    Honestly this was a bad review about a great film. The main reason why is your statement "The storytelling becomes Obvious and Predictable... insulting to the audience...in the finale treating moviegoers as adults who need every aspect explained in glaringly straightforward detail." My problem with these statements is they made the story glaringly obvious for a reason, and people still don't get the point. It's not a simple whodunnit. It's exposing the corruption in the world, that we all are in great danger of becoming victims to, or many already have, with things like the opioid crisis & the housing crisis/economy collapsing. And the things that go on when people try to stop them. "The committee of the 5" or in the real world The Boys Clubs are the same groups of people, a small oligarchy connected to these crisis we have today. Happening in the exact same pattern and cycles. It's sort of a whistleblower film, the director is the whistleblower. Could be a reason why the film isn't doing so good. It's an amazing and bold story, that I think people should take more time to unpack.

    It’s funny. When a movie has a large cast of “high profile names” like this one I usually lower my expectations
    I do this because I’ve been burned numerous times in the past
    This last and final time being House of Gucci
    Now I’ve come to realization that no amount of acting talent can resuscitate a bad script

    I was at an advance screening last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I don't understand the negative criticisms from many critics. I don't find the story convoluted or clunky at all, the whole story made logical sense with good themes. The way the story pivots away from the 3 core cast to the greater conspiracy / military coup and social commentary - makes for a sensible flow and pacing to me. I don't feel insulted at all as a viewer or being talked down to. I gave it 7/10 on imdb

Several parts of the movie reminded me of the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" and other parts reminded me of "With Honors" - Also the political intrigue of movies like "Vice" and TV shows like "The Americans", but on a set similar to "Swing Kids". Me too… I don’t get how people are saying the movie isn’t that good. A lot of reviewers are hitting this hard. The movie is about these three friends and the crazy things they learned about life. All the actors did good but Bale as Bert stole the show imo. As a character he resonated with me and how I’d like to live life.

    • @Arete1
      @Arete1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dakoodragon8876 It does not have to be complex, but this just was not interesting. The story is about a political intrigue, interwar period and conspiratorial cabal that wants to overthrow the US government. These topic have been delivered in such a childish and simple way that it is an insult for the viewer.
      The characters had a lot of potential but they were potrayed in a very cold manner. I just don't feel qny real romance or friendship in these relationships.

    • @dakoodragon8876
      @dakoodragon8876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Arete1 I can see what you mean- the plot is served to you on a divided plate, with everything very clear in front of you… that being said I have to disagree, Bert felt so real to me, as I see alot of me in him. I think Valorie and Harold were good characters but Valorie was a little bit too weird in the beginning for me, and Harold was just a bit bland for me. However all 3 gave a good blend imo. Mike Meyers and Michael Shannon were absolutely hilarious… had they given just a little more substance to the bird plot, I think there could’ve been some real depth given to them. I’m glad we’re having such a respectable discussion tho, most people just devolve into bickering.

    This movie wasn't made to make money, obviously. It was intended to convey to younger viewers "how we got here" in modern day America. It doesn't insult the audience, because most Americans are as stupid as the writers assume they are, and they don't know their history (because they aren't really interested in it). Time will tell if it fails, since its effectively intended to diffuse knowledge into the audience as it is replayed over time. For those who understood the movie (and the point of it), explain it to others who still "didn't get it".

  • @rustyshackleford6035

    Didn't they end knife's out the same way he's describing going over everything point by point ☝️ and even showing the past events and everyone loved 😍 that movie 🎥 haven't seen Amsterdam yet and don't remember if he liked Knife's out or not but seems like a lot critics are already dragging this though the mud for being like knife's out and at the same time not being just like it I will watch this when it comes to DVD 📀 or streaming services

    • @BrianBullington
      @BrianBullington 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flashbacks can be done well. 6th sense famously did it well. And knives out did as well. In these cases the flashbacks are helping the audience recontextualize things along with one of the main characters to bring you to an understanding just as the audience does. But in Amsterdam the plot had been basically already spelled out for a good 20 minutes before the flashback scene. It is less like Knives out, and more akin to if they'd paused the castle invasion scene in Beauty and the beast for Gaston to say "you know, I've had a crush on belle and i got jealous so i rounded up the towns people to come here" (complete with flashbacks to scenes of him crushing on belle and the scene 5 minutes before where he started the song Kill the Beast). So by the time it gets to that scene it doesn't feel like some clever reveal. It feels more like. "Yeah... we know...that was literally what you spent the last 20 minutes telling us." So it is less the specific technique... and more the fact that that technique brought nothing new to the audience in this particular movie.
      At least in my opinion.

I did enjoy the dialogue but honestly I was only paying about half attention and just enjoying awhile with my wife. So I would probably give it a 3 possibly 3.5 it wasn’t perfect but I did not hate any moment in it terribly.

    The movie was crap. I went originally because of the star power in the movie. However, the movie was slow and all over the place. It could not decide whether it wanted to be an espionage movie, a drama or comedy. It had an identity crisis. The story was very disjointed. It’s like if you cut this movie down to be a coherent film you would have a 20 minute short film. I actually got up and walked out because it was so bad. I gave it a good amount of time to win the over. I watch the movie for an hour at that point. I was done. Some of the things you say about this movie I have to wonder if you were even watching the same movie as I was lol Christian Bale came across something like John Leguizamo. Chris rock look like a 50 year old guy remind me of that he was a black man in the 1930s. And let’s be honest how many black Americans do you know graduated from Columbia law in 1930s? I would say that would be near to impossible given the time in the racism that was prevalent.
    This movie cost me time and money that I will never get back. As far as I’m concerned, there are really no positives to this.
    When Taylor Swift, getting pushed under the car and killed, is the best part of the movie, you know that the movie is in trouble. And yes, that actually happens in the movie spoiler alert. And yes, I found out to be the most exciting part of the movie.

    I thought the movie was fantastic until it decided to explain everything at the very end. I thought the robotic monologues were necessary and well timed, just as how almost every line in the movie was a metaphor with meaning that only existed if you read past it, or people would say stuff only to convey the essence of the interaction even if the interaction itself would never playout that way in real life "ex: Margo robie immediately gets a pipe, Washington says: Your a woman who smokes?, Margo robie then picks up a drink, Washington says : Your a woman who drinks? ... margo doesnt even drink or light the pipe, its all just to literally convey the point of her not being the average woman, thats she's more liberal... The robotic monologue were just other examples of the same concept exicuted. The entire thing was a dream, nothing was literal, but it used the logic of dreams, how things that shouldnt flow into eachother just do and you accept it without question. Its just the dam closing monologue that broke this spell.

The first two acts were great in my opinion, as they connected everything together and it didn’t feel convoluted to me. I didn’t like how obviously they spelled out the ending though because it felt cheesy. I wouldn’t say I was insulted by it, but it didn’t improve the movie in any way and probably dragged it down a little bit. Overall though, I really liked the movie, especially the acting, and I personally think it is worth watching, despite what critics may say.

    The line reading was so baffling. I kept wondering if this was adapted from a stage play and they were trying to emulate more of a theatrical style. These are all super talented actors, so there must have been some intentionality behind it. But at times it felt like Bale was a guest star in a community theater production where the rest of the cast was barely off book.

No doubt it was flawed but not enough to detract...and I thought the issue especially in context with the Jan 6 insurrection extremely relevant.

The line up is unbelievable, so many great actors in one movie. Great story, stunning visuals, electric performances, vibrant, colorful, explosive. The costume designer amd make-up artist deserve an Oscar immediately. It's a murder mystery, romance, farce, war movie, political polemic and period piece rolled into one. Hate to read that some critics compare this movie to American Hustle, Amsterdam is a million times better. The filmography reminds me of Wes Anderson in some way. Critics who giving this movie low ratings can't handle non-linear story. Yes, this movie is manic and chaotic and it was meant this way. Cristian Bale is outstanding as usual! I am NOT saying it is like a W.A. -especially visually- I agree there were a few times the characters felt unsure of their lines-I may give too much credit-but the movie directly tells us that we write our own stories as we go---. I liked the quirky delivery-I felt they did a great job of making the characters 3D while using this style of 2D. I did wonder if it would "age" well -if people didn't "get" the style, and it fell flat a few times-but I enjoyed the light humor it added to otherwise serious subject-which may be why it was allowed.

    I went into this movie expecting not to like it, partly from the trailer which I didn't find compelling, and partly because of several negative reviews from others. Thankfully, this movie had me riveted from start to finish. Sure, I have a few nit-picks, but I really think they're not worth mentioning. I hope this movie does well as it's definitely reflective of modern political times just as much as it is of historical events.

    I found this movie a missed opportunity. Good cast, interesting story but such a bad directing... repetitive scenes, bizare dialogue and bad french 😅
    Christian Bale was very good,honestly it was the only reason I stayed in the cinema until the end.

    Is it a 'thing' to have a popular singer drive a plot point? ;) Harry Styles, now Taylor Swift - both 'help' propel the story - and fans are satisfied I guess. Did not really enjoy the last 'propaganda type' war movie I watched, Inglorious Basterds.' So, your recommendations here are pretty good :)

    I agree that the pacing was not always great, and i noticed some of the strange line deliveries, but overall I like the movie. I loved the friendship between the three and would watch a whole movie about that. I wish there had been less focus on Beatrice -- it was easy to get early on that she wasn't nice and Burt deserved better so we didn't need to see so much of that. It would've been better to focus more on the development of Irma and Burt's relationship. So I'm agreeing that it explains too much sometimes, and I feel it didn't have the right focus all the time. Visually stunning and I like the music (though the song over the end credits felt cheesy and didn't fit). Great performances too. For me, the good outweighed the bad here
