7 Heroes Who Lived Long Enough to Become Villains: Commenter Edition

- Heroes have all the good karma but villains have all the fun, which is presumably why so many game heroes switch sides for the sequel. This is more widespread than we even imagined, judging by the quantity of comments on our last video on the issue. Direct your attention to these seven heroes who lived long enough to become the villain and subscribe to Outside Xbox for a video like this every Thursday.
Take Prince Arthas Menethil circa Warcraft 3, whose goal as a paladin was to stop a plague of undeath from infesting the kingdom - something at which he failed pretty spectacularly by using the cursed sword Frostmourne.
Said sword turned Prince Arthas into a Death Knight of the Scourge, and lead to him destroying Lordaeron, as well as much of the surrounding area.
Arthas then merged with the Lich King, killed his Dad King, and began a reign of terror that ended only when your heroic player character from World of Warcraft voyaged to his base in Northrend to defeat him.
There's a lesson in there about not wielding cursed runeblades nicked from Lich Kings, we reckon.

What's especially tragic about Arthas is that he only wanted to save his people and he was punished for trying to do that.

1. Jane certainly has quite good control of Frostmourne. I guess it submitted to Jane's much more powerful mind and evil powers huh?
2. Big Boss did not die by aerosol and a lighter. As he came back in MGS4 and died there at the grave of his mentor the Boss. Though Venom Snake did indeed die during Metal Gear 1.
Not to mention big boss wasnt a villain at all, his clone was. And venom snake I have doubts about the validity of the child soldiers and nukes thing considering phantom pain but perhaps that explanation will forever go untold now kojima is gone.

Try Knight Artorias, from Dark Souls. He was a dragon-slaying hero and a knight to Great Lord Gwyn. However, he got completely wrecked by Manus, and became consumed by The Abyss. He's the first boss of the DLC.

Red does NOT become a villain. If he does, then Pokemon is a crapsack world where everyone, from old men to little girls cosplaying as Pikachu, is a villain.

Red is not a villain, he is a champion. Obviously an antagonist to anyone who seeks the same title, but not a villain.
agreed, an antagonist would be like Giovani or any other evil team leader, not the champion of a region.
What I love is how the commenter suggests Red does nothing but sits on a mountain… Kanto is literally free of Team Rocket influence, and Johto’s problems got solved as soon as they came forward.
In fact, aside from Red/Blue, the region’s champion helps deal with the villainous team… usually defeated by a 10 (or 11) yr old.

Red and Gold are both heroes that happen to be participating against each other in a competition.
Red didn't become a villain. Yes you have to fight him to beat the game. However I don't see him plotting anything nefarious. Just waiting for someone who can defeat him.

I fully agree with you. Red never even antagonizes the player at all, throughout the entire game of gold/silver/crystal, and is only hinted at by Professor Oak after the 16th badge is earned. Sure, he catches all 151 Pokémon in Red/Blue, but gold/silver/crystal show that there are even more Pokémon, which could be reason enough to train and prepare for any sort of challenges that come your way... like say, being invited to a beautiful tropical island to battle the fiercest trainers from all around the world.
it's YOU who challenges Red, not the other way around. This is also why I feel the Gym leaders aren't antagonists either (except for Giovanni), merely obstacles for the player to overcome.
I think they mean like you have to fight them and the main protagonists to be a good guy.
Also, who knows what he did to the trainers before you?
In the Pokemon Special comic he's there to heal an injury he sustained in a previous arc. Not canon obviously, but it's more of an explanation than the no explanation you get in the game itself.

RED IS NOT A VILLAIN
If he wanted to stand around waiting to hand folks their rear ends he could've done that as Champion far more easily. Instead he retires from the League, having fulfilled his personal goals, and chills out on a mountain enjoying the scenery.
And then some young punk charges up the mountain demanding a fight just to validate *his own* ego. *You* have to initiate the battle; Red doesn't even approach if you stand in front of him, even though you're blocking his view and being rude.

OMG, the heroes of Diablo 1 is not unnamed you guys. The warrior is Prince Aidan who became the Wanderer, the Wizard became the summoner and the Rogue became Blood Raven.

Early Bioware games Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic & Jade Empire lets the player take their character to hero or villain. As much as I love Mass Effect & Dragon Age, the end goal is always the same

When I first fought Red, my Pokemon were underleveled but I had a bunch of potions and full restores so I just kept healing my Pokemon when I didn't have any PP left and waited for Red's Pokemon to struggle themselves to death. I wasn't proud, but it got the job done.
Liu Kang actually live to see him as a villain, he was taken to the future, where he fight his evil self.

What about Corvo or Emily in Dishonored 2? They definitely become villains if you get the high chaos ending where you forget to unfreeze your other family member and rule Dunwall with an iron fist.
They arent the villain of the game though. Also corvo could have been the villain in the first one. Everyone knows the canon endings are the good endings

I'm still shocked you didn't include Reaper from overwatch, he turned on everyone without warning!
It doesn't fit with this episode since Overwatch is the first game in the series so he was never the good guy in the series itself just in the lore.
Also Overwatch *currently* isn't "story-focused" or has one that can be played, so it doesn't count even more... yet. (They should do it, those shorts are pretty great)
fun fan theory for anyone who's curious: A lot of fans think that Cortana is actually infected by the flood (logic plague is what it's called when an AI gets infected by the flood). Long story short, a lot of her beliefs are actually the same as the flood, and fans think she took up the Mantle because that way she could fulfill Gravemind's plans... not that anyone asked, but it is a great theory and I hold out hope that's what's going to be happen.

Yes, he was just another greedy bad guy all along who died before the game even begins. And to be fair, even if your playable character was actually alex he would be far from a hero. Prototype had this could Evil vs Evil theme
There is no Prototype 2 ... It never existed. Just like there is no live action Dragon Ball Z movie or live action Avatar the last Air Bender movie. They were all just bad dreams.
... You forgot to mention that we don't kill Arthas the Lich King in WoW. He kills us, then Tyrion arrives and finished Arthas, wins, and then resurrects us, the players.

Now, Ryu isn't a *hero* so to speak, but defeating an overpowered Megalomaniac super-villain Psycho (power) M.Bison is what a hero does, innit?
Until, he becomes *Evil Ryu* who isn't a world dominating type, however his power is called *"Satsui no Hado"* or "Surge of Murderous intent" and considering the other master of it is called *Akuma* "Demon", he isn't much of a dictator either but he kills his opponents, whilst they suffer 1000 deaths, and have their soul wiped out.
It's in their name gor god's sake!
