  • In this one, we have 6 large 316L stainless steel pipe fittings that need to be fit up and welded out. We Tig weld these ones up with the new Dynasty 300 welder. We talk about the process to fit up, and weld out a fitting of this size. hope you guys enjoy!

    You could have easily welded all that in the flat position but chose not to in order to show others how to weld when that's not an option. I appreciate your consideration to us all. I really enjoy watching you grow and hope you can keep being a positive influence on generations to come.

    Hmmmmm pretty good video, couple things, though. maybe I missed it, but did you mention not bottoming out the fitting into the flange? Also in higher end fab shops they'll give you your money for contaminating ss pipe and fittings by putting them on a CS table, not to mention welding with the gasket surface flat on the table I've work with welding inspectors that would have a stroke if they saw you doing that to their pipe assemblies. I'm aware this is how you do it, but these are pedigree issues in the piping industry. Still a pretty good video and a very nice shop and equipment.

    Your spec doesn't call for a gap between the flange and the reducer for expansion?

    Nice looking finished product. One point, and it sounds like you’ve certainly welded more socket flanges than I have but, I was taught to always gap the pipe off the flange 1/16-1/8” to avoid weld cracking due to contraction of the weld joint. Your thoughts, please. I do admire that you did all this without a positioner.

    • @Freedomfabrication777
      @Freedomfabrication777  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. I have heard that before in regards to the gapping, and I’m sure it doesn’t hurt to do just in case. If I weld the fitting onto a pipeline that has heated fluid running through it, I would do it, but for fittings like these, I’ve never had an issue. I’m sure some would argue that point, but to my knowledge, I’ve never had one crack/leak. I’m sure it’s best practice to be safe rather than sorry. Thanks for the watching!

    You may want to invest in a rotary weld positioner with a purge feed integrated into it. This would give you consistent perfect welds once you get the hang of it. They come with a variable speed controller and a foot pedal. I engage the foot pedal (clamp) and then set the speed. This is great for work bench welding. They can be vertical or horizontal…. I just heard you mention a weld positioner!

    Looks really good. I’m not a tig welder. The purging process you used on the root pass was this because of stainless or the tig welding process? What kind of gas did you use?

    • @Freedomfabrication777
      @Freedomfabrication777  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The purging process was required because it was stainless steel. If you don’t the Stainless will “sugar” where contaminants are introduced into the weld. The gas you use for purging is Argon. Thanks for watching!

    Cool video. A trick I picked up on the yootoobs, get some 3/4" copper pipe, cut them in short lengths, split them lengthwise, flatten them out, then wrap them around the jaws of the lathe chuck. The copper will bite into the threads of the half nipple and won't screw them up but will let you tighten the jaws.

    • @Freedomfabrication777
      @Freedomfabrication777  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I haven’t had an issue with it. Plus I machine the surface material off with the lathe, so that should eliminate any chance of contamination as well.

    • @SmokyRibsBBQ
      @SmokyRibsBBQ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For the record 316 stainless already has a very small amount of carbon properties within it as most stainless steels do. People obsess over this carbon contamination way more than necessary. As long as you keep it clean as you go, it will be fine. I would be way more concerned over the fact that he didn't allow a 1/6th to 3/32" gap between the reducer and the flange to allow for weld shrinkage that puts unnecessary stress on the joint and can lead to cracks.
