I have yet to find a game that fills me with the same kind of wonder I felt while exploring the landscapes of Jak and Daxter for the first time back in the early 2000's. The art and sound design, the geography, even the flora and fauna are so original and unique. The ability to see far away areas off in the distance that you would actually be able to reach later in the game was so cool at the time. People are still uncovering secrets in this game. In recent years a secret level was found in the code of an early promotional version of the game and has been mostly rebuilt by fans. A developers cheat menu was also found in the final version of the game by pressing a specific combination of buttons, and another button combo unlocks a harder mode of the fish mini-game. This stuff was completely unknown for over 2 decades before it was found.

How do you get all the citadel power cells if you activated the citadel skip glitch?? I'm stuck after accidentally activating it and I really don't want to start my 100% run from scratch 😭

I played this game for the first time like 3 months ago and I was lucky enough to have all the OG hardware (ps1, CRT TV). In my opinion, this game is absolutely worth buying an old PS1 and old TV to experience the old school vibes. If you really like it, you’ll probably purchase a PS3 to play MGS4 after that like I did haha.

I just found this channel because I love the game series. The vibe is really fun here.

I got a ps2 for an early birthday gift, when you went to the shops to buy it they let you pick 3 games from a list of 18 or so to go with it. jak and daxter was on that list and definitely one of the cooler ones. It took me and my sister weeks to beat the fishing minigame. we had a tonne of racing games so the ring minigame wasnt too bad you needed to make the ears way longer for the cosplay, these arent elves they are rat earred freaks

I remember going to my cousin’s house for Thanksgiving in 1998. Didn’t own a PlayStation at the time, only a N64 and thought spy games were only like Goldeneye 64. I remember playing the intro and the dock scene before we left his house to go home. I don’t know why, but the music in that scene just stuck with me the whole ride home. Felt so epic. I remember getting a PlayStation soon after and this game was my first game. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Felt like you were playing the best action movie of all time, in video game form. Judging by the amount of people who have remade certain scenes of this game with modern technology, I would say that I am far from the only one that this game struck a deeply personal cord with. I’m so blessed to have this game be there for my rise through childhood.

There is an undeniable charm to this game. I hope you play Jak 2 and 3 also at some point. Jak 2 is one of my favorites and because of the OpenGOAL Jak-project, they are looking and running better than ever.

Seems like you and I made opposite compromises! You used save states and rewinds but went totally mapless, whereas I used a map but didn't savescum at all. More specifically I used the map from The Official Nintendo Player's Guide from 1987, for additional authenticity. Made it a bit harder to see some spots, and there were some weird mistranslations in the text on the map, but for the most part it was extremely helpful without feeling tooooo cheaty. But maybe I ought to go for a mapless run some day, lol...

Metroid is designed to make you rage quit...after 2 hours. I'm currently finishing up my first playthrough of Zero Mission. Thats definitely more a remake/remaster than Super. Edit- Kraid in my experience is always tougher than Ridley. In the original, Super, and Zero Mission I beat Ridley on my first try, and in Fusion took two tried just because i played stupidly, and Kraid isn't in Fusion.

Yeah, watching this makes me not regret playing a romhack that smoothed out some of the clunk. Afterall this was, for whatever reason, the LAST Metroid I played, likely due to clunk-phobia. Also great to see you back after so long, expected Jak II but instead I got videos II- Er, 2 videos, and that's awesome!

I love the original Tomb Raider trilogy. I grew up with TR3 in particular. It was really interesting to get a newcomers / modern gamer's perspective of this, and I like how you dove a bit into the game design and intentions. Really cool video and really fun to watch! Would love to see you trying more TR games. While I appreciate modern gamers aren't used to sparse save points, I personally think it adds to the experience and is a good design for this particular game (just like I think it works in newer games like Alien: Isolation). Early TR games are about adventure, observation skills and precision. The grid-pattern levels help you plan out your moves and if you miss a jump it's because you weren't precise enough rather than for example, in some modern games, where you're relying on the character to auto-grab a ledge but sometimes it's glitchy. With fewer save points, each action feels like a higher risk and so you tread carefully, adding to the adventure/survival feel of the game as well as adding to the tension and the need to observe/plan well. Also I would only agree that the hazards can be unpredictable / unfair / you wouldn't pass it first time, when it comes to TR3. TR3 is notoriously difficult and unless you knew what was coming beforehand you'll most likely die on the first attempt which can feel a bit unfair. But in TR1 and TR2, I feel that at least mostly you can get past hazards first time with observational skills, planning and good execution. E.g. that last gameplay clip in your video where Lara falls down the hole, you can literally see both of those trapdoor hazards ahead by standing at the edge and using the look button. (although the opening level to TR2 is definitely the hardest opening level in the original 3 games) I think these original TR games are just slower paced than modern gamers are used to.
