't deny that but if you tune, put in 4wd, load engine to max at launch the ecoboost will humiliate a coyote every time(in stock form).

  • @GuyFromJupiter
    @GuyFromJupiter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +205

      ecoboosts are heavily tq limited with he load to tq and inverse tq to load tables. You can tune both trucks, but the 3.5 will win all day every day by "a lot" The 3.5 is a tq monster, but it's held back by ECU as I mentioned. Really wish you could get t he 2nd gen 3.5 in the mustang as an option.

      The coyote has lots of top end. When you rev it out, that's when it shines. The ecoboost has little top end compared to the Coyote. If the Coyote had Mustang cam profiles. The Coyote would spank the ecoboost all day.

    Just bought a 2018 with a 3.5 ecoboost. Very quick truck. I also have a 7.3 Superduty (diesel) with perfomance mods(15 MPG) as well as a F-250 with the high output 460(7 MPG). That little 3.5 is quite a bit quicker than my other two trucks. It pulls 9,000 pounds as well as my Superduty. The 3.5 will supposedly tow 13K. The kicker is the mileage. Freeway cruising is hitting 23 mpg. 10 speed auto trans. I'm loving it. If it runs 200K miles I'll be super happy.

Sure tune the 5.0 and it will be faster but tune the eco boost and you got a weekend drag truck that can run low 13s high 12s with no other modifications needing to be done.

      I love the sound of the 5.0 its a great engine. I know allot of these guys opinions are swayed by what they grew up with. Most have probably never driven a decent turbo charged vehicle. I have driven lots of both huge V8s and great little turbo four bangers. The world unfortunately will be leaving large displacement engines behind. I for one love the new Ford Turbo trucks and for people into modifying their rides, turbos offer far more increases in power than N/A engines can and for allot less dollar per HP. If only my truck sounded as sweet!

      joel I’ve thought that for quite some time... Problem is, you can’t make it faster than the Mustang... The first Turbo 4cyl Mustang back in the 80s had to be detuned to not over take their golden boy 5.0
      See what I’m sayin? It’s a shame tho, maybe one day we will see that drivetrain setup in the Mustang first. Also price point, maybe they aren’t quite there technology wise to make it, and offer it, at a competitive price point yet.

    I’ve test drove the older 3.5 ecoboost and was really impressed by it. Now the 2nd generation ecoboost with the 10 speed behind it is a whole new animal.
    Personally I chose to go with the 2.7 ecoboost because I rarely tow, make a long commute to work, and it was designed to be turbocharged from the get go. So far I’m impressed with how quick it is compared to my 2014 ram. It feels faster than the ram did even after I tuned the Hemi. Plus it gets way better gas mileage. I was averaging 14 mpg on a 93 octane tune on the Hemi, and 20 combined on the ecoboost. The ecoboost still isn’t even broken in yet and I can tell the gas mileage is going to get even better.

    I have a 2012 f150 with a 5.0. I had the door painted, so I got a rental truck. It was a new Ecoboost f150. Not only was my truck much quicker. It has much better fuel economy. 19.5mph vs 16.7mph. I believe the v8 is the way to go.

    Both are great motors. A lot of you guys are splitting hairs. Both perform nearly identical so it’s more just what you want. I personally got the 3.5 EB because I love the sound of them turbos. I read somewhere online the turbos are only running at 60% capacity? For reliability reasons- would make sense. Either way my truck is a lease. It’s purpose in our life is for vacation. Not a daily driver.

    I used to own one bad ass 5liter mustang. Now I own a expedition EcoBoost and I gotta admit that the EcoBoost is a sleeper. If Ford would put that EcoBoost technology with a 5.0 instead of a supercharger it would make a unstoppable beast of a machine. Hey Ford, let me know!

    • @gregoryfaulkner5345
      @gregoryfaulkner5345 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do so many people keep asking for a turbo charged 5.0 Liter? It makes no sense. Often it's the same people that diss a downsized turbo and spreads turbo hatred throughout the internet that gets all excited about a V8 turbo. The whole strategy behind a downsized turbo or super charger is that when the engine is not under great load, the turbo(s)/super charger will not spool or boost power and add fuel, and then it has the advantage of a smaller displacement engine for better mpg; but turbo charging can actually serve only to hurt the mpg of any gas-powered engine at any given displacement or cylinder arrangement. So for instance, a 3.5L V6 that is naturally-aspired would actually get better mpg than a turbo charged 3.5L V6 in a pickup truck; but it would not have the performance of the capability or torque needed for a hard-working 1/2-ton. So the strategy is to find a balance where the turbo charged, downsized engine can do the work necessary when needed and get better mpg when not needed. If you plant an engine in a pickup too small, the turbo will spool even in normal driving and there will be no advantage; maybe even worse, which is what I foresee with the new Ranger and the 2.3L and is the reason why those with the 2.7L Ecoboost in a Lariat and 20" rims get average mpg whereas my near base truck with the 2.7L can get right in the meat of the EPA estimate. On the other hand, if you plant a charged engine in a pickup that's too large, then there would be no engine displacement advantage and so it could not return better mpg under any circumstance. So if you turbo charge a V8; plant it in a half-ton pickup, then it is not possible to get better mpg; it would likely do much worse. They're trying to do better; not worse. The Coyote is already allowing for the most capable pickup in the industry for payload and near the top for towing, it's already competitive with respect to horsepower and torque with other brands, especially when considering power-to-weight ratio; it's the V8 mpg leader; and so why would you need more than what it's already producing for performance and capability. Like I said, unless you're buying stock vehicles to support your drag racing hobby; you're trying to get 3/4-ton duty out of a 1/2-ton, then I don't understand why people would ask for a turbo charged V8 in a pickup truck.

  • @ramivalencia
    @ramivalencia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 2013 Fusion has the 2.0L Ecoboost engine and it really is a blast to drive. It has all of the power it needs to propel a 3500 lbs vehicle in a hurry. The horse power and torque output from that little turbo is very impressive. But fuel economy is much less stellar. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's definitely not great either. At 26.9 MPGs, I would say it's decent.
    So, when choosing between the Ecoboost and coyote engine, price would probably be the deciding factor for most people.

    5.0 for me. I work on these things for a living, rather i work on ecoboosts for a living. They dont have any big issues, but the coyotes just get oil changes and back they go. I honestly hope the new diesel puts a dent in EB sales. The EB is just trying to be a gas and a diesel at the same time, and it just doesn't work like that.

I worked on a few ecoboost F150's and for one they are a pain to work on and second they always seem to have some issue with the turbo system be it the turbos themselves or the intercooler/plumbing.

      Andrew, I think it's awesome you're a GM fan I am sure there is good reason. Forget GM vs. Ford for one second this is turbo vs. NA engine. The turbo has more torque down low, the NA engine has more horsepower up high. So what happens is the turbo takes the NA engine off the line and the na engine catches up. And there are video's out there that show this is what happens.

    Strange, in the last F150 even the 2.7 could beat the Coyote. Still I'll always back the Coyote, its cheaper, more reliable, easier to work on and less to maintain. Just a simple tune will make it put down as much torque as the 3.5. Not to mention you can always boost the Coyote, and it will always sound better

    I have a 2013 EcoBoost FX2 Sport. Put a MPT Custom Performance Race tune in it, and it is an absolute beast. I can break traction on dry roads, TC on, going 60 mph. I've done little road races with several different vehicles and haven't lost yet. I've outrun dodges, diesels, chevys, a Camaro, and kept up with a Corvette while I had 300+lbs in the back. The Corvette though was probably a 2003-2007 model year. I don't really know I don't pay much attention to the vet. Anyway, it's a monster of a truck. The gains put me at around 430hp and 550tq.

      I don't know why Ford does not offer that 5.0 Ecoboost in all honesty not necessarily for the f150 but f250. It would probably get about same mpg as the 6.2 but you'd have way more torque. Some people don't want a diesel (I am not knocking them by the way, their usually good for 500,000 give or take), but when something breaks it is usually going to be a lot more expensive then a gas engine is too fix. They could have the reliable tuned in the f250 and go a little wild on the Raptor tune. And I know you can add a turbo yourself but their is something nice about the factory proven reliability.

Nearly every owner stops short of that. Up to that point I think the EB has the advantage, though my preference still falls towards the 5.0. If I needed more, that money would go into a 3/4 ton.

    • @ramrunner3199

      Alan Bowers well if you take into consideration the up charge for the ecoboost it’s really not all that bad. And sorry man no way even a heavily tuned eco could run with a supercharged 5.0. Especially when u wanna look at a stock eco pushing well over ten pounds of boost. Just 5 pounds of boost to that v8 and the game is over. I have a single cab short bed hemi ram with 8 speed/3.92 gears bone stock I ran 13.8 sec. fully bolted still Na best run of 12.76 sec. can’t wait for my some forced induction:) also take into consideration how many problems the eco has had. Il take a v8 anyday. Push come to shove that v8 will make way more power then the eco could ever handle
