Truck airbags Fabrication and Welding

  • In this one, we take on a pretty good challenge. We modify some factory airbags to work with a Dodge diesel pickup with lowered suspension. We use the Hypertherm plasma cutter to scarf the brackets of, and Short circuit mig welding to weld it all together. Luckily the customer didn't have to revert to changing the suspension back to factory.
    Hope you guys enjoy! Thanks for watching!

    Great video. You should use jack stands when your under the vehicle. Safety first.

    I remember fighting my first airbag install, next one support the frame and let the suspension hang.

    Those are some wimpy looking rear spring packs. I liked this video because it brings variety to the channel, wider crowd. I like the fact you didn't rely on any abrasive wheels to cut out the old mounts. Skills with the p-torch! Keep up the good work!

      I try to put a variety of the different types of projects that I do on the channel. Being able to use a torch on vehicle fab is a must IMO. Thanks for watching!

    I-carumba, I''ve seen a lot ov slang burns, but none like that. Whe I was building aluminum moose bumpers for semi trucks we used to get that contamination all the time. Never did figure it out. We where using a nitrogen mix with the push pull mig gun. It's enough to drive you batty, especially when you have to put out a show quality product. I'm glad you where able to figure it out from a previous problem , now I will store this information in the ol memory bank. Nice work on the air bag mod.👌

      Thank you sir. I guess I need to invest in some leather sleeves for welding overhead. I’ve never heard of using a nitrogen mix on aluminum, that’s interesting. I guess the argon thing, although it was extremely frustrating, now I know to pay more attention to it. I definitely got an education out of that one. Thanks again for watching!

      I am probably wrong about I being nitrogen its been a few years, I'm thinking it's probably a nitrous mix. Sorry for the miss information.

    Seems like getting bad argon is becoming common... At least in my area anyway... Glad you figured it out. God bless.

      Thanks man, I completely agree. I’ve talked to a couple of guys around here in the same line of work, and they said the same thing. Seems like quality of work is declining everywhere. God bless you and yours as well. Thanks for watching!

    Great work! Great quality! putting truck back to factory height would of been less headache in my opinion, really only needed to put factory block back in rear, then you could of left the bag mounts the way they were. But we are welders! custom fabrication is always the best

    That’s why I always wear my Leather Welding Jacket when I’m underneath any kind of Vehicle Welding or Cutting. I learned this the Hard Way also. I was cutting a Bolt out of a Semi Truck Frame with an Oxy/Acetylene Torch and the Bolt ended up landing right in the inside Crook of my Elbow, and I was in a T Shirt because it was about 98 degrees that day. I about tore my Head off trying to get out from under that Truck at 500mph. The Bolt was glowing Cherry Red when it landed in my Arm, it sounded like a Steak being thrown onto a Hot Grill. For about the first 2 minutes you could see the Threads perfectly burnt into my skin, after that it just became one big Burn. It took that Burn almost all summer to heal up. I’d go to sleep at night and my arm would be bent at a 90 degree bend in my sleep, then the next morning as soon as I would straighten my arm out, it would tip the Scab open all over again.
    It was Nasty, got infected twice. Worst Burn I’ve ever had. So now I don’t care if it’s 150 degrees, I have Leathers on when under Vehicles Cutting or Welding, and always kept it buttoned all the way up, including the Neck Collar, plus a Leather Bib on the bottom front of my Hood.
    My Dr said it was the worst Welding Burn he ever treated. Take my advice and invest in some good Leathers, as you can see that Hoodie ain’t gonna provide any protection at all.
    Great Video!

      Sounds like a bad burn, in a very inconvenient place. Did you at least get a cool design out of it like I did? I definitely do need to invest in some leathers. I will be getting some for sure. Thanks for watching!

    I "almost" burnt down my shop a couple weeks ago. Stray spark hit a towel I had laying on the bench. Didn't notice this 12" flame until I lifted my hood. 😂

    Should have lifted the frame a bit more and drooped the axle to give you more space. Awesome video!

  • @larrybourne4176
    @larrybourne4176 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure if I didn't hear something right in that video. With the dimensions you gave....something like 3" clearance and 4" thick components, seems to me the frame would be mashing the airbag flat against the axle, so effectively the rear leaf springs would be blocked and have no movement. When hooking up the 5th wheel, any lifting would lift the rear of the truck higher than the front and spoil the effect of the lowering. I strongly dislike lowering anything, anyway, and as a hard core 4wheeler, I like them to sit tall and proud.

    • @larrybourne4176
      @larrybourne4176 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Add on to the above: in '02, I bought a new Dodge Cummins 2500/6 speed stick and ordered it with 1 ton Dana 80 rear axle and 1Ton spring packs, but kept it SRW. Put a large camper on it and added airbags to level it up when traveling. They come with the rear higher than the front, so put 2" front spring blocks in to level it when unloaded....then the airbags would compensate with the camper on - with 105 psi. 😒😒 It worked beautifully but with airbags installed and inflated, I only had 3" or 4" of spring travel. The rubber snubbers took the jolt out of it, but it was highly noticeable when going thru potholes, etc., on bad roads. I also pre-loaded the overload springs with sections of logger's falling wedges, which made a huge difference, too. Got pics of that.

      I completely agree. The situation is not ideal, but I told the customer, and he was dead set on doing it, so I did. Sometimes although you don’t agree, you still do it when you’re in business. Thanks for watching!

    Dude, we got 6 bad high-pressure bottles in one delivery a few yrs ago. It's when the bottles sit around for too long after being filled. Gas companies just take them back and agitate the bottles ( High RPM spin with them on their side). It was after that we went to liquid argon and used vaporizers for big jobs.

    • @Freedomfabrication777
      @Freedomfabrication777  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t know liquid was an option. I’ve never used it before. I wonder if that’s more expensive to get into? I appreciate the info, and thanks for watching!

      @@Freedomfabrication777 Videos are great, you have a great shop and alot of talent. Depends on how much argon you use. Those bottles do bleed off over time if the sit dormant but if you use them every day they are worth it. I think we were getting them for $ 300 or so but they lasted a while and the results are far superior to high pressure bottles. Next year we are building a copper manifold and using a liquid bottle in my vo tech shop.
