This seems like very polite applause and a few enthusiastic cheers compared to the absolute cacophony of ecstatic screams of joy and wild gesticulations I recall from the audience I was in on Opening Day in 1983. We were literally hollering at Vader to “DO SOMETHING!!!!” before he actually did, at which point it was like 1,000 simultaneous nerd orgasms, followed by tears. I’m not joking, either, it was a very passionate, moving experience for a lot of us who’d been waiting three years to see it. We went berserk.

Palpatine spent so much time working on corrupting Anakin Skywalker. But after all the years of having Vader as his attack dog, broken, twisted, and mutilated, THIS is where he made his biggest mistake. Palpatine forgot what it was that got him Anakin Skywalker in the first place: his desperate need to protect his loved ones from dying. If Palpatine had remembered this, he perhaps wouldn’t have dared to kill Luke. Anakin/Vader knows what love is. Palpatine has never known love in his life.
