There is, however, a lot of shame in getting one of these embarrassing game overs, where we managed to lose the game through stupidity, ineptitude or on one memorable occasion, pissing off a powerful vampire. Not that I've ever done it, because that would be pretty dumb,
but how embarrassing would it be to die because you wanted to check if the game had fall damage?
how else would you know, right?
It's safe to assume that if a games target audience is above the age of eight then yes, your character will take fall damage.

Obilivion: Died while trying to level up my jump skill, because breaking your legs to the point where you just nearly die is the quickest way to do so. So many times.

Jumping into the acid pit at the courthouse in Batman: Arkham City. I don't know what I was expecting to happen. But now Batman is dead and it's all my fault.

Isn't there a section in another Tomb Raider game where Lara dies by getting turned into gold because you climbed onto the hand of Midas? Pretty sure the golden rule when it comes to Midas is don't touch the hand.

Prey. You can jump into the helicopter blades at the very beginning of the game, and get an achievement from it.

I remember watching the video that showed this, forgetting about it, playing Prey, do it by accident trying to see if I can break the game, remembering about it, and then laughing at myself in shame
I wish Fahrenheit was on the list. There was a game over where you can take painkillers then drink alchohol which would result in the character dying.

depends on how many painkillers you take. I took middle strong one and drank some Vodka. Had a lot of fun that night. And I slept so hard that people put chewing gum in my nose and a Chickenwing in my mouth and I did not wake up. Good times.

My favorite is still romancing Morinth in Mass Effect 2. By the time you have the chance, you already know she's an Ardat-Yakshi, a deadly psychic vampire who kills her mates. What did you think would happen?!
Morrowind. A guy drops out of the sky and dies. He has scrolls and a journal about wanting to fly. What can go wrong?
Either "SPLAT!" or ending up in international waters. Somewhere, Azura is face-palming.
Fighting mud crabs with a bow and playing it like early final fantasy games where bows didn't need arrows to work and you just pissed off the entire starting town so nobody's gonna sell you anything.
The point is, you have three such scrolls. If you fire up one, take a leap, and before you crash onto the ground you fire up another one *with less than seven seconds until impact* on the clock, you are going to land safely.
@Robidu1973 Yes! Those scrolls teach you how to think in Morrowind logic. If you just use them without thinking, you die. Figure out the timing or combine with a featherfall spell and they're epic. I usually hung onto them for use during the famous "travel across the map under a vow of silence" pilgrimage quest. If I wanted to mix things up from using the speed levitation blessing you could get from a nearby shrine for that instead. Get clever and the game rewards you. See also: Boots of Blinding Speed + a resist magic spell when equipping them.
Anyway, you just reminded me how much I love that game!
Yeah The Phantom Pain one was incredibly embarrassing, but not nearly as much as when you take the Fake Death pill in Snake Eater, then forget to take the revival and then die for reals.
I completely forgot about the revival pill, which is why it took longer than it should've to get past the section with the Sorrow
When I first played MGS3, I didn't know about the Revival pill and never used the fake death pill. When I got to the Sorrow, it took me weeks to get through him.
Ayan Haider I actually used the Fake Death Pill to forcibly redo an area or reload my save when I was doing my No Alert run.
Easily my most valuable item next to the tranq.

biohazard724 Well I disagree because the game isn’t over, it just revives your character to carry on as if nothing happened. Borderlands, like every other game that uses an autosave or checkpoint system, doesn’t have a game over screen

What about in new Vegas in the Sierra madres vault, you are very clearly and specifically told never to open this one particular message on the terminal, if you open it the vault seals forever with you inside it.
Oh shit I forgot about that...or maybe I didn't know. I'm huge into New Vegas so I feel like I'd know this
I did that, and I ended up permanently breaking the DLC in that playthrough by using the TCL console command to escape. I don't have a save from before that, but I'll keep that in mind for future playthroughs.
No mention of mixing alcohol and pills in Indigo Prophesy? I literally facepalmed when I did it.

Quite the opposite experience if you were a kid in the 80s. But if you were, you're old now which is, unfortunately, worse than having had a tough time with video games at some point :( It's a lose-lose scenario!
It’s not exactly a game over, but in Fallout New Vegas you can ‘bother’ Caesar too much.
After asking something 3 times when he has a headache he sicks his entire entourage on you; unless you’re super heavily armed, armored, and have a boatload of chems, you’re dead.
Added bonus: your companions are waiting outside & it’s a hard skill check to get meds in, so you’re alone & have no healing.

Darkest Knight yeah, so unless you head there with Boone and Rex with intent to kill you’re probably going to get spanked harder than Africa with The Rains.
Justin Helms Companions aren't even allowed in the tent if you annoy him. So your best option is to run unless you just get hammered and stunned early. Then You're fucked

I actually found a little cheat that SOMEHOW worked when I took cover inside a wagon and just shot at them, all in relative safety, except one of them was right next to the wagon and scored a couple of hits while I was in the wagon, but I managed to kill the entire group from the safety of the wagon before jumping out and killing the one right next to it cuz I couldnt hit him from INSIDE the wagon...I also think we hit each other with Power Gauntlets at the same time and I BARELY survived with like barely 5 hp at the end while HIS corpse went flying in several pieces. XD it was so epic and yet so hilarious at the same time.
I remember my first time playing Disgaea when I lost to the boss at the very beginning of the game. Needless to say it made me feel stupid when all of a sudden the boss himself was surprised he won and gloated while the credits rolled.
Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission
If you do all the wrong choices and don't do any of the extra missions you'll kill everyone including yourself on the suicide mission and Joker is the only one who'll survive.
Not exactly a Game Over, but a Game Over for your character.

omg i remember the first time i played me2 and i did all the extra missions and made all the right choices just by default bc it felt right. Everyone lived and I didnt even know that they could die until i read about it. i couldnt imagine why anyone would do something different from what i did lmao

I swear I thought when they were going with a Laura Croft game and talking about Tomb Raider Legacy (with the T-Rex), I swore they were going to cover the "Midas Touch" game over. There is a statue of Midas. You touch him. Your skin hardens into Gold and you Die. Game Over. I really felt stupid.
Watch again. She punched at the base of the skull. Not an efficient form of neck-snap but I guess it works for the game.

@@bern9642 you'd be surprised, someone of her talents can (in fact it's actually easy to do it if you're at peak physical condition...just like Lara). Don't believe me? Check the following: medical journals on how much of a hit the human spine can take and the world record for how hard a human can punch. Turns out the latter is a much, much higher number than the first. In fact boxers have to wear the gloves specifically BECAUSE of that particular detail.
@@lilfrostyy8829 There are only seven cervical vertebrae and a damaged vertebrae is not enough to kill someone. There needs severe trauma or separation of the spinal cord. The if the spine is severed between the first, through seventh vertebrae, death is unavoidable due to all brain controlled functions being cut. But people can still survive as quadra/paraplegics for spinal separations below that line or partial separations above. Like Christopher Reeves.

my cousin got possibly the dumbest game over in The Last Guardian. got caught by the armor suits, saw the mysterious door he had been trying to open for fifteen minutes opened when the armor suits came close, and let himself be carried through because he thought it was an easter egg. never facepalmed so hard.

My favorite game over is simply refusing the call to adventure in Super Paper Mario. It happens before you even begin to play and the responses you can choose are just so childish XD.
Or, and my personal favorite, being Bowser and refusing oxygen... several times over!

The 'hidden' fourth ending to Mass Effect 3 is one of my favourites. After three epic games spent fighting the Reapers and their indoctrinated minions, Shepard is given a choice - how to end the Reaper cycle, once and for all.

Hey, his gun worked on every other dangerous alien he'd encountered. Okay, sometimes he had access to much bigger guns, but you do what you can with what you get, you know?
You haven't finished the sentence. "I'll use my gun on this projection of a kid which has no physical body."
If the indoctrination theory is correct, the ending where you shoot the holographic kid is actually the closest thing the game has to a GOOd ending.
That was the first ending I got and therefor the true canonical ending. I don't think I even meant to, it was just "can I use my gun here?" pulls trigger. Instant cutscene of everyone dying. Oops?
It's more of an "I die free" sort of ending.

There are so many possible deaths in the old Sierra games it's impossible to pick any of them for this list. Get locked in a room with a descending ceiling without the one item that can rescue you (which, btw, was thirty screens and eight puzzles ago)? Too bad, that's 90s videogame design for ya!
... Well, actually, there IS one I can think of. In the escape pod in Space Quest 1, there is a middle button on the console that the game tells you is clearly labeled "DO NOT PUSH". Nonetheless, you CAN push the button ... only for the pod to crashland in a different Sierra game and kill you upon impact.
My favourite Sierra death was at the very beginning of Rise of the Dragon, whereby if you leave your apartment without having put your clothes on first, you get arrested for public indecency.
Reminds me of mis-clicking while climbing the Cliffs of Logic in KQ6. I'm sensing a theme.

And to be fair, if you went to the winged ones in KQ6 and already had all the items you needed, the game would let you know by having Alexander say "I am ready." when the king warns him about the dangers in the catacombs.

What about ending K in Nier: Automata where you die from eating a Mackerel. The game tells you the fish is lethal to androids but you still eat it anyways then watch as the credits roll.

As I hear it, basically all of Nier Automata has potential for this. I was going to suggest the time I walked in the wrong direction during the second playthrough's intro and apparently 9S just wandered off, never to be heard from again.
Haven't played it, but I'm pretty sure the item description says "lethal for androids" or something.

I'm honestly surprised Nier: Automata wasnt one. Some random person tells you to eat a fish just to see what would happen, and you do it. I was never embarrassed to get a game over before that moment
This reminds me of the time my friends and I were playing D&D and we were offered alcohol from a dwarf in an elegant green robe.

My favorite way to die is by taking "friendly" player's advice. Jumping off of a cliff in dark souls because "why would the chalk on the floor steer me wrong", last time I listen to graffiti.
On Xtra I've seen someone trick Luke into reading just in range of a gatling gun. They can get surprisingly creative with those traps
When I heard “Embarrassing Game Overs”, I thought there’d definitely be a Dark Souls entry.
I’m specifically thinking of the original one, when you land on Firelink Shrine. The first NPC you meet is the Crestfallen Warrior, who tells you where to go and what to do.
Unless you attack him.
Then he goes batsh*t and starts attacking you. At that level, you probably haven’t got a chance, so you’ll probably die, to which he says “How embarrassing. You actually let me do that to you?” in the most smug voice imaginable.
When you respawn...
He’s right there, still batsh*t. And he’ll continue to be until you either kill him or run away. And if you kill him, he doesn’t respawn.
Ever.
I personally made this more humiliating, because I had bait him to the edge of a cliff, then fall off. At least he followed me.
Now I’ve got 20+ deaths, no idea where to go, and humiliated for the rest of my life.

You know, of all the wrong turns people have made at the start of Dark Souls, that might be the most wrong one I've ever heard. But that certainly makes it a unique experience! I hope you still managed to figure out what to do next. It's a fun game once you find a way to go forward!
Also @office chair, exactly how many first time players of Fromsoft-style games are going to be able to parry him consistently enough to whittle him down in their first 5 minutes of Lordran? My guess is, like, maybe 5 or 6 prodigies, but otherwise that's not really viable.

@@theleanbusinessman5431 Yes, he does... but I took the time to beat the Asylum Demon with my bare fists using a Thief on tmy first playthrough and I reallyyyy didn't want to lose my progress there. So... yeah, that was a mess and a half.

Those damn rats going through the wall of light the same time you go through carrying Sokolov has given me a Game Over so many times. (The fact that you re-wired the wall doesn't seem to matter if a damn rat goes through the same time you do. )
You can do the same thing in the original Dishonored. "I'll just climb down this convenient chain...oh, you...can't hold onto chains when holding an unconscious body? Sorry Soko-" *Game Over*

The dumbest move to cause a Game Over in Dishonored is at the very first area, Dunwall Tower (prior to meeting with the queen and witnessing her assassination). As you scout around the area and notice High Overseer Campbell having his portrait painted, you will trigger a Game Over with the phrase, "You committed a capital offense," if you walk from Campbell to (and over) the area immediately to the painter's right side (possibly where he keeps his canvases). Upon doing this action, a piano sound will occur, Campbell will start to talk, blood drops will appear near the lower right side of the screen, and the Game Over Message will appear.
What about in Fallout 4 when instead of going into Vault 111 you decide you're all macho and such a survival expert that you can survive a nuke and radioactive fallout and run away from the vault.

Except it only gives you a Time Paradox screen.
What about when you save in the middle of The End boss fight and DON'T wait the full week and he instant kills you? Or when you think The Sorrow ACTUALLY killed you and pressed CONTINUE

There's a few of these in Super Paper Mario. You can refuse to save the world in the introduction, you can fall for Mimi pretending to be Merlee, or you can refuse to wear a space helmet in space. The first and third of these require quite a bit of persistence, though you're rewarded with some hilarious dialogue so it's not too bad.
Really thought that choosing to sleep with Morinth after all the warnings about Ardat Yakshi bonding being fatal to the mate would be on this list XD
You guy's didn't cover the full story for "The Stanley Parable"!
If you attempt to use "sv_cheats 1" a second time after you are sent to the serious room, you get sent there again. As a "reward", you get another stern lecture, an even *longer* sentence, and the Narrator even goes so far as to remove the table from the Serious Room.
(I think you may be able to do a third time, but I can't recall if it's possible or what the consequences are...)

I don't think that's the most embarrassing game over in the Stanley parable. The most embarrassing one is where you jump off that platform and fall to your death. The "best" part about that whole ending is that the Narrator is pleading for Stanley to listen to reason, and the fall isn't even enough to kill Stanley; he has to jump off the ledge three separate times!
Dat-Mudkip the fall I was talking about was from the moving platform. Theres no railing to prevent you from jumping off the first time you get on it so most people think huh i wonder if I can jump off this, they then walk off the edge half expecting there to be an invisible wall to stop you. The one you talking about if funny to, it's just that this one is one that you could completely miss, the only ones that get this game over are the ones that get this game over are the player that look at a two story drop of instant death and wonder "will I die if I jump off" and then jump

@@lordnul1708 that's really not how video games are made. Certainly not ones that big. He will have a broad creative vision, but so much of that work belongs to the artists, designers and programmers that actually created it.

James Fuller how have I never thought to try that. I removed the OS chip the moment I saw it, i screwed around with the options to mess with 9s, I even ate the the fish the second I got it, but I never once thought to use the self-destruct to blow up the station. I have to go and try this now.

In the Fallout New Vegas dlc Dead Money, when you reach the vault at the end, you are warned not to read a certain entry on the terminal, or else the vault will lock you in forever. But you can choose to read it anyway like an idiot, and get locked in there forever.

Vampire the bloodlines the masquerade. Forgetting to not be a vampire in public, breaking the masquerade, getting vampire hunters all over your ass, and then losing all masquerade masks. All because you forget people aren't used to supernatural beings showing up on a street corner.

What's worse is how easy it is to lose approval by being stupid. Literally just jump around the place, I've never seen approval drop so fast. Also when you first greet Celene when you enter the ballroom, if you pick the bottom option both times (ya know, the ones where you try to warn her that she's gonna get killed), you're instantly escorted out.
Bloody Orlesians. I can understand the jumping around you're at a fancy party but "the game" requires way too much subtlety for any of my Inquisitors to put up with.
Though if I'm honest I do like the fact that you can actually get kicked out of the party for just messing around.
I know this video was before its release but skipping the hope into the sun in the outer worlds because your character is actually dumb is the most literal application to the video title I can think of
You forgot about romancing Morinth in Mass Effect 2. It gets said multiple times that she kills people whenever she melds minds with them. Yet you still have the choice of trying to romance her and if you do it'll kill you and show a death screen.
In Sewer Shark for the Sega CD, about 60 percent through the gruelling game, you finally get an upgrade to your ship. In a cut scene, your superior tells you to test out the new guns and fire it at the garage door. If you fail to fire any shots, he cusses you out and says he’ll find a pilot who can listen to orders. Roll credits, game over, no continue screen, start from the beginning.
I'm surprised Resident Evil 4 didn't make it onto this list. Shooting the lake before fighting 'Del Lago' will provoke the monster to breach the water & eat Leon, killing him immediately. Talk about an embarrassing Game Over, there's even an achievement in the HD re-release of the game telling you not to do it!
There's also the game over you get if you shoot Luis too many times where he turns on you saying "Adios, Leon!" and kills you.

I'm just gonna say, my fav example of dying for being dumb. Is in Sonic when you just stand there for a while... and he literally says "Fuck this, I'm out" and jumps off the level. Always will be funny and just plain a whole mood
