- Realism in games is all well and good, right up until someone dies of dysentery. That was the thesis of one of our recent videos, and a lot of you concurred, so here are your suggestions for the times you could have used a little less reality. I remember in physics class, the teacher put up Oregon Trail on the projecter and did the controls while the students directed him in the game and he called all the players by the students names. Students were dying of dysentery and everything. It was glorious.

Realism should never include blinking, the characters blinks when you do, just leave it at that.
If the character only blinks when you do, how would you know it was blinking?
@@ntrong32 how often are you aware you're blinking? I mean now that it's been mentioned is one thing but I've never noticed it before and you don't *need* to know they're blinking. It's not important.
The only time I think blinking makes sense in that one SCP game where you have to carefully time your blinking because one of the SCP following can kill you pretty much instantly the moment you blink.
@@lacytaylor1501 There's also that Fridge in Control that's the same idea. Forget if "not blinking" was part of it, but all I remember is that someone had to keep watching it. (But yeah, Control is pretty much an alternate universe SCP Foundation and the Fridge is something like Peanut.)

As a freshman in college, if a game reminds me of the horrors of lifelong debt and dealing with financial aid, I'm turning it off and crying in a corner.

I JUST realized that the story of Samuel is the same as Death's story. In learning to kick flip, Death is also learning to control his body with deliberate consideration just like Samuel and us as the player.
fun fact about Kingdom Hearts 2; you don't actually need to save anything up, do one job, then go to the station, regardless of how much munny you actually have and you can advance.

I remember the first time I played Manuel Samuel I actually played the game too fast and the game got mad at me and yelled at me for speed running for the entire credits and I felt so bad except for the fact I wasn't trying to speed run and I felt like the cat from those "woman yells at cat" memes

Actually Energizer removed their brand from Alan Wake and we all learned that no-branded batteries last just as long....🔋

I've never heard of Manual Samuel, but now I have to manually look for it, manually pay for it and manually enjoy it
It's a good laugh, and it's also got a friendship/relationship threatening multiplayer mode! So many arguments...
Then you should manually watch the oxbox crew manually play it. It’s a hilarious video (especially the way Andy decided to manually walk Samual through the game), and I manually laughed until I manually cried. Two (manual) thumbs up!
I've watched a full play through and it's hilarious. It looks really fun to play if you enjoy that king of challenge. I understand why it's on this list, but it doesn't really fit in this category. The whole point of the game is the manual control of normal functions. It's not like it's a small quirk of some other type of game that brings the whole experience down.
It's like playing octodad, you'll laugh all the way through, best experienced in multiplayer mode.

On one hand, Kingdom Hearts 2 gives you a good sense of Roxas's mundane life before the plot started. On the other hand, Roxas's mundane life was pretty dull.
At least Roxas doesn't die of dysentery.

The poor guy only got to have a mundane life for about a week, I'm sure he would have loved to keep things dull a bit longer! ;)
I enjoyed getting to know Roxas' world and friends. Also loved the intro theme for that game!

Don't the batteries last forever, just need to cool off, But you can quick swap mid combat?
@@bdp4 Yeah, they recharge if I recall, you just had to avoid tapping them out all the way. Changing them was an emergency solution if you needed to focus the flashlight a lot to fight off enemies, but the whole game is a state of emergency, so you do it a lot.

I love that there's a spoiler warning for Desert Bus, the most uneventful game in gaming history. Does it spoil the bug on the windshield?
In the original The Oregon Trail, the speed increase granted by oxen was linear and didn't cap, so if you put all your starting money into nothing but oxen and a little bit of food, you'd get to Oregon in a matter of minutes.
What about Animal Crossing? It suckers you in with its cutesy residents and charming village life, then slams you with the realities of being trapped in an ever-growing mortgage. You better get to bug catching, otherwise Tom Nook will come back for your thumbs.
@@Sableagle YOU tell him that. He'll show up with a mother-skin cap telling you that you owe extra money.
Tom Nook gives you a no-interest loan with no actual ramifications for never paying it, and the only increase is when you request to have more renovations done. You never have to pay him anything if you don’t want to - even if you want to upgrade from a (free!) tent to an actual house, it only costs 10k bells, which is the equivalent of about 20 pieces of fruit or like 10 decent ocean fish. Getting your hair done costs a third of that.
Tl;dr if it were really realistic he’d charge you interest and there would be consequences for not paying him back

Having to pay off a loan at all is an odd bit of realism that's not normally seen in games but I agree that Tom Nook is incredibly generous about it.

If I've learned anything from this list it's that games love messing with your characters vision to signify pain or sickness but action/horror seem to have a monopoly on this, is there no way to visually express the boredom felt by the desert bus driver? Or give me an immersive indicator of just how badly my Sims need the bathroom??
Because dancing in place and grabbing their crotches until they leave a puddle on the floor isn't clear enough?

Good luck saving the world, kid, but remember to do your homework so your teachers don't hit you in the face with chalk, get a part-time job, spend time with ALL your friends, learn to cook, read every book, play every video game, do your laundry, remember to bathe on the right days, make tools, go to the gym, and MAYBE make time to date....oh and also, that plant in your room might die if you don't take care of it. On TOP of being on probation and every dungeon having a really specific deadline where if you don't make them, terrible things happen to your friends.

I commented Persona on their last video touching on this subject. I was ignored lol Persona 3 not only do you have homework, tests, grades, part-time jobs, dungeon deadlines and extracurricular activities but if you don't make sure you go to the bathroom you become ill and have to go to the nurse which can mess up your deadlines and take up what little free time you have.
At least Joker’s getting a break from that. He gets to beat the living daylights out of Incineroar and Yoshi instead.
Or when youre getting black mailed by the police force, getting death threats left and right, are wanted by the entire investigation bureau and you get shot by one of your allies who forced their way into your group by coercing you?

Nothing to do with this comment but, MGSV where your suppressors broke every three seconds, AND the game doesn't tell you how to make more. Plus you start with an AR and a tranquilizer gun that doesn't kill people, so when you get seen, you have no way to silently kill people.

Dysentery is an inflammatory condition of the intestines caused by bacteria, viruses, parasitic worms, or protozoa. Symptoms include diarrhea with blood, fever, abdominal pain, and rectal tenesmus. (That last one is when you think you have to poop, but you can't.)
Take our word for it, dying from dysentery is kinda disgusting.

I’ve played every Far Cry except the original and 2. I started with Far Cry Instincts, then played 3, and so on. Oh and New Dawn, I haven’t played that one.
But I really want to give 2 a try. I love immersion and realism. I heard the plant life more realistically responds to your actions. I like details like that.
You should check out Desert Bus for Hope. A charity stream were a comedy troop called Loading Ready Run play Desert Bus for 24/7. They do it ever November and then post videos from the stream. Lots of fun and for a good cause.

A couple years ago I played Oregon Trail for the first time in decades. I was thirty real world seconds from getting the last two members of the party to the goal when both of them proceeded to fall ill and die.

I have 2 others: The battery mechanic in the Outlast games, and blinking in SCP: Containment Breach. You need batteries in Outlast to have access to your camera's night vision system, especially important considering how dark it is. As for SCP, blinking is automatic, although you can manually blink, which is unnerving since one of the first SCPs you encounter takes advantage of when you blink or not looking at it and kills you instantly if you do so.

It's a kind of new example, but how about Hunt: Showdown?
- Multiple weapons spit out perfectly usable bullets if you reload them at the wrong time.
- Gunshot wounds are severely damaging and there's no auto healing.
- Everything makes noise, especially gunshots and explosions, which can be heard from miles away.
- Burn injuries can't be instantly fixed up with bandages or medical syringes.
And more.
As a proud member of the Oregon Trail generation, dying of Dysentery was a badge of honor, thank you very much.

also, i very sure that that desert bus is anti realism as there isn't a 2000mile road to las vegas that has nothing on it, let alone having a BUS that can take an 8 hour trip on 1 tank of gas. fail penn and teller, you literally had 1 job.
Actually, it's not even close to 2000 miles - more like 400. The bus goes rather slow... and yes, it's no problem for a big truck or bus to go 8 hours without fuelling. I can go well over 1000 miles in my truck without fuel - I have over 200 gallons of capacity.
Also, have you ever driven anywhere in that area? There are stretches that seem that open and desolate. I love driving around the desert southwest... that said, I like getting away from people, too, and appreciate that desolation. :)
I actually have 2 friends who got dysentery. In the UK.
They were hiking in the borders.
They decided to drink from the Tweed.
Less than a day later they admitted themselves to BGH, to be diagnosed with dysentry.

@@jackyiv no, I'm trying to do a good person playthrough legit, but I keep getting stuck on the part where you need to take the regents, and stay active for two hours straight
Worst and best stage ever. It's right before the open world and meaningful choice part but also before you realize everyone starts demanding you give them money and you have to do repetitive tasks just to do what you want to do.

Imagine that it rains every single day when you drive to and from work on a car that does not have automatic windshield wipers. You have to pull the lever every time the windshield gets covered in rain while at the same time focusing on steering, braking, turning, changing lanes, and watching for hazards. This is what the game Alone in the Dark feels like.
Desert Bus did give us Desert Bus For Hope, though, AKA the best marathon charity livestream

I'll probably cure cancer or write the greatest piece of literature ever before I ever work out what exactly the appeal of the Kingdom Hearts games are.
Primarily the battle system at this point. If you follow the story, it can be enjoyable too, but it's gotten the Square Enix trademark of overcomplication.
