      @nu-metalfan2654 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @dizzlethagod. I think the reason why Exorcist 3 and Psycho 2 are so underrated, is because Exorcist 3 came out 17 years after the original, and Psycho 2 came out 23 years after the original. Also with Exorcist 3 as you said Exorcist 2 was such a bomb that no matter what, Exorcist 3 couldn’t get out of that shadow, I mean there are people that don’t even know there was an Exorcist 3, I didn’t until I watched it. And with Psycho 2, the original Psycho is so beloved that no matter what, Psycho 2 just wouldn’t get out of that shadow, and as well there are people that don’t even know there were sequels to Psycho, I didn’t until I watched them.

    Great review and def a hidden gem. I vibed with the "slow" start because it evoked a 70's tone and aesthetic that's difficult and rare for a film from the '90s. The banter between the two leads is so intentional by the writer, director, and actors and I love it.

    Great review for a great movie, one of the best horror sequels. I do love the exorcism scene at the end but your suspicions are correct, Blatty originally didn't really want an exorcism finally but the studio wanted one. I'd recommend you check out the director's cut if only for the 3rd act which is different, though I still prefer the theatrical release.

  • @byron19800
    @byron19800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Actually, "The Exorcist" title was added just to make a familiar connection with the first one, for the audience. It was supposed to be simply named Legion, after Blatty's novel. And, yes, the exorcism scene in the end wasn't supposed to be in the movie, it was requested by the studio, as Blatty had no intention to add such a scene.

    The writer of both novels, William Peter Blatty, (The Exorcist and Legion) and the director of this film didn't want the exorcism ending. The studio forced it on him because it was an Exorcist film, and they thought the audience would expect it. So, you are correct in your assessment. All in all, it's one of my favorite horror films. Great stuff.

  • @marcoslaureano5562
    @marcoslaureano5562 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This movie is based on a book by the director named Legion - it was meant to be a stand alone story which was simply CONNECTED to the Exorcist. The book is AWESOME. Blatty is an absolute master and is at the top of his game here. and the fact that he directed the movie and did just as good a job as Friedkin did on the original is INCREDIBLE to me. You never see authors direct their own work (and absolutely nail it) - but it worked so well for this movie because Blatty KNOWS how to scare people - and he's also a master of dialogue. George C. Scott and Brad Dourif BOTH deserved Oscar considerations for this move. ESPECIALLY Dourif, he's incredible. In my humble opinion THIS movie is the greatest horror sequel of all time and it literally gave BIRTH to Seven (which in my opinion is not as good as this movie). EDIT - I forgot to mention that the main reason that the kills work, where you hardly see anything and it's even creepier because of it - that works mainly because of George C.Scott's totally underrated performance as Kinderman and Blatty's directing of course. Edit: you should check out this very in depth review of this movie that makes the case that this is the greatest psychological thriller of all time and highlights all the little details that the guy doing the review believes makes it the greatest. th-cam.com/video/uyg8UxnRyQQ/w-d-xo.html

    The dream sequence was pretty cool, actually. The kid he was talking to is one of the victims of the Gemini Killer, so that makes it a relevant scene, by itself. But GCS is dreaming that he's in a Limbo place, between Heaven and Hell, with Angels and deceased humans waiting and walking around, prior to their eternal destination, if you will. So, the scene, while admittedly surrealistic, was a viable part of the plot. Also, it was cool because Georgetown University Basketball legend Patrick Ewing has a cameo in it! (I grew up in the Maryland/D.C. area and my father worked at Georgetown University, so we were psyched to see Patrick in that film)

    The director's cut is available, as a work print, on blu ray from Shout Factory. It's a VERY different movie. All of scenes between Brad Dourif and George C. Scott were reshot in a much different setting. There is no exorcism at the end, no Father Morning, and no Jason Miller as Patient X/Father Karras.
    Brad Dourif was cast as Father Karras and at the beginning you see them performing an autopsy. So in the director's cut we never see the face of the Gemini, because Brad Dourif is supposed to be the possessed Father Karras. In fact, the movie wasn't originally called Exorcist 3, it was called Legion.
    It's a much more grim movie, with an ending that's abrupt and pretty unsatisfying. The studio hated it, and had William Peter Blatty reshoot a lot and create an exorcism so it could be marketed as Exorcist 3. And this is over of the VERY FEW cases in which I think the studio was right. It made for a much better movie

  • @JohnDavidSullivan
    @JohnDavidSullivan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The director's cut is available on Arrow Video here in the UK, I think it's titled "Legion" as that is what William Peter Blatty wanted to call the film, but obviously the producers got the upper hand. The scenes that have been added in are in bad quality unfortunately - would be nice if they remastered them.

    Exorcist 3 and Psycho 2 are not only the greatest sequels in horror history but the most underrated. Coincidentally, the writer of Psycho 2, Tom Holland (not Peter Parker/Spiderman) is the director of Child's Play, so there's your Brad Dourif connection, lol.

  • @scottkapczynski6008
    @scottkapczynski6008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason why the exorcism ending feels a bit tacked on and studio mandated is because it was. The studio felt that an Exorcist movie needed an exorcism in it, so the director (who is the author of the original Exorcist) obliged since he didn't want anyone else to reshoot the scene. So they invented the new priest character and hired Nicol Williamson to play him and inserted his scenes in the movie (notice how he never interacts with any other character besides the demon and only referenced once by another character to George C. Scott).
    In the original cut of the film there's no exorcism and Brad Dourif plays the possessed inmate throughout the whole movie and the detective simply shoots him in the end. I also think the inmate is only possessed by the Gemini and the demon itself is not present in the body. When Blatty had to reshoot the ending, they were able to cast Jason Miller to play Father Karras again for the demon possession scenes. So the trade off with the Director Cut vs Theatrical is more Brad Dourif and a more subtle (but ultimately the same) ending, but then you miss Jason Miller's performance as the Karras and the demon. I feel the theatrical version is the superior of the two for that fact alone since it actually feels connected to the first movie with at least one returning actor. George C. Scott and Ed Flanders in the movie are returning supporting characters, Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer, from the first movie but a lot of first time viewers don't realize it since they are totally recast and without Jason Miller there a lot of first time viewers would be confused on why Brad Dourif has anything to do with Exorcist 1.
    As for the wacked out dream sequence, its very William Peter Blatty. He's got a quirky sense of humor steeped in catholic symbolism and this scene reeks of his other directorial effort "The Ninth Configuration." The book that its based on is also an Exorcist spinoff featuring very minor character that is an astronaut (the guy Regan said "You're gonna to die up there" before pissing on the floor). "The Ninth Configuration" features a lot of surreal but satiric scenes (like Jesus crucified on the moon for instance).

    I honestly saw the Exorcist III on TV and I'm gonna have to rewatch it again because I don't remember it.
    I do remember everyone talking about the scene with the nurse. Unfortunately, like you, I saw the Exorcist III when I was a kid on TV. It's funny the stuff you can appreciate when you're older so if I can find a copy of it, I'll watch it again.

    You're actually spot on when it comes to the ending. Originally, the climax was when Kinderman races home to save his family. That all plays out, but then he just goes to Father Karras, shoots him in his cell, aaand it ends.
    The exorcism was added because they felt they needed one in a movie titled "Exorcist 3".
    While the first is still my favorite of the series, this is a fantastic and proper sequel. Brad Dourif is chilling in every scene he is in, there are a lot of disturbing moments that leave the horror up to your imgaination (It's a Wonderful Life 😬), one of the best jump scares, and George C. Scott gives a good, little over the top performance. Good review, Cody 👍

    Just watched it a couple of minutes ago and I really liked it. Brad Dourif was perfect and he was just in a cell, such a great performance. The way the grandma saved Julie, detective's daughter, it was a tense scene.

    I remember my dad taking me to see this in the theater when I was a kid and we were both incredibly creeped out by it.
    One jump scare that is more subtle but nevertheless very well done is when Det. Kinderman is in the confession booth after the priest is found dead and he's sliding the inside panel back and forth trying to figure out how the killer carried out the murder. There's already a sense of unease, given what we know just happened there, and we're led to believe Kinderman is alone. Then suddenly the panel slides back open seemingly on its own. Great subtle direction without the use of dramatic sound effects to enhance the scare.
    Also, instead of showing the murders of the priest and Father Dyer, we're given verbal descriptions which leave a lot more to the imagination. Also a great choice of direction as it adds to the general sense of dread and unease.
    Ironically enough, I think the exorcism scene is the weakest point of the movie. I don't hate it, but I think it pales in comparison to the mystery and intrigue that precede it.

    The first half is the best part to me. The friendship between the cop and the priest is endearing. When he is killed, it is genuinely sad. Douriff is good but a little over the top imo. The atmosphere is what spooks me the most.

    I'm a massive fan of the actor Brad Dourif who appears in this and as a matter of fact on your recommendation I went out and got the box set of Chucky films and I love him even more now
    I grew up watching a lot of Sci Fi and Brad Dourif has excellent roles in several shows
    He brings his A Game in Star Trek Voyager in the episodes "Meld" and "Basics, Parts 1 and 2"
    YOU'VE GOT to see a Babylon 5 episode called "Passing Through Gethsemane".
    He's also in an episode of the X Files called "Beyond the Sea"
    I won't spoil the roles he plays but if you want to be completely creeped out while also watch your heart just break for the characters he plays
    Those are all excellent roles

    So, I am a horror fanatic. I've seen it all, and on top of that, I live in Central Pa. During Halloween, we have Field of Screams, the Eastern State Pen, the Jean Bornet Tavern, the U.S. Hotel, the Knickerbaucker Tavern (both of which I frequent because I love less then 5 miles from either) and Penhurst Asylum. All of which I have been too.
    There are three stories that creep me out. The short story by King, 1408 (not the movie), The Exercise 3, and the Poe poem Alone.

    I didn’t appreciate this film until I learned about filmmaking. Now, I watch it twice per month & learn something new each time . The screenplay, cinematography and creep factor makes it a top psychological thriller . There is a BTS on TH-cam that goes in depth & a nice portion is with Brad Douriff . At age 40, I put this in my top five horror movies . A gem

      The dream sequence is heaven . George C Scott walks through In his dreams and spots the murdered kid from the beginning & talks with him . Then he spots his priest friend thinking they are having the same dream but is soon reminded that his friend is dead. That’s when it cuts to the next morning and he gets the call

    I saw it in the theater when it came out. For how many times I've seen the hallway scene, I still Jump! The music is a big impact as the camera zooms in.
    The dream sequence is the murdered victims in heaven, thus they have their wings. The young black kid has the huge scar, due to him being decapitated. A definite hidden gem, Brad Dourif should have received an Oscar, I mostly watch it just for his scenes. Great review Cody👍👍!

    I have to agree with you on this.
    I watched this (for the first time) after part 2 and it actually SCARED me shitless. That creepy hallway scene, all the still shots, the music and Brad fucking Dourif. It gets better everytime I watch it and it's gotten to the point I actually think it's better than the original.
    If not better, than scarier.
    Not too many horror films scare me senseless these days, but this one still gives me chills. Another one, to an extent, is probably Hellraiser, namely the resurrection scene.
    Just these creepy, gothic and atmospheric type movies get me on edge.
