    With all due respect to Jerry Garcia and Fender Custom Shop the price tag is just crazy.(20k$) This is just a guitar for rich guys that will get it just to showcase it. Do a production model with the the stickers optional in the case like you did with the Jimmy Page Mirror Telecaster. A guitar that is more accessible and that will be played by fans.

    I've been a DeadHead since the mid 1970s and saw probably 150 live Dead shows...and while I appreciate all the work that went into replicating this beautiful, one of a kind instrument, a 20K price tag seems a bit unreasonable. It makes it highly out of reach for those of us who would appreciate it the most. I think 7K to 8K would have been a much better price point. Fender still could have made money on it I'm sure. That aside, the tone Jerry got from that gem during the Europe '72 Tour was the Holy Grail of tone in my opinion. That guitar sounded like no other before it or since. That piece of wood had real life inside of it and Jerry made it sing, wail, cry, moan while took us all on a musical ride for the ages. He really connected with it and knew how to get everything out of it. I wish he would have played in the 1980s as well. Nobody sounded quite like Jerry, Nobody. Great to see Steve Parish again. I got a chance to meet him a couple times many years ago...👍

    Tadeo Gomez was a worker at Fender Musical Instrument Manufacturing Company in Fullerton, California in the 1950s. He has become famous amongst players and collectors of electric guitars for the high quality of his work and his habit of signing his name or initials on the guitars he helped to craft.
    His initials appear on famous guitars such as Eric Clapton's Brownie.

      I don’t either, but in the pantheon of iconic player recreation guitars, this one probably justifies it’s price more than say a Gibson Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul. This fender is so unique, and so many unique hand-made parts had to be recreated and fabricated by hand. This is a masterwork by the Fender Custom shop.
      And damned if it doesn’t sound right!

    Europe 72 was a great time for the band, and the sound was amazing at that time. The Doug Irwin designed custom Wolf guitar came after this and that was also a very legendary guitar. The reason Jerry customized guitars, and then went to custom built guitars is because he didn't like what he could buy from companies like Fender. Not sure if Fender realizes that this guitar is a monument to that fact. I guess anything to monetize and commercialize the legacy of Jerry Garcia is okay now.

      I just watched a TH-cam interview with Jerry. Pretty sure I have this right, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Wolf was co-designed by Jerry and Doug. Jerry essentially told him what he wanted, though they worked together figuring out the specifics. Later Jerry asked him to design a guitar for him and do whatever he wanted. Five years later the guitar showed up. At the time of the interview he'd just gotten it, loved it, but it changed the way he played. So he was both getting used to it and seeing what new things were possible. The time frame was just as Brett joined the band. The interview was on WMMR in Philly.

      @@mikem668 Yea, that second Irwin Guitar was called Tiger. It was made of exotic tropical hardwood Cocobola, Maple, and padauk. It was named Tiger because of the Tiger inlay on the body. He played it from 1979 to 1989. In 1989 Irwin gave Garcia the next one called Rosebud. Those were one of a kind works of art.

It is supposedly the lightest strat in existence weighing in around 6.5 pounds even with all that brass and one piece of ash which is unheard of. But there’s something about old dehydrated wood, tons of play wear, and a touch of grey, that makes this guitar transcend all other guitars and truly plays for you

    In one way I think this is great, but in another way there's seems to be something not quite right about paying $20k for a guitar that should be for deadheads. However, if that $20k keeps craftsmen who make these things in work then that is good as the attention to detail and so on is impressive and for those who can afford it maybe it is a small investment to keep those skills alive.

    • @lptomtom
      @lptomtom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Boomers love the Dead, there are lots of very wealthy Deadheads that will be delighted to buy this, keep it in its case 98% of the time and resell it a few years later for a nice profit

    • @caorach3354
      @caorach3354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lptomtom That is a good point but, as I said, the other side to this is that these wealthy people pay for craftsmen and the very highest standard of guitar building and not only does that keep people in jobs but it keeps that craftsmanship alive. When we look back at great talents in the arts from times past they were almost always paid for by the very rich but today we all benefit from their work. So I'm glad this exists, I'm glad some can afford it, but it just seems a little "odd" to me in some respects.

    IIRC Rick Turner commented that Jer did not prefer the final version of this guitar, which is how this is setup. It was mostly due to the rosewood plate/riser under the tailpiece. His preferred config was the prior version with a simpler brass tailpiece. Note photos of the setup in the 1972 tour. Turner also commented that these pickups were not standard but rather extremely low wound, hence the always on boost circuit. The covers were painted on the inside with conductive paint and grounded, also.

I mean stickers? who cares and I printed them in the Mission for years. What's a '55 strat, all original go for that hasn't been stripped?

    Closed captioning starts out "funky guitar lick". This isn't funk, it's rock and roll mixed with blues. People are now losing track of musical genres.
    Stop calling things funky, it does not make sense. You are long haired white rockers, not Bootsy Collins.

    It's gorgeous. But shame on you fender for making these so stupid expensive and rare that no true fans can touch them. Don't think Jerry would have liked that. Exactly why I don't touch fenders or Gibson's anymore. They forgot their roots, and there are great guitars out there for a fraction with way better specs. C'mon fender. Sink or swim it's up to you. When your spuires are better then your strats, there's a problem

    I put pickups that sound exactly like the Quarter Pound (Quarter Tone from Malagoli pickups), and the construction of the body wood was in a single piece of Louro Freijó handpicked by the Lutheria Peace Custom Shop in Brazil (Brazilian noble wood that is equivalent to American ASH), all Gotoh hardware and hardware. No shield, straight-on-wood pickups like Jake E. Lee's Charvel Strat that he played on Ozzy Osborne's The Ultimate Sin tour.

      The Jerry tone came from his custom Alembic guitars made by Doug Irwin

    • @edwinhurwitz6792
      @edwinhurwitz6792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Group_Anonymous Well, that's a weird statement. Doug Irwin only made one guitar while at Alembic that Jerry had and Jerry did not play it much and I don't think he played it on stage. The Irwin guitars which we associate with Jerry were made long after he left Alembic, starting with Wolf. Those guitars weren't the only ones that provided quintessential Jerry tone. Europe '72 was a quintessential Jerry tone and that's thanks to the modified Graham Nash strat. Some people even think that quintessential Jerry tone was the SG from the Live/DEAD days. There is no one guitar that provided it. Jerry tone comes from Jerry.

    • @Group_Anonymous
      @Group_Anonymous 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwinhurwitz6792 Luthier Doug Irwin built three of his five custom guitars. When asked about that fact, Jerry replied, "There’s something about the way they feel with my touch-they’re married to each other…I’d never felt anything before or since that my hand likes better."

    • @Group_Anonymous
      @Group_Anonymous 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edwinhurwitz6792 At the end of 1972, Jerry stumbled onto the first guitar Doug Irwin made for Alembic, and bought it on the spot for $850. At the same time he asked Irwin to customize another for him. This was the inception of Wolf. It was made from purpleheart and curly maple with an ebony fingerboard and twenty-four frets. The first version bore a peacock inlay, and later received Irwin’s eagle logo in its place. A bloodthirsty cartoon wolf sticker Jerry placed below the tailpiece served to name the guitar and was later inlaid in the body by Irwin.
      When Jerry asked Doug Irwin, immediately after receiving Wolf, to make another guitar, he told him, “don’t hold back.” He was told to make it the way he thought was best, and not worry about cost. Irwin obliged, and six years later Tiger hit the stage and became his most-played guitar. Named after the tiger inlay just below the tailpiece, the body features several layers of wood laminated together face-to-face in a configuration referred to as a "hippie sandwich." The combination of heavy woods (cocobolo, vermilion, maple), plus solid brass binding and hardware resulted in a 13.5 lb. instrument.
      Jerry loved Tiger for the wealth of sounds it gave him to play with. In one interview he said, “[There’s] like twelve discreet possible voices that are all pretty different…That gives me a lot of vocabulary of basically different tones. And that’s just the electronics; the rest of it is touch. I mostly work off the middle pickup…and I can get almost any sound I want out of that.”

    • @edwinhurwitz6792
      @edwinhurwitz6792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Group_Anonymous Sure, but "Jerry tone" means a lot of different things to a lot of people. You are expressing your opinion, but that doesn't mean that it applies for everyone. That's the great thing about Jerry and the Grateful Dead. They mean so many things to so many people and no one is wrong and no one person is absolutely right.

    Still have my vinyl copy of Hooteroll. Who wound the pick ups? There's a lady who worked at Fender in the fifties who is renowned for her windings but I forget her name. Twenty grand makes me choke though. Maybe for Jerry's actual one, maybe, but not a copy. Try two grand for Corona made, or $899 for Mexi made. Jerry wasn't playing this strat in August 1972 at Veneta, OR. He was playing the tobacco burst strat.
