    I live in New Zealand and we don't salt the roads in winter so car bodies last forever here. I presume that would be the same in that region of France where you filmed. I had cars in the UK that rusted away to nothing in less than 10 years yet I see the same models here in NZ and they are in great condition. The cars in that scrap yard probably were beyond economical mechanical repair and weren't considered classic cars at the time when they died.

    I am amazed at how good a condition they all are but even more gobsmacked that the Opel Corsa's arches are spotless! They are notorious for rust and these are like new!

    I love French scrapyards. But when I was last there they were full of 2CVs, GS, DS, Dyane, Ami, H vans, even some Tractions. Pug 203, 403, 104, 204, 304, 404, 504, 604, J7, J9, Renault Dauphines, 4, 8,10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, Simcas, even a few Panhards further south. It's so odd seeing cars that still "feel" recent, in yards like this. The Mk2 R5 seemed so modern - a friend had a brand new one when they first appeared.

    What a fantastic breakers yard, I could spend a couple of hours walking around there. I spotted the Peugeot 309's down by the 205's, they were great cars. All the cars of that era were crushed in this country, the scrap metal exported to China. A decent Peugeot 309 here now will cost you 2 grand minimum!

    • @peterduxbury927
      @peterduxbury927 ปีที่แล้ว

      I owned a '77 R5. It was a great little car, but the bodywork was paper-thin, and the car used to present lots of rust. I had to cut 150mm from the rear Hatch, and also 150mm from both doors, then replace the metal. It was that bad!! I made the engine very "peppy" - by polishing the inlet/exhaust ports. What amazed me about the R5, was the clutch. I had to replace mine. I opened the box (with the new Clutch Friction Disc inside). Disc was no larger than a CD. Another crazy Renault feature of the 5TL, was the rear wheels. They designed one of the rear wheels to be about 50mm out of lateral alignment, with the opposite rear wheel. This was to give a smoother ride. R5 Turbos lasted longer, because better cared-for.Many will be stashed in barns and garages around Europe.

    The good thing about scrap yards is the cars are for sale. So if you want to save one then you can buy it. It's not "criminal" as they can be saved, unlike if they were abandoned in a farmers field somewhere.

    The climate in France is better than the Uk so rust is better kept away. It is also probably the maintenance of the previous owners. Here in the Uk, majority see it as a use and abuse A to B machine.
    Scrapyards are a sad place in a way, all the cars have got a story to tell and previous owners and probably having memories of them. In another way, it keeps other similar cars on the roads.

    • @thesunreport
