People have seen my collection of animation bluray and DVD. Looney Tunes. Hanna Barbara, Tom & Jerry, Ren and Stimpy, Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam (AKA Fearless freep 😂). You get the idea. They think I'm childish and should grow up. When explain how I enjoy the artwork, the scripts and the making of documentaries from the 30's to the present they just have this "Are you serious" look on their faces and grin. My collection is numbered.. 01 to 725 at the moment so I am able to watch them numerically. Up to press I can get round to watching all the movies over 3 years. I have a special shelf where I keep certain favorite movies which I will watch many times because I can't wait 3 years to see them again.
I'm in my 30s and collect lots of animation too. Not all animation is for kids and even so I like having the film that were important to me growing up in the 90s, they give me a good feeling, don't let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying the things you enjoy. They're not you, if they don't get it, they don't get it. Animation has tons of artistry to appreciate no matter what age we are.
One thing I do as a collector is just spending hours on end doing market research. Are there any sales happening? What movies are currently on offer in my favorite second hand stores? How much does that movie set I've been eyeing cost this week? Is today finally the day I imvest in a 4k TV? I spend hours researching and then often don't even buy anything but it's still so fun!!
To save money I'm always buying used. That started 20 years ago when GameStop was selling used DVD's. They would put those price stickers on the front and back of the cases and so I became an expert at removing them. Some might say Goo Gone is the best method, but I disagree. It takes a feather touch and lots of patience to remove those stickers. Goo Gone takes too much pressure to rub the sticky stuff off and can damage the insert and/or case. You can peel the stickers off and then use the remaining adhesive to remove whatever is left on the case by dabbing the sticker over the adhesive. It takes time but is quit satisfying. Yes, you could just buy replacement cases but like I said, SAVE MONEY. More money means more DVD's.
Every collector ticks a little differently than others, not only that I like to sort my film collection alphabetically and recently I like to have the Bluray disc from the same Movie together in the DVD case. I get extra empty cases where two discs fit in. I do that firstly because I I prefer the original cover art more for nostalgic reasons and secondly I would like to have both formats in the collection to save ;-)
I Rarely buy blu rays and dvd's now. I see it like this, every year there are 100's of new movies and shows, I have something always new to watch, so I don't have the time to re-watch anything lol. so I will buy the ones I want to watch forever cos I love too much, plus we only live once so I don't wanna waste time watching the same stuff all the time. Life is too small and amazing
I don't have much space, but I created about 5 free floating shelves with the support brackets connected to the studs in the wall. There's 5 of them on 1 wall, and arranged in a star formation. At the top I have my tweeterhead catwoman, and the shelf to the left with the collector's bluray steelboxes, I arranged them in a pyramid formation with them being higher in the middle, and slope downward to the sides. The shelf to the right I put my folio society books in the same pyramid formation with Lord of the Rings Folio Society Limited Edition in the center, and other books sloping downward to the sides. On my other wall, I have 3 self-made shelves made of red oak (stained black) with support brackets on the sides connected to the studs, and acting as book ends holding all my N64, SNES, NES games cased in plastic cases (custom game cases).
With my collection ,I organise by buying DVD and BRD cases that are 7mill,and by doing that I can pack in almost twice the discs into such a space--I use an office guillotine to trim the folder covers!
I started listening to a few collector channels recently, and I've been wondering a lot about the term "physical media collecting" and how it's used. I mean, mostly these channels collect movies and/or TV series, so it's not like the collection usually consists a variety of different physical media, such as books, music records or... comic books? And even if they collected all of those, they probably wouldn't consider them a singular "physical media collection". Even in this video you separate "book collectors" and "physical media collectors", which felt very wonky 😄

I keep my Blu Ray''s and 4K's seperate and have them in A-Z
I find it easier that way for finding what movie I want to watch
my collection of blu rays and dvds is like under 50 all mixed up on the shelf.
It takes me less then 10 seconds to find anything lmao

I mix in rewatches with new watches year round. I try new things on streaming and in theaters, and also blind buy some discs of films I've never seen.
Media collectors are sort of viewed on by people, like fetishists are, people sort of,look down, and edge away

I've noticed this too!! But I've kinda adapted to it now, my books are my book collection and my movies are the physical media collection
Most of my collection is in boxes now days due to space and lack of space
I let kodi do this for me
