- Photoshop CC 2015 tutorial showing possibly the best technique to retouch skin in a photo. “Frequency Separation” retains the skin’s texture, while it removes blotches and imperfections. The result is flawless, realistic-looking skin without that “plastic”, overworked look.

Hands down you are the BEST instructor out there. Clear, easy to follow, simple and no fuss videos.
BRO!!! 7 mins worth of a quality tutorial. No fluff, no shirt, just straight facts. Appreciate this so much. Keep doin ya thing, Marty! CHEEEEEEEEE!
The best youtube tutorial I've ever seen. Simple, precisely direct to the point. Suitable for a beginner like me. So loving your videos!!!
Nice, slow, simple, straight to the point without seven minutes of talking before starting the work. Love it.
7 years, still works like a charm
The best Photoshop tutorial I ever seen on TH-cam thanks blue lightning TV 👍👍👍
True mastery comes when you can explain something complicated simply. Marty's a master. Thanks!
This is without a doubt the best Frequency Separation tutorial I've seen yet. I've watched many others but not nearly as good as this one. Easy to follow.
Bruce Morin that’s right !
I have watched tons of vids for photoshop and none of them shows shortcut keys and details methods like your video.
Thank you, Sir!
perhaps the best tutorial on skin in the last week when I was looking into 100 s of videos.thx
This is no longer working for me. Worked perfect a month ago. Somewhere between 2:38-2:43 a step is missing. The frequency texture is once visible and then hidden within that 5 second time frame. Am I missing something?
i almost got mad that you were talking to me like i was 4, then i realized how much better I now am at retouching. thanks. this is how more tutorials should be
Thanks!
Blue Lightning TV Photoshop no problem. This has been super helpful
Process showed at a slow pace, which is good to understand and audio and accent very clear and audible. Fantastic Tutorial.
Never seen anything more informative and simple than this. however seeing more videos of same method does help understand whats actually going on.
Marty this was by far the Easiest walk through in photoshop I’ve ever watched . Thank you so much
This is probably the most thorough and easy to understand tutorial for Photoshop that I have ever watched. Every other one assumes you know PS well and know all the commands and controls. Thank you for being so helpful! Your teaching and instruction is very clear and concise, easy to follow.
Clear, Objective, Understandable, this guy deserve a medal
Thanks! Please "spread the word". 👍
That was a much simpler set of instructions that I've seen before. Nicely done, easily understandable .
REALLY REALLY, ITS FLAWLESS!!!!! ITS SO CLEAR TO UNDERSTAND SPECIALLY FOR BEGINNERS. THANKS A LOT & KEEP IT UP PLEASE.
I know it's not enough to say these words "THANK YOU"! You made every photographers dream! less complex and on point!
I have watched alot of tutorials. This is the best. U really have the skill in teaching. Thank you so much.
My Gosh !!! finally someone that really knows he's stuff and really breaks its down in a quick video . I can't recall how many times i've watched other photography tutorials that are 20 mins long and still get lost lol Thanks alot!!
One of the best retouching videos with ease. I use it all the time! xx
Best method hands down. Seriously. I’ve watched many tutorials of frequency separation from many top TH-cam photographers! But I still couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. Or would always have some discoloration or look messy. And I was so close to giving up using frequency separation. Until this came up on my recommendation. And I figured I’d give it one more go. And this has been hands down the easiest , and fastest method to use frequency separation! Thank you so much. I am super happy with the results! Finally!
Thanks, Jessie! Glad you didn't give up! 👍
Can you do an updated version for Photoshop 2020 😩
One of the best, as well as concise in length, frequency separation tutorials I have ever watched.
Best, helpful video EVER! Straight to the point. Using current photoshop, clear step by step. Thank you!! I can’t wait to apply what I’ve just learned.
Really awesome tutorial. Very professional and straight to the point. Thank you so much
Where have you been all my life ?
The best video I found on the process of frequency separation! Very easy to follow with clear and easy instructions. I definitely loo forward to watching more videos from you. Thank you.
OMG I’ve been trying to learn this for months and with this video I finally was able to complete the photo correctly!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Glad it helped!

This is legit the best D&B tutorial I've seen
I come back to this video over and over again! Love it
Amazing Tutorial, Fast and Helpful
FINALLY A PROFESSIONAL ! THANK YOU
great tutorial , I love the fact that it goes straight to the point, very precise and concise, thank you, thank you!!!
This is way better than the method I was using before. Amazing tutorial!
This method is for 8 bit photos. When using 16 bit photos you want to set the blending mode to "add", the offset to 0, and check the invert box.
how come? What's the difference?
@@angelcuadras450 8 bit vs 16 bit photo quality, im taking a Udemy course and the instructor specifically said this.
@@Tyme ah okay I’ll make sure to remember this thank you
I found my new favorite editing technique. Thank you so much
Great to hear!
this has been saving me with terrible baby photos FOR YEARS. SINCE I STARTED PHOTOGRAPHY. THANK YOU.
STEP BY STEP! I love this. THANK YOU
Amazing video! This is a really good quality tutorial I understood perfectly, keep going with the good work :) new subscriber btw
Could you please please pleaaasseee do an updated version with Photoshop CC 2018 ?? 🙏🙏 Thank you great video!
This works on CC 2018, as well. Use "Select and Mask" instead of "Refine Edge" or Shift-click "Select and Mask" to open "Refine Edge".
I cant figure it out either but im very new.
You was a great help, I can definitely see now how my pictures changed - Thank you !
I use this all the time, thanks alot
This is the best video! I've been using it for years! Thanks a lot!
Great to hear!
Thank for this great tutorial
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Clear explanations, concise, and effective!
Wow. This is the best and fastest retouching tutorial i've seen in a while. Love it!
Thanks blue lighting tv :) your tutorial just Awesome...your speak slowly and all menu feature you show to us how to use all tools .
1. at 2:36 the High Frequency layer is On but few second later at 2:43 the eyeball icon is off. The author says nothing about that. The problem is that if you make the top layer invisible like in the video then our picture becomes blurred as we applied gaussian blur in the very beginning
2. This just doesn't work for me for some reason! Whatched this over 3 times! Please help!
same here
It should be on
About to try now! Thank you!
Good, straightforward video. Have to say part of my appreciation for the straightforward approach comes from hearing so many photographers congratulate themselves for "creating magic" when all they're doing is photoshopping a reasonably attractive girl just standing there.
Man..this is the best tutorial to work with skin. Thank you A LOT. Is there any video to explain what were we doing when we do the part of "subtract"? Because I'm only following your instructions, but I don't know what I'm doing. I would like to understand the logic of the process. Sorry for being so stupid (lol) and once again, THANK YOU A LOT Man. You smashed it.
Thanks
this was amazing! used it to retouch my grad photos! Looks so much better and more natural than another method i was trying :)
Thanks Marty.
U made this easy for us to understand. Thanks again keep up the good work.
Hey @BlueLight tv photoshop Can you do this exactly same Tutorial using the new Photoshop CC 2018 ?? please please and thank you it will help a lot
Marius Kisss of course you. None of the necessary functions have changed.
best tutorial. thnks
Awesome! Thank you. I was working on a picture that was taken outside in the cold. Other methods I tried, were just not working to get the blotchy redness out. This worked great.
Great tutorial. Clear instructions and demonstration, with no unnecessary waffle. Thank you
You are welcome!
you are a star!
The way you instruct is magnificent! Understandable, thorough and at a perfect pace. Others can learn a lot from your delivery! Thanks so much!
My man! You NAILED it! Thanks. Subscribed.
For me you are the best teacher. thank you for understanding peoples requirement. I have very poor knowledge to understand English. but I found your accent is very clear to understand. thanks for this tutorial.
The BEST tutorial! After watching videos that are 30 minutes long or more 🙄, this one is straight to the point.
Thanks!
Why do i get a grey skin after i apply gaussin blur with the lasso tool? I did everything exactly as it is in the video.
Thank you, I thought I'm the only one. Same problem here, can anybody help out please?
Wow! You made it so simple! Many hours of time now saved
I've used frequency separation before but your method has saved me HOURS! Thank you.
THE BEST FREQUENCY SEPARATION TUTORIAL!! This tutorial is very clear simple and to the point: THANK YOU BLUE LIGHTITNG!!
Great!
This is so helpful, I’m beginner in this. The way you explained 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
This is one of the best retouching skill I've ever seen, it will go a long way in my memory, thanks guys.
Ok I am stuck at the blur part like a lot of the people in the comments "Hello" can someone help... I rewinded to the video multiple times and it shows the HIGH layer active then its not..... CONFUSED
Very cool and precise video
A wonderful tutorial, thanks for taking time and doing it slowly :)
best turorial by far
that is the best looking fahrid i've ever seen
😉
This is one of the best explanations I have seen in a long while. so easy to follow and understand
Truly amazing, thank you so much for this Marty!
This remains the best skin retouching tutorial I have come across. Thanks for the video!
why your hig freq is unselected when you do the selection and the low is not blur anymore! i dont get it!
so true..dont understand
when doing the gaussian blur on the fore head for cleaning, it doesnt function on that part.. help me out pls
Very very good! there are so many skin retouching video, but this is the best one. This Tutorial clearly stated the details during the FS, especially, the way how to use each key and the shortcut on the keyboard, slowly and clearly. Great teacher!! thanks!
I really like your tutorials, so easy to pick up and apply
2:39 did you cut off few steps from here? The top layer is somehow hidden and inactived, and since the middle layer is Low Freq Blur how do you get a clear image and keep on going with Lasso tool?
same question too, I was looking for my error and I noticed that after the selection of lasso tool. Top layer was inactive still second layer in video was clear image
This is actually the best and the shortest, i learnt from this in no time
Very good explanation. Thank you.
This photoshop tutorial is now iconic
Well, I followed this video step by step until about 4 minutes into the tutorial. First, I don't seem to have the "Refine Edge" option in my version of Photoshop (Creative Cloud). I found a select and mask tool that appears to allow for the same basic features as the "Refine Edge". When I tried to apply the Gaussian Blur tool at 4 minutes into the video, it didn't make the skin imperfections go away. In fact, it seemed to make them more harsh, and as I pushed the slider to the right it just made the face look darker in color. I'm guessing some small step is missing that makes all of the difference here? Regardless, I couldn't find it.
SAME!
same here:(
go to select > select and mask.... then you would see a setting box similar to the Refine and Edge window.
Regarding the "Refine Edge" issue, this is because you have a more recent version of photoshop CC and they replaced it with the new "select and mask..". However there's a way to get the old one as shown in this video. To get it : once you have drawn your selection with the lasso tool, go to the top menu in photoshop > "select" > then hold the SHIFT key and click on "Select and Mask...". The fact that you press shift will bring back the old menu (dont know how long they will keep it that way though).
Regarding the darker issue : I have the same issue, and I've read somewhere this is due to too much initial blur on the low pass filter, but not sure about it. I recreated it with less blur, and it seems almost ok if I do not apply too much blur on the selected areas afterwards, but if I push too much to the right it keeps getting darker :-/..
This is one of the best video I have seen on frequency separation , thank you !
The easiest tutorial! Thank you so much!
This just saved my life.. thank you so very much
I've followed the steps religiously, and double checked. Once I get to the step at 2:42, on my image, when I select using the lasso tool and apply a gaussian blur, the selection does not blur, it just gets darker
same. I think it only works if the person has patches/pimples. for regular skin, this method is useless. try using refine mask for smoothing the skin from the pores. much simpler and faster imo.
me too
me too
Saame.
I appear to be having trouble replicating what you're doing? It's on the step where you type in the feather amount, then draw the lasso round the forehead and then gausian blur it.. (when i guasian blur, it doesn't blur the spots etc. the image looks the same no matter what strength i try? am i missing something)
same i faced...
This is the best tutorial. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for your video. It was very instructive. I have learned a lot as I am fairly new to Photoshop
When i want to apply the blurr the skin (my selection) only gets darker... Help please!
Same here!
Try less of a blur and only select parts that are roughly the same brightness/contrast level
I have the same issue but using the latest PS in 2021. Must be different settings
