Thank you for sharing; great informational video for a beginner, like me, whom is researching OBD II scanner tools. I listened on another video that some scanners aren't good for vehicles with aftermarket parts unless you remove the aftermarket parts. I am lucky that I do not have any aftermarket parts on my truck [2005 GMC Sierra 1500 VHO 6.0L] unless a K&N filter counts in that category. I hope the K&N filter lives up to the beneficial claims that other experienced after installing a K&N filter. I have received mixed signals about OBD II scanners because some mechanics told me that GM stopped usage of third party scanner tools. However, I have watched a few videos about these scanners [multiple brands] and at a minimum they appear to be useful to troubleshoot the vehicle. Thank you.
A Actron CP9690 can test ABS and live data, freeze frame, record, graphing, air bags, also reset oil schedule lights, turn MIL lights off, code solution, works up to 2013 but is updatatable. It has OBD I cables for Ford G.M., Chrysler, and 2 Toyota cables. It has a black pouch and instructions. It has a cigarette lighter cable.
Good description of this scanner. I have the same model and have never seen a software or firmware update. The manual refers us to Harbor Freight's website and put in the model number. Of course, the search comes back with zero results, which means not update. Has anyone found an update anywhere else?
I stopped at 2:45, so if this comes later my apology. You didn't show us how to hook it up, you are pressing buttons out of frame. Do you have to select what car/truck manufacturer and if so, did you do that? Anyway, hope this stuff gets answered.
How do you record live data with the car running? I tried starting the car with the unit connected and it froze the screen (turned white). The manual says not to connect the unit while the ignition is on or running, so how the hell am I supposed to start the car if it zaps the screen?
I watched entire video. I did not see how you diagnose the problem you had with misfiring. I have a 2004 Marquis, been in the shop twice in the last month. Replaced plugs, 1 coil, other coils have less than 11,000 miles, new fuel pump, new throttle position sensor, new idle air intake valve, and after driving about 60 miles the last three times exactly the same problem occurs, being engine light comes on, rough idle begins after about 25 seconds when stopping at a red light, rough acceleration, sometimes shuddering. This car has about 230,000 miles. The first time I had this problem, I took the car to a mechanic that had a genuine Ford scanner, with a screen that showed the firing of all 8 cylinders. He replaced two coils, and the car ran like new for a long time. I have to wonder if my mechanic's scanner is not picking up something? IF you can give some specifics on how to diagnose a misfire, someone let me borrow their Cen-tech scanner #98614. I've never used a scanner before. I looked through the paper manual, but did not see any specifics on diagnosing misfires or screens showing cylinder firing or individual cylinder firing. Thanks
@@StreetersGarage Thanks for your help. I did click on live data, and every other grouping that was on the screen. What the scanner is showing is a 3055 $10 code, which is the number 5 cylinder. This website shows there are a number of things that can set off a 3055 code, besides the plug and coil. obd-codes.com/po3055 .
