The oil cooling hose and the VVT-i hose would sometimes burst because they were rubber, with possible engine complete failure. As soon as I bought my 2008 RX-350, 85k miles on it, I scheduled my local mechanic to replace these hoses with aluminum. Lucky me, I got looking at TH-cams like the ones with Michael Woyahn above (.. just excellent Michael, keep making them), and observed that my vehicle already had the rubber oil cooling hose and the rubber VVT-i hose replaced by a previous owner with aluminum hoses, even though the Carfax hadn't shown that. When buying an RX-350 a person should learn where these hoses are and visually inspect to see if they are the risky rubber or the aluminum. It's not hard. Good Luck!
This is a very good point! The oil lines were a big problem, so it's really good to make sure that repair was done. Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm glad you found the videos to be helpful! Hope your RX treats you as well as our RXes have treated us!
awoo When we import Toyotas and Lexus to Australia we have to get map updates from a Lexus dealer. It costs over $200AUD and is a fantastic rip-off but Google maps on your phone has better detail and updates for free and a $10 suction-cup holder will fasten it to your windscreen in a better position for viewing while driving so you don’t have to look away from the road to see it.
Thanks for your excellent, informative video. Until 2015, I drove a 2004 RX330 (totaled at 97 k by a drunk driver☹️.) I fortunately replaced it with a 2008 RX 400 h, at 89k. They are both wonderful cars, with no mechanical issues. One significant difference is that my RX330 was Canadian, the RX400h is from Japan. I believe the Japanese car is superior, and here’s one key difference. It’s a minor one, but I feel it’s an important one in a luxury vehicle. My RX 330 was a one-year, dealer/loaner. It had an annoying rattle/ squeak in the dashboard. After the first trip back to the dealer, which didn’t fix the noise, I drove it with the dealer’s “noise guy” on rough roads. They had taken the dashboard apart, spent a couple hours on it, which improved the condition. During the ride, the mechanic told me that in the Japanese models, every part under the dash and in the cabin that rubbed against another part was wrapped in foam. Based on his years of experience with both Lexus and Toyota, the Japanese builds had slightly superior construction and quality control. This was especially true during the time (late 1980’s ?) when Toyota first built their US and Canadian factories. My wife drives a 2017 RAV4 hybrid. Besides oil and fluid changes, the only expense has been replacing the Toyo tires at 53k. It has given us 58k trouble free miles. It was built in Japan. (BTW, I now subscribe to your channel.)
@@mungox1 Bamboo is of course a form of grass, albeit in some cases very big grass, but grass was the early development in the evolution of the flowering plant family that has become what we see as hardwoods today. Hardwoods are angiosperms, as are the bamboo species, the stems of which are both made up of woody fibre, therefore by definition: wood.
I'm thinking about getting a 06 in a couple of week's he also has a 2011 it's newer and more updated but I'll get a better deal on tha 06 just don't like it doesn't come with navigation or Bluetooth connection
2004 - 2006 are all the same, except for the passenger seat controls: 2004 was 4-way, 2006 way 8-way (rais & lower, tilt cushion up & down) and 2007 was 10-way (added lumbar). Otherwise, great job!
Great review. I was lucky to snatch a 2004 Rx330 with 50,000 miles for $7k two years ago. Car currently have 99k miles and I just did my major service that includes timing belt, water pump, lower ball join, and a few minor repairs. This car is a beast and I expect it to last 300,000 miles on original engine.
Thank you! That's awesome! My RX330 is at 246,000 miles on the original engine and transmission, so I don't doubt that yours will make it to 300k. I'm glad your RX is treating you as well as mine is treating me.
Wow! May I ask what options your RX had? I picked up my 2004 RX330 from a dealership in the Chicago area. We picked it up for 12 grand. Fully loaded, pretty much except for the adjustable air suspension. 62k miles on it, treated like a baby. Currently it has around 75,000.
Just bought an '07 350 version in the UK so this was really informative! Got it for £4,000, which is about $5,000. 150k miles with full Lexus dealer service history, it's the SE-L top spec version so has all the toys...nav, swivelling headlights, air suspension, power tailgate etc. Really looking forward to using it and comparing the feel to our 2019 RAV4 Hybrid
Glad you found it helpful! That's a great deal! I'm somewhat surprised they'd offer the 3.5 V6 in the UK since I think their lineup is almost entirely hybrids now, but it's a great engine. I'd be really curious to see the differences between the US and UK spec, too. Enjoy the RX and RAV4!
@@michaelwoyahn2238 no probs! They only offer Hybrid now and have done for ages, think '06 was around when they started on the RX. Spec wise the one I've got is top spec so seems like everything that was an extra is standard on this one...stuff like the DVD screens, air suspension, 18" alloys, sunroof, power tailgate. Only think it doesn't have you could get is adaptive cruise
@@michaelwoyahn2238 there aren't that many over here...I checked and the version I've got, the SE-L, there are only 331 taxed and on the road with a further 24 currently off the road. Think the SE-L was only one with air suspension at the time. I bought it not knowing any of this and feel like I've done quite well! Ha ha
I used to have a Solara Convertible with the 3.3, it was a reliable engine, just a little bland if that makes sense. I never really had an issue with it over 180k miles and it was smoother at idle than the 3.5. My first 3.5 was in my 2008 Lexus ES which currently has 192k. Owning both at the same time, I can vouch that the 3.5 takes the edge any day. No timing belt, better sound, much more spirited, and in my experience has been a very reliable engine like the 3.3. I took this knowledge and decided to get the RX350 instead of the 330 when getting rid of the Solara. The only nerve-wracking issue with the early production 350 (2005-2011ish) is the oil cooler lines, make sure you replace the original rubber hoses for the updated flex-pipe design. If the rubber hose blows, goodbye 350. Then again, if the timing belt snaps on the 330 then goodbye to that engine as well. Keep up with the common maintenance on both and you'll most likely have a fantastic experience as I have. I do have to say, I would have enjoyed the Solara a LOT MORE if they had put the 3.5 in, the 3.3 is bland.
I'm thinking about getting a 2006 Lexus rx330 has the 3.3 in it with like 130,000 miles doesn't have the navigation system but it's nice don't really want to get another bmw truck Toyota products are pretty boring but reliable
My mom has an '08 RX350, and I had an '04 RX330. One slight difference I noticed was the design of the cupholders. The '08 seemed bigger when both "cup size reducers" were flipped down.
The Lexus RX330 was produced from 2004 to 2006, All Lexus vehicles, all models, From 2005 and newer switched to a Timing Chain, so the 2004 RX330 was the only RX had a Timing belt from the second generation. The 2005-2006 RX330 would still be a great choice because the Timing chain was new. The Lexus RX350 has been in production since 2007, when it replaced the RX330 as the main model in the second generation.
This was a cool and very informative video but my favourite thing of all... the 350 has a timing chain! Praise The Powers That Be! I’m Lexus or at least Toyota for life but I’ve never enjoyed the idea of a rubber belts and that mild “within 20K of change time” anxiety is gone! Now that V6 might be the toughest and longest lasting passenger vehicle engine on the planet.
Thank you, glad it was helpful! The timing chain really is a big upgrade! Saves a lot of maintenance cost over the years. The extra power of the 3.5 is an added bonus, too!
the 2GR-FE engines are bullet proof and last a long time.. as long as you keep up with the proper maintenance, these things can last up to half a million miles or even longer.. they are tried and true.
The Lexus RX330 was produced from 2004 to 2006, The Lexus RX350 has been in production since 2007, when it replaced the RX330 as the main model in the second generation and it started using the timing chain.
@@dwsherm1 Okay yes, you are correct I just googled it and I will edit this post, I read an article said that all 2005 Lexus vehicles and newer are timing chain 🤔
So i had a big snow store recently. :D MAN!!!!! MY 05 RX 330 WAS AMAZING IN THE SNOW. Cars legit stuck on the highway, and my car didn't get stuck once! I was driving by everyone in the snow store! 170k miles, and it drives well.
I'm really glad to hear it! These cars are simply fantastic in the snow. Even with all season tires, I have never once had the tires spin without me giving it too much gas on purpose, even starting from a stop on hills! It really makes driving in the snow fun. You never have to worry! The good news is you've got the rest of this winter to enjoy it too!
@@anonymouslyanonymous610 Honestly nothing. Use your best judgment. Test drive it, Bring it to a mechanic to have the vehicle inspected for 120 dollars. Lexus are very good cars. My Lexus RX 330 has like almost 200k and knock on wood I'm only replacing the O2 sensor soon..
the 330's had some engine/transmission issues that made the car shift oddly in certain power conditions. the 350's, I believe, have a better setup. that said, I have a 2005 and it really has been a good car.
M P Good point! I think that is correct because my dad’s RX350 seems to have less odd or clunky shifts than my RX330. I think I’ve mostly adapted to driving the RX330 to avoid those situations, though sometimes it’s still a little odd/clunky. The good thing is I think the actual transmissions are pretty stout since I haven’t heard of many failures with them! I’m glad to hear your RX is treating you well! They really are fantastic overall cars.
@@michaelwoyahn2238 on your 330, next time you have the right front wheel off, check out your low pressure power steering line. the pumps are actually pretty robust, but if the line goes bad, every shop out there will tell you "the pump's gotta be changed". It doesn't. For mine, I fabbed a new line from a steel brake line. You can also do it "the right way" and buy an already formed line. The repair isn't fun but isn't too tough, and it's not a bad idea on the 330's to do as preventive maintenance. One more cheapie tip: if your power steering reservoir is "lacquered", make a little brush from stranded copper wire (the thicker stuff). scrape the sides, then use a turkey baster ($1 from dollar tree) with a small tube attached to the tip to suction out all the gunk.
M P thank you very much for the tips! I actually had a power steering leak that turned out to be that line a couple of years ago. I lucked out and the independent mechanic I take my car to ended up replacing the line without claiming the pump had to be done. I read quite a few stories on forums of people getting quoted $800+ to replace the whole rack for leaks so that was quite a relief! I did notice that the power steering fluid reservoir is pretty grimy to the point where it’s hard to see the level, so I will definitely look into that method of cleaning it! That sounds like a really good method.
My uncle has an 07 RX350 with very low mileage. When I'm done with college I'm thinking about selling my 17 corolla and buying that from him. I thought about getting an IS to replace my Corolla but idk if id want to daily drive one.
Another big difference is the fuel requirement. Per Lexus, the rx350 REQUIRES 91 octane, while the rx330 runs on 87. So you’re talking about $.30 -.40 every gallon, which is a big difference at the end of the year
Good point! We've actually only used regular in both of these cars and had no issues relating to the fuel over 194,000 miles with the RX330 and 80,000 miles with the RX350. You are correct that Lexus does say premium is required in the RX350, but we're comfortable with using regular since their engines seem to be the same as their Toyota counterparts. Definitely depends on whether you are comfortable with this or not and is something to consider!
huh! I actually never knew that the 3.5 V6 didn't require timing belt service, so that's definitely nice to know for someone considering one of these. Have you/your dad been in a 3rd gen or current gen RX? Thoughts on upgrading? lmao
Yeah, I'd definitely say the 3.5 is the one to get. I still love my old RX330, but the 3.5 is an improvement in every way. I've sat in quite a few 3rd gen RXs and actually got to drive a 2018 RX450h this summer and I can say there is a 99% chance I'll end up upgrading to one of those lol. I loved the hybrid actually. It'll most likely a 3rd gen due to the cost, but I won't be upgrading for at least two years unless something big happens to the car. Gotta finish college first haha!
@@michaelwoyahn2238 bruh I have a full-time job making a good amount of money wasting my time in a 12k subcompact car. dang. Do you pay cash or are you financing with a credit union?
@@dylanhughes5944 so the RX330 was handed down to me from my family, but if you’re financing, credit unions tend to give you the best deal! The only thing with financing a used car that’s fairly old is you’ll likely get a higher interest rate. Not necessarily the end of the world especially if you are able to have a big down payment, but something to keep in mind.
Thank you for watching! I can’t remember if I mentioned this in the video, but some unsolicited advice is to look out for the power steering racks leaking, the radiators leaking, and the timing belt. Best of luck with the search!
One thing puzzles me about this video, you said that the RX330 has a different AWD system than the RX350. As far as I know, the AWD system changed to Viscous Coupler, aka Electromagnetic Coupler with the third gen of the RX, and the second gen had the same AWD system with both engine variants. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I'm about to purchase one of these two, and the AWD matters a lot to me, I prefer if you have some sources or links. Thanks a lot. 🙏
"For 2007, all-wheel-drive versions get a viscous limited slip in the center differential instead of the old open diff." From the August 2006 Car and Driver review: "Turning the knob boosted horsepower to 270, up 47 from the 2006 model, owing to a V-6 upsized to 3.5 liters from 3.3 and variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust cams (only the intakes had it before). Acceleration is energetic, hitting 60 mph from a standing start in 6.8 seconds, a full second quicker than the RX330. Quarter-mile ET and speed, at 91 mph and 15.4 seconds, improved by 5 mph and 0.8 second, showing the pay-off from a much fuller torque curve. Packaged only with a five-speed automatic, this Lexus can cut and thrust with the best of them. The go pedal is calibrated just right, requiring only a small motion of your foot to bring on the rush, yet there's no overly eager jumpiness when you're squeezing into tight parking confines. Lexus manners are impeccable. At 4248 pounds, the weight of our all-wheel-drive test car (front drive is standard) is unchanged from before, but it feels lighter and more lively in traffic, thanks to the extra torque, of course, but also to the low efforts required for Lexus steering and braking. Remarkably, the fuel economy is improved, too - 19 city, 24 highway, according to EPA ratings, and that compares with 18 and 24 before. But it didn't improve for us, likely because enthusiastic helpings of the extra torque brought the C/D-observed mileage down to 15 mpg. For 2007, all-wheel-drive versions get a viscous limited slip in the center differential instead of the old open diff. Most other improvements were aimed at the Ralph Lauren set. More sound insulation has been added to the doors, dash, and floor. A sound barrier, tuned to frequencies in the conversation range, has been sandwiched between the glass plies of the laminated windshield, and subtle fairings reduce air-rush noises around the high-level air intakes."
Adding to you, I had to replace all spark plugs along with one of the Ignition Coil. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT COIL “D” MEANS, IT’S THE FRONT CENTRE ONE, NOT THE RARE ONE. ❤
I currently drive an ‘08 350 that was built in Japan on July of 2007, literally right before the North American production of the RX’s was diverted to Canada.
I disagree. The rx350 has an internal timing chain which costs thousands to get replaced. The rx330 has an external timing belt you just flip a few clips take the cover off and replace it yourself for next to nothing
Cogitationes caecae I’m in Australia so all Lexus are right hand drive JDM here but I’m told that Toyota’s manufacturing standards were transplanted to their foreign plants in an extremely strict fashion so that build quality, longevity and reliability were the same.
I'm thinking of getting one of these. Of course the 330 is cheaper than the 350, so it's tempting to go cheap and not worry about insuring the care - just third party. The big question is longevity. Is it foolish to get something over 200,000 km? Or 300,000 km? I know they are reliable but are they extremely reliable over long mileages?
My RX330 is currently at 447,000 km, and while it hasn't been perfect, it's still super solid. From 434,000 km to now, I had to get the neutral safety switch replaced last October which was around $350 USD. I had the valve cover gaskets replaced in February since they finally started leaking onto the ground, but they were seeping for years so that wasn't really unexpected. With that in mind, I would say expect some maintenance if you go higher mileage since some parts will naturally be getting towards the end of their service life. At the very least some seals will be getting older, so leaks are not unheard of. But, even with the issues my car has had so far, I still get in it and drive it like any other car and I don't doubt its ability to get me from A to B. So I would say that I think they are very reliable, especially for luxury cars, over long mileages, but expect some maintenance costs potentially sooner than later and you will be happy with it!
Tell me where you get a timing belt replaced that cheaply, please. PS I own both of these cars, and when the '05 turns 20 I will probably replace it with a 2020-2022. No way I'm paying over $50K for a new one with a four banger and a noisy turbo.
It's actually somewhat common for cars of the era, unfortunately! To name a couple, the fourth gen BMW 3 series from 1998-2006 didn't have an aux input. The Mazda6 from 2003 to 2008 didn't have one either. But there are definitely cars from the same era that have aux inputs, too. Even the other Lexuses from 2008 had aux inputs so it was definitely an interesting decision on their part.
Michael Woyahn I think it’s because they wanted to keep using the same stereo design from the 2004 RX. Of course, the fact they didn’t add aux for the 2007 year when they removed the tape deck for non-Nav cars is stupid seeing as you can easily solder on an aux connector to the cassette input connector so they could have done that nicer/easily by sacrificing the cassette input... At least you can get the VLite for nav cars and a stereo replacement/upgrade for non-nav cars which has aux.
i wonder if theres a huge difference between the 2003 toyota harrier and the rx 330, besides the fact that the harrier has a touch infotainment screen.
Thank you! I don't have a video on the driving differences, but I think they drive very similar! The steering seems like it feels a touch lighter in the RX350, and the gas pedal is also a bit touchier in the RX350. The RX350 is a good bit quicker, too. I think those are the main differences between them!
Michael Woyahn I have the Lexus RX 330 premium plus package and it still drive like a brand new car at 201,500mile! They really build these car to last. Especially for their time.
@@astudentpilotlife That's awesome! I've got just about 272,000 miles on my RX330 and it still drives like it's got a third of the miles. They really are such well built cars.
I just bought an 2003 Toyota Sequoia Limited, and looking to buying a back vehicle. I’m either thinking the 2007-2011 RX350 or 2003-2009 4Runner (4th generation) hard decision.
The 3.5 timing chain is most more reliable than 3.3 timing belt. The 3.3 oil leak all over the engine. The 3.5 one is dry. Talking the same high mileage one.
Awesome video, thank you for making it! Pretty much sold on getting one for my next car. Wondering if you have opinions on which performs better on the highway? Specifically, which has tighter steering and less road noise?
Thanks for watching! I don’t recall a marked difference between them on the highway, but I believe the RX350 gets a bit more sound deadening. Steering felt about the same to me- the RX330’s steering is a bit heavier at slower speeds, but at highway speeds there’s not much difference.
Thank you for pointing out that the 3.3 litre V6 has a timing belt as opposed to the 3.5 litre V6 in the RX 350. In terms of fuel economy, which engine is better? I am considering purchasing the RX 330, but since our fuel prices here in Ontario, Canada are quite unstable, fuel consumption is my only concern.
Saud A. F. I’d say the fuel economy is about the same for these engines. Technically the 3.5 is supposed to get a bit better mileage, but it is a very small difference. I will say too that we’ve only used regular gas in these cars for 168k miles with the 330 and about 44k miles with the 350 and the engines both seem to run fine on it. So in my opinion, I think you can run regular gas in these cars, but technically Lexus disagrees so I suppose run regular at your own risk.
Rewko Andrey congrats on the purchase! Seems like a good buy! One thing I can think of is if the power steering rack has any leaks, check to see if any lines can be replaced. Some lines got replaced in my car for about $200 vs over $800 for replacing the whole steering rack! Otherwise, I’ve had pretty good luck with just routine maintenance! We’ve also only used regular gas in both these cars and haven’t really had any issues related to the gas. Premium is recommended so it may make the car a bit more responsive, but that’s my advice if you’re looking to save some extra money. Hope your RX treats you as well as ours have treated us!
Michael Woyahn Thank you so much! Will check all lines on weekends 👍🏻😃✅ Car been stored in Manhattan for a while, in parking garage, so need some PDR 😅 also we cleaned 🧼 interior for TWO DAYS 🙆🏻♂️😅 (I think the sunroof was open in garage and dust came inside) I will recommend a magic eraser Mr Proper for everyone! Leather like new now, conditioned already✅ So thank you so much 😊 👍🏻😃
The GX has an entirely different purpose, and is effectively a fancier Toyota Land Cruiser, while the RX, particularly more modern ones, are not really off-road cars and are more for suburban driving. If you plan on going off road or hauling things, the GX is better, but the RX is better if you want an SUV for the ride height or want the ability to store a lot/take 6 people with you and nothing else.
I have driven my 2001 RX 350 through blizzards and ice as well as on a ton of loose and rocky off-road trails and even took it all the way from San Francisco to the tip of Baja which included sand, trails, highway and a little bit of everything. It’s definitely not going to compete with the GX but with good tires it’s very capable but in off road conditions. I choose good Michelin All-terrains and have always been impressed. I wouldn’t go into deep mud with it but slippery or loose and it’s going to do great .
Huh, that's a bit surprising to me since mine is pretty quiet. Don't forget about tires too, my dad's RX350 has louder tires than mine and it makes a difference. If you're going for the quietest car, removing the roof racks definitely won't hurt, either.
99 lexus rx 3.0L with 246k miles and running strong.the knock sensors are to shit so check engine is on transmission sensor I think is gone cause it feels like the overdrive doesn't kick in it still runs gd I drive it 50miles a day and no problems this cars are fuking beast
Glad to hear it's still treating you well! They really are great. I've got 270,000 miles on my RX330, and I was putting almost 70 miles on it everyday and it ate up the miles.
Thank you! Depending on where you get it serviced, yes! Most mechanical parts are shared with the Highlander, so they aren't typically too pricey in comparison to other luxury cars. If you take it to a Lexus dealer, services are more expensive than at a Toyota dealer. Say $50 for an oil change at Lexus vs $30 at Toyota. I usually take my car to my local Toyota dealer for services and some repairs, though I do take it to a private mechanic if it needs bigger repairs since they usually are the cheapest.
Thanks for watching! According to Toyota, premium is recommended in the RX330 and required in the RX350. However, our experience says regular is fine. We've only run regular in both (203,000 miles in the RX330 and about 105,000 miles in the RX350) with no issues! Our logic is these are Toyota engines at the end of the day with even the same compression ratios, so we're willing to "risk it" to save at the pump. For my RX330, I've averaged 20.7 mpg over the last 71,000 miles. It's rated for 16 city/22 highway with AWD, and I can get those pretty easily. I've beaten the rating pretty often, but in the winter I typically get a bit less mpg on the highway. The worst mpg I've ever seen was around 16, with a lot of idling and mostly city driving in below freezing weather. I can't fully speak to the RX350, but from when I've driven it, it's very comparable. I think it's rated at 17 city/ 22 highway with AWD. Obviously this depends on how you drive it, so take this with a grain of salt!
I recently bought an 04 Rx330 and had the timing belt changed right away. I can tell you that it’s way more than $600! The quotes I got ranged from 870 to 2100 at the Lexus dealer and everything in between. I couldn’t verify that it was ever changed and it has 180k miles, so…
Hey Mark! Thank you, hope you and your family are doing well too! I use Mother’s Carnuba wax, which is actually the same wax I use on the whole car. It seems to more maintain the current level of oxidation than really make them look shinier. It does help a bit, though. If you’re looking to really increase the shine, I’d recommend the 3M headlight restoration kit with sealant. It made a big difference with my headlights and lasted over a year before getting a bit yellow again without me putting any wax or extra protection over it. It is a decent amount of work, though. This is reminding me that my headlights are getting pretty yellow these days haha.
It wouldn't hurt, but I can't say for sure. I don't think I've noticed any extra wind noise from the roof racks, but I've never driven one without them so honestly I'm not sure. Here's a thread detailing options you can use to fill the holes: www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-2nd-gen-2004-2009/454203-roof-rack-removal-procedure-2.html It seems like you can buy weather strips for the whole roof or covers specifically for the holes.
Congrats on the purchase! The power door button on the left of the dash lets you open or close the rear door from the driver's seat with the power motor! Hope your RX treats you as well as ours have treated us!
Update March 2021. I’ve had to replace my neutral safety switch located on top front of transmission other was corroded hmmmm , in sept with 96,300 miles had to change water pump and 2 idlers. And replaced coolant. I did some research and they do go out early. Early being around 100,000 miles which is weird my 2000 es300 still has original wtr pump as did my 95 3.0 old trim xle. Has the Lexus 3.0L engine in it. Had something weird happen on my skid control, it odd up my driver rear caliper, I took battery connection off but looks like this summer I’ll need to change out caliper. I can see burn marks on rotor.
Ruby Tuesday Yes Japan has always made quality products. But saying Canadians are lazy and have poor work ethics is ignorant and has nothing to do with Japan. Hi Michael, thanks again for the great tutorial video. I was wondering if you or anyone else could recommend a kit or what I would need for adding an auxiliary input in a 2008 Lexus RX 350? The vehicle has navigation and a tape deck. Please let me know. Thanks Tony
Hi Tony! Thanks for watching- glad you found it helpful! I can't recommend a kit for an auxiliary input based off of personal experience, but I did consider the GTA car kit for my own car. A big factor for me living in Vancouver Canada is fuel costs and I heard that the 3.3 can take 87 octane whereas the 3.5 needs at least 91. Is this true?
Franco M We’ve actually only used 87 octane in both of these cars since we’ve had them! (294,000 kms on the 3.3 and 125,000 kms on the 3.5) Premium is recommended for the 3.3 and “required” for the 3.5, so I guess take our experience with a grain of salt, but we’ve never had any issues with 87!
@@francom477 I would definitely recommend it! It is such a comfy car and very good in the snow! Gas mileage could be better, but it's pretty decent for a V6 with constant AWD. I've averaged 20.5 mpg or 11.5 l/100km over the last 96,000 kms I've been tracking it. My RX330 has a little over 442,000 kms on it now and it's still kicking! It has a few issues, but for the age, it's held up really well! My dad's RX350 has 281,000 miles and has held up pretty well, too. For a used luxury car, it's hard to get more reliable!
Thanks Michael for this great video. But I've always had a bugging question which I've not still found an answer to on the internet. Why on earth some Rx 330 have navigation system with some 2008 Rx 350 not have? My close relative is about buying a 2008 Rx 350 and really can't comprehend the reality that it does not have a navigation system. Just like the one you reviewed on this video for instance. Please I'd appreciate a response
David Obembe thanks for watching! My understanding is it’s all about the packages you could get. Both of these ones have the premium package which gets you some more luxury features like memory seats and a sunroof, but still leaves out some options like xenon headlights and navigation. In the end, they wanted you to upgrade to a higher package for nav. That way they could keep prices lower for leases by advertising ones with the cheaper package without nav too. I think touchscreens were much pricier when these cars were new which also makes Toyota less likely to include them in more basic or even base models like they do today.
David Obembe no problem! They do sell kits to replace the radio with a modern double din radio of your choice, so that could be a potential option, too.
Jake Bilag That seems like a good deal! Pretty low mileage for the year and price. There’s no timing belt so I think the only other bigger item to look out for is the power steering rack. I’ll link a buyers guide I wrote which details a bit more about what to look out for and changes between the model years, if you are interested! oppositelock.kinja.com/2004-2009-lexus-rx330-rx350-buyers-guide-1828762309
The 2007 is the first year of the timing chain so it does have the chain! I think the biggest difference in terms of feeling modern is the 2008 got a newer generation of navigation. Otherwise they are very similar.
@@neeb7450 it’s a bit tricky to say since it really depends on the age of the battery in the car. Personally, I wouldn’t want to play music more than 30-45 minutes with the engine off, but that’s not really based on specs or anything. I think short periods
But i have changed my tire sensors but not still working with computers and same with headlights whatever that means and do and i need to change out shocks / struts and aftermarket are very poorly made and stiff and more
JENNYk unfortunately I don’t think you can! Power folding mirrors didn’t come on the RX until 2013 in the US. The weird thing is non-US market cars do get power folding mirrors, but they didn’t include that over here for some reason.
Oh very nice! I don't have any personal experience with the 3rd gen RX other than sitting in them, but I think they're really good cars, too. If you look up brorowcarwiz, he had a 2010 RX350 in his family and he's got a video on it gives a pretty good overview of it.
They are very similar, but the RX350 is supposed to be a bit quieter since it has an acoustic windshield and a bit more sound insulation. This was added in the 2007 model year. Both are very quiet on the freeway though and excellent highway cruisers.
Cool, thanks. So if I want the quieter 350 version skip the 06 model and go with an 07-09. How do the acoustic windows work? I didn’t know about that feature
Antonio Barba I think that the RX300 would be mostly similar, the only difference being the engine. I believe the 3.0 V6s may have some oil sludge issues, so make sure you stay on top of your oil changes. Otherwise, there are probably little difference in feature packages. I know in the UK, some if not all get power folding mirrors and perforated leather seats. Air suspension is more common too. Otherwise, I think the cars are mostly the same!
Yes. VSC is standard on every year of the RX330 and RX350. AFS and auto wipers are available on both, but it depends on the option/packages you get. Our particular cars didn't get the optional AFS, but they both have auto wipers.
Michael Woyahn oh i am from Indonesia need to buy the second hand rx330 so sad to hear that the afs and auto wiper is based on optional and packages that we get
Oh okay, it may be different in Indonesia! They like to change standard features between countries so definitely double check when you're shopping. AFS and auto wipers are pretty common here even as options, too.
Michael Woyahn yes you are right in indonesia also we get Toyota Harrier that come from general import and Toyota is not sale but the Lexus RX is have 2 version the version that sale from Lexus Indonesia and from general import because that we get very many option and varian to choose and it make me so crazy and tired to search that have varian and features option that i need
Oh wow, that is a lot to keep track of. I'd guess the Lexus versions would be more likely to have those features, but, honestly, I'm not sure. I wish I could help more. Best of luck in finding the right one! It definitely does not sound like an easy task.
They're really fantastic overall cars. We've got over 400,000 miles combined on them. They're luxurious, reliable, pretty powerful, very practical with the hatches, and fantastic in the snow with AWD. The only thing is their gas mileage is just okay. Otherwise, I can't recommend them enough!
I can't personally vouch for this kit since I don't have any installed, but I've looked into them, and I think I would go for this GTA car kit one: www.gtacarkits.com/product/lexus-rx-2004-2009-iphone-aux-kit/ If you go on the Club Lexus forums, some people have experiences with bluetooth kits if you're looking for a first hand review!

Hope your RX treats you as well as our RXes have treated us!

awoo I’m sorry, but I’m not sure! Neither of our cars have navigation. I’d recommend checking out ClubLexus! They might have an answer.
awoo When we import Toyotas and Lexus to Australia we have to get map updates from a Lexus dealer. It costs over $200AUD and is a fantastic rip-off but Google maps on your phone has better detail and updates for free and a $10 suction-cup holder will fasten it to your windscreen in a better position for viewing while driving so you don’t have to look away from the road to see it.
Cool

This was a cool and very informative video but my favourite thing of all... the 350 has a timing chain! Praise The Powers That Be!

I've sat in quite a few 3rd gen RXs and actually got to drive a 2018 RX450h this summer and I can say there is a 99% chance I'll end up upgrading to one of those lol. I loved the hybrid actually. One thing puzzles me about this video, you said that the RX330 has a different AWD system than the RX350.
As far as I know, the AWD system changed to Viscous Coupler, aka Electromagnetic Coupler with the third gen of the RX, and the second gen had the same AWD system with both engine variants.

But the chain doesn’t require replacement
Just bought one with 160k on it and the car is amazing.

Cogitationes caecae I’m in Australia so all Lexus are right hand drive JDM here but I’m told that Toyota’s manufacturing standards were transplanted to their foreign plants in an extremely strict fashion so that build quality, longevity and reliability were the same.
According to Scotty Kilmer the Canadian ones are just as good as the ones made in Japan
@@michaelwoyahn2238 Hi Micheal, which year's RX330 did you do the 447,000 kms in?
@@vigneshwarmuthukumar727 it was a 2004!
Tell me where you get a timing belt replaced that cheaply, please. PS I own both of these cars, and when the '05 turns 20 I will probably replace it with a 2020-2022. No way I'm paying over $50K for a new one with a four banger and a noisy turbo.
How the hell does this car not have an aux input
Just use the tape back and get the aux cassette
i wonder if theres a huge difference between the 2003 toyota harrier and the rx 330, besides the fact that the harrier has a touch infotainment screen.
Great review of the Two RX 330 and 350. Do you have a video on how those two feel when driving?

Lexus does a refresh every few decades lol
I just bought an 2003 Toyota Sequoia Limited, and looking to buying a back vehicle. I’m either thinking the 2007-2011 RX350 or 2003-2009 4Runner (4th generation) hard decision.
Did you mention the 330 has a timing belt versus 350 has a chain? That's a big maintenance bonus for the 350.
were you listening?

@@michaelwoyahn2238 awesome, thanks for the response, appreciate it!
I've seen 330's go 10 years without having the timing belt changed.
Marc G it’s definitely possible depending on the mileage, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
The difference between the two 2004 RX 330 was made in Japan and the 2009 RX 350 was made in America, mechanic at the Lexus dealership.
@@dee-at6400 no. Some were Japanese, others were made in Canada.
If you are worried about MPG don't buy any SUV. The older RX don't get better than 20 on freeway
@@mungox1 that may be true about older RX but not all suv are the same. Some are hybrids.
@@mungox1 I get about 22 mpg with my AWD '05 RX if I keep it around 65 MPH.
We just bought a 2004 one with (115k miles) timing belt done at 62k.
Looks and drives good for 16 years old car. Any recommendations for me please! 😃

Nice video! I was considering a 2013 GX 460 but the fuel economy is not so good. I think i will buy a RX.
albertosamaniego thank you! I’d love a GX, but the fuel economy definitely leaves a lot to be desired.
I have driven my 2001 RX 350 through blizzards and ice as well as on a ton of loose and rocky off-road trails and even took it all the way from
San Francisco to the tip of Baja which included sand, trails, highway and a little bit of everything. It’s definitely not going to compete with the GX but with good tires it’s very capable but in off road conditions. I choose good Michelin All-terrains and have always been impressed. I wouldn’t go into deep mud with it but slippery or loose and it’s going to do great .
my 330 is brutally noisy at highway speeds ,most of the interior is coming out and acoustic insulation is going in this month
Huh, that's a bit surprising to me since mine is pretty quiet. Don't forget about tires too, my dad's RX350 has louder tires than mine and it makes a difference. If you're going for the quietest car, removing the roof racks definitely won't hurt, either.
Great video thanks for the time you put into it!

thanks, nice video. how's servicing costs been, similar to the same sized toyota? Cheers
Many thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video! How much mpg do you avg in each? And is premium fuel a must? Thanks
We use 87 octane in a208 RX350. Works fine.
Thanks Michael. I guess either way it's hard to go wrong. I'm looking at an 05 rx330. Any thoughts? Cheers
I recently bought an 04 Rx330 and had the timing belt changed right away. I can tell you that it’s way more than $600! The quotes I got ranged from 870 to 2100 at the Lexus dealer and everything in between. I couldn’t verify that it was ever changed and it has 180k miles, so…
Hey Michael, hope all is well with you and your family. What kind of wax do you use on your headlights?
Do you think removing the roof wrack reduces wind noise ? where do you get parts to fill the holes is would leave
It wouldn't hurt, but I can't say for sure. I don't think I've noticed any extra wind noise from the roof racks, but I've never driven one without them so honestly I'm not sure. Here's a thread detailing options you can use to fill the holes: www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-2nd-gen-2004-2009/454203-roof-rack-removal-procedure-2.html
It seems like you can buy weather strips for the whole roof or covers specifically for the holes.
Just purchased a 08 two days ago. J model nav fully loaded. I luv it. What does the power door button do it’s left to the dash.

Michael Woyahn Wow that’s amazing! Now I’m seriously considering picking one up.
@@michaelwoyahn2238 Thanks a lot. It makes a lot of sense now. it's possible, however, to get the navigation kit personally though.
David Obembe no problem! They do sell kits to replace the radio with a modern double din radio of your choice, so that could be a potential option, too.

Which one is more quiet on the highway?
