  • NIO ES8 and the battery swap station of the future. Vicki and JP test out an all-new SUV that has been launched by Chinese manufacturer NIO. The ES8 is a luxury SUV that should give Tesla something to worry about…especially as it has the very latest battery swap technology which could spell the end of EV range anxiety and long charge times…

    It's now 1 month since I bought the Nio Es8 after selling my Tesla model x. What is very good about the ES8 is comfort and especially driving comfort. Perfect suspension and very little noise both from road and wind. Battery swap is ingenious in that you do not have to think about the condition of the battery and and it is quick to change. But perhaps the most important thing for many of us who have bought the car is that the car is not outdated by later and better generations of batteries. Nio is committed to ensuring that later generations of batteries are compatible with the current version of Nio. It is the constant development of better batteries that reduces the price of used cars, but with this tecno this will be way much better.

      Indeed. There are Model S with dead batteries already. Battery replacement sets you back 20k - which makes a dead Tesla worthless. A 10 year old NIO with BAAS will still have its value since the battery can be swapped any time. Never out of warranty.

    I've got an older version of NIO ES8 in China. The most interesting thing is NIO provide many after market upgrades for the old models. For example, the chipset on my ES8 is very old, it is running slower than the newest chipset. And the cameras on my older ES8 is not very clear. NIO now provides me a chance to upgrade the chipset and all cameras on my old ES8 for about 1300USD.

      The Nomi assistant is a paid optional feature.
      According to NIO, you don't have to wait at all for batteries to be charged.
      There are a total of 13 batteries inside the Gen 2 swap station, and the full charge takes less than one hour.
      If there are less than 13 people in front of you, then you will have a full battery no doubt.
      If there are more than 13 people in line, then the battery swapped out from the first guy's car will be charged in full when it's your turn.
      You can check how many people are in line for battery swaps before you head to the station.

When a rapid charge only takes fifteen minutes (during which you can go for a cup of tea and a wee) there's not enough benefit.

      Batteries swaping will be from the past when you will charge 80% of you battery in 10-15 mn. Also making swapping station infrastructure is veeery expensive, and won´t be possible at scale.

    OMG 😱 that is a potential game changer. I can’t get my head around the battery swap though. I’m guessing that you’re effectively leasing a battery because you could be recharged with a battery that’s, let’s say, not as new and efficient but that you’ll never have to worry about a battery in the lifetime of the vehicle 🤔
    Love the car though and the tech looks amazing 👍👍

    • @Godzzbinzz
      @Godzzbinzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's correct it's a lease service. The initial price of the car is much lower as you don't buy the battery and you then pay a monthly subscription, price depending on what type of battery you want (range, speed etc).

    • @peterklausner9727
      @peterklausner9727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Leasing or owning the battery are both options.. Leasing the battery lowers the initial cost of the vehicle by $10k USD, & the lease agreement is $150/mo for the 75kwh pack.... All NIO owners are entitled to 6 free swaps per month, & NIO maintains the batteries & have already phased out 2 packs.. the 84kwh & 70kwh packs are already being phased out & the 75, 100, & later this year the 150kwh pack will be available..

    • @rammpage4468

      Regarding the battery swap, from what understand, you either choose to buy the battery with the car (~$10k extra), or you buy the car without the battery (~$10k less) then subscribe to Nio's battery swap package and pays ~$150/month.

  • @longbillcn

    NIO's battery swap plan is much better than super charger plans. Here's why. 1. battery swap station needs less power than super charge stations. because battery swap stations contains several batteries which can store energy. thus it does not need to charge the battery when user swap. it can charge them at lower speed or at night. So battery swap station plan will perform less impact on the electric grid, which makes it easier to find a proper place. 2. maybe nobody believes the battery swap station is cheaper than a high voltage super charge station.

    3) what happens if the changed battery is a dud? Ie dead cells
    4) what’s the cost per battery swap?
    5) what happens if the battery swap installation fails? Mechanical breakdown, misalignment etc

    • @yaouyu
      @yaouyu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      1. Yes, you can still charge the car in a charging station.
      2. About 1 hour.
      3. You can swap it back, if anything wrong with battery, the station can detect it and notify NIO to take it out. The system is very advanced.
      4. You get 4-6 free swaps and you pay electricity cost plus service charge. Ask a NIO fellow for detail, it varies based on where you are.
      5. At this moment, there is always an attendant on site to help with questions, in the future you might have to call NIO if anything breakdown.

  • @jessefloyd4835
    @jessefloyd4835 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    THIS is how the ENTIRE automotive industry should be. The dealer experience, the technology, subscription based cars which ENTIRELY remove the worry of battery degradation. They should offer car insurance and bundle the cost of the car loan, cost of the battery as a service, and cost of insurance all in one. This doesn't just speak to the younger generation, this SCREAMS at us. I mean seriously, with this business model, if they run it right (and it looks like they are) then this IS the future.
    Electrical grid stress: eliminated. You can charge the swapped batteries after peak load.
    Range/longevity anxiety: completely eliminated with the BAAS thing
    Pricing: insanely competitive.
    Mark my words, in 10 years, this will be the EV norm. And if it isn't, it should be.

    • @patmanrick
      @patmanrick ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark my words it will not be. To explain why, just do a thought experiment about how this actual works in the real world. How many swap stations you need, how many vehicles can be swapped at a time, how many spare packs you need etc. It might take 5 mins, but if there's a queue of 3 cars then that's actually 20 mins, at which point you might as well have just charged normally. New EVs can add a lot of range in just 15 mins charging from say 10% or less SoC, with time that's likely to improve further and make battery swap even less viable

    • @jessefloyd4835
      @jessefloyd4835 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patmanrick I think you missed a key detail. They still offer normal EV charging. While some people will use the swap stations (say for trips) other's can use the EV charging stations. And plus, with a little bit of software tweaking, you can do mobile queues. Check in on the way, first in line when you get there. Or it can tell you what time to show up given the current queue. All it takes is a little cooperation and a little software.

    • @patmanrick
      @patmanrick ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessefloyd4835 mobile queue still doesn't work for the same reason that physical queues don't. You get a queue because there is insufficient bandwidth to service vehicles that need servicing, that doesn't change if people use an app. The thing with the swap stations is that they're expensive and so you can't have many, so it's not practical to be given a slot to use them (becase if you're on a long journey you can't easily just adjust your arrival time because you can't speed up much and slowing down just negates the speed advantage of the swap. The exception is if you use them in a city because you can't charge at home. But if that is the case, then you only need to charge once a week anyway and sitting at a fast charger for 40 mins and watching Netflix or whatever once a week probably isn't a massive issue for most people, vs driving further to use a swap station. Its not hard to imagine that on average a swap station would be 10 minutes drive further than a fast charger, because having the same number would be prohibitively expensive, so then you're negating 20 mins of benefit immediately.
      And it's so expensive. You need to have loads of packs just sitting around in addition to those in cars. There's already a commodity shortage and supply chain constraints in cell manufacturing, it's just not economical to start making extra packs that won't sit in vehicles.
      Yes, it's a good option for consumers, yes people can also charge normally, but it's highly unlikely to become widely adopted IMO

  • @mako5708
    @mako5708 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea.. but what about standardization and mass adoption of those Nio baterries? So you dont need to have swap stations for every EV brand which decides to go with baterries swaps? That will be a big leap forward. Also swap stations will need to be quite big to serve multiple cars at once, so will need more space and additional space for the empty baterries to store and charge.
    Great idea, but still many practical "but"s .
