Wow, thank you so much. I realize that if you've used photoshop but are not used to using new tools, you MUST find a tutorial that is updated due to the updates of the program. I was trying to follow along with a program that was posted in a video in 2011. That didn't work for me then I searched 2015 tutorials and of course I didn't notice until the very end that we were using the exact same version of photoshop. This was super helpful.

my brush tool does nothing when i brush over, is it supposed to delete the parts of the overlapping image? im not sure how to fix it exactly.

Sadly any selfie camera app can now do this automatically. People are driven away and away from learning photoshop nowadays
There are many apps that can do a few of PS effects and smoothing skin is one of them. However, PS is still the best out there because of its incredible versatility, flexibility and depth. Just my opinion.
Awesome tutorial. I had just one thought you could mention. When you go to the alpha channel created and use the brush to bring back the eye brows, eyes, lips etc. Make sure to turn your brush to the color black and not white. By default, seems to stay white. If you don't then you are just brushing white over white. I know it may be obvious to many, but just thought I'd put it out there. Thank you again.

Hi I was trying to follow this and when I get to the brush tool bit it does not appear to change anything in photoshop. I selected the layer mask on the right as in your video and set the brush settings as you did but when I start to apply to the image nothing happens? If i click the image on the left of layer it paints black on the image. Any ideas?
I chose eraser instead and I'm thinking it might have worked.

change the brush mode to subtract instead of normal and it should work.

OK, very easy and fast way to smooth out skin and remove blemishes, but professionally I think it is better to use Frequency Separation.

The only thing I don't understand is you are saying to click the layer mask and then brush the eyebrows etc, that we don't want blurred. When I use the brush, it adds to the mask, instead of removing it.

2:15 my brush wouldnt remove the smoothness from the parts i marked with the brush why? i couldnt see a my "face mask" on the right lose holes i did the same steps until 3:00 im using CS6

Great video. Came across somebody's instagram where they keep making claims about not using makeup. As a photographer, not as somebody putting up pictures of themselves. Retouching is something I already knew he did, but seeing how this plain photo was done makes the claims of greatness crumble even more.

I alway spot out imperfections with the spot healing brush. Never thought of doing it this way!
If I already did a picture of it had to do the lighting, I can still make another layer and try to smooth out any blemishes in the face, right

I did not find refine edge in my select drop down
Adobe replaced Refine Edge with "Select and Mask". If you'd rather use Refine Edge, Shift-click "Select and Mask".

Hello, i'm using cc 2017 and the actions you are doing in 2:40 is not working for me. i tried to put the surface blur all the way up to see if the directions at 2:40 will take the blur out of the eyes and lips but it is not working. please help thanks!
