The cigarettes are because he's a soldier and that's a trope based in reality, and it's supposed to imply that he is not completely unflappable and deals with stress. Equipping the cigarettes will steady your aim with sniper rifles, so they can be used instead of the benzos as a muscle relaxant. Yeah. Funny that she calls serious issues about war, nuclear waste that change the world for good "banana bonkers" but a shallow romance presented in a glimpse serious.
if that's how i came accross i'm sorry, what i meant to be calling "banana bonkers" were the over the top things, that aren't necessarily based in reality like the invisibility or the entire psycho mantis fight, not the core message of the game. When i said "it goes from banana bonkers to serious" i meant to be talking about the shift in tone. I love the core message of the game.
@@RottenPapi mgs1 is the most grounded one in the franchise, even twin snakes went over the top with the same background. But the special forces unit foxhound is the game version of near super heroes specialists, each one with extrapolated abilities. Even mantis, with his psych skills of reading minds and moving stuff, but i really doubt a guy sitting on a table bending a fork would make a great boss fight, so yes, even tho its my least favorite fight in the game, for the time it made a blast.
Being grounded compared to the other games doesn't make it not pretty bonkers haha! I love their stories and they touch on some very real issues, but they are also intentionally very zany action movie plots too. Part of the charm is how they can pull this off so well. Bonkers was a very fair description and doesn't diminish the more sobering messaging.
Deepthroat was the name of the guy who leaked Watergategate (sorry I mean Watergate, just making a random Mitchell & Webb reference). It then got referenced by pornography and the rest is history.
Jepp and Snake explains that himself literally 2 sentences after his introduction. Maybe if you listened to the dialogue instead of skipping it you might even learn one or two things :)

To answer the 20:24 questions of Liquid's accent maybe this can help: Liquid Snake was given to Britain by the United States to determine what effect a difference in environment would have on personal traits while Solid Snake was keeped in America. He was recruited by the British SIS and carried out espionage activities that's the background Foxhound had on 2005 so far during MGS1. In MGS5 it was revealed he escape Britain and fleed to Africa to create his own militia at the age of 12 (1984), during that year he meet Ocelot and Master Miller. He went missing following the end of the Gulf War. Maybe a special unit had recognised his unexplained skills as a soldier and extracted him from the SAS to serve as a spy or assassin or whatnot. Then later, though his own skills, Liquid discovered the truth about genome soldiers and les Efant Terrible project, developed a bitter hatred for big boss and he status quo, built alliances, and eventually assembled The Fox Unit in preparation for Shadow Moses. Kojima always outdoes everyone with the crazy storylines, and MGS is no exception. Especially with the unexpected love story! I always loved the level of acting they put into even the short amounts of dialogue in the phonecalls. From what he means, I think the smokeless is more of a special cigarette wrap where the heat from then lit end of the cigarette doesn't produce excess smoke or such to cut down on 2nd hand smoke, while still giving the nicotine hit and smoke out the inhaled in..maybe even doubling the intake? Snake isn't supposed to be admirable, cool, or heroic. He's exactly what he says he is: an old killer hired to do some wetwork. He's a traumatized, broken shell of a man turned into what he is by a life of violence, to the point that it's the only thing he actually enjoys, since he's basically become an adrenaline junkie, and nothing else can make you feel alive like cheating death in a battle. Meryl fangirling over him as a legendary hero is meant to show how naïve she is about the true nature of war and being a soldier, because this is an anti-war story through and through. That's why Kojima was so pissed when players thought he was the coolest badass ever and wanted to be "just like Snake," and why Metal Gear Solid 2 was a massive personal "fuck you" to players.

I remember going to my cousin’s house for Thanksgiving in 1998. Didn’t own a PlayStation at the time, only a N64 and thought spy games were only like Goldeneye 64. I remember playing the intro and the dock scene before we left his house to go home. I don’t know why, but the music in that scene just stuck with me the whole ride home. Felt so epic. I remember getting a PlayStation soon after and this game was my first game. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Felt like you were playing the best action movie of all time, in video game form. Judging by the amount of people who have remade certain scenes of this game with modern technology, I would say that I am far from the only one that this game struck a deeply personal cord with. I’m so blessed to have this game be there for my rise through childhood.
Nice to see the perspective from a player who didn't grow up with the game or wasn't even born yet. I was 9 when it came out so I hold nostalgic values for it. It's the first game that impressed me with its production values and on a technical level showcasing the power of the first Playstation hardware.

This is a great look at Metal Gear from a beginner perspective, I've only heard diehard fans talk about the games in too much detail to fully understand but this was a great first look at the series. Well done Papi and Matt 👏
Thanks so much sloth! Thats definitely the goal of the series since people can feel so strongly about these old games it can be really hard to tell whether or not it would actually be a fun play today! Really happy you liked it!
I never understand why these videos of people playing for the first time always act so confused at the Deepthroat part, when literally the next line is Snake saying it’s a code name from Watergate.
I'm canadian, they didn't teach us about watergate in school. Being that American history isn't taught everywhere in the world and the term deepthroat has other connotations it makes perfect sense that people would be surprised.
Now it's time for Metal Gear Solid 2! It goes off the deep-end in ways you could never imagination. MGS3 is probably the best game overall; if you seek it out, find the director's cut "Subsistence". It has a better camera and includes Metal Gear 1 and 2. MGS4 is my personal favorite because it allows all kinds of shenanigans.
Another insightful & fun review from my favorite Zoomer! Also amazing Snake cosplay! Definitely gonna use the link in your description to rewatch your MGS playthrough 👏🤓
lol, the Rail Gun launching warheads without needing a missile is geniunly the scariest world changing doomsday weapon and a lot of people had the same reaction of NFG. 🤣🥰 "Badass Russian Sniper" - game is straight up tells you She's a Kurd. If you are into the story and get into the right codec call's, Snake even sympathizes with her a little wondering if she would have turned out differently if the US didn't abandon the Kurds and let Saddam GenoSlide them. Many American's regret abandoning allies, especially to such a grim fate that Big Boss apparently rescued her from. So much historical context in MGS, don't feel bad not knowing but the context does make metal gear super sad.
I played this game for the first time like 3 months ago and I was lucky enough to have all the OG hardware (ps1, CRT TV). In my opinion, this game is absolutely worth buying an old PS1 and old TV to experience the old school vibes. If you really like it, you’ll probably purchase a PS3 to play MGS4 after that like I did haha.
Great video papi, and great editing mat! The huge amount of work you guys put into these really shows with all the background info, edit timing and overall quality of the video.
These reviews are awesome you only have done 2 so far but you make it seem like you have been making high quality reviews for a long time. Great job. Glad someone is still showing love and reviewing older games
There was also a trick Psycho mantis did if you had a dualshock controller: He'd tell you to lay your controller down on the floor, and he'd "move" The controller by activating the rumble packs inside the controller.
Yes Sir. The zoomer did play and finish the game. The commentary? Yes sir, she hit on many of the "solid" points. No sir, sadly she did not mention the "Super Baby Method" line, I agree sir, very disappointing. No, I don't believe so..... I think given the circumstances we can give her a pass for disliking Meryl Correct sir, she did enjoy Otacon... Yes Sir, I know, a clear stand in character for yourself There is no way to know if she will continue the series sir, however I think some pressure can be applied... Yes sir, we will keep her under surveillance...yes and her cat too... Yes, sir...., Yes. Thank you and good bye...Kojima San *boom*
I think the facts about the railgun and other weaponry really deepens the feel of the weapons we are taking down. We can understand the scale of it! Also it's very educational about the times! Every metal gear has historic facts to envelope it in the era it takes place in! Maybe I'm just a boomer tho... (1994)
honestly this is such a fair opinion i didn't consider! i have pretty bad adhd that was not medicated during the time i played this game which i think made me sitting through those worse than it does for others (not just zoomer brain haha). I think for kojimas overall message and goal for the game it makes sense to include these educational moments, i just wasn't expecting 20 minutes of exposition in between actually playing the game if that makes sense and i think it could surprise other first time players! That said though i think the codec was such a cool exposition tool and even if some of the stuff was long i wouldn't change it
@@RottenPapi I'm sorry tho, Kojima's exposition dumps can be quite a handful if you don't care too much for lore. I liked in MGSV that most lore was on casette tapes you could play in the field so you could do missions and sneak around while listening to it seemlessly! You should try it! The first part prologue called "Ground Zeroes" is a real good example if you wanna try it! It comes right before the big game "The Phantom Pain"
Just found your channel and i'm loving these reviews. They're high quality and very informative. Also appreciate the more "outsider" perspective. It's fresh and honest without being condecending toward old school fans. Honestly i just want more of this, so that's an easy subscribe for me!
I just found you through this video, and I was surprised to see you only have 3 (non short) videos! You should keep going with this format, this was very fun, and I say that as someone who played this as a kid.
As a millennial, it's great to see the younger generation recognize this great game. It holds up now but there wasn't anything like it at the time. Great video and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
great review! I'm starting to think that the only way to properly fight Psycho Mantis has to be through emulator or PS1 mini console). I love this franchise so much! You'd love MGS2. Give it a chance if you have it!
Dude, upload the videos of you playing threw it! Also, Deepthroat was the informant from the Watergate cover up. They say it right in the game as well.
Played this for the first time with a friend last year. We both knew about Psycho Mantis fight on the Playstation but not how it was handled on the PC version. After realising keyvoard is the only way but wanting to continue with controller (we were playing from my couch on my TV) we had to get creative. So I added the game to my Steam library (bought it on GOG) and mapped the keyboard controls to my controller via Steam input and defeated Psycho Mantis. Felt even cooler than using another controller port. As for the game itself, it's pretty good. Kinda like what would happen if someone would make a retro throwback stealth game that get's the feeling of old games down but is also a good game. Solid mechanics, great attention to detail, dodgy controls, awful dialog. Not the best game in the series but certanly worth playing today.
Man that's such a cool experience you had with your friend! I agree with your points, i don't think all the dialogue is awful personally but yeah some of it is pretty baaad hahhha
@@RottenPapi Yeah, it's not ALL bad. 😅 MGS3 has actually some realy good dialog, or writing in generel, outside of the codec calls. 😉 Overall I just think it's the weakest part of the series with some high highs but also realy low lows. Great video btw. Was suprised after your Tomb Raider vid that it was the first on your channel. Felt way more like skill through experience. Script, presentation, editing, the whole package. Looking forward for more!
Thank you for your review. MGS changed my life and has helped make me into the person that I am today. I feel like I am at my best when I am fighting for others. The lessons I learned in this game helped me gain perspective on what I need to do in order to help those less fortunate than me.
TH-cam just recommended this video to me haha. This video is really well done! I’m also a fellow zoomer who recently finished playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time, and I’m currently playing through the series for the first time on my channel. I’m seeing a resurgence with the MGS series recently and I’m happy to see I’m not the only one experiencing these games for the first time.
You know, Metal Gear doesn't use cutscenes the way other games do. Having a sensible balance between cutscene and gameplay... I've always despised that kind of game!
You know, the whole "Deepthroat" thing got me curious... (what a way to start a comment!) What *do* they teach about the US in Canadian schools? I figured a big scandal like that would have at least been mentioned, given your proximity to the US. Then again, I remember learning little-to-nothing about Canadian political history here in the US, but I always just chalked that up to the US being self-obsessed and literally only teaching world history as far as it relates to the eventual conception and subsequent involvement of our country. Like, history in the US, at least at my school, was pretty much framed as our country's origin story. Do Canadian schools actually take the same approach regarding your own country?
I'm out after 5 minutes. This is just more proof that people who lean into the zoomer label are insufferable. Stop conforming to a what you feel fate has set out for you and forge your own path. Be Solid not Liquid.
I say that Snake as a character still hits close to home even today. I did a short video on an aspect of Snake’s character and how it ties to the player.
Great video! I'll love this game until I'm dead. Metal Gear Solid 2 is easily better, but you definitely need to play the first one to understand it properly, and even then it's pretty hard lol
Great video, Papi! MGS is one of my favorite series of all time, and I highly suggest you give them all a shot! Fair warning that MGS2 has even more codec, though! If you think this story is weird... you're in for a ride!
The reason why this game is so much better than most modern games is because the game has a bunch of variety and surprise. Today the problem is the likes of Ubisoft open world titles and similar others think that for gameplay doing the same mundane task over and over 100 times is worth my time. In Metal Gear Solid you never knew exactly what was around the corner and what strategy might work. You had to figure out what equipment you had that would help you and use it well. One minute you could be firing remote control missiles, the next sniping, using C4 to blow through hidden walls, rappelling down towers, run and gun on stairways, shooting missiles at helicopters, hand to hand fighting, dodging flying paintings, resisting torture, chasing rats that ate keycards, trying to convince wolves you were not worth biting, grenading tanks, escaping prison with ketchup, and so on. The variety is nuts and massively beyond even modern huge budget games where you go to point A, talk to character B, and then go to point C interspersed with same type of combat on the way, every time. MGS is a short game, arguably there is too many cut scenes but ultimately it is worth every minute you spend with it. Not something I can say of many games today.
Ok I just found your channel, and sorta know you on twitch. I a millennial here am surprised when someone is playing mgs!! Mgs is one of my favorite series, can’t wait for you to get through the other ones; but please for the love all that is holy DO NOT PLAY SURVIVE!!!! Survive is not canon, and even if it was; I’d not consider it canon as it was never made or overseen even a little bit by kogima!!! MGR was overseen by kogima!! I loved the codec calls, because it added to the story; and at times the craziness/funny moments. It really helped a lot, and made me love the games even more. Also I’m a historian/history major, so even when there is some true history within the fiction of the game; there is so many parts that got me hooked!!
Wow, this video was so well made. I played the game when I was 10 years old, now I´m 33. I love when younger people get to experiences older games in the same way I played Atari classics. It keeps the perspective on the gaming industry fresh and interesting.
yes! i'm going to make an attempt at getting a review video out monthly this year :) i know it's been a minute but i got one in the works now! its not mgs2 yet tho!
As someone who grew up with a gamer dad who played action shooter, I was soo into this game as a kid, and at the time no other games noting was this rad and mature. not going to lie about how bone chilling it was for Psychomantis reading my memory card. now I want to see your reaction to MGS2 if you think MGS1 is bizarre. I wont spoil it but, The last conversation of MGS2 still haunts me even more now that I feel like Hido was trying to also give us a warning about the "entities" in the last convocation.
Nit gonna go after them for being a Zoomer. However, I will say they obviously can't pay enough attention to the plot to understand anything that's going on. Just wants to focus playing the game rather then plot. And so much goes over their head, it's hilarious
splicing live stream reaction with review is a thing more people should do. i mightve missed it and i hope its not rude but how old is RottenPapi? i just want to know how much of a fossil i am
So much fun watching this! Please please do more of these, as someone who grew up on these games (damn that makes me feel old haha) it's fun to see a fresh perspective.
I love your perspective on MGS! Old school MGS fans (like myself, I'm 34 and played these on release) can be very critical of newbs, but I enjoyed your take on it and you made me laugh a lot! HOWEVER! Maybe it's been pointed out already, but Sniper Wolf is not Russian. She's Kurdish. Massive difference!!! That's all. I do look forward to seeing if you've played anymore games from my era and to get a different perspective.
Nice review loved your outfit and the refreshing takes on the series but its interesting how you disliked meryl yet liked sniper wolf despite the latter being much more of a "cool girl".
born in 2004. been playing the franchise for about a month now. played mgs1 for 30 hours before moving on to mgs2, with which im almost done rn. saying an entire generation has attention span issues is a bit silly, considering the fact that a selected lot of all 3 past generations (millenials, z, alpha) have had attention span issues.
I'm so glad I go against Psycho Mantis on PS1, He shake my controller, read Memory Card, Fade to Black Monitor, and let me play on the 2nd Controller. Really nice experience
@@RottenPapi I mean it's bad, but in a good way. A couple more suggestions you might have a laugh playing, Incredible crisis and Hyper Bishi Bashi are loads of fun. Anyways, keep the videos coming, super enjoyable.

No sir, sadly she did not mention the "Super Baby Method" line, I agree sir, very disappointing.
No, I don't believe so..... I think given the circumstances we can give her a pass for disliking Meryl
Correct sir, she did enjoy Otacon... Yes Sir, I know, a clear stand in character for yourself
There is no way to know if she will continue the series sir, however I think some pressure can be applied...
Yes sir, we will keep her under surveillance...yes and her cat too...
Yes, sir...., Yes. Thank you and good bye...Kojima San *boom*
I'd love to see you play the others. I'm replaying them all right now and if you hate long conversations and cutscenes......
It comes right before the big game "The Phantom Pain"
cant believe i missed these streams
link to the vods in the description! 💖
@@RottenPapi are you gonna play the other mainline games???
MGS is one of the best video games ever produced.
always interesting to see someone's perspective post first playthrough , good job on the video also s/o to your editor!
Dude, upload the videos of you playing threw it! Also, Deepthroat was the informant from the Watergate cover up. They say it right in the game as well.
Papi has blessed us w fresh content
Overall I just think it's the weakest part of the series with some high highs but also realy low lows.
That teaser is gold 🤣
TH-cam just recommended this video to me haha. This video is really well done! I’m also a fellow zoomer who recently finished playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time, and I’m currently playing through the series for the first time on my channel. I’m seeing a resurgence with the MGS series recently and I’m happy to see I’m not the only one experiencing these games for the first time.
You know, Metal Gear doesn't use cutscenes the way other games do. Having a sensible balance between cutscene and gameplay... I've always despised that kind of game!
I love this style of video! As someone who's never played metal gear, it's an awesome recap!
im like 16 y/o and this game is like my favorite. my only gripe about the game is that it uses set camera locations
Love this more of these please!!
Jak and Dax next month 😈
That pun was so bad that it woke your cat up . Great job , and entertaining. 💯👊
Great review, are you planning on reviewing the rest of the series?
I'm out after 5 minutes. This is just more proof that people who lean into the zoomer label are insufferable. Stop conforming to a what you feel fate has set out for you and forge your own path. Be Solid not Liquid.
tfw you take youtube video titles too seriously and let it make you angry
Maybe shallow games are more your speed.
I say that Snake as a character still hits close to home even today. I did a short video on an aspect of Snake’s character and how it ties to the player.
Great video! I'll love this game until I'm dead. Metal Gear Solid 2 is easily better, but you definitely need to play the first one to understand it properly, and even then it's pretty hard lol
i'll try my best 🫡
Keep these coming! Quality content 👍
Great video, Papi! MGS is one of my favorite series of all time, and I highly suggest you give them all a shot! Fair warning that MGS2 has even more codec, though!
If you think this story is weird... you're in for a ride!
MGS2 plot basically explained what we are living today in social media
Awesome that you liked it! I just beat MGS 1,2 and 3 again for like 3rd time. Subbed and hope to see your reaction to the other games!
Nice review. I personally love Metal Gear. Though I think there is one thing to clarify here. Sniper Wolf isn't Russian. She is Kurdish.
Really great review. I hope you'll review the other mgs games
I plan on it!
Wow, this video was so well made. I played the game when I was 10 years old, now I´m 33.
I love when younger people get to experiences older games in the same way I played Atari classics. It keeps the perspective on the gaming industry fresh and interesting.
This was insightful. I can only see 4 video's uploaded. Are there any more or is this the end? Was hoping to see a similar critical review on MGS2.
yes! i'm going to make an attempt at getting a review video out monthly this year :) i know it's been a minute but i got one in the works now! its not mgs2 yet tho!
@@RottenPapi Looking forward to it. One thing I need to add is that MGS1 isn't 'banana bonkers' for the sake of it. MGS2 will explain why.
Pappy you are on a roll with these! Great videos!
Loving this channel and videos, hope you keep them coming, they are a blast to watch as a millenial gamer
I hope you do one about MGS 2!
if only MGS 3 was available right now in digital stores
:)
Good review 👍
Of course she has ADHD. Is there any zoomer that doesn't. Probably 20% gay too.
This was great, well done 🙌
Nit gonna go after them for being a Zoomer. However, I will say they obviously can't pay enough attention to the plot to understand anything that's going on. Just wants to focus playing the game rather then plot. And so much goes over their head, it's hilarious
splicing live stream reaction with review is a thing more people should do. i mightve missed it and i hope its not rude but how old is RottenPapi? i just want to know how much of a fossil i am
So much fun watching this! Please please do more of these, as someone who grew up on these games (damn that makes me feel old haha) it's fun to see a fresh perspective.
Great vid, I thought you were going to ish all over it but was pleasantly surprised.
That's all. I do look forward to seeing if you've played anymore games from my era and to get a different perspective.
oh i didn't know that! in the stuff i read it said russian. i'll be more careful about fact checking that kind of thing next time! thank you!
my stupid ADD brain can't look away from the cat in the background
Nice review loved your outfit and the refreshing takes on the series but its interesting how you disliked meryl yet liked sniper wolf despite the latter being much more of a "cool girl".
The meager attention span of the common zoomer is put to the test in this kind of game. Y'all can't sit still and pay attention for long enough.
born in 2004. been playing the franchise for about a month now. played mgs1 for 30 hours before moving on to mgs2, with which im almost done rn. saying an entire generation has attention span issues is a bit silly, considering the fact that a selected lot of all 3 past generations (millenials, z, alpha) have had attention span issues.
i have adhd :/ unfortunately i'm not a good zoomer to point to for attention span hahaha
I hope you continue playing the rest of the series.
9:29 Sniper Wolf is not russian.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the Miller reveal in the Spoiler section of your review...!
Absolutely love the papi game reviews we need more
Sniper Wolf is not Russian she is Kurdish
I'm so glad I go against Psycho Mantis on PS1, He shake my controller, read Memory Card, Fade to Black Monitor, and let me play on the 2nd Controller. Really nice experience
Great job!
Just watched all your videos, excellent quality and funny.
How about playing Syphon Filter some time?
Thanks so much! I've never heard of that game but i'd definitely consider it!
@@RottenPapi I mean it's bad, but in a good way.
A couple more suggestions you might have a laugh playing, Incredible crisis and Hyper Bishi Bashi are loads of fun.
Anyways, keep the videos coming, super enjoyable.
This was absolutely brilliant again papi. I'm a big fan of Kojima and this was so well researched :)
Thanks so much!!
if you don't think MGS deserves it's hype then you are the problem
