    I just built a massive stoneware bridge spanning two continents, so this is exciting to see since you got me into the game and that was my first project fort. I'm very proud of my bridge, it's made of stoneware from fireclay, is about as long as the 6x6 embark size, is wide enough for two wagons to pass each other, has fortifications on the side for aesthetics, and has a tavern suspended above it on one of the ends. The mayor died just before completion, so I made the last tile of the bridge out of gold and engraved an image of him laughing and laboring with the dwarves. I'm hoping to cross the bridge in adventure mode

    "What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal" ~Nietzche
    A recent discovery is that the top source of lag in DF is NOT caused by pathing, but by the Dwarves checking their relationships to everybody around them to decide how to act. The dwarves are constantly in a state of thinking about the other people around them and deciding how they ought to act in that particular social interaction.
    So yeah, the stories that happen during each game of DF might not matter much to the player, but they are the most important thing in each individual dwarves' lives.
    Hopefully those trolls won't be too much of a problem. I hear they have a strange fascination for living beneath bridges.
    Love that you are doing a bridge megaproject this is going to be something special!

      I think thats what makes DF special though. A lot of games would neuter the AI's interactions like this to keep performance up for the player. But DF sticks to its guns and honestly what would Dwarf Fortress be without the bizarre, emotionally intelligent dwarfs?

    • @timothypollard6008
      @timothypollard6008 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Really love the idea of the ENTIRE fortress (minus mines and logging infrastructure) being on the bridge. Reminds me of the Bridge of Volantis from Game of Thrones, or the various real world bridges that inspire it. maybe you expand the bridge to add the buildings, but realistically, the growth of the buildings would constrict the road to it's limit (3 spaces for a wagon), which would be thematically appropriate! Build everything in a shell around, over, and even under the bridge. The platinum door should be the door to the Mayor/baron/kings domicile, right in the center of the bridge, where, of course, the platinum bell will be displayed above the bridge.

I have to remember that it's a story telling game, the win-condition is something interesting happening; it's having a neat story. I keep forgetting when I'm in the thick of forgotten beasts and goblin sieges, getting frustrated at my populations being decimated but that's the story. It's be boring without any conflict. When you start a new game, to prevent a steam update from breaking everything, make a copy of the current game and just save it somewhere. If steam ever updates, you can just copy the old game file back in and it will run fine until the next update. Hope this helps.

    I hope you continue this world for a long time, I love seeing a world's history span over multiple series!

    I am 2:10 second in and this is already one of your best videos, the quality and care put into it it unmatched! (holding the Redvault / Longnight videos which I think are solidly your best content)

    Hmmm watched the Vid a second time and..... maybe those bells could be a nice way to defeat careless enemys? Like 'Bells of Justice' coming from above the enemys to crush them in the name of the Fort ^^

    I found a very prime bit of real estate in my latest world; a small ocean-washed land bridge leading to a continent inhabited soley by elves. I plan to emulate Northbridge and am rewatching this series for some tips 😀 love your videos as always!
