The first 5-10 minutes are good, the middle is uncanny in a boring way, and some parts of the last 20 minutes are good, especially the bits with De Niro. I wish half of the allusions to more exciting things (e.g., the earning of medals in the war, the poisoning/gaslighting, the struggling as a lawyer of color) were integrated more centrally in the movie, and not merely mentioned in passing.

I thought it was a shame most of the scenes set in Amsterdam were interior scenes, it would have been nice to see a bit more of the city. I’m a history geek so I liked the period detail and historical background. I didn’t think it was that bad but it’s not a film I would watch again in a hurry. I preferred Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan in See How They Run, even though the Agatha Christie references went over my head.

the point of them being in "amsterdam" and i don't know why no one gets this, has nothing to do with actually being in Amsterdam. Amsterdam post war was unremarkable in every way, it was a reconstruction period. The point is that its somewhere else, its somewhere different that they felt encouraged them to be different people. A place where they felt unjudged by others (each character being extremely insecure in their own way but you have to think about it to realize that). No body really thinks deep about this film for some reason even though it has a deep message. The story is not at all "convoluted or messy" and if you're bored you're not paying attention

Based on looks alone it seems like he is trying for the Wes Anderson aesthetic. Edit: And I am obviously watching this video but haven't heard enough about the director except of the tantrum he had filming I Heart Huckabees? And Amy Adams singing "Dream A Little Dream of Me" while filming American Hustle I think to get over his tactics? I dunno but am looking forward to reading more information about him.

For me, I always separate the art and the artist. Was Picasso a good guy? No. Do I still appreciate his work? Yes I do. Many artists in history were in some way either assholes or just not good people at all, art gathers all different kinds of people and it's not all flowers and positivity vibes. I love Woody Allen movies for example but I do not like him as a person, and same goes for this guy. Moving on to the film itself, I saw it yesterday and I had so much fun, I loved the writing, the acting, the scenography and cinematography, it's all right up my alley. I think sometimes the critics and guys on youtube go all movie-bro on stuff like this, like just tell me Tarantino is your favorite director and move on. Sometimes it's not a good thing to overanalyze.

I loved it too, but I love performance/dialogue pushed movie. The dialogue of the characters was very similar to Silver Linings Playbook because everyone has their own goals clearly defined, and everyone is genuinely working towards a specific goal, contrasting them with eachother to show how happiness works.
That said, it's not an action packed thriller as much as it is a character study surrounding a whodunit. The "based on a true story" aspect of it made it more interesting

Fiction works best when each scene captures a particular emotion - a film is like a flow down a path of continuous emotion, one to the next in a flow of fun. I can't identify an emotion in one scene from this movie. It's like the director intentionally avoided embedding an emotional flow in every scene. I hated it.

Happens to many pop stars like Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, and yes even Harry Styles. If anything, Hollywood ruins a lot of these stars chances by giving them such huge roles to start their career, many aren’t ready unless they’re Cher or Lady Gaga who are queens.

I had high expectations due to the cast. But this was such a let down, extremely slow. There were around 40 people in the cinema, but at least 15 of them walked out! All different couples. I've never seen so many people walk out of a movie. I had the urge to leave, but kept watching, hoping it would improve. I just wanted to grab my phone and play some games or read the news, but than I realised I couldn't cause that's rude in the cinema with other people around. Really wasted 2,5 hours of my life for this one.

They went to see that weird movie in the cinema for a reason.

I won't say it doesn't matter what kind of person the artist is, but I will say there is no point bogging down a film review with personal assessments. If you hate the guy so bad, don't review his film at all. This comes off badly. Like an instance of "virtue signaling". Do the review or don't but we're not here to see whether or not you approve of the director's life choices.

Great video bro but you’ve focused entirely on the negatives here. We know that all movies have them. You seem too eager to criticise. When you related the movie to sleepwalking then maybe you watched it in the wrong brain state? I agree with you that the pacing is rather haphazard and also that the director is a POS, but in these days where more and more movies mishandle our attention, I thought this one greatly rewarded my commitment and I came away with a positive mindset and a fresh perspective. There’s so much to praise in Amsterdam yet I’m seeing so few people analysing the positives which I find strange as a movie lover.
I recommend another viewing without the intent throughout to write a review.
    Enjoy yourself my guy! Peace.
