Is the Panasonic GH5 II Worth It? // OR WAIT for the Lumix GH6??

- Is it worth getting the Panasonic GH5 II right now or should I wait for the Lumix GH6? That's the question I'm asking myself. I already have a GH5, so my gut is telling me to wait for the GH6 because I think feature and settings wise, it'll be worth the upgrade. However, the GH5 II is a great update to the original GH5. What are your thoughts, let me know below!

Personally, I couldn't wait for the GH6 and I bought the GH5II two months ago (it's my first LUMIX). Seeing that GH6 has been delayed, I think I did the right thing.

I’ve held off for the gh6. I really can’t wait to see what it’s all about, but this also seems like a great option if the gh6 is too pricy (or too delayed haha)

Honestly, I am excited by the prospect of a GH6 but I had a GH3, then a GH4, then an AF 100, then two GH5’s, then a GH5 Mk2. I have a lot of confidence in Panasonic and the MFT system.
Personally I did upgrade to the GH5 II. I think that the auto focusing, sharpness, colour science and the range of internal recordings. This with the improved stabilisation made it for me a good buy after trading in the GH5.
Hello steve, I used GH5 and I'd like to change camera, but I don't knoe if to wait for the GH6 orto upgrade to GH5 II. For me it is important continous AF. Could you tell me how much has it imroved please? Thnaks.
@@ExploringWorldTH-cam Hi - As far as I am concerned the auto focus is very much better than previously even after the GH5 firmware update .Probably as a result of removing the Optical low pass filter, the antireflective sensor coating and the far improved Venus engine. I shoot in cinema mode at 50 fps and all the tests seem to recommend higher frame rates for the very best results. I have to say that for me the auto focus system on the GH5II is no longer an issue.
@@ExploringWorldTH-cam It's improved to the extent that it is no longer an issue for me as it is now reliable. The improved Venus engine the removal of the optical filter and the new sensor coating are all contributory factors in this improvement. I use cinemascope 50p to record at 4k resolution and all the tests seem to indicate that a higher shutter speed is better so 50 fps better than 25 fps - personally I have found little if any difference.

I'm new to Lumix & MFT system. I've been looking at GH5, but have decided that I'm going to hold out for a clean used GH5M2. Up to now I was a Nikon DSLR fanboy, but I'm moving on to mirrorless & shooting video.
I’m brand new the LUMIX world and I’m looking to possibly buy the GH5M2. It seems like an awesome camera! Watching Caleb’s videos has been really informative. I think the GH5M2 would fit in well with the type of shooting style I plan on using it for. I do a lot of run and gun so IBIS is a huge plus! Any other suggestions or thoughts about my decision to purchase this camera would be greatly appreciated! Awesome video and thanks for sharing, Caleb!

Hello Caleb. Out of curiosity, have you managed to compare the GH5s to the GH5 II ? I was wondering that as I couldn't find any serious videos (review/corarizon) or even written reviews anywhere for that matter. Any chance do that in the future (if you haven't already) ?

Hi Caleb,as usual great video...maybe as one more alternative get a GH5s because the autofocus is fixed...it is mostly like S5.
If you don't need IBIS and love high iso low light shooting (second base iso with Vlog L is 5000) I would go with GH5s second hand...GH5s is an underrated camera imho...with better color science as well in comparaison with GH5 1.0 and as well DCI 4K 24,25,30 fps internally 10bit422..and slow mo 200 fps in hd and max 220 with crop.

I've been a Nikon DSLR and Olympus M1 and then M1 Mark II person. Always heard good things about the GH5. Always heard good things about Fuji. Heard good things about the new Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. Was in a camera store at the beginning of the year and they had a used Fuji X-T4. I had never seen one. Picked it up. Loved it. Bought it. Had it two months. Starting hating it. Sold it. Spent some time with a Nikon Z6 ii. Just didn't like it. Started wondering what the GH5II would be like. Decided to buy one. With the Olympus 12 to 40 2.8 because of its excellent manual focus. And I love it. Ended up buying the Voigtlander 17.5 and 25 and 42.5. And I've gone in just a couple months from looking for mirrorless cameras with good autofocus to using a GH5 II with manual focus. All of this. Completely separate. From anything the GH5 ever was. Or anything that GH6 will be.

I have a GH5 II and it’s amazing. Used it for a full day vlog (using AF-C face tracking) and it performed amazingly. Vlog is up on my channel if you’re interested in seeing how it performed. Switching to this for a vlogging/TH-cam camera coming from a Sony A6400.
Used GH5 for years on jobs and for fun. I have a GH5s and am waiting for GH6 if it's a significant upgrade or maybe I'll get a GH5II ... Price will be a deciding factor. Will the GH6 be worth a much higher price?
Hi Caleb, nice video! I have a question: why would you want to shoot in DCI? Almost no one can view DCI, apart from cinemas and other places where a video gets projected. So what’s the benefit?
I ask this question ALL THE TIME. Of course a professional shot with a commercial client or a movie...but most stuff these days gets watched on a cellphone or a laptop and for most lap tops 1080p is just what you want. Of course there is the argument "future proof" but for a number of years 6k and 8k has been hyped...yet this laptop screen stay stubbornly at 1080p....hmm....
i personally like the wider aspect ratio but when it comes down to it a majority of stuff is in 16:9 on the web so the standard uhd is fine. I think it's the option of having it for producing things like short or long films for presentation is key. it's there when you need it. i like using it and having the 60fps 10bit 420 option is great.
@@CalebHoover thanks for your reply. I personally shoot with a G9 and didn’t miss the lack of DCI. Even for some client work i did. I do however record to an Ninja V to get 60p 10-bit 422 in prores out of the G9. That to me is more useful than DCI. Great talking to you. Had already subscribed
Was thinking of picking up the S1H but gh6 rumors look promising. With that in mind should I just make that S1H buy or wait. Lol I really hate this part of gear

I'm actually looking around and shopping for different cameras I just haven't decided if I'm going to stay with Panasonic move onto Sony or Canon.
Or actually get a real Cinema Camera such as a z cam or black magic. I haven't really decided.

I have one question for you and I am hoping I will get an answer. I love IBIS of M43 .In 2020 I have a chance to test it and I love so much.But that was of my friend who sold it. I am a Nikon DX DSLR shooter for video with d7200. I shoot in low light mainly stage shows at schools and colleges. My DX Nikon's ISO 3200 fulfill low video shoot requirement but lack IBIS. Sometimes tripods and monopods I can't use on stage and down stage as per situation so handheld is a must. Don't want to use gimbal .Can GH5 and GH5II fulfill iso needs without noise or very less noise to shoot low light video with matching Nikon dx iso 3200 level with Panasonic IBIS in manual mode and that is my question? I hope you understand and please excuse for my poor explanation. It will help me in purchasing better next camera. Thank you Caleb for all your videos.
full frame or Gh5s with dual native
Currently I have a Canon M50 and want to upgrade, but don’t know if going with GH5 II or move to full frame and buy the S5. Your videos have really help me to evaluate both options
if you want cheap with small body and lenses, decent bokeh and good cheap tele go with GH5 II, but if you want better photo, great bokeh and lowlight but bigger and much more expensive go with S5. MFT vs FF
@@alpinthor thanks currently I have the Sigma 18-35 F 1.8 and the Canon EF 50 mm F1.8 was planning to use it with a speedbooster with the GH5 II if I end buying it. If I go with the S5 will have to start buying new lenses
@@peregrinandoporpuertorico8293 tips if you decide to bought the gh5ii, the sigma 1.4 prime lenses trio for MFT is the best for lumix mft system. Much cheaper but sharper than pana leica or olympus at equivalent focal length and aperture.
@@alpinthor I have the sigma 16mm for my Canon M50 and is a great lens. Will definitely consider those lens if I go with the GH5 II.

I own a GH5. I would choose G9 Over GH5 mk2 as a secondary camera (G9 ibis and autofocus identical with MK2). G9 is far cheaper than GH5 mk2 .
Love my g9. For long corporate interviews though ... That record limit is annoying :p but still ... Incredible camera, dirt cheap used as well.
@Random Thought why have Panasonic been so skittish about the weather sealing on the G9, for many it's a deal breaker but have received so contradictory specs about weather sealing on the G9 I never even considered it an option ?

Anybody here uses Gh5 II in wedding videos? How does it works in low light situations? Highest iso before video noise?
I’m torn. I’d like to wait for GH6, but for what i shoot and plan to shoot I think the mk2 is sufficient and a great price point.
M2 is a great camera. the gh6 is looking legit tho
my strategy is to wait for gh6 and hope for price drop in gh5 / gh5 II .. gh6 definitely going out of budget to around $2,5-3k price. i just heard today that GH5 is no longer going to be purchesable in stores, once they sold the ones they have thats it, no more new GH5's. mark II will still be in stores tho
O still have the first gh5, and its still a monster.
The GH5 M2 is already plenty enough camera for me. The GH6 will be more money, so I will put that saving toward lenses.
I agree. I can imagine a meeting. Where somebody says. Hey let's do a firmware update the GH5 to have this and this and this that the S5 has. And somebody on the team says...no can do. Processor old. Memory full. So then somebody says hey. Let's put all that S5 stuff in the GH6. And somebody says. It's going to be 2 years before we put out a GH6. So somebody says. Let's update the GH5 to have a new processor and new memory so we can put all this stuff that we've learned designing the S5 into a new upgraded GH5. The amazing thing of course is that management said yes.

I always wait.. Even when camera is launched... .theres bugs and issues needing fixing. So waiting solves that... as well as always having the latest and greatest... I may not ever own any camera.. But at least I'm not stuck with a dinosaur...even if that dinosaur is only 6 months old!
GH6 We love Lumix. For ever!
So, i just love cameras and one day last month i was browsing products on eBay and saw GH5 on auction. I did a bid and won one too for about 780 USD. Although i was dreaming about sony a7sIII but the price wouldn’t justify my usage of cameras in general. I think I’ll be using GH5 after getting my hands on to this camera I’m liking it especially 780 USD price.
Is the autofocus of the GH5ii like the autofocus of the Lumix S5? Or better?
Significantly better than the GH5. Since it has the AF of the S5, I would guess it is as good, if not better, because the sensor is smaller, and the processor doesn’t have to work as hard…

For me, using M.Zuiko Pro glass, with the GH5II, it is pretty much 95-97% accurate. I do struggle in some low light situations, and when the subject is something rather ambiguous or bright…

@@superzero4250 i had the 20-60 kit lens. Lot of pulsing even with af speed down 😞 I really love the lumix series but i need good auto focus. Now with the canon R5 I‘am very happy. But i will buy a GH6 if the focus is fixed 😉👍
As a GH5 owner. Panasonic wants $2500 for the GH6 and the current spec were already given of the GH6. It gonna be a hard sell for that price point. GH6 must have dual pixel auto focus and built in ND Filter and low light performance must be as good as GH5S. For the same price, I go with full frame EOS r6 or A7 iv.
I own the g9. Latest Firmware. The truth about Autofocus: hunting and bumping in the Background all the Time. Not useable.
that's the thing about this is that the background pulsing is very noticeable on shots like talking heads. it might be usuable for some type of shots but not all for sure.
At first.... Your light Setup looks amazing. Second....your videos are amazing. The Gh5 is still a very good camera for beginners. If you already own a gh5 go with just a second one safe some Money AND buy some nice glass. Or do it like me. Buy the Lumix S5 System it is AWESOME I CAN TELL YOU
Is Panasonic splitting GH series into two? I think they won't promote GH6 as an update to GH5. GH5II is the true successor of GH5.
Just bought one and the screen doesn’t focus. It’s purpleish and yellow at times. It doesn’t focus showing a picture
Panasonic full frame budget is not in my range.
The Lumix S5 is around the same price of the GH5 Mk II while being full frame.
@@robinwouldcraft9441 Thank you for a reply, but s5 full frame lenses are costly and M43 lenses are cheap and get on sale now these days. But so many videos on youtube shows its IBIS is jumpy while walking and GH5ii is 6.5 stops better. So, considering these factors I am confused and could not make a purchase decision as low light performance like ISO equivalent to Nikon dx 3200 with low or no noise is required.Or should I wait n save more money for GH6 and it will include dual gain technology like GH5s and S5 including best IBIS too .Please, answer.
@@neerajjaswal5991 I'm not an expert on it, but from what I've seen if you're specifically after good low light performance, a larger sensor - full frame is what you need. No way around it - even the GH6 when it comes out probably will still have that weakness relative to a full sensor.

i agree that for low light a full frame like the S5 would be good or the GH5s with dual native ISO is the way to go. I'm hoping the GH6 will have dual native. The full frame will have much better performance and some of those sigma L mounts are fair priced.
The GH5s got AF improvements and the red border at the same time as the G9.

What you are saying doesn’t make sense. You are recommending gh5ii for people who haven’t used a gh5 before but you don’t think the gh5 owners should upgrade to gh5ii.
In other words, you are asking people to spend $1000 more and get a gh5ii when a gh5 should be totally fine.
let me simplify it for you - get the gh5ii if you want to get a gh5 now and have the money wait for the gh6 if youre already shooting on a gh5 or do whatever you want 😂

You should stop beating the horse, put what's left in a little baggy and bury it. Then buy into a new system. If weight is the issue, check out Fuji, the new video cameras they have coming out will at least be is as good if not better than the GH6 and the GH5s.
