If you’ve used the PetSafe ScoopFree automatic litter box, we want to hear about it! What are your favorite AND least favorite things about this self-cleaning box?
My son’s cat used the Ultra and his cat didn’t like the noise. He was nervous and wary of it, and he stopped using it and went outside of the box. Needless to say, he is going back to Fresh Step etc. He is 10 lbs. He just gave it to me to try out.
I absolutely love these litter boxes! I've had mine for 4 years and the only reason I'm going to buy the ultra soon is that the motor is louder now on my regular one. It's never gotten stuck or broken. I've had one offs where I've had to push the button but it's been minimal over a very long time. I have 1 cat and it lasts for me the full month and is general not smelly even at the end of the month. I live in a very small space (450sq ft) and as soon as the rake has tucked away the business there's no smell. All my guests have confirmed that they don't get that cat pee stink at my place either. Suuuuuper super super recommended to literally anyone with a single cat. As it's about 30 bucks Canadian for 2 months worth of litter trays so it's very cost effective as well. The only downside I've experienced is when the sensor sometimes didn't trigger and that the odor isn't masked until the rake goes through which is I think set to 20 minutes which you cannot change on the regular box. I believe the ultra does let you shorten the time though. :)
@@amydouglas8838 thanks for your input! I was wondering where you buy the refills in Canada. I have check online but I haven’t seen any yet! Also do you know the extra features of the ultra, I am not sure if it’s worth $100 more
I have this box for 9 years before the rakes rusted out.. so I bought the second generation basically the same thing.. one trick I did was spray the rakes with silicone spray and even around the edges of the litter box inside carefully wiping it off so it doesn't get near the cats. Then another trick I saw which was amazing and brilliant CUT STRAWS IN HALF PUT THEM ON THE RAKES!! THE CAT POO DOES NOT STICK TO THE STRAWS AND YOU CAN REPLACE THE STRAWS IF YOU NEED TO!! FYI IT ALSO GETS MORE OF THE POO BECAUSE THE STRAWS MAKE THE RAKES NARROWER!! BRILLIANT!!
Bought this about 9 months ago. It took our cat a really long time to transition over to this box but now that she has, it is wonderful. Almost no tracking of litter. Odor control is good for about 60-70 uses of the box. We did notice that humidity changes the length of time the litter lasts. So if you keep your litter box in the basement, this litter won't last as long. Overall we love it!
I have to ask; do you clean out the litter periodically? There is no way on God's green earth that that tiny poop area will hold 60 to 70 uses period. I was under the impression that one did not ever have to clean out the litter box; that you used it for a period of time and you just put the lid on and dump it. After a few days our cat had filled up the poop area. No way were we getting 60 to 70 cleanings without having to dump poop out of the box.
We LOVE THIS LITTER BOX!!! It stops the smell, there’s no litter all over the floor, and best of all……… my DOG CANT EAT THE POOP ANYMORE!! We got the covered one!!! No more Scooby snacks for him! We have no problem paying more for these benefits!
Nadine, I wholeheartedly agree! This review was excellent. I knew nothing about this type of litter box. So, this video was excellent! It was presented in an easy to understand way, her speech was readily understandable and made for a perfect You Tube video! Thanks so very much for making this video for the likes of me!
I know, I know, my comment will never be read by the video creator but I just had to post. At first I thought I had just misheard you at 2:22... "wait, did she just say aDsorption?!?!" Your attention to detail and accuracy when describing the pertinent chemical reactions/phenomena should be applauded! Excellent review/description... I bought it! Thanks :)
We've been using the ScoopFree units for about 12 years now (two units; three cats). They're probably better suited for homes with fewer cats... or a bigger budget. Put it this way: we're seriously considering replacing them with TWO Litter Robots. Partly due to a bit more ease of use in terms of routine cleaning as we get a bit older and don't look forward to hauling out 30+ pounds of saturated cat litter every week or so, but mostly due to the cost of the litter. A few points that have come up over the years: 1) We did buy the plastic permanent trays, but we do also use the branded silica litter - the whole system kind of becomes pointless without it. We also purchased retrofit rakes that are Teflon coated, and reduce the sticking and corrosion... somewhat. These measures reduce the changing cost to about $8 - $10 a week, vs. $30 - $40 (assuming two units, once a week) for the "disposable" trays. But that's still $40 a month, where a decent standard clumping litter can be had for less than half that cost per quantity, especially if you buy larger bags. 2) At a bare minimum, a once-per-month "deep clean" is required, to remove the waste stuck everywhere but in the litter, as well as the cover components, rake, and drive slots. Maybe we're fastidious, but this is about an hour long process to disassemble everything, wash it out, scrub the heavily soiled portions, and generally clean up the area the boxes sit in (we have them on rubberized "outdoor rated" doormats, with a third "trap" mat out in front to hopefully reduce tracking). Maybe our cats are just messy, but they do track the stuff everywhere... and the crystals are *sharp* if you walk around barefoot! 3) Corrosion in the electronics, especially the power supply input plug. I'm constantly fighting corrosion on the power plug, as the current and cat urine are not friends. And let's face it - even the most fastidious of cats is going to either get pee on to the side of the unit occasionally - note the small litter area noted in the vid - or will gleefully fling wet litter around when digging for a dominant/advantageous spot to do their business in a multi-cat household. We've had two units become damaged to the point of replacement in 10 years. Not a bad track record I suppose... but it still galls to go out and spend another $150 on a brand new unit, only to see no design updates or any attempt at all really to address this somewhat weak design element. All that being said... we don't hate them. If we did, we wouldn't have used them for so long, and be still on the fence about replacing them. For what they do, they do a decent job at a (relatively) low price point for "automatic litter boxes". Just be aware you will be spending a lot on litter to make the best use of the system, you will need very nearly as much on-your-knees manual clean up as a simple manual box, and about the main advantage is the excellent odor-controlling litter.... which you can use in a manual box as well, if you so choose. If you only have one cat, this is probably a pretty good compromise between a basic box and something more extravagant like the Litter Robot. More than two, however, and just be aware you will spend a lot of money in the long run.
@@NonConformistFilms We got them off Amazon, from the guy who makes the plastic "Forever Trays". He got embroiled in legal issues with Scoop Free; I don't know if he's still selling the rakes or not. www.amazon.com/Forever-Replacement-Stainless-Stick-Resistant-Scoopfree/dp/B003F2TODY
You’re a better person than me. I’ve used mine for 12 years Now, and I have only cleaned it’s “thoroughly” about once every 1-2 YEARS. The rakes are rusted, but I’ve never had any issues with it not working. The only thing I do is scoop out the saturated crystals once a week/ and top up with loose crystals that are a lot less expensive. I can extend one cartridge for a month (for 2 cats) that way. I have honestly been waiting for it to die so I can buy a fresh one- but it just keeps working!! Lol
I've been using this for at least 10 years, with no issues. I scrape out the saturated crystals weekly, and remove the dried poop and then add loose crystals (that I buy separately) to really extend the life of each tray. I also add zeolite crystals that are used for fish tanks, as it neutralizes ammonia and is pretty inexpensive. You have a great channel here!
This was an info packed video. I've been wondering about these PetSafe litter boxes. I have heard some things about them but it's good to see a full review! Great stuff.
We had a PetSafe Scoop Free for our two cats for the longest time. We thought it did a pretty good job. Last month it finally started giving out and we are weighing our options for a new one. We don't know if we are going to stay with PetSafe or not. This was a helpful video for us though. All these review videos are great. Thanks for sharing.
You continue to exceed my expectations, Thank you for the hard work you put into everything, My special thanks to you for doing a great job on this video.
If your cat urinates frequently it can get quite messy. Especially if you have multiple cats. Also the crystals tend to cost much more. Arm Hammer Slide not only winds up saving me money but it also does an amazing job of masking any type of odor at all. I believe the Scoop Free will come with a pack of crystals. I recommend trying it out and seeing how it works for your cat. If you feel like you'd like an alternative this is the way to go! The slide makes it easy to clean and it clumps up amazingly. Other litter tends to get stuck which is a big issue. You must buy the reusable tray on amazon to use a normal litter though. I use the Forever Litter to be specific. Hope this helps!
This is a great review! Thank you for being so thorough and really providing the big picture on all of your reviews. I have a 10 year old Torti who has started using the litter box more and more - so this review has really helped me be more comfortable with switching her system! Thank you again!!! -Joshua and Zoey
I know this is an old video, but the reusable tray is an option now that cuts way down on the cost of the litter trays. You can use any crystal cat litter of your choosing. Even Petsafe brand is cheaper to buy by the bag then buy their disposable litter trays.
what is your routine with the reusable tray? I have one kitty and I want to invest in the reusable try just not sure how often I should be replacing the litter and how often I should do a full clean?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. This is my second, and I only bought the new one because I didn't want to risk my new kitten avoiding it because it smelled like my previous cat. One tiny little issue, though, has emerged in the past few months. I think they may have reduced the amount of litter in the replacement trays. Instead of lasting 20-30 days (it was usually about 3-3.5 weeks) it now becomes noticeably stinky at about 2.5 weeks. If you're also experiencing shorter than expected tray life, that might support the idea that they've cut the weight of the crystals included in trays. I recommend this all the time, though, because of the ease of changing out the trays and how sanitary it is overall. I have the Ultra, and pro-rated over the lifetime of as cat, it's worth it.
Really good & thorough info. We decided to get one & we’re very happy with it especially with now there’s less odour. We have the reusable trays & it’s definitely cheaper.
3 black cats, 2 littermaids (newer) 1 litterpan. I use Fresh step crystals, been doing so for 17 years. Littermaids last between 12-17 yrs. System works for me. One of our cats (19yo) has hyperthyroidism, so we change the litter weekly.
this is my cats first week with it and we like it so far! this is my first time owning a cat (we've been together for 6 months) and we have done so much experimenting with boxes and litter. what i have done is opened and scooped the solid waste out of its holder to help with the odor control and its been so nice to only have to scoop the litter box once so far. i agree with it not being deep - my cat really likes to dig and cover his waste so i do have to sometimes take a scoop and adjust the litter for him. i think next time when i use the reusable tray i will add a little more of the litter and see if that helps it last a little longer. but i will say dealing with this is sooo much nicer than clay litter and having to scoop it every day. i think having to change the litter a little more often and spending a little more will be worth it in the long run - its been in a room with the door closed and i havent smelled a thing so if your cat is like mine and you have a hard time with cleaning and keeping his litter box not smelling and youre willing to spend a little more, i would invest! we will see how long this lasts us but with one cat im hoping we will have no problems. thanks for the review and i will for sure be coming to your channel when i need cat help :)
what is your routine with the reusable tray? I have one kitty and I want to invest in the reusable try just not sure how often I should be replacing the litter and how often I should do a full clean?
I am SO glad you showed everything with this review. No coy hiding the cat poo, but letting us see the full story! When you lifted the flap at 6:25 in I literally went out loud "Wow! Thank you" So... thank you!
Just got to add I bought this off the back of your video and oddly BOTH my cats took to it instantly. To the extent that none of the other litter trays were used for days. Quite bizarre but very successful. Yes the litter trays and being crystal it is WAY worse t han the previous stuff I use (a wheat based one) but so little effort to maintain. Amazing.
We've used this litter box for years, but I am finally going to get a new one. The disposable litter trays are 50% more expensive now than they were a year ago. My mom switched to the resusable tray (with some litter designed for sensitive paws for her senile declawed rescue cat) and really likes it. I personally am going to switch to the Tidy Cats Breeze system with pine pellets. If I have to actually clean a litter box again, I'd rather have a manual system that is easier to fully clean. I loved PetSafe for a long time; it makes it feasible for someone like me with mild cat allergies to have a cat and not have symptoms. But at this point, I just don't think it is worth the cost.
My cat tooo! not sure how to train him out of it as soon as he hears it start to clean he goes into attack mode and goes inside the litter and throws a bunch of the silica litter around! I ended up having to clean the floor all the time and stand by defending the machine while it cleans! I suspects he thinks it's a game! If anyone has any advice!!
wow, this video was just AMAZING!!!! thank you so much for 1) keeping it short and STRAIGHT to the point then most posters who blab on and on and 2) also covering the other options and "bells and whistles"!! have u by chance used the hooded features (either side or top entry) and can offer any thoughts on that? I'm only thinking to get those to prevent any tracking, but from ur video I see u mention there isn't that much anyways, so I'm wondering if I should even spend the extra $30 bucks to get them. thanks again for a PERFECT video and review!! :)
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you found the video helpful. To answer your question, we haven't used the hooded or top-entry versions of this litter box, so I can't give any experience-based insights on whether or not they're necessary to control scatter. That said, if this is something really important to you, you may want to make the investment, since you can't add a hood to the open box later. Hope this helps!
I love this litterbox and bought the reusable tray for it to reduce the longterm expense. I use the Fresh Steps Fresh Scented Non-Clumping Crystal Cat Litter with it, which works better than the PetSafe litter in my opinion.
I was wondering about using another type of crystal litter. We love the Petco SoPhresh brand of crystal litter for our regular boxes so I might give it a try and if it's not successful, go with the one you recommend
@@Creolelady98 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01J5GE3GQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_ea24FbS54P0YP That's the one i bought but it was the last one at the time. You can just use a similar tray that fits if you find one but you void the warranty if you do.
what is your routine with the reusable tray? I have one kitty and I want to invest in the reusable tray just not sure how often I should be replacing the litter and how often I should do a full clean?
I adopted a kitten (8 weeks) this past weekend and immediately on day 1 he was okay with climbing into this and using the litter box. The noise initially startled him, but no problems so far otherwise.
Get 2-3weeks on my scoop free by adding some crystals every few days. It even then it is an efforts for me to change out the unit. Arthritis makes it difficult. Which is why I have automatic boxes. I use this one for my quarantine cage. Which is one cat a time.
We're using the spaceship Toilet, which turns around and has a drum. I'm glad you made this video and showed that this isn't a good product, especially for lager cats, like ragdolls. Great video, great review. Subbed and liked.
Thanks for the video! :) I just got this as a gift for my 2 cats and went on youtube to get an idea of what to expect. Your video gave me all those little details I was looking for that I couldn't find in the flashy reviews and stuff. I'm excited to see how my experience goes, and really like the idea of the reusable tray and a more specific litter once I have my head around how the machine goes with my cats.
Saw this message in my likes and it was funny to look back at. I love this thing, and so do my cats. Future me says: - The reusable tray is a no-brainer. I use clumping litter. - The digital counter is great for letting you know when it's time to clean. I've found it's around 15 for my cats. - It's almost too efficient and easy to clean. I have to remind myself to do a full litter replacement weekly. - Over time, my cat's have started doing their business in the same place every time, in the center of the box. I guess that's cuz they find it in the same condition every time? It's cool though, and helps keep it clean. This thing is awesome, never looking back. :)
thank you so much for your review, i was actually thinking about getting this for about a month now and today i wanted to make the decision to see if i wanted to go through with it or not. needless to say, the coincidence of the timing of your video finalized my decision lol! great review!
@@AllAboutCatsYT i ended up deciding to get it! i've been traditionally scooping my cat's litter for the 5 years that i've had her, and i have decided enough is enough lol. i've grown to resorting to a self cleaning litter box, and have been on the fence between this litter box and the litter robot. i ended up deciding to get this one instead for several reasons, financials definitely being one of the main ones lol and because i only have 1 cat so i didn't want to drop $500 just yet for 1 cat! your review was great because of its timing, and how honest it was in addition to all of the important information. i appreciate you showing and telling us the pros and cons because i definitely needed to hear it! thank you again!
You did a great job on this review! Your review helped me see that the box would not work for me and my cats - twenty-one - as I would need a good many of them and that would be way-too-much money to spend. It also would not work because it has too small of a bed for my large kitties, Meowww! Thanks again for the great review!!
Little poop left over is bad cats would be stepping all over it then smell up the house or bed....Glad I found the review I almost bought it....Its always best to do your own research first before jumping into anything....
For a couple decades I've always used a traditional litter box and "regular" litter. Since making the switch to wood pellets and a sifting litter (about $5 per 40 lb bag at home improvement stores), I've never looked back! Cheapest litter option available, dust-free, good odor control, and the pellets disintegrate when peed upon! I simply change the liner in the tub below the sifting part once every 2 weeks and replace the pellets.
I did the same thing. It is a excellent litter option. But, my cats do not like the pine litter. One of them seems like tried to hold the urine for longer time than usual. So I switched back to clay...
I have one of these, but my cat keeps attacking it. I have the one with the counter and one day I went to work and came back to find the rake had run 27 times that day! She gets right into the box and just whacks the rake, then hangs around like she doesn't trust it, inspects the rake carefully which sets off the sensor. I'm not sure if she can break it or get hurt but I leave it unplugged now...which kinda defeats the purpose.
Thanks for all the reviews for the litter box. Based on your two reviews, I will let go the automatic system. So in your opinion what is the best Litter for an adult cat which keeps odor knowing that I have a small apartment? Thanks for your help
I just purchased one. I think if you put the litter box on a shelf with the front end hanging over, you can get the rake to push the waste into a garbage bin. And just refill the internal box with whatever litter you want
what is your routine with the reusable tray? I have one kitty and I want to invest in the reusable try just not sure how often I should be replacing the litter and how often I should do a full clean?
as someone who has one, its great for one cat, costly once you have more than one. I only go it because $700 USD on a litter robot is crazy especially with its faults. this is $250 CAD. i live in such a small space that i actually just scopp my cats poop up when i am home, but when I'm not home it allows for it to be cleaned without me intervening. I do a once a week to every two week deep clean which takes 30- 1 hour depending if there's dried poop stuck to the prongs. the expensive litter is the most annoying part and the fact that the urine can start to stink after 5 days with only one cat. I will be upgrading to a LR4 in about 2-4 years, this is great as a beginner or when your tighter on funds.
I bought this product 2 months ago . The litter is not lasting anywhere near the amount of time it said it would , which you did mention. And the cat poop stinks really bad underneath the little “door” almost immediately. It does not contain any of that smell at all. I did not try the purple scented litter though. Now I am at the point I am looking into the litter robot because you said it contained odors in the drawer .
I had this litter box with the permanent plastic tray for a number of years. I now use Arm and Hammer Clump and Seal, and would never, ever go back. The crystal litter doesn’t absorb very well and cleaning the tray every week is frankly smelly and disgusting. The clumping litter is vastly cleaner and easier.
Thanks for the review, My trouble maker boy is ragdoll , I can't afford other automatic letterboxes , so I am wondering can't I just use for instance other type of silicon litter to improve the litter box functionality? , for the shallow problem also can't I just add more litter to provide much digging ability , what do you thing ? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the much needed info, in my opinion Its still kinda high maintenance if we still need to keep checking to pick out bits of left over feces and changing it out offten in my opinion plus cleaning out that whole systen. Would be better if it could be used with standard litter like other electric self cleaning litter boxes.
Not necessarily-while an open litter tray is nice, and it is less expensive upfront, the ScoopFree demands that your cat uses crystal litter, and I appreciate the flexibility afforded by the Litter-Robot. Your replacement costs also end up being expensive, and even if you're using the reusable tray, that crystal litter adds up fast.
Thanks for this review. You've convinced me to look for something else. Our cat would not like the small 'working space' of 14x14 inches. Having to replace the tray every 14 days gets the cost up over $30 a month. Don't know about anyone else but that's expensive just to dispose of cat waste and used litter. Compare that to our current method which is your run of the mill clay based 'lightweight' litter that comes packaged in a 17 pound rectangular shaped pail. That pail lasts our one cat about 8 to 10 weeks with us cleaning the litter pan twice a day and it costs only $20. Plus I have a empty bucket I can repurpose for some other use for free. :-) I'm still looking for a solution that will work for times when we want to go visit family and be gone for more than 24 hours. The ScoopFree may fit that need but there must be a solution with a more reasonable operating cost and as good or better performance than this.
@@joannarodas7813 You should be able to find it in the supermarket or places like WalMart. I have not checked but Chewy probably has it. The TidyCats brand comes in a 17# square plastic pail with a red top.
I'm with you. This litter box is not particularly good when considering all the problems with it. It's expensive although you can buy the replacement boxes at Walmart these days for about $16. Petco is selling the same box for $26. Easy choice. Our cat fills the small hidden tray in a few days. The section for the poop repository is just too small. We also discovered that our cat doesn't like it for some reason. When he uses it, he does his business and goes away. Twenty minutes later when the mechanism goes off he runs to the litter box and watches it operate. When it's done, he climbs in and paws at the litter scraping it under the cover filling the poop tray and also spreading it outside of the litter box. Once the tray is full of litter there is no room for his droppings and the mechanism starts to have trouble with the droppings. it doesn't go into the tray. And this after only a few days. I don't understand why folks are claiming that this device works for 60 to 70 cleanings by the rake. No way this litter box lasts for more than a few days unless your cat is an outside cat and only uses it periodically.
We got the latest version as a gift. Had high hopes for it but have nothing butt trouble with it.We must be doing something wrong but we can't figure out what. Seems simple enough. We put the mechanism on top of the box. The flap that holds the magnets seems to attach to the plastic cover okay. The issue we are having is that the litter ends up behind the rake. At one point it appears that the cardboard flap gets caught against the rake and the rakes pushed the poop on top of the cardboard. As the rake continues to force itself under the cardboard the cardboard snaps and flings the poop behind the rake. In looking at the space that is supposed to hold the poop, the space is about 2" long and the width of the box wide. When looking at the amount of poop that would fit inside the tray (?) it looks like it will only hold a few days worth. Have no idea how y'all think this box will hold 30 days worth. There are two plastic pins on the sides. Is the plastic cover supposed to go over or under these pins. These pins may move up and down to raise and lower the plastic cover. I don't know if our cat is just very aggressive when covering up his mess but we are finding the crystals all over the place when he is done. Sorry, but this video doesn't really explain anything about issues with the box. Videos demonstrating how easily the box works are not particularly useful. How about videos describing how to correct incorrect installation, the mechanism not working, the poop ending up behind the rake, etc..
I have the Pet Safe Ultra & use it with the disposable litter trays & I have 2 indoor cats. Firstly, indoor cats are going to use the litter tray system as their only option so the system will be used a lot more than with outdoor cats. However, I personally have found that despite Pet Safe claiming each litter tray being used by 2 cats will last 10-15 days... this simply is not the case. Fact is that I am required to change the tray approximately every 6-8days because it begins to smell really badly that the cats refuse to use it and will go toilet beside the litter tray rather than inside it. This really ups the cost as you can buy 3x disposable litter trays for £50 ($60) +£5.60 postage, but you will need on average 1x litter tray per week with each tray costing around £16.66 ($19.81) making your monthly costs £66 ($78.46) and with postage costs will put your average monthly bill just over £70 ($83) per calendar month. I also purchased the permanent reusable litter tray for my system for about £60. If you use it with bags of Pet Sates own blue crystal litter bags you get 2x on Amazon at a cost of £35 ($41) , but that still if you are changing the litter on a weekly basis going to cost you around £70 ($83) as each bag is measured for the system as a single unit. I have found if I remove half of the litter mid week (about 3-4 days of use) and ad a scoop of cheap fine grain litter, as well as empty the catchment area... that I can make each unit last a full 7 days. I tried to use the system with Catsan litter but it didnt work and the clogging blocked the rake mechanism after 2 or 3 uses. Perhaps someone has had better luck to find a suitable & cheaper alternative litter that works? To summarise- The Pet Safe Ultra is only worth it if you have a large litter budget as the system alone is pricey, but include it with disposable trays or Pet Safes own litter packs for the reusable tray youre looking at approximately £70 ($83) per month.
Tried the other expensive litter boxes. Been really happy with Petsafe Scoop free and cleaning it is really simple. So much less work than Cat Genie and Litter Robot. Bought the reusable tray for this and buy fine silica litter from the grocery store. Much less waste than using the Petsafe trays. Only recent stared hearing the rake making noise. Have to investigate that. With two cats I have to change the litter every week. I use cleaning wipes to wipe down the rakes and whole unit. I take the reusable tray outside and hose it down and scrub it with multipurpose cleaner. Our cats had no issue with acclimating to the box. Been very happy with the unit. Definitely recommend the reusable tray and buying silica litter from the grocery store.
Hi, I am a subscriber, really like all of your reviews. I have one myself with only 1 cat (6 months old). I noticed it only last about 10-14 days for me. No way it would last 20-30 days. Everything is good including odor control and it's so easy to replace. What I don't like is the litter gets scooped into the waste bin and then the main tray has a lot less litter for the cat. I end up replacing it at about 10-14 days. At $16.95 each tray, I find it very expensive. I am not going to buy a reusable tray, that defeats the purpose of owning the scoop free. I'm not going to wash and rinse and the process of dumping it also defeats the purpose. QUESTION for you. I plan to buy the litter robot 3 connect, but your opinion matters as I watch almost all of your videos. What are your thoughts? Is it better than ScoopFree? Yes, I know I will have to clean it once a month or so and it's expensive, but is it better than ScoopFree? The L-Robot3 has a large waste bin so I think I can go 2-3 weeks without emptying the tray. Thanks!
You might appreciate our video on the best self-cleaning litter boxes, which compares the two. Personally, I like the flexibility of the Litter-Robot III. th-cam.com/video/4Xzw4L3Muuc/w-d-xo.html
I've been waiting on buying this automatic litter box. I saw on Chewy they also have a cover for additional privacy. I've thought about this box along with the top only because my male cat stands to pee. If anyone out there has one (scoopfree) and their cats stands to pee too and gets pee up on the sides of the box, is there any kind of leaking via the seams? No one ever seems to mention this in anything I've read or watched. If anyone knows or has had first hand experience with this (leaking or not leaking on the seam) please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Yes, a "side peeing" cat will get urine down between the litter tray and the mechanism. It's totally open on the bottom; the drive unit just sits *around* the actual litter tray. Also, if they splash outside the walls of the drive unit, eventually some pee will get into the power plug, which will quickly corrode. You can clean it out with assorted chemicals (I use vinegar and baking soda with a more deep application of CLR about twice a year), but eventually the plug will get so damaged it no longer carries the electricity necessary to run the unit. At that point, you can either open it all the way up and break out your soldering iron, or buy a whole new unit.
I adopted my first two cats just two months ago. A friend had an old ScoopFree litter box that her cat never took to so I got it for free. I ended up buying a second one, when one of my cats was using the bathroom in other places around the house. Long story short, I don't like these boxes. I have found that the litter gets smelly pretty fast, even with two boxes for my two cats. I have reusable trays, and cleaning those is a pain. Some of the crystal litter turns into dust that sticks to the pan (which I didn't think was supposed to happen with crystals!) so it's not as simple as dumping the litter into a garbage bag, then cleaning and disinfecting the tray. There is also the matter of cleaning the actual litter box, which is a whole ordeal. I don't love the design of the box either. When I lift the box to clean it, I find litter has fallen underneath the box itself - I think this is because the tray walls are not super high, and there is a gap between the tray and the litter box itself. A final thing is that my cats are a bit messy with kicking and scattering the litter. I've purchased hoods for both boxes which limits but does not eliminate the scatter problem. Walking by and stepping on the crystals is painful and annoying! I'd have to vacuum the area 3-4 times a day to avoid that! Not so self-cleaning for a self litter box. With the mess my cats make, in addition to how cumbersome it is to clean the unit, I personally wouldn't recommend it.
how? Lol you basically just switch out the tray every two weeks otherwise you don’t pay attention to it. Would you rather scoop twice a day, change the litter every week and still have a smell?
My daughter bought this box for my furbaby. He loves it. I love it. It is a win win. Though I don't understand how the litter in the disposable trays last longer than the reusable tray. The only explanation I can give myself is the dust soaks up urine and sticks to the reusable tray. What can I use on the reusable tray for this not to happen?
@@AllAboutCatsYT I've tried baking soda. It does help with the smell but does not help with the clump of urine and crystal litter dust stuck to the reusable tray.
This was a really interesting video and take on the PetSafe auto litter boxes. I have heard some good things about them too, however, it is not quite my favorite when it comes to these boxes. I really like the ChillX Auto Egg. It's even safer than the PetSafe. Just my opinion though. Great video!
Thank you for the review. I think ill pass on this. Seems that it is a task in itself to maintain the actual liter box when it comes time, and not really excited that the rakes rust out as the previous commenters have stated from their experiences.
Definitely the Litter-Robot. It's expensive, but after testing several boxes, I've found that the Robot is the only one that does the job right every time and doesn't hold you back. The ScoopFree is good, too, but you're essentially restricted to silica gel litter, which not every cat enjoys.
i could have sworn i commented on here before.. maybe i just cant find it. but anyway! i purchased this litter box and it works like a charm. i don't use the crystals litter it comes w because i've heard very bad things about that specific litter. i use pretty litter and it is absolutely great. it halts the smell of pee, dries out the poop instantly and it isn't as apparent when the litter gets on the floor.
Been using this for a short period. Thoughts so far: * I don't know how this compares with other automatic boxes; it's my first one. I saw it highly recommended on some Google lists. * Firstly, it's been kind of a godsend. I've got a new kitten (Alice), and she used to do terrible things to her litter. I'd walk in to find the tray liner torn and balled up, and litter and poop scattered everywhere. That, plus a terrible smell. And this was especially annoying if it happened just before I was rushing to leave the house. Well, in one fell swoop, PetSafe's litter box has dealt with it. It's saved me a bunch of time each day, as well as the hassle of lugging bags of litter from the supermarket. I even have peace of mind that Alice has a "clean" tray she can use -- if, for instance, I'm at work longer than expected. * How often to change it... I think this comes down to your tolerance level for nastiness. Mallory in her excellent review uses her nose to judge. But I'm using my eye. When I look in that box, and all the crystals are saturated, and there's enough flecks of poop to disturb me, then that sucker is getting tossed. I wouldn't want Alice to have to climb in there, and I also don't want her tracking that stuff around the house. For me (with just one cat), that means I'm changing the tray every two weeks or less, which is 26-36 boxes a year. I can use the counter to help. When it's around "30", I know it's about time. Is that a lot of money? Well, to be honest, I was spending a lot more on litter from supermarket before that. Your mileage will vary... * Cleaning up... After just 30 uses, that's one seriously gross box. When you remove the lid, and get it ready to toss, the smell will hit you. You then should wipe it down... Not just the rake and around the rake, but at least along all the sides of the box as well -- poop can stick to the sides too.
Excellent video! There is one question which remains for me. Does the Scoopfree works with regular litter? If no, why then? I would like to buy the Scoopfree with a reusable tray and add regular clumping litter (for example EverClean litter) instead of having the crystal silicon litter.
Hey Nicolas, you could use it with something like Ever Clean, but my concerns would be twofold: gunking and waste receptacle overwhelm. I haven't gotten a chance to try the ScoopFree with clumping clay yet, but I anticipate that doing so would lead to clumps getting stuck on the rake and sides (again, speculatory), and the waste receptacle filling up mighty fast. You're more than doubling the amount of litter going into that waste capture area. Again, I think it would be a worthwhile experiment. If I do end up trying it, I'll let you know what happens.
@@AllAboutCatsYT Hi Mallory, Mandy thanks for your answer. I will have in about two weeks 2 Bengal kittens. There is also one thing which comes to my mind. The size of the Scoopfree is pretty small for Bengal cats. Unfortunately it does not seem that have a similar simple solution on the market which works with regular little and which is large enough for big cats. If you get to try the Scoopfree with a reusable tray, just pop me a message on my email. I would be interested to see your findings 😉 nackerma@gmail.com Cheers, Nicolas
This litter box looks like a better design than the rotating globe boxes, like Litter Robot and Petree. These automatic litter boxes are great until it’s time to deep clean them. I bought a Petree automatic box due to the lower footprint compared to a Litter Robot. Cleaning time with these globe litter boxes is a nightmare. The manufacturers say you without cleaning it for weeks or a month but in my experience within 2 weeks it needs a deep clean as there is a lingering smell. Dirty litter gets stuck in all the crevices of the machine and it smells. It’s almost impossible to empty it out without creating a mess and you’ll need a pressure washer to get all of dirt. By the time I’ve washed out the litter box it’s time to clean everything else as it is such a messy job I think poop and pee litter must be everywhere. Can’t believe I blew $400 on the Petree. It takes me 2 hours to clean properly, and it’s just not worth it.
I have a larger cat who always pees in the same place. But he seems to pee a lot. The problem is that the pee doesn't really clump, Even if I try leaving it for a few days. But it sort of sticks together a bit. Do you think that that litter would clump better than what I'm using now? Possibly? I would think it would clump better than that. I'm wondering if a 14 inch area for him to get into would be enough. he's a real good cat and always goes in the box but. He shoots some of the litter out the side. He's really not very good at covering it. And he doesn't like the smell if he takes a dump, So he comes running out when he's done and he yells at me to come in and cover it up! LOL! Did you try to use regular clumping Kitty litter, in that same box?
I have tried many automatic litter boxes including this one and they inevitably are just too small, have low sides and my cat just doesn't like the smallness of them. My cat is normal sized about 8 lbs. It seems that manufacturers are making these for humans not thinking about the cat at all. I even had the original Litter Robot (not worth the money, big and bulky) and I always return to the tried and true plastic storage tubs. High sides, easy to cut to make entrance and large enough that a normal cat can turn around in, dig, etc. Of course, if your cat will use it that is all that matters.
I'm going to try this. I bought the litter robot and its great except i think it's too shallow. Sometimes when my cats pee, the urine just pools around their paws. Then they get out with pee and wet litter dripping on their legs. Then they jump on the couch or a chair and I've had to scrub out the pee from my furniture. I had to change my sheets as well when they got pee on my sheets. This never happened before I got the robot.
If you’ve used the PetSafe ScoopFree automatic litter box, we want to hear about it! What are your favorite AND least favorite things about this self-cleaning box?
mmhm.. chocolate pebblets. How much for dat poop? :D
Thanks for this review! I’ve been wanting to buy this for my cats.
BRILLIANT!!
Thanks for your insights!
Thank you! I’ve had mine a year now. So far so good.
Love the tip about the straws!
So trying this.
What is the brand of the silicone spray, I have never heard of this before!
Just set it up.. my cat climbed in to check it out, then laid down. 20 mins later, it automatically ran, and he freaked out and hissed at it.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hahah! im so glad that the rake is very slow and the noise can be heard and cats can easily maneuver out!! mine takes 30mins to cycle
Exactly why I'm looking in to one of these! Glad I'm not alone🤣🤣

A few points that have come up over the years:
1) We did buy the plastic permanent trays, but we do also use the branded silica litter - the whole system kind of becomes pointless without it.
Thank you for leaving such an informative comment!
Please could you tell me where did you purchased the teflon rakes you are referring to?
@@NonConformistFilms We got them off Amazon, from the guy who makes the plastic "Forever Trays". He got embroiled in legal issues with Scoop Free; I don't know if he's still selling the rakes or not.

Lol

I tried this back when it fist hit the market in my area over ten years ago. You nailed it.
Thank you for sharing your experience and insights! Much appreciated.

My special thanks to you for doing a great job on this video.
Been using one of these with Arm and Hammer Slide cat litter for over a year. Works amazing and even better than the crystals!!
In what ways is it better? Just curious. Currently window shopping 😅
Yesss i want to know too
@@Pari_Pixie @Sara Giovanna
Does this product have to be paired with the gel type of cat litter or does it matter?

I know this is an old video, but the reusable tray is an option now that cuts way down on the cost of the litter trays. You can use any crystal cat litter of your choosing. Even Petsafe brand is cheaper to buy by the bag then buy their disposable litter trays.

@@monicatafoya4036 i usually use mine until the counter says 50-60!

Excellent review, I didn’t know there was a permanent tray you can get for it. And I can use my own litter. Thank you
Glad you found it helpful, Darrick!
this is my cats first week with it and we like it so far! this is my first time owning a cat (we've been together for 6 months) and we have done so much experimenting with boxes and litter. what i have done is opened and scooped the solid waste out of its holder to help with the odor control and its been so nice to only have to scoop the litter box once so far. i agree with it not being deep - my cat really likes to dig and cover his waste so i do have to sometimes take a scoop and adjust the litter for him. i think next time when i use the reusable tray i will add a little more of the litter and see if that helps it last a little longer. but i will say dealing with this is sooo much nicer than clay litter and having to scoop it every day. i think having to change the litter a little more often and spending a little more will be worth it in the long run - its been in a room with the door closed and i havent smelled a thing so if your cat is like mine and you have a hard time with cleaning and keeping his litter box not smelling and youre willing to spend a little more, i would invest! we will see how long this lasts us but with one cat im hoping we will have no problems. thanks for the review and i will for sure be coming to your channel when i need cat help :)

Amazing.
SUPER helpful, informative, and professional video. Leaving a thumbs up for sure.
Thank you!
The minute I put it on the ground he was intrigued. Then we tested out the rake made him even more interested lol
Fantastic review. Thank you for the very through pros and cons. Have the opportunity to pick one up pretty inexpensively and this helps seal the deal.
This convinced me to actually get one. Thanks!
It's the end of July 2020 and the price is currently $99 or $129 depending on which model you want
I love this litterbox and bought the reusable tray for it to reduce the longterm expense. I use the Fresh Steps Fresh Scented Non-Clumping Crystal Cat Litter with it, which works better than the PetSafe litter in my opinion.
That's what my friend says she uses with hers as well. I've been trying to decide if I want to buy one or not
Would also recommend Arm and Hammer Slide litter. Been using it over a year with the ScoopFree!
I was wondering about using another type of crystal litter. We love the Petco SoPhresh brand of crystal litter for our regular boxes so I might give it a try and if it's not successful, go with the one you recommend

Thank you very detailed. I love your mat that the box sits on. I'll have to search that out. It appears to be a catch all.
thank you so much for your review, i was actually thinking about getting this for about a month now and today i wanted to make the decision to see if i wanted to go through with it or not. needless to say, the coincidence of the timing of your video finalized my decision lol! great review!
Hey Darlene, so glad the video was well-timed for you! What was your final decision?
@@dgcaspire Hi. Since it's been a month, what is your experience with this?
Just got this for Christmas can't wait to have tidier litter room more than 1 day seems to do the job 😁🎄🎅
You did a great job on this review! Your review helped me see that the box would not work for me and my cats - twenty-one - as I would need a good many of them and that would be way-too-much money to spend. It also would not work because it has too small of a bed for my large kitties, Meowww! Thanks again for the great review!!
Cynthia, I'm so glad that it helped you make a decision! Sounds like you made the right call. Thanks for commenting.
I just want to say that I’m two weeks in with mine have three cats but still no odors and I think multiple boxes is the key thing there .
Tried this for months and I think the texture felt like poop to our cat, she started pooping outside the box.
If you're opting for a clay litter, I would recommend any of our top clumping clay recommendations here: th-cam.com/video/k6EoklcDsYE/w-d-xo.html
I just purchased one. I think if you put the litter box on a shelf with the front end hanging over, you can get the rake to push the waste into a garbage bin. And just refill the internal box with whatever litter you want
I have it and I bought the enclosure and a reusable easy to clean tray.
what is your routine with the reusable tray? I have one kitty and I want to invest in the reusable try just not sure how often I should be replacing the litter and how often I should do a full clean?
Hi☺️Thanks for all your informative videos! I would love if you could do a best Cat Tunnels video💛
as someone who has one, its great for one cat, costly once you have more than one.
Nice review. Thank you Mallory and kitty testers!
Where did you get the tray?

Would you recommend this liter box over the liter robot?
Not necessarily-while an open litter tray is nice, and it is less expensive upfront, the ScoopFree demands that your cat uses crystal litter, and I appreciate the flexibility afforded by the Litter-Robot. Your replacement costs also end up being expensive, and even if you're using the reusable tray, that crystal litter adds up fast.
Great economic analysis of the box. Thank you.
Please make a review of Popur Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Thanks.
Can I ask where you saw that lightweight litter method?
How about videos describing how to correct incorrect installation, the mechanism not working, the poop ending up behind the rake, etc..
can you use your own choice of litter and will it still function?
Thank you for a honest review
I'm just looking into the idea of this and was wondering if you have ever used the Pretty litter in this Petsafe self cleaning litter box?
Thank you so much your video was so helpful to me!!
That looks like more work than just keeping a standard litter box going.
how? Lol you basically just switch out the tray every two weeks otherwise you don’t pay attention to it. Would you rather scoop twice a day, change the litter every week and still have a smell?
I had one of the scoop free boxes the liter used caused a 3 month lung issue. As soon as I got rid of the box my lungs cleared.
you should probably put the litter box somewhere else so you're not breathing it in
My daughter bought this box for my furbaby. He loves it. I love it. It is a win win. Though I don't understand how the litter in the disposable trays last longer than the reusable tray. The only explanation I can give myself is the dust soaks up urine and sticks to the reusable tray. What can I use on the reusable tray for this not to happen?
Wow, that's a really good and interesting question. I would consider sprinkling some baking soda in there-might help!
Really heloful review to the pur. Thank you.
Thank you for the review. I think ill pass on this. Seems that it is a task in itself to maintain the actual liter box when it comes time, and not really excited that the rakes rust out as the previous commenters have stated from their experiences.
Thanks for the vid.. What is your favorite auto litter box?
Definitely the Litter-Robot. It's expensive, but after testing several boxes, I've found that the Robot is the only one that does the job right every time and doesn't hold you back. The ScoopFree is good, too, but you're essentially restricted to silica gel litter, which not every cat enjoys.
Cool this help heaps have 4 cats, for the small pieces the rake could collect, could zip tie expanded mesh or plast gutter guard to it.
i could have sworn i commented on here before.. maybe i just cant find it. but anyway! i purchased this litter box and it works like a charm. i don't use the crystals litter it comes w because i've heard very bad things about that specific litter. i use pretty litter and it is absolutely great. it halts the smell of pee, dries out the poop instantly and it isn't as apparent when the litter gets on the floor.
Been using this for a short period. Thoughts so far:
* I don't know how this compares with other automatic boxes; it's my first one.

Hi Mallory,
Mandy thanks for your answer.
I would be interested to see your findings 😉

Does it need that specific type of litter? 😊

My question is can you use any litter or do we have to use silicone litter only ?
Thanks for the review! I just bought one, gonna test it out...
8lbs!? My cat is bearly 3 lbs and he’s 3 years old 🥺
I'm going to try this.
