    What a cumbersome way to laminate.

    I was amazed how much more rigidity you got with the side lamination. I appreciate your explanation of the vacuum bag issues and how you resolved them. Nice to know the troubles one can run into on a guitar build. Looking forward to seeing this acoustic guitar taking shape.

    Good, informative video - thanks for sharing! One tip, though; switch from wax paper to parchment paper and you'll have much better results.

    I'm glad they turned out well. I feel your pain in the vacuum bag. The number of times I've had it all go wrong just as the bag pulled tight. 🤦‍♂️ Lol

    Yes, vacuum bags can be intense, I have not done sides but planning to do it soon, always a learning curve, also its easy to underestimate how powerful the vacuum is, also I did a furniture mold I thought was strong enough for vacuum, it got crushed like the titanic submersible, incredible pressures...

    That was an amazing first attempt at the vacuum bag gig. I immediately thought tape would be the answer on the first side set up. Just to get everything aligned before putting it in the bag. Of course it does get stuck to the epoxy.

      I was contemplating taping and/or spring clamps. I think the spring clamps would have punctured the bag... I am going to invest in a foot control for the vacuum. I think that will let me get the bag 95% empty, then I can do my fine adjustments and let off. If not, just disengaging the hose worked pretty well. I was surprised.

    Did you ever create videos the logical next steps in this build? I love your videos and would like to see your methodology for the completion of the project. Also, just to let you know, I just found your youtube channel and as a result, your website. I'm excited about the rental program for the side bender!!!!

      Mike - The guitar is in the same state it was in at the end of this video. Shortly after I shot this I had to shift my focus to product development... I'm almost out of the weeds and I've been a few sets of sides with our new bender. I will pick this one back up along with a couple others shortly. I'll actually have some video of our new side bender in action shortly... As for the rental program... I'm waiting on one supplier to deliver, then we'll be ready to go. I'm hoping that happens in the next 2-3 weeks!

    It's a good system for applying even pressure, but I think same results could be achieved in a more simple way. I would use the vacuum and side jig to make a 25mm laminated caul. I would make this over a bendy hardboard layer spacer (side thickness + thickness lightly compressed foam material) then fix the foam material to inside of the caul. The bent sides could glued placed on the side jig the caul placed on top and clamped to the side jig with even pressure. Bespoke clamps could be made from drilled steel bars and nuts and threaded rod.

      I did that and although it works fine for most apllications, if your going to use a quicksetting glue like titebond its almost impossible tk get it properly clamped in time.

  • @Andluth

    Skip wax paper. get thin Teflon (HDPE) sheet and attach it to the form. NOT the stuff for heat transfer forms as it is porous. Solid thin white stuff.

    Coming frkm norm wood glue j quickly learned you need a ton less epoxy then you think, it doesnt dry out when hardening like wood glues so the jormal film used with wood glue will just result jn a ton of squezeout or epoxy pocket between laminations.

    Nice job Greg. Wondering why you chose to go with laminate sides instead of solid wood?

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couple reasons... Overall its a stiffer system. I want the sides as rigid as possible. Also, a solid piece won't bend without snapping. This also eliminates the kerfing that is typically used. That should free up a bit more of the top. I will also be able to eliminate the vertical stiffeners that are typically seen around the inside of the body. Lastly, the mass will help bring the top frequency down a bit. That will be important in future builds, but this will give me a baseline.

    I have a somewhat related question. I just acquired a 1864 decker brothers grand piano that I don’t plan on restoring. Really I got it for the legs. It’s solid Brazilian rosewood 1 inch threw out. I gather there’s a market for it for guitars and think it’s beautiful but building furniture out of it is kind of not the way to best use it. Any recommendations for where or who to talk to about selling some to makers?

    • @SkyscraperGuitars
      @SkyscraperGuitars  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd be happy to talk about it with you. I have the means to process pieces like that into buildable guitar sets. I can't post my email address here, but if you go to our website and use the "Contact" form, we can connect via email. It would be better to exchange phone numbers or arrange a zoom call that way. skyscraperguitars.com/contact/
