- The Panasonic Lumix GH6 mirrorless camera has some amazing features to produce insanely good video. But, to record such high quality video, you need a whole lot more than just the camera and a lens. In this video, I break down the storage media required by the GH6 in order to record its highest quality video formats. I explain bit rates, recording limits, and, most importantly, cost.

Editing All-I footage actually requires less processing power than LongGOP, because the computer doesn't have to do the calculations involved with the predicted and bi-directional frames, especially around cuts that interrupt the sequence. With All-I there are 24 actual images per second and the computer doesn't have to generate them as you go along. If the computer has trouble with All-I footage, it's usually the hard drive that can't keep up. But with modern SSD's that's normally not an issue.

Wonderfully clear and well-presented. On the fence about the GH6 but the “hidden upgrade” (hardware etc.) you reference is significant.
Personally what I would do is get the GH6 but then use the formats that the GH5 had until I’m ready to edit 5.7k meaning I don’t have to upgrade later and the camera would basically evolve with my editing computer.

The GH5II is a very under appreciated wonder. With the Atomos Ninja V you can record directly to SSD's. So, naturally I bought "five" 1TB SSD's for less than $75 each. The great thing about the GH5II, it supports internal recording while simultaneously external recording. Which the GH5 could not do.
So now the backups are possible, and you could record in relay, giving you 256GB of backup capacity instead. I have a couple of 256GB v60 cards that work fine, which means I have 512GB for backup.
I took advantage of that same discount last October, it was too good to pass up...

The GH6 has an amazing number of video formats that it can record in, including a 5.7K, 29.97fps, 10-bit 4:2:0 at 200Mbps. This is a really clean format, that will record all day on V60 SD cards (and maybe on V30 SD cards) without a glitch. On top of that, a Lexar 256GB V60 SD card is selling for $73 right now on Amazon. I have that card, and it works fine on the GH6 with any format up to 400Mbps, but the 5.7K, 29.97fps, 10-bit 4:2:0 at 200Mbps format is really sweet. It has plenty of detail, and you can pan/zoom around and still have a perfectly clean 4K image. And if you are delivering video in HD, you can pan/zoom in even more. The GH6 has an astonishing number of formats, and nobody has really talked about that.
Agree. 200 bits seams a perfect spot for video file. 400 it’s overkill. With HLG and H.265 codec it’s more then enough. I use it on GH5 and I’m very satisfied. It provides me with image quality I was searching for. Organic. Cinematographic. Not noisy. A lot space to work with. And you can record all on cheep Samsung EVO SD card.

Thanks so much for this. I’m a complete beginner, I owned the GH5 and I wanted to add a second camera for my Road Trips and Cinematography practices. I was having a discussion with a good friend of mine about the same exact situation and you just confirmed it. I have a few lenses already so it would be easy. Getting the GH5 II as soon as I get off from TH-cam, Lol.

Great video, as a fellow owner of 2 gh5 and a wedding videographer I feel the same way about the new gh6.
I will probably win the 2023 season to buy one.
My only doubt is why not recording in h 265 ( even if is a lot heavier to edit, but gpu acceleration can help a lot)
5.7K (5728×3024) (17:9) at 59.94p, 300Mbps (4:2:0 10-bit LongGOP) or 23.98p, 200Mbps instead that the prores. Pro res is of course better is some ways, but only if you need a lor of color correction or advance editing, something I don't do in weddings. Thank you!!

I used the exact same logic and got a used mint GH5mark II on Ebay from Japan (which I received in 72 hours) at $950, couldn't resist. Very pleased with it, awesome camera
The SSD recording is going to be key. I don't see any other way to use this camera for wedding filmmakers without it. Buying a smallrig cage with the SSD holder seems like a great option. The only downside is no backup recording. I've personally never recorded files to an SSD before and I know they can be a bit less reliable than SD cards.
My thoughts exactly. Im able to sleep at night knowing I have back ups. Reliability and peace of mind are essential in weddings. No do-overs. Thanks for adding to this.
When possible, an external recorder can serve as a backup since that goes out through the hdmi port.

I got the GH6 a couple of months ago and found the best deal at B&H open box for just under $1300. I also found the best and cheapest CF cards that allow full functionality to be AngelBird CF Express B SE cards for only $129...that price seems unreal compared to the competition and it will enable quite a bit of video at a more affordable rate than regular V90 SD cards.
Great video, thank you. I am also gh5 user. I am switching from gh5, to gh5 m II. So it will be my cam A, cam B will be my second gh5 and I think it will be good set up filming weddings or simple interviews. :)
short story long: for wedding shooting, you found more convenient to keep on gh5 series, for storage reason. But, for people shooting comercial or video clips, or people looking for a better image quality, GH6 may be the answer.
I shoot b-roll for TV documentary news channels. They request prores from time to time. Gh6 is perfect for me. If I'm shooting plays and concerts I'll drop down to 10bit long gop or even 8bit. Having the option to go higher formats is awesome. I don't need to rent additional equipment when they ask for prores. Different use case.
Cool video explaining a real issue that people often don't account for.
This is a dilemma that has recently started to become an issue at the highest levels of filmmaking as well.
Back in the old days of Super35 film stock, because of the cost of stock and processing, all but the most expensive movies had a shooting ratio. Typical for a tighter budget movie was something like 10:1 - that is, if the final movie was expected to be 2hrs long, there would only be 20 hours of film stock budgeted to shoot the entire film. That's really not a lot. Film crews had to be exceptionally disciplined in shooting to avoid wasting precious stock.
Then digital cinema came along, and for a while shooting ratios became a thing of the past - you could just roll and roll and roll forever. Rolling resets and partial resets in the middle of shots became common - almost documentary style. Film crew got slack. We'd start shooting before a shot was properly worked out or rehearsed.
In recent times, for the first time in about 15 years, I've started to hear "shooting ratio" get thrown around on set again, and it's because of the cost of media and the cost of storing the footage. Some of our cameras record at almost 6Gbit/s at 24p. Media cards for these cameras can cost thousands of dollars PER CARD. It's insane.
It’s so interesting that you mentioned shots not being properly rehearsed because there was essentially endless storage media. It’s funny how scarcity causes a need to get it done better in less takes.

Excellent, well-presented and informative - thanks! One aspect you hint at, but don't go into detail on is what difference there may be in the final product, whether it's deliverables or just generally speaking... will the client be able to discern a significant quality bump? Can you? Is there actually any discernible difference in image quality when viewed on a laptop or even a TV screen? It would be interesting to show 4K footage playing on a 60" TV vs. 5.7K. Are there any TV's that can actually display 5.7K or will it be downsampled first and, if so, is there a visible difference when viewing the two files? It seems to me that unless you are using the GH6 to film broadcast quality commercials, as you say, or a feature film, the increase in file sizes that it's possible to record is now subject to the law of diminishing returns.
You dont deliver in 5.7k but the image will look better anyway
The GH6’s 4K looks significantly better than the the GH5’s 4K. That is not to say the GH5 is bad. I use both together frequently. By the way, the GH5 paired with an ATOMOS NINJA V produces a gorgeous image.
I never had the original GH5 I went from my GH4 and just bought a GH52 as well, Got a new one from offer up for 1k. Now with my GH5s, I've got a pretty nice setup.

In my personal experience, I don't think 5.7K resolution is super useful to many of us right now, and maybe not in the near future.
But I have seen an HDR TV in my brother in law's Living Room, and when he showed me video of someone walking down a wet street, possibly in another country, it almost looked like I was looking at a WINDOW! It was awesome. So, whatever you do, I think 10Bit color is worth it. They need to have a display that can utilize it, but I think it's a very useful feature that you would be happy to have used, if you choose to use it.
Practically, though, I don't know what you will need to do.

Yeah. It pretty much lives on my Ronin with an Olympus 7-14 on it.
I have gh3 and want to upgrade. This was a great review as I did not think about storage. I'm only filming my son's soccer games so this is not a business need. Probably going to upgrade to gh5.
you are so right! when im Using my Gh5 Believe it or not. most of my projects i shot in 1080p 24/50fps im editing very fast and only if there is a creative need i shot on 4k.
The only way I can see it maybe worth upgrading to the GH6 is if you could still record at the 150Mbps and you could change that in the settings. The GH6 is better in low light and the auto focus is better. 400Mbps is to much and its not worth it. And I don't even think anyone would notice anyway.
There is a one issue with the GH6 something about filming indoors when there are windows. Gerald Undone talked about it on his channel. Panasonic said they would fix it with firmware. I think its a little better with the firmware but the issue is still there. I don't think that issue is there with the GH5.

now after update we can now record directly to ssd in proreshd so cheaper ssd 1tb gets me 4 hrs in prores and 11hrs in all intra. faster editing in prores but like you said no back up but i mean ...
I bought 5 128gb v60hdsx v90 cards for 32 bucks a peace a month ago!!! Love it for my gh5 it’s perfect for all gh5 formats in my opinion

What color profile do you typically shoot with? I typically shoot in Cine D for B roll because it offers some flexibility to grade, but without the time and effort, it would be for log or HLG. However, the GH5 II Cine D looks a bit muddy to me. Do you have any ideas to remedy this?
I typically shoot in natural or V-Log depending on the project. I haven’t noticed any issues with the GH-5II Cine-D looking different, butni hardly ever use it so I’ll take your word for it. Can you be more specific on what you mean by “muddy?” Maybe try adjusting the profile settings a bit. Sorry I can’t be more help. Hard to tell without looking at examples.
@@DukesFilms Skin tones look blotchy and spotty once graded. I have tested and found a great workflow using the camera's Hybrid Log Gamma, and Davinci resolves color management. My Tests with HLG show incredible detail recovery in the shadows and low-light situations with minimal noise on the GH5 II. For most workflows, HLG suits me very well and is easier to work with than V log since Resolve will detect the Rec2020 color space and convert it automatically (I also Don't have the VLog upgrade on my two GH5s)
I think the Dynamic Range Boost is too gimicky to use. But the Dual ISO in the GH6 does make up for it over the GH5/ii. But I wish they kept the dual SD card slot and left the bigger codec for the SSD via the USB.
Yea if you want to maximise the GH6 but you could have purchased GH6 and just used lower bit rates for now rather than buy older cam just because you don’t want to buy all the extras now - the GH6 does have the lower bit rates as an option too.
Absolutely! The cost of the camera was the only thing. I actually got a GH5s and GH5ii both for slightly more than the cost of a GH6.

ALL-I is much easier to edit than IPB, since IPB is compressed. Your computer will have an easier time with ALL-I and any even easier time with RAW. That doesn’t get rid of the storage problem, but if computer performance is a concern, record at higher bitrates.
I just bought my first gh5 today and I was wondering why it kept stopping while recording.I kept trying to use 4K @ 24 400mbps and my card wasn’t fast enough
Congrats on the GH5! And yeah, you’ll need those V90 cards I talked about in the video to record ALL-I. But, honestly, the 150Mbps is still a great format if you have the lower cards.

I came to a similar conclusion, I use a GH5 and a GH5s and decided (after a recent 2 camera shoot) to buy a second Ninja V since the price of these is plummeting thanks to the new V +.
I use the NPF 960 on the locked down camera/ninja V and I use the lighter NPF 750 on my handheld combo (good for up to an hour)
I already had a 1tb SSD and a 500g/b SSD for my first Ninja V so it only cost £350 for the (new) 2nd Ninja V.
The way you explain this makes so much sense! The cost would Be dramastic ! Like myself a one man band i do small production videos and photos. And i Start to realize that If i want better results i need assistants For My shoots.. i Took My wife too For weddings and used 2 cameras .. The files size are big For whole Day shoot.
I Have seen gh5 videos that looks so amazing i cant belive its gh5 .. what proves For Many of us that ehst we Have IS enough. Strory is different If money aint a issue .. specially what hsppening For everyday cost nowadays . Time is so important too.

Just keep your eyes peeled for deals. BH had prograde v90 256gb cards for $188 a few weeks ago. Snapped some up for my R5, also v60’s are pretty cheap and will do 400mbps no problem

If you film in All-I 400 mbps onto a V90 card, is that similar quality to ProRes LT if you used a Ninja V? Or is ProRes LT superior to All-I 400? (I own a Ninja V and a GH5s). I see the data rate for ProRes LT is 342 Mb/s for 4K 25p.
It depends on how you define “superior.” As far as actual image quality and the data being recorded, the ALL-I h.264 formats technically record more data and include every frame which should mean better details in image quality, but honestly, I’d love to know if someone can visually see a difference. However, the ProRes, I think you’ll find is easier to edit with as it won’t bog down your computer as much. We edit using proxies anyway so it doesn’t really affect us.
Atomos publish a Target rate of 365 Mb/s for 4k @ 25p also I seem to recall that Prores is an All-i CoDec.
I agree your quoted Target rate for 4k 25p ProRes LT, that seems right. As for whether ProRes is an All-I codec, I think there are some differences between the two - All-I is not as easy to edit as ProRes according to some TH-camrs.
@@red2000films I found the Apple White Paper . . . As a variable bit rate (VBR) codec technology, ProRes uses fewer bits on simple frames that would not benefit from encoding at a higher data rate. All ProRes codecs are frame-independent (or “intra-frame”) codecs, meaning that each frame is encoded and decoded independently of any other frame. This technique provides the greatest editing performance and flexibility.
Thx for that, it helped me realize concretely what I only vaguely expected: using the GH6 the extent I believed I would, is out of reach with + conventional storage...
SSD rec would've been the way out of this nightmare, but the options are too limited for me (can't get high framerates through it, notably), so why bother now? I could only wish upon firm updates about what's supported, but how silly would it be...
So since I got literally nothing now except smartphones 😂, I have 0 ecosystem obstacle, & everything to learn in term of practice...
I thus considered the FF option, S5 II, not only for the AF (many will 🤣here but as a newbie it would save me from & complete task to learn upfront alongside all the rest, being Manual Focusing... I'll start better, & have + time to improve later on) (+ I'll work alone so this delegation is quite a deal if I'm not behind the cam), but for low light advantage (the dual ISO of the GH6 lowers the delta between both, but still), while the limitation in codecs/formats wouldn't hurt as much in comparison, if I can't use some of the GH6's formats anyway !
Is it worth it for fiction, & later on event rec (not sure about which ones though, not confident enough yet anyway)? Would the $$ difference be too high once considering all the gear required to get a full set working (lenses, gimbal maybe, filters, gimbal maybe? etc) compared to M4/3 ?
edit: I forgot to mention I'd have to wait anyway, for the PDAF potential update to the GH6 (through a new model or firm update if the hardware was already planned in), & if other great discounts on it happen as it has recently (~1200$ for the body), it might change the game as well..
L mount lenses are pretty expensive for the S5 II, but the AF and low light capabilities are a huge benefit. I don’t think anyone would laugh at you wanting good AF. Only the real cinema snobs out there stick their noses up and claim to only use MF 100% of the time because “they’re so talented.” I use AF quite a bit on weddings with my GH cameras. It helps, especially when I’m the bright outdoors and I can’t see the monitor’s peaking. There’s always a trade off. S series is more money, but less headache and workarounds. The GH series are affordable, but require lights. It’s all about what you’re willing to sacrifice or pay.

It's the C-Fast card media that really stop me from getting the GH6. The type of stuff I do don't need that highest bitrate codec.

The following costs re just too high.
And if you produce for TH-cam or normal people - 98% of the screens are just able to handle 8bit.
So why all of these "stupid" 10/12/14R bit "high quality recording" videos on 8bit TH-cam with 16bit 44kHz audio?
Because they don't know.
GH5II or GH5S are still some of the best video cams out there and as long the world is watching everything in 8bit I will not put any money into something that is so useless and expensive as ultra high resolution recordings.

Good explanation on file sizes man. I just did the same thing; opted for the GH5ii for a really good price. I already have the GH5S and 2 BMP4K. I really wanted the dual recording feature. After picking up the S1 which now has 6k RAW, I really didn't see a immediate need for he GH6. Panasonic simply took way too long to release this camera. Even a year ago the GH6 would have made more sense than an S5 or S1.
Ps you forgot o mention you cnat use 14 cards with the gh5 becuase only one slot does the 2 version and the 1st slot for eh gh5 is 1 of sdcards

Yes. According to Samsung’s description, it can handle 540MB/s.
Yea the file sizes are massive, pretty much the same as black magic. But on black magic getting the SSD is cheaper and we have that option.
I noticed most of the 4k options are h265. I have a nice new $3k computer and it chokes trying to edit it.
Which means I have to use the bigger prores files. Or make proxies.
I uploaded some DR boost test files to TH-cam. It's way too noisy and you'll definitely need NR when using it.
So for me the only really benefit of this camera is 4k 120 and clean 6400 iso. But I'm not willing to pay $2300 for it. I already got the pocket 6k and it's amazing..
I'm sending this paper weight back and trying to decide what else I should get. I don't want to go Sony but I'm really needing a good gimbal camera with autofocus that cuts well with the pocket 6k.

Sou can use a v60 card for 400mbit files it works well i use the angelbird ones they are not expensive
Why you not taking GH5 advantage with H265 10 Bit in 6K HLG. That’s just give you the best image quality. Image you would expect from more expensive professional cameras. ALL I it’s advantage when you plan to grab a still from video for photography purposes. It’s also easier to process on computer.
if only files size is the issue, why don't you buy the GH-6 with all it's improved features and shoot using the same smaller formats as on the GH5 Mk II?
Funny you should mention that. With the Ssd firmware update, we did end up getting the GH6. Mainly still shoot weddings in 150gbps, but did max it out on a promo video last week. It was beefy, but gorgeous.

Same dilemma I had recently. I have GH5 and it is my first camera and it has a stock 12 to 60 mm lens. It offers exactly what I need but I would like to get a faster lens on it.
GH5 on a used market right now is so cheap you could get your investment back with one wedding maybe even. GH6 does have a usb charging option which is something I would use.

You rarely find someone with the technical capacity when it comes to cameras and gear.
You hit the nail on the head, I've ordered a GH6.
But the funny part is there's guys out there complaining about not internal RAW and so much other stuff...these same guys are delivering HD footage to their clients and their computers can't even handle HD 10 bit.
The GH6 is a beast, I love my GH5 and GH5s so it's gonna be a nice 3rd long awaited addition.
