It's called a nitrocellulose paint as the years go by through lots of sweat/ just time passing by the finish will actually start fading away its not as durable as polyurethane finish where it will last basically forever, and as the finish on top fades away it will reveal this pink shade which was done first before putting the sunburst
It's actually kinda the reverse of how things used to be done. Lots of old custom-color Fenders were sprayed on top of sunbursts, because they were handy, Fender having made many more of them.
Can we all take a moment to thank Keanu for his input on the electronics of the bass. I've been waiting forever for someone to make a blend knob on a passive fender bass instead of the two volume knobs.
Fr in my opinion blend knobs are the most under used circuitry options in all of guitar and bass design. You can turn what would normally take three controls (pickup selector, two volume knobs), and turn it all into one simple knob. Throw on a center notch so you can always find where both pick-ups are on full, stick on a master volume. Now you don't have to worry about breaking a switch tip, accidentally having someone bump you into the wrong pickup, or even the switch going out like I've had on my dad's old strat. Plus, that just makes it easier in my opinion to make overall output adjustments should you be pumping out too hot of a signal, cause when you have no master volume and two independent volume knobs, it's really finicky to attenuate both knobs by the same amount without losing the tone you dialed in. Of course, Leo had experimented with blend controls in the early 50s with the original broadcaster circuitry, but that setup had to compromise some flexibility due to not having concentric pots or stuff like that yet. But nowadays, I feel like blends should be wayyy more popular. I mean, they did the stack knob Jazz bass in the 60s, but for whatever reason you just don't see passive pJ with blends and concentric pots
I thought so too. I prefer blend over V/V already and adding individual passive tone controls that you can blend seems like it would add a lot of tone variation. I would have loved to hear a full demo.
I ADORE that wiring!! That's the exact scheme I've considered the most efficient and impactful wiring scheme for two pick-up instruments. Master volume to be able to mute yourself at a moment's notice or account for a squirrelly preamp or pedals. A blend instead of a switch, cause that'll give you all the combos that'd you'd get from a three way switch with independent volume for each pickup all in one control instead of three, and an independent tone for each pickup so you can get more nuanced in-between sounds or soften one pickup without pulling too much definition from the other. So glad to see Keanu had that request, cause that's freaking perfect imo
Keanu you such an humble human. And your idea are among the best than even Fender can't have: the Elite neck pocket, the separated tone control on PJ + the headstock trussrod access... such great idea. You are the man.
Meeting Keanu Reeves after watching an old E! News interview where he mentioned connecting with fans through an exclusive members club was an incredible and unexpected experience.
That's amazing! I saw the E News interview where Keanu talked about connecting with fans through Radiant Reservation-it's incredible that you got to be part of it!
I love watching educational videos on TH-cam, especially Keanu Reeves interviews, and would eagerly share his wisdom with my future kids if he ever launched his own insightful channel.
I still can't believe it happened-I joined an exclusive members club that organizes private meetings with public figures, and meeting Keanu Reeves was like winning the lottery; he's even more charming in person.
Nothing against his playing, and maybe this is mostly meme culture talking, but I appreciate that this seems to be an honor less about the quality of "musicianship" or of a person's impact on music so much as it's about the quality of the person himself. Keanu is a treasure, and it's good to see good things happen for good people.
He is pretty much what you would want any of your heroes to be if you meet them in person. He at least deserves a bass.. lol. I don't care if he couldn't play at all haha 😅😅
He strikes me as very supportive of everyone around him in the construction of the bass, his relationship with Fender, and in his role in the band. The playing isn't anything flashy, but supports the vocals, guitar, and drums without fail.
All of the good things said above are true, and that stack knob for the tone is smart. The guy has good taste. You can teach chops but you can't teach taste.
I would so buy a signature style bass with them pick ups. Real cool idea. I have both the P an the J bass but just in time why not have the mustang bass set up with the 2 tones with volume. So rad.
I already have this on my Fender Deluxe P that I rewired to passive. But Vol / Vol / Tone / Tone. Resistors were added to make the tone controls individual and not conflict. It works really well having just the grinding high end of the P pickup with the added bass growl of the bridge pickup.
I have been playing Fender for over 40 years. I think Leo struck perfection with the Precision bass body. The PJ pick up choice is spot on. I have wired a similar bass with a dedicated, central detente, blender control and found it extremely beneficial, props to Keanu for coming up with the idea of the stacked tone blender. While I prefer a jazz taper to the neck, I think Mr. Reeves may have larger hands than I, so I can dig the precision neck he chose. It seems like a great partnership, I give props to his playing as an old punk of the early 80s and he certainly seems to be as kind and good of a human as I have heard him to be.
Some say Keanu is the nicest guy in Hollywood for his humble demeanor and he seems genuine. Watch out Jaco Pastorius, there's a new bass player in town! Cheers!
Really cool choices. 20 frets. Great sunburst to relic. That PJ setup is cool. Notice it’s Keanu inspired, not a pretentious Keanu signature. Great dude!
I have to say it again, because it's sadly an extinct-soon-to-be art - something, well not something but a piece of functional art hand made, custom made by masters of the craft in your own country. That's such a treasure. 💯💫❤ Keanu is such a fountain of art visionary. ❤
This volume, pickup selector, and two-tone setting is the perfect match for all passive basses. You can play with the neck pickup open and the bridge pickup closed.
With the three holes on the pickguard you could do two stacked knobs (volume and tone for each pickup) and then a Blend knob or Master Volume knob as well.🤔 I like KR's idea on here too for the stacked tone controls.😉👍✨
I have done the master volume, master tone and blend wiring. it's really my favorite. Keanu's idea of a stacked tone blend never occurred to me. I bet it is EXCELLENT.
@@davidboone8875 I have a Squier Precision Bass Standard and I have the three knob layout on there but I want to do one down the road with a PJ setup with just a volume, a tone and a three way toggle like a Telecaster.

Incredible workhorse bass. And definitely that electronic setup is balls to the wall awesome, especially for folks who want a) control but b) not a million knobs with c) passive pickups. Really killer versatility without having to involve a bunch of extra wiring, or remembering in phase/out of phase or whatever some of the switches on really complicated basses use. Doing more with less for sure.
I already have this kind of wiring on my Fender Deluxe P that I rewired to passive. But Vol / Vol / Tone / Tone. Resistors were added to make the tone controls individual and not conflict. It works really well having just the grinding high end of the P pickup with the added bass growl of the bridge pickup.
Their certainly has been a hell of a lot of negative social media in regards to the Fender Custom Shop producing Signature Artist guitars, well they aren't signature Artists, I am referring to the recent Bruno Mars and now this Keanu Reeves Signature Custom Shop guitars/Bass's. We all know you really had to pay your dues to get into this exclusive "Custom Shop Signature Series Group". Becoming an Artist in your own right. But Keanu and Bruno are "Hack" guitarists/Bassists. They are Artists in different fields. Keanu an Actor, Bruno a Singer. No doubt Fender are bargaining on their world wide celebrity status's to be directly associated with the Fender company, and sell more Fender guitars. But I kinda like it. Like what they are doing here now. Fender are very much celebrating and rewarding all "hack" guitarists world-wide. Who as we all know here, are their most loyal customers. Well done Fender!!
Individual tone control for each pickup is actually a brilliant idea. I'm looking at my P/J's now and thinking a stacked tone knob for "Keanu wiring" would be a welcome change. I would have loved a full demo to hear what kind of tone variations you can get with it.

@@greyklopstock7155 I can still see the merit of selector switches-a blend knob isn't as quick if you need to switch pickups instantly.
