Honestly this was a bad review about a great film. The main reason why is your statement "The storytelling becomes Obvious and Predictable... insulting to the audience...in the finale treating moviegoers as adults who need every aspect explained in glaringly straightforward detail." My problem with these statements is they made the story glaringly obvious for a reason, and people still don't get the point. It's not a simple whodunnit. It's exposing the corruption in the world, that we all are in great danger of becoming victims to, or many already have, with things like the opioid crisis & the housing crisis/economy collapsing. And the things that go on when people try to stop them. "The committee of the 5" or in the real world The Boys Clubs are the same groups of people, a small oligarchy connected to these crisis we have today. Happening in the exact same pattern and cycles. It's sort of a whistleblower film, the director is the whistleblower. Could be a reason why the film isn't doing so good. It's an amazing and bold story, that I think people should take more time to unpack.

I was at an advance screening last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I don't understand the negative criticisms from many critics. I don't find the story convoluted or clunky at all, the whole story made logical sense with good themes. The way the story pivots away from the 3 core cast to the greater conspiracy / military coup and social commentary - makes for a sensible flow and pacing to me. This movie wasn't made to make money, obviously. It was intended to convey to younger viewers "how we got here" in modern day America. It doesn't insult the audience, because most Americans are as stupid as the writers assume they are, and they don't know their history (because they aren't really interested in it). Time will tell if it fails, since its effectively intended to diffuse knowledge into the audience as it is replayed over time. Flashbacks can be done well. 6th sense famously did it well. And knives out did as well. In these cases the flashbacks are helping the audience recontextualize things along with one of the main characters to bring you to an understanding just as the audience does. But in Amsterdam the plot had been basically already spelled out for a good 20 minutes before the flashback scene. It is less like Knives out, and more akin to if they'd paused the castle invasion scene in Beauty and the beast for Gaston to say "you know, I've had a crush on belle and i got jealous so i rounded up the towns people to come here" (complete with flashbacks to scenes of him crushing on belle and the scene 5 minutes before where he started the song Kill the Beast). So by the time it gets to that scene it doesn't feel like some clever reveal. It feels more like. "Yeah... we know...that was literally what you spent the last 20 minutes telling us." So it is less the specific technique... and more the fact that that technique brought nothing new to the audience in this particular movie. At least in my opinion.

This is exactly how I felt, though I completed watching it to the end in hopes it ends well but it was so tiring and painful to continue watching. Reminded me of Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" both have good actors but terrible story line and directing.
@@96Samar96 I would watch once upon a Time in Hollywood 1000 times over before I would sit down for five minutes of this movie. After about an hour into it, I just gave up because I knew it was not getting better.
It’s quite surprising that Taylor Swift was cast in this film. Amsterdam (2022) has the potential to be further recognized as a genuine cinematic masterpiece. We have here Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, and so many others who have tremendous effort to really showcase what they’re capable of. This is a very informative review. We all look forward to more of these.
Perfect description of the inconsistencies in this film. Edited badly and strangely placed with the camera angles. It felt insincere and like I was watching a play without the great ambiance.... disappointing. Christian Bale was definitely the best thing about the whole thing
I thought the movie was fantastic until it decided to explain everything at the very end. I thought the robotic monologues were necessary and well timed, just as how almost every line in the movie was a metaphor with meaning that only existed if you read past it, or people would say stuff only to convey the essence of the interaction even if the interaction itself would never playout that way in real life "ex: Margo robie immediately gets a pipe, Washington says: Your a woman who smokes?, Margo robie then picks up a drink, Washington says : Your a woman who drinks? ... margo doesnt even drink or light the pipe, its all just to literally convey the point of her not being the average woman, thats she's more liberal... The robotic monologue were just other examples of the same concept exicuted. The entire thing was a dream, nothing was literal, but it used the logic of dreams, how things that shouldnt flow into eachother just do and you accept it without question. Its just the dam closing monologue that broke this spell.
I personally thought this movie was quite good but my biggest complaint was pretty similar to yours and that was they spelled everything out too blatantly by the end. The first two acts were great in my opinion, as they connected everything together and it didn’t feel convoluted to me. I didn’t like how obviously they spelled out the ending though because it felt cheesy. I wouldn’t say I was insulted by it, but it didn’t improve the movie in any way and probably dragged it down a little bit. Overall though, I really liked the movie, especially the acting, and I personally think it is worth watching, despite what critics may say.
Watched the movie (well not exactly) with 3 friends of mine ig the movie didn’t cut out for us since we left like 20 mins in or so, the majority of the other viewers were elderly so ig the target market was the elderly since they got a few chuckles and so. Ye you can bash us for being ignorant and not diving into the plot, but teens will be teens; inattentive, and daft
I'm so glad that I didn't link Washington to his father until a week after seeing it. I thought he looked like Babyface, the Haves & Have Nots Jeffrey who played a young Babyface in tv movie, OBryan & vet actor from Juwanna Man. I did not him doing a Denzel command voice/NYC accent at 1 point but still didn't put it together. I thought he was the young man from Devotion. I was distracted by the mannerisms of Bale who had facial movements similar to an elderly man I know who is quirky when he makes them as well.
The line reading was so baffling. I kept wondering if this was adapted from a stage play and they were trying to emulate more of a theatrical style. These are all super talented actors, so there must have been some intentionality behind it. But at times it felt like Bale was a guest star in a community theater production where the rest of the cast was barely off book.
Super heroes Has nothing to do with it, It was not funny, boring, and scenes dragged out for no reason. The acting was great, love bale, he was great in it, I just never once cared for what was going on or for any of the characters, any of them could of died and I’d yawn. See how they run was kinda similar but at least it had legitimate laughs.
I’m surprised Hollywood put out a movie that was anti “man” and had the message of protecting the little guy and reminding everyone who the country really belongs to.
I agree with a lot of the points you've made, but I personally enjoyed it. I was fine with the holding hands part and explaining the plot review step by step bc I've watched many animes with that formula which could be annoying to some, but again. I'm used to it. Also I don't predict things when I watch movies. I noticed I just watch movies for the moment scene by scene and enjoy it to the best of my ability which could be why I enjoyed it from my pov. Not a 5/5 but I'd give it a 80% I suppose
After reading some reviews, the movie came together for me. It's takes an odd way to get there, but it has a real story (relevant today) that's actually chilling considering why the war to end all wars didn't and the politics of today. Ahem... January 6th 😳
I don't like social media nor these mysterious algorithm, but your videos have not been appearing in my feed (and recently, TH-cam is showing me recommending videos I've seen already. Urgh...). The reviews are pretty consistent, sadly, for this movie; Silver Lining Playbook was such a good movie from this director. I will probably wait to watch this. There are many more smaller movies that are more interesting. Great emsemble casts in recent years are definitely Knives Out and even Everything Everywhere.
It almost looked promising but it was a weird trailer and I'm not a personal fan of any of these stars, and after more research have decided...I'm going to hang onto my dollars. Anyone watch 'See How They Run'? That had a pretty good cast and left a pleasant sensation after watching, as did the latest Jurassic Park, 'Bullet Train', the years of longing movie and Maverick.
Thanks Chris I heard similar takes on this film. Seems like the film 🎞 is relying on big named actors & actresses to sell the film. Sometime you can have too much of a good thing with so many actors & actresses. Seemed like it distracted from the film. I’m definitely waiting this one out. 🛋 🛋 1/2
The story it’s based on is incredible and the cast was impressive. However it felt like the need to be quirky was more important than the handling of the mystery. Also the great bond pack felt shallow. I did not feel chemistry between the 3 that was supposed to be such a driver of the story. Christian Bale was great but all alone on the stage it felt.
Good review and I agree Christian Bale was the stand out and his terrific accent. I thought all the cast were excellent, Margot Robbie , Zoe Saldana, Chris Rock , Washington et al. DeNiro was faultless as the Smedley Butler-like character, Rami Malek and Anya Taylor-Joy oozed with sinister arrogance. No doubt it was flawed but not enough to detract...and I thought the issue especially in context with the Jan 6 insurrection extremely relevant.
Personally I thought the plot and especially the dialogues are weak and try hard to imitate other prominent directors' style but fell flat. I didn't search about how much this movie scored bc i already excited when i watched the trailer and decided it's a must watch, but unfortunately this movie is too underwhelming for me. I honestly didn't feel a thing watching this.
Just saw this movie and I have no words!!! It's absolutely amazing! Can't remember when was the last time that I left the theater absolutely ecstatic! The line up is unbelievable, so many great actors in one movie. Great story, stunning visuals, electric performances, vibrant, colorful, explosive. The costume designer amd make-up artist deserve an Oscar immediately. It's a murder mystery, romance, farce, war movie, political polemic and period piece rolled into one. Hate to read that some critics compare this movie to American Hustle, Amsterdam is a million times better. The filmography reminds me of Wes Anderson in some way. Critics who giving this movie low ratings can't handle non-linear story. Yes, this movie is manic and chaotic and it was meant this way. Cristian Bale is outstanding as usual! Sarcastic and funny and relatable. Best work of David O. Russell! Absolute must see for all film lovers.
I enjoyed this movie and the delivery of dialogue had a Wes Anderson kind of quirkiness that I enjoy. I am NOT saying it is like a W.A. -especially visually- I agree there were a few times the characters felt unsure of their lines-I may give too much credit-but the movie directly tells us that we write our own stories as we go---. I liked the quirky delivery-I felt they did a great job of making the characters 3D while using this style of 2D. I did wonder if it would "age" well -if people didn't "get" the style, and it fell flat a few times-but I enjoyed the light humor it added to otherwise serious subject-which may be why it was allowed.
I went into this movie expecting not to like it, partly from the trailer which I didn't find compelling, and partly because of several negative reviews from others. Thankfully, this movie had me riveted from start to finish. Sure, I have a few nit-picks, but I really think they're not worth mentioning. I hope this movie does well as it's definitely reflective of modern political times just as much as it is of historical events.
I found this movie a missed opportunity. Good cast, interesting story but such a bad directing... repetitive scenes, bizare dialogue and bad french 😅 Christian Bale was very good, honestly it was the only reason I stayed in the cinema until the end.
Is it a 'thing' to have a popular singer drive a plot point? ;) Harry Styles, now Taylor Swift - both 'help' propel the story - and fans are satisfied I guess. Did not really enjoy the last 'propaganda type' war movie I watched, Inglorious Basterds.' So, your recommendations here are pretty good :)
I am half Dutch and Argentinian. I'm from Amsterdam, but this movie sucks! My family in Buenos Aires said on Whatsapp and said they thought 80% was about Amsterdam, but it was more about the American bullshit. They went to see that weird movie in the cinema for a reason. Christian Bale is a good actor, but he didn't fit in that movie. I don't care about the rest of the actors.
This movie was terrible. We watched it last night and I had to go in the living room and watch something else. I told my husband I’m going to look up movie reviews lol. That’s how I found you 😂
Director David O Russell hasn’t done a movie for quite a few years, and I was confident he was going to make a huge comeback with this one. I heard this movie in development for the last couple years. What a shame!
So many ensemble cast movies...more than not they are crap lol! A couple actual great ones that spring to mind would be: The Usual Suspects, LotR trilogy, Pulp Fiction, Ocean's 11, Heat...
I agree that the pacing was not always great, and i noticed some of the strange line deliveries, but overall I like the movie. I loved the friendship between the three and would watch a whole movie about that. I wish there had been less focus on Beatrice -- it was easy to get early on that she wasn't nice and Burt deserved better so we didn't need to see so much of that. It would've been better to focus more on the development of Irma and Burt's relationship. So I'm agreeing that it explains too much sometimes, and I feel it didn't have the right focus all the time. Visually stunning and I like the music (though the song over the end credits felt cheesy and didn't fit). Great performances too. For me, the good outweighed the bad here
Watched this in imax last night & I thought the production was incredible & costume design and everything. It was a very beautiful movie, but I agree with a lot of critics that the storyline was really messy. Acting was great (except Taylor Swift)
I really loved this movie. Is an American story but so far away from the gringo movie this “movie reviewer”is requesting. So at the end, mr reviewer, go and see Marvel movies. Enjoy
All the ideas went into investing the Huge cast But it's okay let's have these Massive talented cast have some fun on their own. Only Bale is like 'No, i will still do what I've come here to do !!' 😂😂
They made this movie just after the vaccine came out in Nov 2020. They filmed it a month after. So it was thrown together. But it wasn't actually bad it was good talent that came together and good writing.. just story wise it came up short.

This movie cost me time and money that I will never get back. As far as I’m concerned, there are really no positives to this.
When Taylor Swift, getting pushed under the car and killed, is the best part of the movie, you know that the movie is in trouble. And yes, that actually happens in the movie spoiler alert. And yes, I found out to be the most exciting part of the movie.
@@96Samar96 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was terrific! Idk how you are putting it on par with this tosh.
I really enjoyed this film. What you call "inconsistencies" weren't a negative for me. It had a quirky charm where the peculiarities works here.
I almost left halfway through. Had some funny bits, maybe its not my type of film but it felt lackluster to me.
I never leave a film but I wanted to for this one, I was just so bored and tired, I wasn’t pulled into the story at any point.
Taylor Swift's appearance is right up there with Paris Hilton in House of Wax.

Well said!
Saving Private Ryan is my all time fave big ensemble cast!
This was a great movie all around, sadly the masses rather watch super hero movies with no great plot or story telling.
@@ronthorn3you seem to like dumb down movies
This was a messy and unnatural film. I didn't finish it, which is rare for me.
I’m surprised Hollywood put out a movie that was anti “man” and had the message of protecting the little guy and reminding everyone who the country really belongs to.
Bro what?
I agree with a lot of the points you've made, but I personally enjoyed it. I was fine with the holding hands part and explaining the plot review step by step bc I've watched many animes with that formula which could be annoying to some, but again. I'm used to it. Also I don't predict things when I watch movies. I noticed I just watch movies for the moment scene by scene and enjoy it to the best of my ability which could be why I enjoyed it from my pov. Not a 5/5 but I'd give it a 80% I suppose
Great review. Ioved hearing your thoughts.
i was super hyped for this because i loved American Hustle so much, and although it was entertaining the editing was so jarring and inconsistent
After reading some reviews, the movie came together for me. It's takes an odd way to get there, but it has a real story (relevant today) that's actually chilling considering why the war to end all wars didn't and the politics of today. Ahem... January 6th 😳
I hope you realize the people trying to destroy our democracy and keep the people in power who only care about money are the current people in power.
I enjoyed the movie alot
I don't like social media nor these mysterious algorithm, but your videos have not been appearing in my feed (and recently, TH-cam is showing me recommending videos I've seen already. Urgh...).
The reviews are pretty consistent, sadly, for this movie; Silver Lining Playbook was such a good movie from this director. I will probably wait to watch this. There are many more smaller movies that are more interesting.
Great emsemble casts in recent years are definitely Knives Out and even Everything Everywhere.
Did they actually use 1960s music in the movie as they did in the official trailer??
I was looking forward to seeing it until about a month ago when I heard it wasn't good. 😕
This movie will become a cult classic💕
Dunno about that
It almost looked promising but it was a weird trailer and I'm not a personal fan of any of these stars, and after more research have decided...I'm going to hang onto my dollars.
Anyone watch 'See How They Run'? That had a pretty good cast and left a pleasant sensation after watching, as did the latest Jurassic Park, 'Bullet Train', the years of longing movie and Maverick.
I saw see how they run. It was good, not very exciting or amazing, but good
Thanks Chris I heard similar takes on this film.
There was definitely some not so subtle political messaging as well. Not as blatant as Look Up but akin to it.
I'm glad you enjoyed this film as much as I did. This film will be a hidden gem to anyone that enjoys art
Good cast, interesting story but such a bad directing... repetitive scenes, bizare dialogue and bad french 😅
Christian Bale was very good, honestly it was the only reason I stayed in the cinema until the end.
I'm watching this movie for almost an hour it's boooorring .
Amsterdam is Worst story line and script I have ever had the misfortune to sit through.

Damn I was hoping this would be good.
Am I the only one that this movie reminds of Birdman?
For me, the good outweighed the bad here
Awesome
All the talent, all of it!
Yeah, all the talent that's all about it lol.
