This isn’t Jazz and Jerry wasn’t a jazz musician… but you’re right that this music is nowhere near outside Jerry’s capabilities or genre . It’s the easiest groove to jam to in fact . Just a few chords and syncopated drums . It’s simple .

People never credit Jerry as a good jazz player when truth is he could play jazz very well. He loved jazz and this is displayed mainly on the Blues For Allah GD album.
His solo work on the track King Solomon's Marbles is outstanding.

What a beautiful melodic conversation among such talented musicians! The unspoken communication between the players is inspiring; when you reach a certain level, the groove just shows you the way! And Jerry's guitar tone on the first solo he plays is as close to perfect as can be, while Carlos gives a master class on how much can be done to color his tone with subtle tweaks of the guitar volume knob. Brilliant!

Some of his late JGB solos in 1993 were unlike anything he'd ever played. He continued to get better until he finally just burnt out. Never forget knowing my last show in Vegas 95, would be the last time I'd see him. "Unbroken Chain" was quite a send off.

Could not agree more.Rolie gave him the initial confidence ( and remains a great chum) but for me , Chester brought the best out of Carlos. Bit of a mystery as to what happened (suddenly ) but the trade offs and mutual understanding was there for all to see.

@@garylove5475 I was lucky enough to see him play w/Santana for the 1999 tour, in Atlanta - amazing show, magical . Ive seen Santana many times over the years , each show a little different from the last , all good , nonetheless. That night in 1999 it was the epitome of a Santana show.

Agree with that John, Tom Coster was and at 80 still is a great player. Think his first album for Santana was Amigos succeeding Richard Kermode Rip. Liked the Lotus period a lot and still play the much forgotten and publicly maligned Welcome collection. Other fav for me is Oneness.

Jerry Garcia at his peak essentially. Not much more rare than Jerry in a jam band situation like this.

If some people played guitar and understood what is actually happening here they would then understand how good and unique jerry is .....the way he plays in his own shows is just so clever and it's his own style.

Jerry was in the best health he had been in for so many years at this point. He had a few years of sobriety and his head was in a good place. You can see it reflected in his prodigious playing.

Of all the great guitarists out there my top three are Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia and Jeff Beck. They all follow their own muse.

What a show. Ruben Blades a great musician and political force. The way he honors his fellow musicians show the class RB always had and still has. Great show. Wish I was there.

CT... Chester Thompson on keys. Remarkable. And, Carlos strokes those six strings til they drip with emotion, til they cry as only he can.
