In my personal opinion this is the greatest horror movie ever. People were literally having seizures and vomiting in the theaters. In NY they literally had ambulances at theaters to prepare.

The whole point is that Father Merrin knows EXACTLY who was in that room upstairs. Pazuzu knew Merrin was coming, and Merrin knew he was going in for the last fight of his life.
Exactly, that’s what the point of the beginning was to show Merrin had heart problems and that he faces off with Pazuzu (literally). Also why Reagan scream Merrin when he arrives.
The review lost all credibility when he said the opening scene could’ve been cut.
the demon was itching for a rematch after his defeat in africa decades prior.
The Exorcist is such a great movie with great characters and well paced scares, The Exorcist 3 is also super underrated

“The Exorcist “ was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture. Linda Blair was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. Not bad for a horror movie.
I think Damiens crisis of faith was very well depicted. Not only is he facing the loss of his mother, but he feels guilt because he wasn't able to care for her during her last days the way he wanted. The comment is made in the film that if Damien did the work he does for the church in a private practice he would be very wealthy. He also is struggling with bearing the burden of all the trauma his patients have gone through. I've always felt like the mix of those things really made for a compelling case of a man of God questioning his faith.
Love the movie, in my top 5 of all time. Glad to hear your take Cody, can't wait for the rest of the series.

There’s “The Exorcist”, then there’s everything else.
I’m pretty sure the “crisis of faith” was due to the fact that he felt like he “abandoned his mum”.
That’s why he had constant dreams an imagery of his mum calling for him and him not being able to reach or speak to her. ( to me one of the most effective scenes and felt really unnerving, I’ve had those dreams before)His faith that he lost was really faith he lost in himself and feeling like he didn’t do everything to help his mum that’s why he originally didn’t wanna help Linda’s character

Not just that but his mother was getting worse due to a mental disease, he wasn´t able to care for her and she ended up dying alone in an awful place. It wasn´t that she died of old age.

Father Karras is one of the most interesting and heartbreaking character in movies ever.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think it's directly stated in the movie but Damian is Greek. I'm half-Greek and I can tell you that family is very, very important in Greek culture. She probably felt betrayed by him. Then he felt guilty after she died, which only made it worse. That scene where he dreams about her in the hospital bed asking him why he left her alone is really haunting for me. The Exorcist is one of my top three favorite "scary" movies (the others being Psycho and The Shining).
The Exorcist is a masterpiece and it's more than a horror movie. Mix drama, life, with something no one can handle. There is a hopelessness in that mother that's seeing her daughter in a difficult situation to assimilate. And the ending is sad and tragic but beautiful at the same time.
this movie is iconic.. every exorcism or "demon movie" "possession movie" falls short compared to this one.. n like cody said. the visuals n the scenery to be hit so spot on in the 70s is Great..
Every shot and feel of this movie is amazing. You have to put yourself back in 1973/74. There was NOTHING like this back then. Shocks visually, but also deeply psychological... again put yourself back in 1974.
I saw it in theaters when I was 11. Everything you heard about the movie is true. People threw up, fainted, and Roseanne Barr saw it on acid and had to go to a mental health facility! It's the scariest movie of all time. Nothing even comes close. 🏈
As scary as it is its an excellent drama too, it really doesn't get enough credit for that aspect of the storytelling but it really does help to make it one of the greatest films of all time
First horror i saw was Halloween when i was 8. Terrified me to my core. Made me obsessed with horror films i watched everything and yeah they scared me but didn't give me the feeling Halloween did. Then i watched the Exorcist when i was 13 and that feeling came creeping back. Film is an utter masterpiece it's terrifying and brilliant an impossible combo for horror films.
This movie is 100% scarier for anyone who has fear of possession and faith.. which hits certain people harder than others..
and the spiderwalk down the stairs is still scary for anyone lol

My favorite movie of all time
I think this is such a masterpiece, not just because of the special effects and makeup work, but because of the slow build in the story. I love the psychological terror in this far more than the exorcism gore going on, and the subtleness of it is great, because it's almost subconscious in how it disturbs you as a viewer. Is it a bit dated by today's standards? Sure, but for the 70's, this was so ahead of its time, and the psychological terror of it all, and the story overall holds up for me.
It’s very interesting how the most horrific and disturbing movie of all time can also be one of the most moving and inspiring.
Perhaps that says something about the duality of human nature.
I was scarred of a lot of horror movies when I was a kid, which is the reason why I fell in love with scary movies. The exorcist though was the scariest fucking shit I've ever seen. Even as an adult it is the only movie that can still kind of scare me.

I think another positive aspect was the sound. To this day, you have to experience the sound of that movie in a theatre. It ties into the imagery and visuals for sure. The sound for The Exorcist is like no other impo ❤️

I've always said if I could go back to the 70's and see any horror movie I'd pick this (or the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Just to see the audience reactions. People fainting, puking, freaking out. I'd need an extra popcorn.
People overreacted by doing those things yes for it's time I'm sure it was shocking I probably wouldn't have reacted that way I wouldn't have wanted the attention.
The audience reactions were pretty wild to The Omen.
It’s funny because The Omen isn’t even a horror movie. Take out the “it’s all for you Damien” scene and the entire movie is a fantasy thriller. The tone is not horror at all.
The story, pacing, sound design, ending characters - everything is superb! Still holds today - loved it

Saw this movie, back in 2000, when it returned to theaters. Scared me so bad, me and my younger brother, almost ran out.
Woah dude, the opening 10 minutes is my favorite part of the movie. It absolutely should not be cut, it sets the perfect tone for the whole movie for me.

I had the same experience you did when I first saw The Exorcist, Cody. As a kid, I thought it was overrated and unfrightening, especially for its infamous reputation. However, when I re-watched it years later, I absolutely loved it. The acting, atmosphere, visuals, music and writing were all top notch and blew me away. As it stands now, The Exorcist is tied with The Thing and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter as my single favorite horror film of all time. Once I was able to divorce myself from all of the hype surrounding the product, I realized just how excellent it truly is.
The Exorcist is amazing because the effects still hold up to this day. I totally agree that Linda Blair had the potential to be an A-list actress. When I saw it, it less scared me than gave me the creeps. The way it built up and the way you see Regan's transformation is unnerving. Definitely a classic of the genre for sure.
Love the build up to 31 on the 31st every year man. Never fails to make me excited

Still a great scary movie. Watched it with my dad when I was a teenager. And it' was shocking how much it repulsed people when it first came out.

1 is amazing. The slow pace and build up is masterful. 3 is a great movie too.
It’s an extremely exhausting movie. Even though it’s brilliant and amazing, it’s just takes a lot out of you. By the time you get to the actual exorcism, it’s like you’ve already been through a marathon of harrowing things. Sad, frightening, tense, disgusting and simply uncomfortable. I’ve watched it and studied it as a student and a fan and anyone who had a place in its creation has my utmost respect.
As for Linda Blair, I don’t believe she knew what she was doing exactly. But once it was released, she couldn’t go anywhere without frightening people. Couldn’t have been easy.
I agree. By the end of the movie, I am emotionally exhausted.
I think I can clear up the fathers crisis there. See, the hospital she was in, he put her there. “Why did you do this to me dimmy?”
She was happy in her home she wanted to die in her home. So when he came back and was saying “I’m going to take you out of here mom.”
She was so hurt and betrayed that she couldn’t even look at her own son. That shook the father. Then he finds out she died inside the place she didn’t want to be, that he put her, the last time he saw her she resented him. It was not a loving goodbye. And now the father had to sit there in that maelstrom of loss, hurt, something he never gets to repair. He felt like his mother died hating him.
So in that regard I understood that on a pretty deep level.
I think Jason Miller is the standout in this movie. His acting was perfection in my opinion. Do you guys know what famous actor Jason Miller is the father of?

How about the shot when Detective Linderman was looking up at Regan's window from his car, and you see her shadow floating around in the room...WHILE SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE STRAPPED DOWN TO THE BED!! That still freaks me out.
It was rereleased for the 25th anniversary at the theaters in '98. I had to see it, it was like night and day compared to watching this at home. So many different sounds all around you that you don't hear. It was awesome.
I saw it in '98 too. Nothing like the theater experience. First kids were laughing. Then they were in complete silence. I guess they were used to the possessed doll Chucky. There is absolutely nothing scary about today's horror movies. I still love horror but let's be honest. The Exorcist is still the greatest horror movie.
The exorcist is so entirely immersive that it demands to be seen on the big screen.

This movie fs is iconic in every meaning and the cursed part that when the set burned but the room where the exorcism happened was left clean and unharmed is just kinda creepy to think about
I love this movie. I understand what you’re saying in that it’s really slow, but for me, the slow pacing works. The way you feel about this movie is kinda close to how I feel about The Shining honestly, I never understood the hype for that movie. But hey, to each his own. I think this movie is a masterclass in filmmaking. I probably prefer the more modern versions of the possession story (like The Conjuring, Insidious, etc) from a pure enjoyment standpoint, but from a filmmaking standpoint, this is one of the greatest movies of all time. It’s definitely gonna be thought to rank in my 31 on 31.
This film is a masterpiece imo. It’s beautifully acted & directed. I actually disagree with a couple of your points though. I think the movie made it very clear that the father had been losing his faith long before his mother died. His expressions & overall demeanor convey he no longer really believes & he’s just carrying on like it’s a “job” he has to go to even though he has contempt for it deep down. Also, I think some of the scenes in this film are shocking even by today’s standards. A 12 year old girl stabs herself in the vag multiple times with a cross yelling “fuck me” over & over lol. I agree I was never really scared by this movie but very few films actually scare me. My Mom however thinks this is the scariest movie ever but she also got scared by Ozzy Osborne’s voice saying “I am iron man” 🤣🤣
The Father Merris standing in front of the pazuzu statue is a Battle stand off of Good vs Evil and the pazuzu head was cursed from the jump and once pazuzu found out about Regan's healing talent it was go time and latched on to her soul. Excellent Movie!
I saw clips of this movie on a "Haunted Hollywood" compilation VHS hosted by James Carradine. Even snippets of the movie freaked me out, let alone the entire movie.
Pazuzu isn’t really named in the movie except when there’s the statue appearing in the bedroom, when you can’t faintly hear the name. Also, the epilogue in Iraq is necessary. We encounter Father Merrin. There are signs of a future fight happening (dogs fighting when he faces the statue) and an ominous wind blowing (Pazuzu is the demon of the southwestern wind). It also resonates when Regan speaks in reverse where she names Merrin. Although the character is only present for about 20 minutes, he’s present from the moment Karras sees Regan for the second time. Again, it’s another build-up within the movie.
Those pazuzu quick cuts still gives me the chills every time..even just thinking about it
Part three is the best one. Brad Dourif's performance was Oscar worthy, without question.
No way is it better than the original. Brad Dourif is amazing though.

Linda Blair has done some good ones outside of The Exorcist. Repossessed was to this what the first Scary Movie was to Scream, and starred her and Leslie Nielson, so that one is kinda away. But my fav 100% away from this franchise, Savage Streets. She plays a woman going out for revenge against a gang who brutally attacked her deaf mute sister. Which her sister being played by another icon in horror movies, Linnea Quigley. It is a good movie IMO.

I never saw that movie. I will have to look it up. I saw this one movie that was a couple of years after the exorcist where she gets put into an institution and I think she's brutally raped while she's there. I forget the actual name of the movie but it had innocents in the title I think and I found it on youtube. I only heard about it wen I watched a biography of hers.

I can thoroughly say this film was the only horror film to truly scare me in a way that leaves a lasting impression it scares you and makes you think. Classic
My favorite movie and director. In 1989 at 11 I told my mother one day “Horror movies don’t really scare me. I get a sense of suspense but I’m not afraid.” She replied “have you see The Exorcist?” “What’s that?”
I went in to this film knowing NOTHING about the plot. I STARTED watching 6” away from my 19” tv. Just as I got bored with it the s#i+ hit the fan. I freaked out and hit the stop button on the VCR. I finally got the nerve to finish it (after inviting a friend over). My family noticed I was white as a sheet after it. “No movie can scare you huh?” My
Mom said. Even in the 80’s and 90’s this movie was very effective. Young people are after a different kind of scary now. I remember watching paranormal activity and thinking this is so corny but the rest of the theater (except one other guy having a disappointed reaction like me) was enthralled so times change. As an adult I dig The Exorcist for being carefully made. It actually takes itself seriously and is directed as a heavy drama. I disagree with some points in this review. One: the scene in Iraq set the mood and foreshadowed the film. Nice shots of him walking through tunnels with the sun coming through cracks overhead setting up a dark and light motif. There were bad omens left and right showing he was a very holy man going to have a battle coming. Then an almost western style gunslinger face off and unnerving soundscape dissolving into Georgetown. The shot I always felt is the demon flying across the river into her house. Very creepy stuff.
Two: His mother dying wasn’t it. It’s she died alone and wasn’t found for a couple days. He was guilty he couldn’t take better care of her physically or financially. His uncle made sure to kick him in the balls for it on top of it.
I think people are so freaking spoon fed nowadays they’ve lost the part of their brain where imagination kicks in to fill in the blanks. That’s what truly is scary. My friend watched it an said Insidious was more scary to him. I watched it the next night and started laughing at how cartoonish it was. They showed ‘the devil’ cloven hoofs and all. To me it was like cinematic cheese wiz. So scary is subjective, but well made is not. As far as being a well crafted film The Exorcist is tough to beat in any genre let alone horror.

Friedkin is one of my favorite directors. Sorcerer is an amazing movie he made and it gets overlooked.
Just thought I'd mention this in case people didn't know. Linda Blair has a cameo in the first Scream movie. She's one of the reporters that shows up at the high school after ghost face murders Steve and Casey.
I love The Exorcist and I am 21 right now! I think The Exorcist is such a well written and well done film! It is so brilliant! I can definitely see myself watching again! It is such a classic! Absolutely has aged like wine!

Actually, the only reason the people in the theater either passed out or got sick was because of that hospital scene where Regan gets poked in the neck, they never really made a fuss about everything else. What makes it even creepier is that a real life serial killer made a cameo as the surgeon's assistant in this movie.

One of the greatest horror movies of all time, but honestly I loved part 3 better. Exorcist 3 was a low key classic. It shook me, especially the nurse scene, wheww.
Linda Blair was in Hell Night, which is another fun, low budget slasher movie from 1981. Interesting to see her in a horror movie as an adult.
Enjoy your content but a few points.
1. Karras' crisis of faith is not because his mom simply dies, but because she basically dies alone in squalor because of his vocation to be a Jesuit priest where he essentially has no financial means to care for her despite him also being a psychiatrist (the church paid for his schooling). In the film they show an argument between him and his uncle bringing up this point when his mother is initially put in a run-down psyche ward. Then later in the movie his friend Father Dyer mentions that Karras took his mother out of the ward and brought her back to her house in New York hoping that he could eventually get a transfer from his psychiatric duties in Georgetown to New York to care for her, which the church rejects and she ends up dying sick and alone in her apartment and her body isn't found by neighbors for days later. Its because of him being a priest and the church failing him in his hour of need is why Karras was losing his faith. By the time he's evaluating Regan, he only sees her as a mentally ill child through the scientific lens of being a psychiatrist and is only convinced of her being possessed when the word's "Help Me" form on her chest.
2. While its been a while since I've seen the longer cut, I don't believe the demon is ever referred to by the name "Pazuzu" until the later films. While the name is brought up in the novel and statues of Pazuzu are shown in the movie, no audience member in 1973 outside an art major in Mesopotamian art and mythology would ever make the connection. The only time the demon identifies itself it says "...I'm the Devil..." which to the general 1973 audience member is exactly what is possessing Regan. The filmmakers made the wise decision to avoid given the demon its name in the dialogue because "Pazuzu" just sounds funny to a western audience and somewhat deflates the threat level of the possibility that the girl is possessed by Satan himself as the demon claims. Exorcist 2 and both versions of 4 unfortunately make the Pazuzu connections explicit in the dialogue and of course its hilarious. Exorcist 3 like the first movie wisely avoids naming the demon altogether.
But I can see why this movie isn't some people's thing. Its essentially a family drama about a single mother trying to care for her increasing deteriorating child that slowly builds to the horrific climax. It's not exactly a "fun" horror movie to watch and its overall pretty pessimistic except for Regan having survived whole ordeal.
This movie takes its time and is a classic. In it’s time it was scary. Nowadays it’s been copied so much the scares don’t hit the same. It’s like the Beatles had yesterday, than an endless list of covers.

I think personally that Father Carras’s real crisis of faith came from his failures-of-will. He couldn’t bring himself to invest in caring for his mother the way she deserved because of how much her dementia/whichever disease had made her a shell of herself. I don’t think it was so much “how could you let this happen, God?” But more “How come my faith isn’t giving me the strength to be who I know I should be”, plus he was also a man of science- and these years were huge for a philosophical shift between Religion and “Science.”
Just my two-cents.
I agree. I think Cody may have missed these somewhat subtle nuances of the story. I could see many people missing them.

Scariest movie ever in my opinion. This is one movie I can't watch alone at night still...I'm 40 and seen it 100xs. I just read the book 2 months ago. I'm not someone who reads alot but I couldn't put the book down it engrossed me and I highly suggest it
Yeees Cody, tha visuals in this movie have been haunting me eva since I was 10 years old. Shes been in my nightmares for years. And even though a lot of tha movie is a bit boring. Every time I went into that room with either "Tha Priest" "or Tha Mother" I was scared as hell. Tha way she started out, so sweet and innocent and then slowly deteriorated as she became more and more possessed was true horror for me. Im a true horror fan and I think I've seen every horror movie and this is tha only movie that still makes me afraid to go into th basement at nite.

Love your commentary. This came out when I was a kid. Not sure which responsible a** adult allowed me to see it at 6, but at 44, I’m still f’d up. It’s absolutely terrifying, & I REFUSE to watch it again.

As far as the first Neg I believe it was put in to unrattle the viewer. Give a sense of something ancient and forbidding along with a bit of disorientation. Well more so than introducing a character. I can see why you would say it could be cut out, but without it the movie doesnt get under your skin at all as it does when it is left in.
even though its 48 yrs old ( wow ) its to me still the scariest movie of all time.some will dissagree and thats cool .but seein this at 13 i had nightmares for weeks lol im 49 and i still dont like to watch it before i go to sleep lol

Linda Blair was phenomenal but her voice was dubbed by Mercedes Cambridge who was disappointed by being uncredited. She would drink malt liquor and eat raw eggs to achieve the voice and had a priest with her to pray. Real messed up way of method acting but McCambridge was awesome as well nonetheless.

I actually prefer the theatrical cut. But what I really recommend is the book. I had already seen the movie when I read the book, and it still rocked my world. I really like the movie, but it wasn’t one of my favorites. Which is why the book surprised me. It is my favorite book of all time! I highly recommend, it is so creepy and well written
It’s interesting to hear a younger person’s views. Unlike older generations, this film didn’t traumatized you. Growing up in the 70’s there was nothing as scary as the Exorcist.
The scene in Iraq is vital for the whole movie. Sets up the foreshadowing of a battle in the future between Merrin and Pazuzu.
Also, Karras lost his faith before his mother died. There is a lot more too it than that. He feels guilty for not being with his mother when she died, and that plays into the main reason of hos crisis: feeling as though humans are not worthy to be loved by God. That is what Pazuzu tries to use against him in the end
I can't imagine how ones reaction was to something like this at its present time. Having a 12 year old actress behind such disturbing dialogue and action sequences must have been absolutely shocking. It doesn't affect today's audiences the same way. But back then it must have been an absolute a shocker. It's a very dark movie. Unsettling and it's just completely iconic.
I think David Gordon Green taking on the reboot/sequel is quite audacious. This is a classic that is untouchable to this day much more so than HALLOWEEN. It's like taking on JAWS. very bold. He better know wtf he's doing.
This movie is the movie that is still considered to this day as the scariest movie ever made. Every new omen-esque type movie that is released to this day stands against the standards this movie set almost 50 years ago.
I don't think it's at the level of hype it's received but I'm completely biased because of the many other scary movies I've seen long before this.
But the crucifix to the vaginal scene is enough to make me wonder how I would have reacted to something like this in 1973.
My god, just thinking about it is disturbing.

Over the past 5-6 years, because I realized I haven't seen a lot of horror films, every October I have been making myself watch any and all horror movies I can think of. One movie a night every day of October. In this franchise, I like this one and Exorcist III the most. III is one of the most underrated horror movies I've seen.
I was too young to see The Exorcist when it opened in theaters in 1973. When I finally saw it for the first time on VHS video tape, I was 17. I didn't think it was scary like everyone said it was. A couple scenes kind of creeped me out, but otherwise I wasn't traumatized or unable to sleep at night. I was just kind of like hmm...! 🤔

But I always really like the slow pace of this movie … I really enjoy films where they’re trying to get to the bottom of a problem and it just gets worse … a bit like alien with all the medical side bit … also felt father caras had kind of lost his faith a little bit anyway and his mothers death just sealed it … great review all the same … keep up the good work my friend

I think you missed the point slightly, with the mother's death triggering his crisis.
Obviously he knows people die of old age, but for one thing it's a very different thing to actually witness it happen and it's enough to put anyone over the edge.
For another thing, it's not Just the death. It's everything. Not only the whole concept of getting older and sick and in pain and dying alone, but before she dies, we follow him and see his reactions.
The homeless man. The awful state of the place his mother lives, which must be where he grew up as a kid.
The harsh realities of life are hitting him and it doesn't Just happen during the film.
He's been going through it since before the events of the film.
