Long both NIO and TSLA, I had my heart set on a Tesla Y or X, but after test-driving the EC6 and ES8, I've since been struggling with the decision. The ride itself and the passenger experience in the NIO surprised me. What is still holding me back from ordering a NIO is a) I want to know more about their car safety ratings and b) I don't know whether or not to buy the car with a battery or without since it's unclear how the resale market will respond to cars without batteries. For reference, a ES8 with all options reviewed in this video sells for a bit over 600k RMB right now in China, whereas one without a battery would cost 480k.
Totally agree with you there, I am having the same struggle. Though if anything I would get a NIO without a battery, especially since better batteries for NIO are coming. Right now the only thing Tesla still has going for it is future autonomy, but is that enough to justify the higher price and live without the amazing services NIO comes with?
@@cleantechnica You are right about the battery. Even with a 100kWh battery, the NIO gets less mileage than a Tesla, noticeably, at the moment. Regarding price, if comparing prices in China, Tesla is actually the cheaper car by quite a lot. After subsidies, you can get the base Tesla Y for 276k RMB. None of the three models NIO makes comes close unless you buy the car only (without the battery). To lease the battery, it's 1500 RMB/month, which is great for drivers that get in a lot of mileage, but for users that don't drive long distances, it's not a cheap solution.
Hmmm yes, you make a good point. I underestimated the price at which Tesla can produce vehicles locally. In Europe its a different story. Shipping without a battery is also very useful from a tax perspective.
Tesla doesn't pass the German TÜV safety tests, but Nio does. If you think safety the choice is really just one of them. Nicely, and against my previous prejudices, Chinese Nio, BYD, XPeng and MG are all scoring wonderfully within European safety tests.
Fifth Gear just posted a video testing this car in Norway and they showed the actual battery swap, the Fifth Gear hosts were stunned for words at how efficient and automated it is. We already have ET7 on the road here and they are stunning.

Maybe average Tesla charging speed is 108kw, but important for travelling is the speed in the lower area/SoC (10-60%) ...and here the average is about 150kw ! (and starts with 250kw). So only 10 - 15 min. and u can go on (because u already have enough range and dont need to charge over 60% (and there are SuCs everywhere). And that's a big difference / advantage over slower charging speeds (in this lower SoC) ! And yes, most people dont travel that often, but if u travel it really matters. BUT overall it's a good thing too ...to know if there is a spontaneous trip, just charge 10 min. and ready to go ! PS. I think swapping wont last that long as it is unnecessary (with this high and overall rising charging speeds (and good ranges).
Yup you make a good point and I think the chart reflects most of what you are saying. However I don't think charging wil improve significantly behind what the Taycan has anytime soon. Personally I don't mind supercharging either and hardly roadtrip, but having a battery that will never degrade and range that will improve over the years is alluring. I will do a complete deep drive on it some day.
Do you know if this was the signatur edition ? (Circular silver emblem on doorpost) .. I’m hoping not since there are 7 or 12 speaker versions. You weren’t too happy, so I cross my fingers that you only had the 7 speaker version 😬
Yes this was also a discussion I had with NIO. They also found my remark regarding audio strange since it should have been a 12 speaker car that I was in. However, back then they did not yet have the signature edition emblem. We were planning on re-testing it this time but we didn't get around to it. But what I figure is you can always go to a garage and try to switch out the speakers, add a pieve if hardware to adjust EQ. I might have an answer for you a month from now. Will try to publish it as part of a new NIO article/video.
@@cleantechnica sounds awesome! I am flying to Oslo myself about a week from now; sole purpose is seeing the car, driving it and deciding on color and trim .. seems to me that this might be our next family car 🤩
I look forward to hearing your opinion. Also just a thought, if you are concerned about Media in the car, consider this, the secure storage between the first two seats can easily hold and charge tablets for the whole family (nowadays a 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A is like $200 or less when bought at the right time). Mount it and enjoy the car's wifi Hotspot, that way you are not dependant on the automaker for new entertainment software and the hardware doesn't get a outdated. If you have the cash you can even buy 12 inch tablets.
As an engineer at a lithium battery company, if I would buy a EV I would choose NIO cuz car battery are really not that durable in long term. They do not break easily but degrade. I don't think Tesla is using any top-secret formula to improve it. We shall see what happens to older Tesla in just 2-3 years. I would say traditional EVs are making cars into iPhones which need more renewal than non-smart ones.
Nice video. I can argue that you can also spray the fragrant yourself if you need to, though. You don't need the car to do it for you. But I guess I'm just low tech lol.
I also have some hope that this fragrance is not that strong. Most importantly it's not always on, which is the problem with all other car fragrances, even when it's off it gives off a smell (even if it is a wekaer one). Also for the people that do like it, it's easy to change smells so hopefully the car itself won't start smelling so quickly like so many taxis do. Manually switching between 3 air fresheners while driving is not actually possible.
This ES8 came out in 2019 in China, so its got a few years of production under its belt… will there be a mid cycle refresh coming soon? Or will this platform keep going like Tesla did with the Model S?
@@cleantechnica thank you for asking them. I’m speaking on behalf of all the sad Canadians who cannot buy this and are still holding on to the slim chance they will come here 😢

No, you're wrong. 90 kW charging is not good. The function of a vehicle is to provide transport. Not to make its owners sit around for hours at charging stations. Compared to the current market leaders Audi/Porsche/VAG and the Hyundai/Kia group 90 kW is lack lustre. You can guarantee that battery swap stations will be few and far between, particularly in rural areas. So being able to charge up fast where you can is a necessity, particularly with a large SUV like this - which is going to soak up electrons when it has a full compliment of passengers and luggage, it's snowing and you're ascending into the mountains. To shift people from fossil burners the 10-80% in 18 minutes that the Ioniq 5 and EV6 are offering is a much more viable proposition. Otherwise - a great review, thank you.
Well then good news, since through a software update they increased it to 120kW. Also what I suspected when I made the video was correct 90 kW was not just the peak rate but could be sustained throughoit basically the entire charge cycle, it's rare to have a power curve that good. (Tesla on average is at 108 kW) so 20-80% or 0-80% takes 30 minutes. However the new charge time with 120 kW is still unknown (I'm working on getting that from NIO)
@@cleantechnica Thanks for the update. It's an improvement. But if we are to ease the transition to EVs and reach some of the deadlines set for this, charging speeds need to go right up. If every petrol / gas pump was replaced with a charger and every fossil fuel car with an EV, there'd be gridlock. Every extra minute a car spends at a charge point is charging time denied to other vehicles.
You do realize that you can swap the battery in 3-5 minutes right? They plan to have a complete network in Europe by 2025, and a year after they launch in a market. You can even get a 150 kWh battery in 2023 with even faster charging. The car is not limited.
@@cleantechnica Look at Nio's charge network in China. It's based around major cities. And for people like taxi firms that's brilliant. Look at companies like Tesla in countries like Portugal, or Wales - again the Supercharger network is based around major cities and has massive rural gaps. Being able to charge up at any charge point at the maximum available speed is going to be key. I think the 150 kW battery with even faster charging would be the way to go with this (unless you're running it as something like an airport shuttle). It's big beast. It's had positive reviews for its charge curve: which I'd expect from Nio. They are well up on that game. Thanks for tha additional feedback.
Regarding the no start button. What do you do when leaving your teenager in the car while shopping and you just want the infotainment running and maybe the heater? I personally like to be able to control exactly what is turned on and when.
If the key is not present, the car won't shift into drive or reverse, but so long as there is someone in the car or the vehicle is unlocked, the screen stays on. Also besides for some strange reason leaving the key inside, this teenager would have to be sitting in the drivers seat for some reason and be pressing the break pedal and then shifting.
When you say Hi Nomi it will look at the person that said it. If you ask it to turn on seat massage for example, it will know for which seat to do it for. Whether windows or seat heating works for the second row I am not certain, didn't try that.
There is a mic on top of every seat, so Nomi recognizes which person is giving the command, for e.g, u say lower the window 25%, Nomi will only lower window by u.

Now, that's what I'm talking about😊👍💪
Ooh... my gosh! I know NEO is beautiful but with this review, it explained more details! Thank you, really appreciate!
So proud to invest in NEO Company and would love to have NEO ES8 SUV! So impressive!
u watched too much matrix
Awesome first impressions.
The best thing about NIO is its services. Buy services get a car for free.
Typing up a whole article about NIO service right now
Come to America NIO , I'm not far away from being a Nio-Linaire
So punny 😀
There’s a very interesting Turkish electric SUV hitting the market in 2022 called Togg which looks absolutely stunning and with a 4.8 second to 100kmh with 4 passengers and an awesome range and interior, we would appreciate a review of it.
Togg is state funded and will almost exclusively be for Turkey tho
My first electric car will be NIO only.
Can't afford NIO so I would like to have one Xpeng
me too to replace my volov
@@markplott4820 only if you think Tesla will be the only EV brand by 2023, otherwise nio will be one the last brand to be dead, at least after BBA
@@markplott4820 because Tesla is the only EV car out there huh? 😂 bobo.
If anything Tesla isn’t going to be shit once these other companies bring their EV’s out.
@@markplott4820 2023? If that’s Teslas official release date, then expect 2025-2026. Besides, what make you think that Nio doesn’t have something similar planned?
Great video, can't wait to see these in Canada :)
@Smack Dragon loll
this needs to come to Canada
I love the simpicity of the interior, as opposed to the horrible screen overload like in that new Mercedes EQS/EQE duo.
@@markplott4820 yikes dude imagine thinking Tesla is the best car brand in the world🤡
Well said Devan
@@devan271 Well, in terms of having more charging stations than Electrify America or American stations (forgot the name but its California's version of tesla) indeed it actually is very much better than any current Gas to Ev companies. That person isn't a clown, just logically correct.
I have been waiting Nio to start selling its cars in the USA
I hope there will be dealers in Sweden...even Norway is not far
Do you plan to attend the NIo House opening in OSLO.23rd Would be nice to get video of the NIO HOUSE
It's possible, decision on this has not yet been made, but if people are interested then maybe.
can't wait to get one in the US
Nice review!
Wooow the seats are ffff awesome
Beautiful car inside and out! $NIO
I'll try one when they have battery swaps in Portugal...

So the question is when does US going to have Nio? Cause I ain’t going to buy Tesla
Great question. Can't wait
@@onetwothreefour-s1n exactly!!! Europe gone first. And I saw it was in English. I’m like seriously? Not in the US?!!!!!
@@rohshelly340 yeah. Bummer. Probably years away. The last 3 presidents have been anti china so I'm not holding my breath. Maybe the next guy won't be another 80 year old like the last 2. 🤔
@@onetwothreefour-s1n OH CRAP!!!!😫😪 the only thing I like Nio is swapping batteries. For only 3 mins. Less time than Tesla. And you can make a choice of either buy the batter or rent the battery yet the car still cheap to buy with out the battery. Oh one more NOMI!!!! That’s another thing
It's possible that NIO has not yet made a final decision on that (need to double check). You see they plan to study the launch in Norway to plan the rest of the European expansion, this might also have a bearing on the US. However Germany is getting either the ET7 or ES6 in 2022.
I believe that this car can be a Tesla ''killer'' Great work has been done
and BYD is a Tesla killer either according to the South American.
Wow! China congratulations on a very desirable vehicle!
I have decided to wait till 2025 to buy my first EV because I believe EV prices will come down dramatically over the next 3 to 5 years. I have interested heavily into NIO and Tesla as I believe they will both be leaders in this change in the auto sector. Planning on selling a small portion of my investment to either buy a Nio or a Tesla. Enjoyed your review on one of Nios vehicles I really think Nio has a compelling product that will sell well Globally.
Plus another one BYD
Nio please come to the US.
The forward for R and back for D is probably so drivers don't have to relearn their habits.
I can’t wait to buy one 🎁🎁
NIO is great
Hopefully to USA soon
All of America brands were all over China since 1990s
It is just sosososo good!
when will it be available in. de rest of the EU , Belgium ???
Really hoping NIO comes to the UK
NIO is the futur !!!! ;)
I love NIO
Start the ES6 in Germany. The ES8 is too big. Waiting for it...
Love it🥰❤️
Do you know if this was the signatur edition ?
I am flying to
Oslo myself about a week from now; sole purpose is seeing the car, driving it and deciding on color and trim .. seems to me that this might be our next family car 🤩
If you have the cash you can even buy 12 inch tablets.
great
More range is what people need. We don’t want to keep charging the car every 4 days.
I will be the first millionaire on Nio stocks 😎🤝
Its nice like it
This ES8 came out in 2019 in China, so its got a few years of production under its belt… will there be a mid cycle refresh coming soon? Or will this platform keep going like Tesla did with the Model S?
That is a very good question, but for now we don't have an answer to that, but I will try to ask them that.
i think right now they focus on nio et7. They also have es6 i think. But only es8 came to norway.
So we asked, ES8 hardware has been upgraded, next one is currently not planned, so for sure not in the within the next year.
@@cleantechnica thank you for asking them. I’m speaking on behalf of all the sad Canadians who cannot buy this and are still holding on to the slim chance they will come here 😢
It is understood that there are up to 188 product updates for the 2020 es8, including chrome plated trim strips, running water steering lights, Antarctic Xinglan car enterprise color, new 9.8-inch full LCD instrument, 11.3-inch second-generation central control screen, etc.
Really rooting NIO to get huge world wide. Although I don't think it will come to the US.
I'm sure it will come to the US eventually, but for now the issue is production, not demand
any dates for the UK?
I want to buy Nio in the Pacific, when is Nio coming?:(
Seen it not long ago on the road
Nice car!
Very nice car...
Amazing car :)]
Awesommee!! :O
I would like to take a nap !
How does it react if you say Hi NOMI?
Can it open the correct window where the people saying it?
When you say Hi Nomi it will look at the person that said it. If you ask it to turn on seat massage for example, it will know for which seat to do it for. Whether windows or seat heating works for the second row I am not certain, didn't try that.
There is a mic on top of every seat, so Nomi recognizes which person is giving the command, for e.g, u say lower the window 25%, Nomi will only lower window by u.
Australia soon please
Watching from South Africa🇿🇦 and knowing I'll only see Tesla or Nio in Africa by 2030 is quite sad. Though the traditional automakers have a headstart in 3rd world countries so it will be interesting to see how they market to the brics nations.
Great wall might bring ora. They already have gwm and haval there. Fingers crossed for you. I'm in the states so only tesla here also
It might actually be sooner than you think. NIO is actually hosting leaders from Africa for showing so maybe some great news will come put of that.
