  • Check out 4:00 !
Momo has been dealing with food allergies from 1/2020- 5/2020. 5 whole months!! Through it, we've gone through antibiotics and steroids 3 TIMES. It was crazy and a painful experience for Momo and for me to watch. Finally I got allergy testing done and was able to switch to a home-cooked diet that is nutritionally balanced and will reduce any inflammation and reactions!
Hopefully my story will inspire you to think outside the box, and try something different for your pup. As always, I try to keep it budget-friendly and as cheap as possible. Let me know if you have any questions!

I'm glad you've found something that works for your dog. You are a very caring dog mama. My dog is 7 and it's been years of trial and error and loads of money spent to try to get his allergies under control. I was going to go to 100% homemade, but I was worried those expensive vitamins would just cause his allergies to explode again. I now do something similar to what you are doing, and it works. He's not 100% free of his allergy problems, but it's a lot better. I buy a vegan dog kibble, as it's the only one that doesn't make him itch, and he gets 1/4 cup morning and evening. The bulk of his food comes from my homemade vegan dog food, and from some raw meat whole-prey patties that I buy from our local pet food store. My vet has been so impressed with how his coat feels now and how much healthier he looks. She's been super supportive of what we are doing. She suggested I add canned sardines to his diet as well. I buy the no-salt added, canned in water and he gets that about once a week now too.

Also did the 5Strands testing for our adult dog, and this was a great place to start. Among several other things, our boy is also allergic to a lot of the additives in kibble. I believe it's not vitamins/ minerals they are allergic to, but the synthetic versions of these which are present in nearly every kibble-based food. They have to replace the whole food vitamins/ minerals that are lost due the high processing of the food. Hope this helps. Thank you for making this helpful post!

Thank you for making this video. I think you did a pretty good job at explaining the issue. My yorkieshire terrier was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease about 4 years ago. I have struggled horribly with the elimination diet. He is on prednisone, probiotics and a home cooked diet. I cook the chicken in a pressure cooker and it makes a nice broth too. Anyway, my poor pup has been flaring up, vomiting, loose stools and not eating. I, like you, was going through the same cycle at the vets every 2-3 months and now the flare ups are happening within weeks of each other. Anyway, I too, had heard these allergy tests are not so accurate but felt like I needed a starting point. I just ordered a test this evening. I am hopeful after watching your video as it seemed to be helpful to you and momo. I really want to find the root cause of his allergies so I can get him off the steroids. Mostly I want him to have a good quality life

They all started getting ear infections yeast infections and bacterial infections about the same time in january. I have always their whole life had them on Kirkland salmon and sweet potato. If you can get a hold of Kirkland's previous ingredients before they went to the 35 lb bags, they had completely different ingredients and now it is causing reactions in every one of these animals. They changed the recipe and not for the better. If that helps anybody at all

It's called hydrolyzed protein food. The protein is broken down by process of hydrolysis. It breaks the protein down to the basic cells. The thought process is : your dog isn't allergic to chicken if they don't know the protein in from chicken. You can not hydrolyze proteins at home, not possible. Prescription needed for the dog food. It is not a long term diet. Only 6-10 weeks to reset your dogs system to then start from scratch with the elimination diet.

Good video, thanks, and Momo is beautiful. You obviously love him very much and also love and want to help people, so kudos to you. So many of us struggle with the same problem. You mentioned deboning the chicken. Dogs/wolves in the wild eat all the bones, as they have a huge need for calcium. The way to make the chicken bones safe is to cook them until they're virtually falling apart into powder, so he can't choke on them or get stabbed internally. You can do this with a pressure cooker or with a slow cooker. As far as I know this only works with chicken. If you don't want to cook the bones to powdery, or you're using a different meat source, then you can use eggshells pulverized in the blender to provide the calcium. That said, my dog (30 lbs. -- which raw bones depends on the size of the dog) eats a raw chicken drumstick, bones and all, every morning. I skin the chicken first using my needle-nose plyers because the skin contains too much fat, and too much fat can cause pancreatitis in some dogs, which is very dangerous (and expensive to get diagnosed). The bone chewing keeps her teeth pearly white, so avoids costly dental bills, and she loves the raw chicken. She gets supplemented kibbles for dinner. Anyone who wants to cook for their dog needs to do research first, as they need organ meat and calcium, the right amount of fat, and other things to be balanced. There are good videos on TH-cam about how to cook balanced meals for a dog. There are also good books on it in the library, even audiobooks. To complicate things further, dogs can be allergic to other things like grass, trees, house dust, fleas, etc. Finally, my vet put my dog on Apoquel and that cleared up all her skin issues practically overnight. It's an expensive pill but it's worth it, so folks might want to ask their vets if they can try it. I hope this helps someone, and I'm wondering if breeders should just stop breeding dogs that are prone to allergies.

Kibble and starch are inflammatory for allergies(rice, oatmeal, sweet potato). Pet Summit TH-cam just posted a fabulous video with all the Dr's. who are holistic. If you are specifically looking to learn about any allergies that your dog may have, then blood allergy testing is your only option, since allergies can’t be tested for using a hair sample. Though bioresonance hair testing can analyse a variety of different health markers such as food sensitivity, gut biome, nutritional deficiencies and metal toxicity.

May I add a suggestion? Try Dr. Andrew Jones on TH-cam or Google. He suggests holistic medicine for common, recurring ailments - not antibiotics or steroids, which tend to fix one problem but make another problem...yeast infections in other parts of the dog. At the same, use good sense as a pet owner, avoid steroids unless the circumstances are life or death, which would require those steroids & antibiotics. In my opinion, ears & bladder & skin issues are not life or death & I personally would not use steroids, unless I had no other alternative method available. With Dr. Andrew Jones' videos online, that is not the case fortunately. Hope you look him up! Wish you & your pet..only the best! ❤️

Nutritionist said do not use a crock pot or anything like that. It cooks too much and too long and actually kills the nutrients which totally makes sense. The less time cooking the more nutrients you keep.
I cook my protein in a fry pan til cooked most of the way, than put my uncooked veg and fruit in the food processor so it’s very fine than I add it into the fry pan and cook it only for a bit than I add tiny peices of cooked chicken which entices them to eat.
See the difference nothing is over cooked unlike a crock pot.
You also need a lot of ingredients for it to be balanced. My vet approved recipes have probably 12 ingredients.

I bought that same test for my dog last year for the same reason as you. My results came back very much like yours. 3+ pages of level 1-2-3 an together that would pretty well eliminate any store bought dog food because according to 5strands my dog is allergic to every single thing you find in every single bag of dog food in the store INCLUDING the limited diets/ingredients etc that like you said was too expensive for our size dogs (mine is 80lbs). I did cook chicken, carrots, potatoes, brown rice or white rice, plus eggs including the egg shells. Its just too time consuming making a large crock pot of this dividing it up into zip bags freezing half and feeding it to her daily. She maintained around 55-60lbs an was to me on the too skinny side. I gave up after a few months, now she is back on kibble and is itching like crazy and pulling her hair out by chewing but her weight is stable at 80lbs. Anyways, I've tried all dog food in store/online under the $60 mark, and I can not find one that A. she will eat cause if she don't like it she starves herself and b. if she will eat it she still is itchy and flares up ear itching & swelling. I'm not convinced tho that 5strands is accurate at all. Like you said, but i'd say less than 50% accurate cause I just find it hard to believe shes allergic to everything all meats and like you said, a lot of if not all vits minerals and what have you that is essentially needed for her to have good health. are you still feeding your dog this way or have you have found something better to do that helps? Sorry this is so long, I'm just broke girl trying to find a cost efficient way to help my itchy dog!

I’ve been feeding my American Bulldog Orijen for the last 3 months and it has helped him with the itching and also loose weight (Vet said he was too heavy at 120 lbs and he’s down to 115 lbs.). It is expensive food but I found that it’s nutrient dense so he’s not as hungry. With limited ingredient cheaper brands I was giving him more food but he was still hungry; since switching to Orijen he eats less so we went from 5-6 cups a day to 2 or 2.5 cups of kibble and doesn’t beg for more food. I’ve also increased his Fish oil intake and that has helped also.

Also dogs can't digest vegetables very well like us people so it's best to puree the veggies so there stomachs digest it easier. If u feed raw u don't have to remove the bone in the chicken because raw chicken bones are soft and actually great for there teeth.

If your dog is itchy and has scabs you can give him the same small antihistamine pills that people take with seasonal allergies, or skin allergies, that contain cetirizine and is found in drugs like Claritin or Zyrtec. Also, if the dog has excess gas and tummy aches and he is, for example, whining at night and you can't get to the vet at that moment, capsules that contain the active ingredient simethicone is a lifesaver. I give about 80 mg three times a day to my 25 kg dog when he eats something from outside and has an upset stomach. These drugs aren't like Ibuprofen, they are safe for dogs and are very hard to overdose.

@@cindyspence6811 At this point I feel like I must say that I am not a vet, but my dog is about 55 lbs and I give him one pill a day (half when he eats breakfast and half when he eats dinner).

This dose it what the vet recommended and I also noticed that my dog isn't as drowsy from this medication as other antihistamines, that are considered first generation drugs. I mentioned that I am not a vet just because I don't know if your dog might have some other health problems that would make Zyrtec dangerous to him. To be honest I can't think of any condition that make antihistamines dangerous, after all - they don't need prescriptions to buy.

Not sure how I feel about the allergy test. Being allergic to riboflavin? I've heard of riboflavin deficiency or enzyme deficiency, but I've never heard of riboflavin being the *cause* of the allergic state. Although an enzyme deficiency can have similar symptoms to an allergic reaction, I just feel like your dog would be an EXTREMELY rare case of being actually allergic to this vitamin. I'm not an expert though, i just hope that allergy test company isn't scamming people. $88 is a lot of money to some people.

My Service Dog has a lot of food/environment allergies. Tried the food elimination process but too so long I finally spent few thousand in Vet treatments and lastly allergy test. this TH-cam video by Homemade dogfood for a dog with allergies!
She also has food recipe for dogs with allergies. With my dog I was looking for a protein meat and organ meat blend with no grains, heavy filler of sweet potatoes since high starch levels in commercial dog foods give my dog, Bay, ear/paw yeast infections and skin irritations. Deer, wild boar and goat meat she does fine with, so I'm hoping to find a recipe of limited ingredients of organ meat: of beef heart/kidneys + pork? seems like commercial meats and produce grown with hormones and GMO don't do well for either her health nor mine with the allergy situation.

So basically save yourself the time, money and keep your dog's stress down by getting an allergy test ASAP. You might have to feed them homemade food + supplements.

If you start researching kibble and listening to the natural approach on you tube you will find that kibble is very bad for dogs. Even the way it is processed is carcinogenic.
It is NOT hard to make a balanced home made fresh food dog diet. On TH-cam alone there are quite a few ppl who say up front that their recipe IS VET APPROVED.
I have made these recipes and they are FULL of veg fruit and protein, more than what a human would even eat. On line there are also balanced recipes I’m sure. You can add a vit mix but I don’t know if you really need it if you are making a vet approved recipe balanced recipe.

*I know this is long but I pray everyone reads it for the sake of your babies.* 💔❤️
*You should never buy a dog food eith any animal meal. That's what gives animals cancer and makes them sick.*
The best food that I found that helped my dog that had a sensetive stomach, was Wild Earth. It's a vegetarian dry food. It's expensive and when everything went up, I had to change because I was also having to buy for 4 other dog's and 6 cat's.
But I would have definetly stayed with it, if I could. It's cheaper to order it straight from the company, and not through Chewy or Walmart.
Then when I changed, I done alot of resesrch and found Dr Pol was the best dry. It dorsn't have any animal meal and is made with the real meat. And it's made here in America. The only thing from china, is the vitamins. But they sourced them from reputable companies. I always buy Chicken because beef makrs them sick.
I bought the Beyond Salmon wet from Chewy to mix a 1/2 can in their food with a little water.
I got Dr Pol dry from Chewy too.
But the vegetarian is the best dry food out there. Especially since dog food companies, even expensive food puts something in their fo9d that kills dog's. And you will be surprised if you have never researched any of the recalls.
Beneful is the worst food you can feed your dog. Now why.......
First the meal is really really bad for your pets. It is the WHOLE ANIMAL ground up. Beaks, feathers and all. I found that out when I was using a cheap food because I didn't know any better. My 2 dogs threw up ALOT. But I didn't understand why until........ I would pick outvthe dog hair out of their bowl everyday from the food they didn't eat, it was just dry then. It was Kibbles N Bits. No one should ever buy it. Anyways, I was noticing pieces of feathers, and pieces of the nails and beaks, even bones. That's not the only food like that either.
But now, this is the really bad part. They use alot of different animals that is ground up. And they ground up, animals that have been euthenised. Any and ALL animal's from EVERYWHERE, including vets. The drugs they use is in the animals, which means it's in the food you feed your animals. That is responsible for a lot of dog deaths, sadly. And whatever disease they had, like cancer and other nasty diseases.
And lets not forget old and sick horses too. A horse would have alot of the euthanised drug in it.
Oh and yes, even other dog's. I had bought a wet can of food from the Family Dollar, Heartland brand, I believe, to hold me over and i saw something black in it. It turned out to be a piece of a dog's paw. I never bought anymore of it.
The pet food companies aren't regulated so they can get away with it.
Please research foods and sign up for recall emails.
And research why you shoud never buy dry food with any animal meal. I think one of the worst things from it is cancer.
That's why that vegetarian food is best. And it has everything they need. Also, it has the best "grains'. And not the one's that cause digestive issues.
Sorry this is so long but I pray it saves a precious baby.
*I do have one more warning to add. AND IT'S SERIOUS!!!*
*NEVER give your dog's Meloxidyl, it will kill them.* 😡😫💔😭
*It's an Nsaid for pain the vets use. They put my baby on it last summer because he got down in his back legs. A week later his stomach blew up and he didn't want to eat. It went on that way for a couple of weeks or so and my vet told me to up the dose. The vet i first saw told me to use it. I told both of them he had a sensetive stomach but they didn't listen. It was my fault for not demanding a regular pain med and not an Nsaid. My vet told me she thought he had a tumor and wanted to do surgery. This was on a Saturday. And she told me to bring him back on Monday and she would do it. He didn't make it. I was trying to get him to the truck and he collapsed just off the porch. It was a 100° outside. He was a big dog and I had to drag him back inside. Just inside the door and laid with him until he took his last breath 5-10 minutes later. I killed him. It caused him to bleed to death inside. And was in ALOT of pain becausr i failed him. And I know how much pain because that whole year i was dealing with the same pain from my stomach. Even so bad that I was in the hospital.*
*And I didn't know until that weekend that it kills dogs. I looked it up and watched videos on it. But it eas too late.*
*ALWAYS RESEARCH EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY EVERY MEDICINE THEY GIVE YOU FOR YOUR BABIES.*
It's killing me. He was everything to me and I let him down. I would have killed for him. It hurts so bad. I only have 2 dogs now. I would like to rescue old dog's from shelters but I just can't get there yet. It's still too much.
All of my animals are rescues and strays.
    *I'm Broken Inside.*
    💔😭

Sorry to hear I know feeding your doggie especially a large one is expensive. Turkey would be cheaper and probably less allergic than other poultry . My Daisy gets no kind of poultry and Kibble is pure garbage full of allergic ingredients. I detoxed her first on just veggies for a couple weeks. Use organic. Look at all those ingredients in that kibble garbage. I have extremely allergic doggie. She gets fresh cooked red sockeye salmon, sardines, veggies, Yam is great and absolutely no grains, Wyman's wild blueberries. Give your doggie Wild blueberries. Animals in the wild eat wild berries, fish.....
She gets chic peas instead of rice or any type grain. You can do your own vitamins and balance them pretty cheaply. Salmon has oil, I also supplement green mussel oil, cucumin, powdered mushroom extract, seaweed calcium, lemon balm, pro and pre biotics. She is bathed twice a week in beginning. Now she no longer has the Yeast smell. You can smell if your dog has yeast/bacterial/enviromental allergies.
The list on your dog kibble has way to many no no ingredients...hopefully someday you can toss kibble all together. It's nothing but full of garbage and if you don't eat it don't give it to your dog.
Daisy is doing great hair growing back and hot spots healed, yeast smell gone. She does itch a little after going outside. Paws are cleaned from thousands of yeast bacteria she can pick up and collect in one quick outdoor visit.
    Good luck

She also has not needed to see the vet for over a year and hopefully never goes back. They only know how to collect tests and then prescribe drugs that will eventually cause harm to your dogs life span and health.

You need to read the labels of EVERYTHING you give your pets.
You must educate yourself about what ingredients are harmful and not buy this. Food and treats too can be very unhealthy. Never buy anything including treats from China. They don’t have our standards and are not safe.
Even vets food can be very u healthy, check the label. Our vet gave us this very expensive canned food top pick for kidney stones and when we opened it it was disgusting full of chicken skin and junk it was horrible and cost a fortune. I took it back and got a refund it was garbage!! My dog was not supposed to have much protein, how was this food good for him?
I make vet approved fresh not over cooked recipes off of you tube, and they are full of goodness. Likely around 12 ingredients way better than what a human would eat. Don’t use crock pots etc they kill all the nutrients by cooking too long. I use a processor and grind small cuz the only chunks my two like are the small chunks of cooked chicken I put in at the end.
I make enough for about 5 days for two little dogs. I put their daily amount in baggies, I found out their proper amounts for their weight on line. It keeps about 3-5 days in the fridge and I pull the rest from the freezer as needed. It takes a bit of time yes but it’s about every 6 days so not a big deal, you make food 21 times a week for yourself cant you spare an hour once a week for your precious dog?
