The FR-F1 was adopted in 1967 as the French Army's marksman or sniper's rifle. It was based roughly on the MAS-36 bolt action system, but with a heavier receiver and 10-round detachable box magazine. It used the same scope as he MAS 49-56; the APX L806, a 3.85x optic largely modeled after the German ZF-4. I'm doing some shooting today with PPU 7.5mm ammunition, which is not particularly good - and the results show that. So, I after filming this video I shipped the rifle to my friends at 9 Hole Reviews for a proper test. Check out their video:

Perhaps I should have schlepped Ian's ridiculously rare rifle around like I would an SMLE in a "Northern maple brother's" hands, but we have been asked to keep all remaining custom loaded cartridges... for science :) .
Subsequently we are returning the rifle with only two 5-shot groupings on paper, one of which was the sight in, the other was the record. This is one only rifle we've produced good content with and only expended less than 50 rounds in total.
    Au pas camarade!

For those who want to know :
GIGN sent 9 members : 6 shooters, their leader, a radio and the lieutenant.
4 terrorists where in the bus. They asked for food for the kids. The meals were dosed with sleeping pills to help shooters tell an awoken terrorist from a asleep kid. 6 shots fired in less than a second (the standard timing they were trained on to make sure no one would have the time to react). A fifth terrorist was hidden inside the bus (probably sleeping out of sight, maybe he ate some of the kids meal :D ) and ran away but was killed by a second round from one of the shooters.
Somalian army opened fire onto the french troops with MG42's. GIGN members then ran to the bus (some 200m away) to free the kids. They came across a 6th terrorist who took advantage of the firefight to get back to the bus. He fired at the GIGN members and missed, then fired at the kids, killing a girl, fatally wounding an other girl (she died in hospital, back in France) before getting shot by the GIGN returning fire.
    Results and aftermath :
7 terrorists were killed. Probably 15-ish Somalian soldiers, too.
2 young girls died. The bus driver, the social worker and 5 kids were injured, some even badly and were handicaped for life.
A Foreign Legion Lieutenant was badly injured.
1 kid got abducted and detained in Somalia, but was liberated after negociations. 1 kid took his/her own life later on.
Soldiers and GIGN members kept a bitter sweet taste of victory :/

    - every sniper confirms they have acquired his own target
    - commanding officer counts down to zero

    - when zero is reached, everyone fires
I was told getting the shot can take hours

After the Djibouti Incident of 1976, the FR-F1 rifle saw action during the battle of Kolwezi in 1978. Snipers of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (French Foreign Legion) used this rifle against Congolese rebels. Regular French riflemen were issued Mas 49/56 rifles and MAT 49 SMG, the Congolese rebels were issued modern assault rifles like FN FAL, AK rifles, and M16A1. After the battle, some of these weapons were retrieved by the 1st Marine Infantry Paratrooper Regiment, the French equivalent of the British SAS, possibly for covert operations.

Yes the French have lost a few big wars, but if folk look back at history they see that they've probably fought more than anyone else and in general did better than most. FRF1's role in the French army was DMR, there was one in each 10 men basic infantry squad. GIGN used different scopes and selected rifles. On competition rifles (without optics) the tension of the flash hider was adjusted (in the arsenal) for match ammo. For DMR rifles, it was not considered as necessary, in case of war, whatever ammo was available would have to do. FRF1s were also used with good effects in the Kolvzei rescue operation by Foreign Legion paratroopers

It's amazing how much wood can class up a rifle. The bipod is also particularly nice.

@Paul Alexander It's in the middle to allow for greater elevation before the butt hits the ground. For example, shooting through plane windows from the tarmac. The way it's mounted also doesn't damp barrel harmonics, or allow for POI shift under loading. Additionally, each leg has a hand adjustable length from the firing position, for levelling.

superb rifle that I was lucky enough to have in my hands during my first three years in the army then I went to the FR-F2 with a devilish precission for ten years then to the PMG HECATE II during my two last years of the army.
each of these three rifles are formidably precise but I still keep a preference on the FR-F2
    great video

I find your bias to be very objective, straight forward "I'm biased" but you clearly know when the french outright made big mistakes.
But seeing the 9 hole review and that ought to make you happy :)

I have been fairly happy with Prizi Par ammo, and very happy with Sellier and Benoit in both 6.5 Swedish Mauser and 7X57. In particular the price point of PP's 375 H&H was basically like getting loaded ammo for the cost of the brass alone, though I am just shooting it up informally because I bought 275 grain Grand Slams for reloading for elk hunting.. I am waiting for a shipment of 500 rounds of S&B .308 for my new DPMS from my favorite AZ company J&G. I would say I have shot about 2000 rounds of the Euro ammo in the last decade and it has been a very good experience.

Agreed, I have found PPU ammo to be quite consistent. A bit dirty with lots of black fouling, but consistent.

Hi from France, these rifle were made in few numbers and are rares . For PPU ammos, watch for concentricity . PPU improved a bit its quality level a few years ago .

  • @pcman312

Hey Ian, a recommendation for adjusting your scope: don't do small clicks like you did with your windage. Sometimes the springs can stick in the scope and 1-2 clicks sometimes don't actually move your zero. Instead do +4 clicks followed by -3 clicks (or some equivalent). That helps prevent this issue.
