They are improvising which is another way of saying "spontaneous composition".. so instant composing playing the things they are hearing in their mind in the moment.. and honestly maybe some stuff they aren't hearing considering the blistering speed.

Then they discovered that Russia had sent their cream of music professors who prepared and trained Cuban musicians in all aspects of the musical spectrum. Hi #jim Hendrix, during the cold war, a lot of russian music masters were sent to Cuba, not only to teach but also to establish the bases of the musical education program in the island, during that time a lot of kids were trained with the best of the classical russian school, that´s one of the reason why there´s many cuban musicians in jazz (Rubalcaba, Chucho Valdez, Horacio Hernandez... )that have flawless technique...

In 1991 I had the privilege of seeing a young Gonzalo as well, at Seattle's New Orleans Cafe. I still remember every detail of his amazing artistry. Long live Gonzalo Rubalcaba!
