You know what warms my heart? That even Kruggsmash manages to flood his tavern after all these hours of play. Makes me feel not so alone in this world of shoddy plumbing.
"Hey, why didn't we just build a tunnel below the sea instead of bothering building a bridge?" *Points at flooded tunnel after flooded tunnel* THIS. IS. WHY!
Imagine storming a bridge, and you hear whistling...then louder whistling followed by a score of your friends getting obliterated by one shot. The echo of the crack of the ballista releasing. And all you have is a wooden stick you're kidding yourself is a sword, and an overgrown kitty. Stupid elves...
This fortress really feels like one of those legendary fortresses you'd find in a fantasy novel, talking about how impassable it is, until some mad general thinks outside the box and finds a weakness that was hidden in plain sight but which nobody ever even considered.
For drainage, use floor bars rather than floor grates. I noticed water not getting through floor grates that well these days. Since I replaced them with bars, my drainage problem is fixed. Wall grates are no problem, so you can still use them to close off your magma supply and prevent things to creep into your drainpipes.
water pumps are mowing water very fast so the dwarves would need a lot more drainage to compensate for that. But there is a much easier fix : water stream comming form pumps should pass trhough a narrow diagonal between two walls. That would reduce all water preassure and allow much less water to flow further into the system compared to how the pumps are set up now.
A while back I had a similar mist generator that pumped water into a shaft that fell onto a statue surrounded by grates and it seemed to work OK. I had a cistern under the grates and a pump stack that took the water back up to the top of the shaft. So I think that by only pumping the water around instead of pulling it from an external source at top speed it prevented flooding. Like the pump would suck X units and then Y units + air until I stopped the pump and the space filled back up to X units. I had a floodgate that would open to let in more water when the cistern dropped below 3 far away from the pump inlet.

There was a children’s picture book back in the 90s that had a greenish monster with an amorphous shape (it might have been a person under a blanket, I don’t remember) and it was drawn with weird beady eyes that were sunken into their sockets. I remember being unsettled by it as a child. 11:01 Kruggsmash’s vomit monster looks basically what I remember it was except his is yellow. I LOVED that opening sequence. No commentary, just good drawings, suspense, and humor. So well done! Also, I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned yet but: you can totally attach a lever to the gear assembly you have between the two windmills so your dwarves can switch the lever on and off to start or stop water flow instead of deconstructing and reconstructing windmills! :)
Isn't the pressure of water controllable by making it flow between diagonals? I suspect that the wet meeting hall is due to how much water is trying to get pumped through the area all at once...
Fantastic again Krugg, I particularly like the start of your videos. The quality of the sound design and show don't tell really work well. Love your work.

So for me, the cavern dwellers are a huge FPS drain. I think since they are hidden it really strains the calculations that are going on, plus the numbers of them can get huge. You can turn off the cavern invasions in the settings and you can always re-enable them later!
Also, I believe they are working on a build that will utilize more CPU power. Because the core program is so old, it's only utilizing 1 thread from the CPU. If they can get that resolved, the whole slow-down thing will hopefully become a thing of the past. Or at the very least, will greatly extend the length of time you can run any one fortress before it bogs down too much.
Also that flood of the a meeting hall cracked me up and I was getting some Honeystocker flashbacks where you did actually flood your meeting hall and then the entrance hall to your fortress.
I also like the fact that the Honor-wounded was the one who manned the ballista, crack shot and just a case of why a retired soldier is still capable of kicking butt when push comes to shove. Given the effectiveness of that ballista maybe setting up a few more manned by honor-wounded would actually be nice to have in case of a return of the Elves or the Goblins. Maybe a catapult too?
I thoroughly enjoy your content. Your artwork is great as well. I also appreciate the behind the scenes at the end of the episode. I just found your channel subscribed and i’m looking forward to watching the rest of the mischief.
Your art and editing has evolved so much. I used to enjoy shows like Cover to Cover where the story was drawn while read and the old marvel cartoon which was nothing more than cut outs on screen. You have achieved something that is similar in spirit, but much more effective when it comes to story telling. Thanks.
Completely feel you on the slowdown of larger forts lol. I'm currently building up a fort that's essentially carved into 3 cavern layers. It's very cool, but also huge and takes forever to traverse. I've tried adding extra bedrooms and barracks for every level, but it definitely takes time and I've since stopped expanding it and digging deeper for now and have been filling out the massive expanse of space that I have. It does look really cool though.
Early Comment: The chill dwarf casually carrying a bigass ballista bolt to _HARROW_ through their lines is probably the coolest expressions of power. Business as usual.
You should really try a 1x1 embark. If you never tried it before, it almost completely change how you make a fortress, the biggest change being you have no time to react to ambushes and sieges, since the border is so close to you that you HAVE to take care of defenses before you need them. And the cave can be an endless slaughter, since new things pop up when the last thing dies, and your soldiers tend to always be in reach of the new thing. It's fun and can get FUN real quick, and i'm curious where it would end up as a Krugg vid.
For the next series you should set a challenge to build a fort in the ocean by using an obsidian generator to make a pipe down to the ocean floor. Always wanted to do that, but I don't have the technical capacity to do that lol. The short fort you did on the water that froze over during the winters was my favorite series thus far. Island forts in waters that don't freeze would be sick.
So a few years ago a found your channel purely by accident. I watched maybe half a dozen videos and somewhere in there I subscribed. Fast forward to Ep 1 of this series. I'm engrossed in this story. I have dreams about what did or did not happen. Pure unadulterated obsession. Thanks for that. I hope this goes on for way longer than you intended.
When dealing with water and particularly mist generators, it helps me when I find a cavern layer with a water runoff on the edge of the map. An aqueduct or two leading to the drainage is a must! While grates are relatively cheap. Make them out of expensive materials to boost moods and it looks like if you square off the drains you have in the meeting hall should catch overflow.
Thank you for another wonderful episode. I look forward to each and every one. You put an amount of effort into the storytelling that I don't see anywhere else. Thank you again for your hard work.
A working siege weapon was a big surprise! The siege operator managed to fire the thing and it plowed through a bunch of elfs. Maybe it was the position above that made it work, gotta work that siege weapon in peace at a safe range. Sometimes the siege operator sees an enemy hoard coming and abandons the engine. These things have a huge range compared to crossbows. A couple of these things, and a group of operators so it doesn't rely on a single dwarf, would be the next step. Dwarf beard growth tracking is one reason this game makes me happy. I know different dwarf civilizations will have slight variations of traits and styles, but not that it would include beard styles. All DF players have a... Complicated relation with dwarf nobles and their strange demands. At least the dwarfs are being chained up and now sentenced to a beating. That can eff people up, depending on what the captain decides to beat them with. And at least the trouble-makers are put out of the way instead of bothering peaceful dwarfs.
I wish there was the guildmaster position (and possibly the other position that exist in world gen guilds) as you described. The manager/ work-order system works fine and probably doesn't need to be made more complicated, but for flavour it would be nice if guilds handle work-orders instead. Oh and great vid as always Krug!
Looking forward to seeing that mist-generator-cistern-thingymajig work out eventually! That's the kind of thing I would totally try to build, and have a total nightmare to "debug".
A giant monster made out of vomit seems less ridiculous once you realize that the playable civilization in Dwarf Fortress world is, to the man, deeply alcoholic. Honestly I'm surprised that there aren't *more* of those things.
Appreciate all your hard work , I love keeping up with all your dwarves. Would love more narrative and role play but this fort is so fun and exciting 😄 the frog men army
Avuz whistling nonchalantly along before unleashing the whistling death of the ballista? Savage! Another great episode - the Frog dudes are doing me a concern these days! I wonder if the water woes are connected to the location of the final cistern - is it above the level of the meeting hall? If so, the water might always back out of the 'pipes' into the hall unless those gaps are sealed. I noticed the thing about beards, too when I started recording my DF play and paying more attention to the details of each individual dwarf. I'd put it down to differences between OG DF and Steam DF, but that's the best I got - no idea why that would be so. Thanks for all the work you put into these episodes!
Great episode. I looove that drawing of the merchants disappearing off into the caverns. Is it possible to get something like that digitally to use as a wallpaper or something? :)

Looking forward to seeing that mist-generator-cistern-thingymajig work out eventually! That's the kind of thing I would totally try to build, and have a total nightmare to "debug".
Loving this series. Keep up the good work!
More ballistas! one ballista for each row! You're doing great work keep it up :)
A giant monster made out of vomit seems less ridiculous once you realize that the playable civilization in Dwarf Fortress world is, to the man, deeply alcoholic. Honestly I'm surprised that there aren't *more* of those things.
There are, they were just being brutalized by the frogmen because they had the same spawn point.
Awesome!! What a treat to come home to after a tough day! Love your work ~
0:21 Miguel?
I certainly did enjoy my time. Thank you for the episode. :)
That ballista bolt completely wrecked that elf...and all of the other things in its path as well.
i both do and don’t want to find out what monstrosity was powerful enough that they puked up a whole other monster. vomit gotta come from somewhere…
Great episode. I looove that drawing of the merchants disappearing off into the caverns. Is it possible to get something like that digitally to use as a wallpaper or something? :)
Great battle sequence at the beginning of the episode! Cheers, Ivan :D
