Make sure selecting mask while painting
Check that the hardness of the brush is not 0 (zero)
What do you mean the brush is not working?
Make sure that the color of the brush is white
Remember white reviles and black conceals
@@fremworks the same thing happens for me too. The brush does nothing to th image.
Every tutorial I watch on how to smooth skin like this does the same thing - the brush doesn’t work in the end

this worked for one image and for another image with the same lighting the first round of freq separation is creating intense noise around my brush strokes even though im following the same directions.. my subject is a family portrait. Maybe the lighting highlights and shadows are too different\intense? help
Question sir: How did you change the layer mask from white to black?
Select Layer Mask and Press (CTRL+I) to Invert the layer mask.

@thomaslong I Disagree. Sometimes peoples skin requires a more aggressive re-touch. This is it. Majority of people I wouldn't use this on but some people with bad acne require something like this (potentially lower opacity or strictly kept to the problem areas). however for acne cases if you have a better method. I would love to hear it or better yet see your video

I would like to try this technique. But every time when i try to merge the two copy layers to one layers. It also adds my orginal background layer in one combined layer. I do every thing you say, but it doesn't work. You keep your orginal background layer and I don't. What's wrong?
