The agitated animals thing was toned down primarily because fishing used to send the variable that tells animals how angry to be at you into the stratosphere, leading to people embarking and getting overrun by agitated giant elephants immediately. THAT was patched out. Fishing and cutting down trees still get nature angry at you, but the heat dies down with time, so if you cut down a few trees at embark, wait a while, then cut down a couple more later you ought to be safe. From agitated versions of animals, at least. In Dwarf Fortress you're never 100% safe.
Krugg, you ARE an actual animator! All of your intros, even the simplest ones, always have charm and charisma, and a wonderful sense of movement. Not only that, but they're incredibly dwarvish! I love every single one, and this one was no exception. To this day I can still picture the Short Forts intro. The volcano, the dragon, the sea fortress collapsing... You are a lot more skilled than you give yourself credit for :D
"Pop keeps coming to the meeting hall and desperately trying to socialize, but everyone's working, so it's not like they can just stop and hang out." Man, I feel this so hard.
As a professional animator: Your pixel art animations are wonderful, flowy, and honoustly if you told me you were a professional animator showing me that, I wouldn't bat an eye. Well done! And lovely!
You do such a good job of foreshadowing. I was on the edge of my seat when you cracked open that last cluster and genuinely concerned for Tinny's life. You have a way of telling the story that makes me so invested in the characters. Love your work.
I really love the reductive-carving method of fort building, with big open spaces full of natural smooth stone buildings underground. I've used it in a couple of my forts and it just _feels_ like the dwarfiest way to make a fort. Much cooler than just having a bunch of tunnels and rooms in a mountain, it feels like it puts all your dwarven engineering out on display where the elves have to look at it when they come to trade.
If the elves are coming, don't forget to make a wooden paved way to the wooden blocks trade depot. And of course, use wooden bins to bring your goods in... What? They're not being traded. No reason for turmoil at all. It's just a nice contrast with the stone worked walls.
"How much these videos mean to some people" It has been three years. I am still thinking about Scorch Fountain. And Moldath. That Moldath. That freaking dance. THREE YEARS! I still love it. Need to rewatch that series.
The intros are so worth it Kruggsy, the scortchfountain and honeystoker intros had such a profound impact. I felt like I was tuning in for a proper show, rather than a TH-cam “let’s play”. Kudos to you my man.
@@arthurbarros5189 YES DUDE! That’s exactly what I’m talking about! Then is there a more iconic fort that scortchfountain and their beardless baron? My goodness what great tales, and this one is shaping up to be of equal calibre
@@SkroomJuice somehow, Northbridge impacted me more than Scorchfountain. Maybe because I was already loving to deal with volcanoes and necromancy... northbridge is making me want to do Huge Outside Structures, bigger than the stupid shoeboxes I usually encase my wagons in. Actual castles with towers, rooms with clear glass windows pointing to protected gardens or any beautiful scenery I have. I still only make customized rooms for my favorite dwarves, but someday I will do an incredible fort with rooms for everyone as they like it. Maybe when I redo my magma-in-ocean-obsidian castle in steam version.
its this and the style, colours, and presentation that genuinely sets this channel apart from a lot of things on TH-cam. Both Krug and his wife do amazing work. I mean it wholeheartedly that the channel is a work of art
"Hey titan", sais the grasshopper " I kinda got an itchy spot on my back, I can't reach. You gonna help out a fellow swamp dweller?" "Hold still" sais the titan.
I remember when I first found those clusters. I was building my fortress within 10 Z's of the magma sea, and while digging out the tavern I found everything all at once. The place flooded, dwarves melted, and some funny 🤡 mutants wrecked shop. Just like here. But less bloodshed. I was afraid when you mined into the caves, cavern dwellers are... Awfully numerous. And serpent men too. They usually have sturdy metal weapons including steel. Must of salvaged it from another fort. Who knows? 😉 Anyway, been enjoying your videos for a while and just wanted to pipe up for once. Tired of being shy. Well, keep on trucking YOU magnificent bastard.
I'm really glad you're back to making these edited videos again. I once heard you comment how there doesn't seem to be any other story drive DF TH-camrs and I suspect it's because none have them have the unique combination of skills you bring to the table. Your artistic talent combined with the patience required to do all that reading to get know the dwarves so personally and your story telling ability help you introduce the dwarves to us in ways that no other channel can and that all really brings your fortresses to life.
I found myself holding my breath when she broke into that pillar and uncovered the final secret. I wasn't sure what was going to happen and was worried for her life! Which is just another way of saying, great storytelling, man.
I'm gonna say I really love how he's doing this series of fortress all in the same world. It's neat that Northbridge still spans the river and Nokortarad is still hanging in the north. I can't wait until adventure mode is finally released and we can actually walk through these locations again as part of the living world, crossing the actual north bridge on the way to Spear Cavern and Nokortoard
The Snakemen had a legend of a great evil sealed away by their ancestors using fire and water. They all knew from a young age to never touch the shiny stones set into the walls. Then one day a new race entered the caverns, and they did not know the legends...
A little advice to avoid letting any more clowns into your fortresses from those gem clusters, you can carve a fortification into the wall to peek through. If you find nothing then you can mine through as normal, if you find something dangerous you can avoid or kill it with crossbows. My first steam fortress was destroyed by a tarantula shaped thing made of fire, and I’ve been doing this strategy every time from then on.
That whole escape scene with Tinny and the Demon was so well done! The lack of commentary, the sounds of running, the jump scare when it reappeared! I stopped what I was doing and was just glued to the screen!
A wee tip i doscovered is that with those gem clusters you can smoothe the walls and then carve a firtification into it, meaning you can see whats inside.
How savage biomes work is that agitated animals will spawn the more trees you chop. Agitated animals will basically attack the first thing that isn't one of them, including other wild animals.
I love that opening. Really lively and expressive. A masterwork of craftdwarfship. I'm also fond of the characters Spearcavern has provided so far, looking forward to seeing their triumph and/or tribulations further!
It's kind of difficult to describe, but the calming narration and nice intro animation kind of feel like coming home and being able to relax, thanks for the great videos!

That intro animation made me smile. It's one of those little touches that make your videos so... you. I think having taken an extended break from viewing your videos has allowed me to really appreciate how much you have improved.
That intro was smooth as purring maggot butter! Gold star, easily one of the best. Also actually jumped during that "jump scare", haha. It's episode 2 and I'm thinking this is going to be an amazing series.
Kruggsmash videos always menace with spikes of Platinum and Diamond Cabochons. The images adorning the videos are of superior quality. The dwarf (Retro Overdose) has fainted from the sight.
I love the subtle foreshadowing of the potential drama between Pop and Queen Bee through the other dwarves thoughts and of course the thoughts of Queen Bee and Pop themselves. I have no idea if it'll happen or not, but I'm sort of expecting them to be at each other's throats eventually.
That intro is the best in Krugg history! Absolutely loved it. Sound design get's better every day, too. The atmopshere of these is top notch! You are in a league of your own, no doubt.

The horse demon jumpscare was great. I just imagine it buring out while dashing with grace. Except its on two legs instead of four.
