I had the privilege of working with a Japanese finish carpenter in Hawaii for 7 years. Their attention to detail is sometimes frustrating for a professional carpenter from the mainland but the knowledge I gained was incredible…
Love watching this craftsman, his pencil is sharper than any of my tools😅
😂
Mine too
Sharpening your pencil with a chisel is just boss level 😮
😊😊 thankyou
I always look forward to Shoyan’s videos. Having worked as a carpenter years ago, and now pursuing woodworking as a hobby, he brings so much integrity and craftsmanship to carpentry. Here in the US it is a mere manual job with little skill or status. Shoyan is a craftsman who puts honor and integrity into his work. We need this attitude in the US - not just from the craftsmen, but from public appreciation of skilled work well done. Bravo, keep these videos coming!
He would be very good at putting down a floating floor that’s for sure
It's a Japanese trait. Parents raise their children admonishing them to "do your best".
Most folks can't afford skill of this level --these aren't average houses he builds. You are correct, though, that *no* houses in the 'States are built to this standard. I was a carpenter, too, and Shoyan's framing work is nearly to the standard of cabinetmaking. Incredible craft.
Lol. If you have ever owned a Toyota you would understand the concept Japanese quality
@@Spencer-e2v Your knowledge of the subject is, apparently, non-existent. It isn't my job to educate you.
I doubt anyone noticed this (except for other carpenters), but before undercutting the round column, he prep’d a scrap board. He used his power planer to remove a tiny amount from the surface of the scrap board, the equivalent thickness of the kerf of the hand saw blade. Perhaps 1 or 2 mm? This ensured the tightest possible fit of the floor boards around the column. He filmed it, but didn’t include that in the narration. This is the work of a perfectionist.
The sign of true craftsmanship! This is why we love watching his work. 😁
I’m not a carpenter, just a homeowner doing his own house remodel including hardwood flooring and I knew immediately what he was doing as soon as I saw him planing that board
This is bordering on standard carpentry
I always see my man 5 steps ahead - and every cut seems brisk like anyone working at what they know, except it's all insanely high level tolerance. He's building a house with more finesse that any master furniture i've watched on yt 😂 ❤
Good eye. He also hammered the edge of the board down 🤔💭
“The work is not difficult, but the posture is tough”. I feel your pain.
Shoyun-
There is nothing wrong with being claustrophobic. If you feel yourself getting ill, take a moment. Stop everything you are doing, breathe, and remember that you are in a place of safety. Speak to your doctor about breathing exercises you can do when you feel that feeling start. It will help a lot. You are not less of a person for that, you are not faint hearted. You are just You. :)
The attention to detail is amazing.
Inspiration to be better but miles ahead of what I could ever do
Japanese craftsmanship is admired worldwide for good reason. There is no grey area, it is either precise or unacceptable. This excellent channel challenges me to improve everything about myself, thank you.
Excuseme,, you are the best of carpentry world
I am a finish carpenter sir in the States and I see you use a lot of Cypress? I made an 8’ door out of a Cypress Tree that once belonged to my customer ? It was a tree in his old house front yard that he cut down had milled and stacked / stickers then years later he hired me to make it! I made good money on it because his new rough jams were perfect hardly any shimming!
Thk you so much for your hard work to make these videos Sir!
@@Spencer-e2v I was requested to build this door for a couple who built a huge post beam barn and then the hired an architect , engineer & contractor to build a two bedroom , two bath house with an upper story inside the Post beam barn!
They decided that a custom door was needed on the N/W entry into the closest point between the Barn and house!
It was a very custom build however I only built that one door? The General Contractor had his own Finish Carpenters !
I do enjoy you videos because I learn from them so much about doing very good clean work! You and I ; I think are about the same age? I know you hv years of experience as I do but I think we are both about 25yrs old ? Right?
Kidding I am 65 and feel great probably retire like my dad at 80 God willing!
As a furniture builder, absolutely love your work. That's Cypress floor is so beautiful like artwork..... Great job! Awesome job!
You Sir Are A True Master At Your Craft, It Would Be An Honor To Own A House That You Built. The Attention To Detail And Pride In Your Work Is Second To None.
I love watching these, its so cathartic. Also, the Japanese tools seem so much better than English ones. From the pull saws to pull planes it just seems like a much better way to cut or smooth things than having to "push". I'm also in awe at the use of a circular saw; so much confidence. I've only used one a few times and not only do they scare me I ended up spending a lot of time attaching cutting guides (using scraps of wood) to get the cuts as perfect as possible, checking and double checking, and still made the mistake of not taking into account the width of the blade.
Well done Shoyan! It's not everyone that will do such an excellent job on something they don't like doing.
Gotta love working in socks 😂😂😂hats off to him and they stay clean 👍🏻
not many can pay this level of precision and time spent these days in home construction
I like the video best when talking in Japanese with subtitles. Awesome work!!
Yes. I wish they would just put English subtitles on their original Japanese videos rather than putting out separate English video with a translated voiceover. It would probably help their channel grow too because right now all their views are split between multiple channels.
I like watching both versions!
As always, I am completely mesmerized watching Your techniques. I can only wish that we might be worthy of some 'links' as to Your choices in tools. In this video, I find Your choices in the flush cut saws and even Your nail gun of genuine interest. Master Craftsman as You are, I suspect that You may have made Your hand planer Yourself, if not, a clue as to the manufacturer would be more than kindly appreciated. Genuinely in Awe and Honored that You have shared this video with us. 🙏 Namaste
This man is a Craftsman in every sense of the word.
You are a true craftsman.
Marvelous floor, greetings from Serbia 🎉
Beautiful work as always. The customer is very lucky to have you as a carpenter.
It is very satisfying to watch somebody do such careful and precise work. The homeowners will enjoy your expert workmanship for many years
Beautiful floor and great workmanship. I must say that watching you install the floor made my back hurt! Better to watch.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship, I wish all took such pride in their work these days😃
Brillian work as always, Shoyan!
😊😊
Such beautiful wood.
I love the fitting around the posts. Thinning the scrap piece by the thickness of the saw blade to get a perfect fit is first rate.
Thank you Shoyan-san.
I’ve never seen a more beautiful wood floor. Great job!!
Beautiful as usual Shoyan, thank you for the video.👍👍
it is really reassuring to see this level of quality in work, thank you. we have lost this sense of craftspersonship in the west
Shoyan, use a small RC Car with an old mobile phone attached. Call its camera using wifi, then you can do inspection without having to go under the house. If you are concerned about losing the car, you can attach a safety metal rope to pull it out if you need to.
Outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Great job master, years ago I used to do the same kind of work but here in Australia I get secked for such a great kind of quality, it takes too much time to complete... LOL
I like your skills.
I am from Nepal 🇳🇵🙏
I feel like a jigsaw would make that round cut much faster. Makita makes a nice one. Great work as always.
Very well done. Japanese carpentry is world-renown for its attention to detail and craftsmanship for good reason. Subscribed.
All of your videos blow my mind in some way or another. This one in particular blew my mind in how good that joint around the column was. Most especially that you cut the curved line with a pull saw and a chisel, which is a serious commitment to not using a jig saw :)
My favorite carpenter
I like seeing the quality of the wood in Japan, it gives me a good mood
That is a beautiful floor. Lovely to watch as always!
You are a true master.
I love to watch this man work. His attention to detail is superb.
I wish I could come to Japan to learn carpentry and construction techniques.
A VERY VERY good carpenter this man
👍🇬🇧
Your master craftsmanship is showing in the beauty of the floor. The access panel flooring seam matching the floor is outstanding. Thank you for sharing your abilities and talent with us.
Greetings from Germany, beautiful work
Wonderful floor installation.
Hi Shoyan San, it's a very beautiful floor, I'm a little surprised the access door isn't more diguised to match the floor , other than that it looks perfect.I hope you and your family are keeping well, arigato for the video, best wishe's to all there. Stuart Uk.
Wonderful, magnificent accomplishment! Beautiful!
Sorry to learn of your suffering from claustrophobia, it is real and difficult to deal with! Maybe tell the inspector: "You go ahead into crawl space, I'll wait here"
I truly adore his attention to detail.
wow very interesting experience friend
Beautiful. It was so satisfying watching the boards under the post get knocked perfectly into place.
Absolute Master!
Shoyan, you are an inspiration.
Beautiful floor, grate job real craftsmanship.
A master at work.
それは精度です!
Nice work, thank you.

I mean c’mon! Gentlemen is rocking white socks and manages to keep them clean.
The whole worksite is clean too!
That knotless Japanese cypress is so nice. I wish I could use some of it.
Amazing work when those two planks came together around that pillar 🙌
So satisfying to watch.
Always love seeing you notch around those pillars. So satisfying yet nerveracking to watch
Constantly blows my mind how exacting and beautiful your work is. That's why I watch this channel. Anata wa shin no ātisutodesu.
Beautifully done as always.
Skill level: Expert.
Your knees must be aching man.
I envy your lumber, took me like two years but I finally saw a cracked board in use lol
I enjoy watching a master craftsman at work. Amazing skills!
I love watching a really skilled carpenter. Perfect job!
24mm, plywood as underlayment for floors super steady
That's a work of art!
That is hard work with top skills. Hope you are getting well paid........you deserve it!
My knees hurt just from watching him work.
The amount off times have watched you build houses it still amazes me the amount off attention to detail you give each house you’re 100%. The floor looks beautiful even the access. 😀👍👍👍
Beautiful flooring installed by a true craftsman. I enjoyed watching the precision work you did around the column and access door. Stay safe.
Great job!
excellent work! The joints around the column were especially satisfying.
Top notch for sure.Even the scrawl space is neat and sterile.
Love your work.
I want a groove cutter!
Daiku san thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us
Thank you
Amazing work 👍
Very nice. The hand planing big pieces in a home build doesn't happen in the States. I always appreciate his attention to detail in all aspects of the build.
😊 hyy friend
Beautiful workmanship as always !!!
Absolutely beautiful and precise work, sir!
Great work and beautiful floor!
Splendid !
As always your work is both beautiful and inspiring. So much so that i'm building a bench like the one you made for your house. So sorry to hear you suffer from claustrophobia - Thanks & take care, Shoyan-san.
