I HAD TO DO IT. There were so many comments I couldn't ignore it any longer... Taking a break from the character design retrospectives to give my thoughts on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie leaks!

Alex Ro I never understand why they need to incorporate realistic looking/perfect Final Fantasy-like human designs in the Sonic universe. In Unleashed, at least they all mesh well and they look like they came from the same universe

Absolutely not. Pixar is not only a tired style but inappropriate for Sonic. Into The Spiderverse should be their inspiration. Look at all the techniques for conveying speed they use there. I also think that Unleashed's humans were way too exaggerated and that people should be toned down to contrast the animals' wackiness. Not 06 extreme. Not Unleashed extreme. Like Spiderverse people but of course we don't see them that much.

I myself have spoken in length against the movie design, but it bares repeating: Much like Naoto Ohshima(Original Character Designer of the Sonic Character) stated, Mickey Mouse doesn't become a realistic mouse when he's thrown into live action or even a more realistic environment like Kingdom Hearts. He remains the same old Mickey Mouse everyone is familiar with.
Why is Mickey mentioned in a Sonic conversation? Well, in case anyone is unfamiliar with the conception of Sonic's design, he was heavily influenced by Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat, both characters from the early days of animation. And really, looking at the sketches they did for Sonic before the game's release, he'd fit really well in any 1920's-30's cartoon, especially Oswald The Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse.
By forcing Sonic to be realistic, not only do you step into the uncanny valley and make him look much more awkward than if you just went with his classic look, you lose a lot of the core traits that make his design so appealing in the first place. And while you can argue the movie isn't meant for the core Sonic audience, the movie is titled Sonic The Hedgehog and is very likely banking on brand recognition to make a profit, likely from the existing fan base. And let's face it, most of it profits are likely gonna come from that existing fan base, if not because of curiosity to see just how terrible they think the movie will be.
And because they ditched what makes Sonic look so appealing to begin with, core fans are less likely to give it a chance and spend their money. Hell, look at how Boom turned out! Besides the show being screwed over by moving to Boomerang, the Boom Games are the worst selling Sonic Games of all time and the comics only lasted 11 issues, half of those being the 2nd Mega Man Crossover. I personally have no doubts the movie will suffer the same fate, just on a larger scale.
If there is one thing I'm willing to give the movie a chance on is Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Eggman. Both of them are competent actors that I feel fit the characters really well, given their previous roles. The rest, especially the design... Yeah, not fond of it.
I agree, but for different reasons. If Mickey Mouse became a realistic mouse in more realistic environments, that would have set a precedent in pop culture about how to make that transition. Because these characters have existed so long without the precedent (and, indeed, character artists have shied away from setting one entirely because of the potential controversy and work surrounding it) no attempt to make the crossover now will be accepted. It's change, and people don't like change.
EDIT: To clarify, I don't think making cartoon characters realistic necessarily puts them in the uncanny valley or makes them look awkward. I think the weirdness comes from the fact that it's different and hasn't been done.

I don't think I was all that harsh on it... I think it's only fair that we keep an open mind til we have a trailer to analyse but as always the comments section does end up to be a bit of a debate!
Next up for retrospectives... I'm thinking episodes on Dante and Pikachu!

will never understand people's want for a realistic anthropomorphic hedgehog it's complete oxymoron, the more they try to make sonic looks real the less real it looks because the character was never designed to be realistic he was designed to look cool.

No one wants a realistic humanoid blue hedgehog. We’ve been begging for a dedicated fully animated Sonic movie for years. SEGA just doesn’t listen. They could have easily partner with Pixar or something.

The major problems for me are the eyes, lack of gloves, lack of socks, and that weird humanoid build. Not loving his snout either. What is it with covering cartoon characters into realistic versions of themselves? I think that being a cartoon is part of a character's original identity, it's part of the charm that made us love such characters in the first place! I don't see why it's so hard to retain this aspect in an adaption!
Another advantage of going the cartoonish route is that movie would generally age better. What I wouldn't give for a full CGI movie done in the style of most opening Sonic cinematics...
But in other news, thanks for using music from one of my movies! It's always nice to add a bit of drama to things isn't it?

The designers put white fur between his eyes to make it look like his iconic 1 eye. Also puts white fur where his gloves should be.

I do think this design would work as a joke in the movie. Imagine if Sonic used his original design in the movie, and when a sighting sketch appears on the tv, it uses this design. And if course, Sonic would complain about it.

Tyson Hesse is a god. He can make anything beautiful, even the movie design.
The genesis's problem was that it had too many dark and realistic characters,m so they wanted a bright fun and cartoony mascot able to show off the speed of the console and all the colors it could display. Now we have a version of sonic that fills out all the problems sonic was meant to address.
All of them are bad don't know which is worst they are that bad.

theyre all based off of sonic's poses in previous art, the one where he's jumping is from Mania, and the running pose is from Smash 4
The Sonic on the right at 6:21 is how they should have made him look. Sonic's "Movie Design" on the left looks like some weird fan picture you would find on deviant art or something (well they both do, but the Sonic on the right actually looks like Sonic, the one on the left doesn't, it just doesn't)

A lot of movie companies who make adaptations of video games seem to think that the best thing to do is use realistic CGI, since that's what all the coolest movies are doing these days. The thing is, characters like Sonic and Mario aren't cartoony because Nintendo and Sega are stuck in their old ways or because they haven't figured out how to utilize new technology. It's because these characters are MEANT to be cartoony. That's how their designs work. They don't transfer over well into realism.
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Absolutely.

It's... Bad.
The main issue is that it should have either just gone full 'cartoon' (Roger Rabbit but CGI) with either the classic or modern design and let suspension of disbelief do the talking, or full 'realism' in design and just made him a large hedgehog on human proportion hind legs who happens to have blue quills (think Paddington Bear). This halfway house is just... Weird, disturbing, and _why does he have white hands instead of gloves_.
I think the subtlest bit that feels off to me is the belly - The combination of that design for it and the fur texturing looks _weird_ to me, what reads fine on a cartoon design breaks for me as soon as you add any sort of realistic fur textures.
Theyre trying to fix something that was never broken, if they cant get his design right you just KNOW that this movie is just gonna be a Chris Pratt movie with Sonic as a side character

It's like every Nightmare I've ever had fused into one, cloned itself fucked the clone and then made those!
I do like that image at 6:12. I think from that Sonic's new design could work if proportioned better like that. Where he wasn't so fluffy, had bigger eyes (slightly), more cartoony facial expressions, a smaller/shorter body and his fur was only detailed on the back where his quills should be.

It definitely doesn't, since modern sonic has an actual appealing design, and this... Well...
remember when some peeps thought his face would like that of an actual hedgehog because of that one infamous teaser where...you can see his green eye bulging out for for some reason.

Honestly, my expectations are so low at this point that I really don't mind this design at all. I don't know why or how my expectations are low, but for some reason I can just acknowledge the design and move on.

The design isn't inherently bad. I believe that just making his eyes a bit bigger and giving him actual gloves would do a lot.

6:42 I do. It's like what I was explaining to someone online once. Pikachu and many other Gen 1 Pokemon are for the most part, based on the anatomy of real animals. This is why Pokemon, especially gen 1 pokemon, can transition to a live-action/realistic setting easier than Sonic. Sonic is a much more humanoid character, which is transitioning him to a live-action setting is harder to do, while still staying true to his design. This is why I feel like the New Movie Sonic got the perfect balance of making him cartoony with a slight touch of realism

Those fan-redesigns look genuinely good. Which only goes to show how this new design for the hedgehog has some good things going for it, but as you say this realistic aesthetic is what essentially kills it. Just tweaking those eyes of his as shown in this video makes him look like 10 times better. Also him having gloves would have been nice. Perhaps fingerless gloves (that would honestly fit a character like Sonic perfectly).
The main thing I've always been saying is that if his eyes are too wierd when he's along real, non CGI, live action human beings, give himmore real eyes, yes, but the shape can be kept with the use of googles, because if he can get real and realistic shoes and a more humanoid anatomy sensitive athletic body, what's stopping him from A: Having realistic gloves, B: Rocking some cool ass Quicksilver style classic Sonic eyes shaped googles to protect his eyes from the wind when he must be rapid?
Plottwist, people love Jim Carrey Eggman, but still hates that Sonic.
It's sad that the Samus video tanked but it always happen when you make a series of videos with the same theme and i experiencied that.
Hopefully this won't affect you and keep making whatever videos you'd like to make.
Also a Megaman/Crash/Rayman/Bomberman Design video would be cool but do whatever you want.

Why doesn't Paramount give some cash to Dis he and use their Sonic model from Wreck it Ralph, and add some lighting tricks to have it fit in the real world. If they could do 2Danimatiom cartoons mixed with live action in the late 80s with Roger Rabbit, 30 years later should also be possible.

I kinda liked the sonic design they had on that movie poster mock up with Sonic sitting back with Donut Lord on the cop car. It was rounder and the eyes were bigger than when the first trailer came out. I don't think there would have been as much backlash if they kept that one.

I would of been happier if they had the sonic film animated, much like Sega CD.
Honestly, I think it could have been worse then what we have. At least I can squint my eyes and say "That looks like Sonic". But I wish they just used the character designs from Mania Adventures or Sonic Team Racing Overdrive, Especially with how Recent and Popular they've been
God knows what Tails, Knuckles, and the other characters will look like.
