- Should you get the LUMIX GH6 or S5IIX if you're looking to upgrade your GH5? They are both great cameras with a ton of cinema camera style features and I just scratch the surface of what these cameras can do. But these might be a few things to consider when switching from the GH5.

I got the gh6 2 months ago and I'm happy. It takes beautiful pictures and the video capabilities make me excited to learn more.
Couldn't agree more!
S5iix this crop at 4k 60fps regarding lumix manuals its oversampled from 6k to 4k, its actual real 4k, its not a crop with quality loss as everyone is thinking :) there is some videos with quality tests :) so for me 60p is just good feature without changing the lense when needed closer shots ;)
I appreciate the video brother. You helped my decision making process tremendously. Salut!
thanks for jumping in the comments! I’m glad we can have a conversation about it
GH6 is the one for me. The S52X has a larger sensor and better autofocus but after that, the GH6 beats it in just about any other way. Both great cameras!
that’s definitely the hard part both of them are such great cameras
I'll stick with my GH5 for a while longer...
💯
Gh5 is superior 😂😂
I upgraded to s5iix from gh4. And I have already started regretting my decision. I should have gone for gh6. Two reasons: (1. small reason) upgrading to s5iix is literally twice as expensive than upgrading to gh6 because full frame L mount lenes are really expensive. and my old MFT lenses can't be used on S5iix. (2. big reason) the crop factor of massive 1.6x while shooting 4k at 48p. While switching between normal speed and S&Q. this crop factor can be more annoying than you can imagine.
those are some great points!
Thanks Caleb , sadly though I am still on my GH3 but this helps me a lot when thinking about the upgrade. Very clear and honest review…cheers
I have upgrade gh5 to the sony fx30. 3 reasons why i did it. 1 bether low Light 2 bether autofocus 3 lov quick menu to your important settings. And the color right out of the box looks very nice.... but the color of the gh5 is not the negative for my but all of the above.
i’ve honestly heard some really great things about the FX 30 I have not used it. I have use the FX 3 and I love that but only hear good things about the FX 30.
Switching from the GH5 to the S5-IIx is not just a new body, it's a system change and that should be thought differently than for example the switch from the GH5 to the GH5s, GH5-II, GH6 or OM-1. A system change might be a long term decision and you have to consider future developments. I'm sure, the better AF will not be exclusive in the l-mount and the better 4k60p and 4k120p will be not exclusive in the MFT-cameras. So long term you probably will be using one system with a bigger new S1H and larger, more expensive lenses or a new GH6 and the existing lenses. I think, long term there will be always a 2x difference in price and weight if you buy the good stuff.
I got the GH6 first day and it already has 1,5 years of usage. I wouldn't buy it today. I would wait it out. If the better AF is necessary right now, the GH6 is no option. If I would switch to FF, I would go for the S5-IIx with the 20-60 and some of the F1.8 primes. I would get the better AF and low light but I would lose the option for longer lenses in a lot of situations because I can't take them with me on the bicycle.
Just buy both! For what i do even my gh5 af was good enough, gh6 af is better. I dont want to give up what the gh cameras have : 4.3 format like arri, no crop in 4k5o,my mft lenses with lots of reach and small size, less bokee so i dont have to stop down as much if i dont want everything blurry, 4k120… the gh6 simply is a better video kamera. The s5 is for photos, low lite, no slo mo stuff and things better af is needed. I want both.
I think these are some really good points. Thanks for Sharing!
I'm waaaaiiiiitiiiing.......... for GH good focus. One day. Until then, manual focus. to save money.
Love it!
Caleb, thank you for the video. I have a 35mm camera (Minolta X-370) I want to jump into a digital but I don’t have any idea which camera to buy (gh5, gh6 or S5iix) one think is sure I want to keep and grow with the camera first as photographer and the as video maker. With you experience, which way you go if you need to start again. Thank you for you help or anybody can give me a suggestion! 😉
Wouldn't the G9Mk II make more sense? I've got a GH5 and had a GH6 but sent it back due to the streaking issues and awaiting the G9Mk II. Investing in FF glass when you've already invested in M4T makes little commercial sense for me. So sticking with M4T :-) thanks for the video
dope video ! thx for sharing ! My thoughts: I've had all 3 cameras, love all of em. but, the GH5 and the GH6, have better stabilization than the S5MK2.. I dont know what it is, or why.. but its just a fact lol. The GH5 or the GH6, dont have that slow - sea ship - on a boat float to it.
It's pretty crazy how true that thing you said in the beginning about not needing to upgrade from a GH5 is.
Seriously amazing camera. I mean, I actually did upgrade to the GH6 (😂😂😂), but I still have the GH5 and use it often.
I know even heading into 2024 the GH5 still holds its own. I have noticed a bit better image quality in the GH6 in the S52X over the GH5 but still especially for someone just getting into it the GH5 is plenty of camera.
Do you need good AF or really good low light? Are you a bokeh addict? The S5ii(x) then. Otherwise the GH6.
💯
Bought the gh6 for 1300 from Amazon a few months ago. I had a gh3 before. Love it so far.
i have gh5 now, and i wanna update but i don't know which one, gh7 or s5iix? What do you think about this?
How's the EF-L mount on the S5iiX? Thinking of upgrading from a GH5, but most of my lenses are EF mounts.
Still have my GH5, waiting for the "S1 II X" or "S1R II" with PDAF
right on
Love your work brother Caleb. I own 2 x G7 + 2 x GH5 & 1 x GH5 II (why?) For the matching colour science and I use them all as different camera angles in my home studio for my live-stream shows among other things. I didn't think the GH6 was worth the upgrade and the S5IIX made my expensive mf3 lens collection redundant. I am super happy with what I have and it will take something very special for me to consider upgrading or adding any new cameras. (Hmm G9II?)
Love this vid, I have the GH5 S which already has dual native iso and a bit of a wider sensor so I can hold off until a GH6 mark ii or GH7 comes out if I’m switching entire body systems involving getting rid of my lenses I’m going for Sony I’m sorry 😭 that FX3 is calling my name
i’ve played with that FX3 and not gonna lie That’s a great great camera!
@@CalebHoover & trust me I LOVE lumix i don’t even care about the new stuff I want that S1H just as bad that’s why I’m not jumping into anything new because I easily get buyers remorse 😭
I need a 2nd camera or i guess a new primary camea and let the gh5 be the secondary
Caleb, you alone make me want to use my s5iix more lol
haha 🫶
Hi Caleb. What do you think about the GH5s? I have a GH5 and the biggest problem is, as we all know, the poor low light performance. I think the right solution, at least at the moment, is to combine my GH5 with a GH5s, which I would buy used.
i know a ton of people who had that combo for that exact reason. I definitely think you can't go wrong with that 👍
Nice topic. having the exactly same dilemma.
Think it will end up with a s5m2x
such a great camera!
I think I'm leaning towards the GH6. I'm coming in from a G7 so I think the GH6 has enough features to help me out right now.
I am in bed with 10 pricy panny/lecia lenses so I have no choice to make. LOL. But my question is this Caleb, I have stayed away from lenses outside of the Panasonic and Lecia's because of the double stabilization factor. It does not seem to concern you. Is there a big difference with using a Sigma or others when it comes to stabilizing. Enjoyed this video. Thanks for making it.
Hey , what tripod or gimball you recommend for
Video's , i own GH5 + M.zuiko 60 mm macro i do need some not to expansive gimbal or tripod ...?
I went from the gh5 to the s5 to the s5ii, I didn't have the patience to wait for the s5iix
haha nice!
It's a bit of a dilemma. I agonised over the GH6 and S5 but ended up with the GH5M2. It was so different and improved over my GH5 that I sold it. I found the GH5M2 is essentially a new camera in a GH5 body and found its giving imagery close to Kodak Portra 160 when printed on Supra paper, which is just where I like to be both in stills and video. I've also found the GH5M2 can get the Kodak Ektarchrome 100 E100 feel so one happy punter here.
I remember when I use the GH five mark two I was really really happy with it
I have two GH5s and a GH5ii, if I was looking at an upgrade, it would be between the GH6 and the G9ii.
Do you think GH5 footage will mix ok with S5IIx? I do mostly social media content for clients whos videos just end up on IG and FB. I'm upgrading to a S5IIx but am considering only getting one instead of two, and then just using my GH5 as a b cam when I rarely need one. Thoughts on this?
Are you still able to do good slow mo shots with the s5iix ? I need good low light, auto focus, and capability of slow mo
I put down my G9 and bought the S5ii with the 20-60 and 50 1.8 for $2147. I could use my flash and my cards. But I want higher capacity cards. In my G9 I had 2 64g cards want 128g cards.
I would slightly disagree with you saying the GH6 isn’t great in low light. With DR Boost on, the base ISO is so high that the GH6 handles most low light situations fairly well. The S5II is of course better, but there aren’t too many situations where I can’t get a good low-light image from the GH6. Awesome video, I love the comparison!
I just haven’t been happy with the DR boost but I love that it’s working for you and you’re right it’s not horrible in low light but when compared to the S52X…
@@CalebHoover for sure! DR Boost is a finicky way to get an awesome image and means I need NDs almost all the time. The dual native ISO is a big plus for the S5
Excellent video, Caleb. As someone who has owned the GH5S since launch and it still serves me well, I have eyed both of these cameras as an upgrade or at least as a new A Cam. You made some really valid points on both, including the fact that if you already have a Gh5, you probably have some glass already for the 6 and save some money there. I recently sold about half of my M 4/3 glass that I wasn't using, in fact 95 percent of the time I'm just using my 12-35mm f/2.8, so I may sell more. But after watching this I think I'm going to still go with the S5IIX for a handful of reasons, even if the upfront cost is going to be a bit higher.
1.) I currently use the GH5s for video, and a Fujifilm X100V for photography. I'd really love to not have to have both and only carry a true hybrid camera that I could trust its autofocus with both types of shooting, so the S5IIX takes it there. I'd love to get into more paid photo gigs that I can trust the autofocus, which I've never had since most of my time withe cameras has been with the GH series. I also have a RS3 Mini that's the first gimbal I've liked in years, so having sticky AF for video will be great, glad it still holds up after using it for months now.
2.) I've noticed in the last few years, I tend to stick with only 1-3 lenses rather than 5 or more. Micro 4/3 glass may be cheaper, but I think I'd be set with a 24-70mm from Sigma, an 85mm prime, and there's some promo deal Panasonic is doing where they're taking $400 off one of their lenses when you buy an S5IIX.
3.) Dual ISO > Dynamic Range Boost for sure, glad you brought that up.
Maybe if I find a good deal on a used GH6, which I've seen some go for as low as $1200, I may replace my GH5S and keep some glass for it. For now, the S5IIX makes the most sense for what I'll be using it for. The only real downsides I'm seeing is the initial investment in gear, and the cropped 4K at 60 fps which is such a bummer. Is that something that can be potentially fixed in a software update?
I definitely feel like you make some really good points here the crop I don’t think it’s gonna be a software or firmware update, unfortunately but maybe in the future cameras, they can get rid of that crop. 4K120 needs to happen though.
Wouldn’t the cropped 60 4k emulate the super 35 sensor used in most awarded films? I’d maybe film everything in that cropped mode and save the full sensor for photography. Just a thought
I still use my GH5! Appreciate the honest opinion Caleb!
G9 II with PDAF on the horizon 📸
could be there’s lots of rumors
@@CalebHoover See, I was right lol!
I want them both
💯🔥
G9 II makes a lot of sense for me :)
where i live s5 is 2400 and the gh6 1600 thats quite a bit difference
Gotta get that Anglebird 512GB CF express TypeB card for like $170. It's the only card u need for the GH6.
How is the Angelbird holding up? It originally wasn’t on the GH6 list for approved devices but I would love to get it for sure.
@@scottmorgason it’s absolutely perfect. I even contacted Angelbird and they said there own tests with the GH6 showed the card made light work of the cameras codex’s.
I have a buddy that got this one too, and he seems to like it
you can also get Delkin brand. I got the 512gb for $185 total on BH sale they sometimes have. Works great and i read they have lifetime warranty.
@@leadinglightfilms I’ll check it out… thanks!
Here is how I would answer the question......Just buy a Sony camera its a great upgrade LOL.....j/k sort of LOL Love ya bro! Great video. I would say go S5iiX all the way. 4K Live crop is fantastic....I miss it. I want that lut option.....Looks like I need a ZV-E1 or a7cii. Hmmmm.....lots of graffe tape, its a must in the camera bag.
ha ha Paul with the hot take I know I can always count on you for that Sony love
@@CalebHoover at least you can count on me for something lol 😂
I'm spoiled, i work with both GH6 and S5mkII . I didn't sell my gh5 since it's still working great, and is still being used sometimes.
I have to say the GH6 is the most impressive camera of them all, it can do everything. I sometimes use its autofocus and i must say it's not as bad as we think.
I respectfully disagree. The AF on my gh6 works! It puts focus boxes around people even if they are moving fast erratically..and tracks them. And i dont see much high contrast pulsing like my gh5. I also diagree regarding color. Skin tones from the gh6 are the best of any lumix camera and color in general is stunning. I have had no streaking issues. Of course the pdaf on the 9 is nice but not perfect like Sony. But my experience ...gh6 A roll..is a beast. You just have to learn how to ride that beast.
M4/3 new camera or wait !
🤪
Gh6 with a pd lidar kit
The gh6iix🎉 again . Trade 2gh5s got me half way for s5iix body. Also got the 6 love both. The X 12k iso is badazz w nr Just get both😂hate ssd but nm.Thank You
I'm waiting for the GH7. Period.
gh6 or new m43 autofocus ,..
GH5II All day every day, and twice on Sundays…
Simply put, it edges out the original GH5 in every way.
Especially if you already have a bevy of µ4/3 lenses.
Paired with Atomos Ninja V, plus DMW-XLR1, all set.
GH6 too cumbersome, CF cards not cost effective.
S5II, Full Frame overrated and over hyped, PDAF too.
😏
If the auto focus isn't fixed I see no reason to upgrade
Keep the GH5 or go with the GH6, especially because the I think you can find the GH6 for much less than 1700.
I bought mine used on Facebook marketplace with a 12-60 lens for 1400 barely used.
@@patrickdolan. Great deal!
oh yeah, there’s some great deals if you dig
Yeah my GH5 is still great camera - and I even accepted some problems with af :)
Can’t go wrong with that GH5
The way that they dropped the price of the gh6 so fast, I would be pissed if I bought it brand new. No way I will buy into the G series cameras again.
i paid full price on release day, it's almost 1000 euros cheaper now !
Hey I’m doing short films and interviews, which camera is good for me gh6? Or s5ii ? Thanks
Can’t go wrong with either one but if you need auto focus, definitely S5ii
What about slow mo? Can you still do it with the s5iix?
GH6 - Internal 4K ProRes is the deciding factor.
