So I regularly just dump out the tray into a bag and then when I finally change out the whole tray (about every 3 months or so), I typically just drop the whole thing in its own kitchen trash bag and try and tie it up tight. But I like your idea of taping it closed better -- when I drop it in the bag the litter spills out in the bag and taping it just seems like a more tidy solution. I am in the same position as you now. I have two 6 month old kittens. How well has this box worked for you this past year? Is there anything I need to watch out for or take into consideration before buying it?
@@mohammedobeed714 I actually stopped using the box about a month or so after I bought it. 1) The kitties “pooped” too much and so I was having to change the sand too often. 2) The sand is too expensive. I went back to regular cat sand and daily scooping. 🙁🙂
Look for scentless crystals. Cats want to smell themselves, not lavendar or something. I bought the whole setup, but if I were to do it again I'd just by the trays, or use crystals in regular litter boxes. There is no odor. When the crystals start showing a lot of yellow, I dump them in my gravel driveway, and continue to use the box. The crystals will melt / decompose. I still follow Jackson Galaxy's advice, 1 box per cat plus 1 extra. My one extra is still clay, but they rarely use it.
We find that most silica litters work fairly well and is much cheaper. The biggest problem with this unit is the insane price of the replacement boxes or their specific litter.
@@rmreviews3000 I'm in the UK so not sure if you would have this but I use tigerino crystals. Specifically the fun pink one as it tends to work in the machine better. Weirdly it's smaller size crystals work better than some of their larger sized crystals. Still works on the same way - with one cat it can last 3 ish weeks in the scoop free.
If you go to Pet Smart you can get a three set of the Lavender for about $42. The blue is actually more expensive. Just the opposite of what he stated in the video.
The cardboard pocket in the tray where the waste is scooped is not isolated from the smell, so you still can't set it and forget it. There has to be a smell isolation system for that pocket so that you don't have to deal at all with the tray until the crystals are used up.
There is a reusable tray you can purchase. I didn't have good luck with the disposables. I also noticed that litter gets wasted if you pour it all the way to the edges. I set everything up and then I pour the litter last, so it's not getting stuck behind the rake or under the poop area and going to waste
I had one of the very first systems, it sure wasn't perfect. It certainly looks improved. It was sooooo noisy, the box leaked (on my hardwood floor 🙄_) the two cats I had a the time weren't fans. Over the years I like many others have spent a lot of money trying this and that "new" system, but my current cat likes his ModKat box so that is what I'm sticking with. I just don't find it a bother to clean the box every day plus I can see if there might be any health issues. In the end, it's not about us, but about what the cat will use. Thanks for the video.
The litter and tray have been increasing in price every few months. I had this for years but it became more expensive. I invested in the litter robot recently. Its been a lot less expensive. As a disclaimer, I have two cats. I had to replace the trays every 2 weeks. It was just too expensive.
It's not the cheapest solution for sure. I found the litter prices were high during Covid, but have stabilized again. Lots of people seem to be using alternative litter.
@@sethterwilliger9434 I've had mine for 3 months and I've had no issues with the litter robot 4. As someone who used those trays for 9 yests, the LR4 is so much better. I can't smell anything. I got it originally because I was away from home a lot. I'm home more now but I still use it along with another clay litterbox. Mine prefer using the clay but the Petsafe works as a good secondary for them and I'm not burning through as much crystal.
I will be HONEST… I worked a lot and LAZY when it came to changing the cats litter bcuz it smelled so bad…. After buying this machine I literally just close a Lid and put a new Tray and that’s it! Also this has saved me a shit lot of money in buying Litter.
Had this for over a couple of years. Works fine, would like a bigger poop cavity, my cat will fill it in a week. We have the crystals on order through Chewy...saves a few bucks and use a reusable tray.
I LOVE the cat!!!😂😂😂 I have an older model (purple). It works good. A little louder than yours though. I use a reuseable plastic pan and buy the lavender crystals also. I just can't bring myself to buy the disposable boxes. I'm curious if it would work with the tofu litter that has recently became available. Or it would cause the rake to jam.
Now I bought a robot vacum plus cleaningmop robot so it can run around the scoopfree:) cant wait for it to Come to see if its acely the Best way to have a litterbox
Crystal litter sucks. I started to use arm and hammer litter. Even though the crap sticks to the metal rack, it still covers the smell very well which requires me to do less changing of the litter. Use a box of arm and hammer if using crystal litter to aid with the smell.
The price of the trays have doubled since I purchased mines many years ago. I’m now investing in a litter robot. The scoop free always left particles behind and was messy to change.
Great video! I've been considering a litter robot 4 because that seems to be the one to beat performance wise but man If you order it with a couple accessories you're pushing a grand for a fancy box for your cat to defecate in. It's a hard sell. The current price for the lr4 bundle on Amazon is $899 and the current price for the front entry petsafe model is $169. You can buy 2.76 years worth of single use litter trays for the petsafe and the litter box itself before you reach the price of the litter robot. It might be the move🤔
I've seen the Litter Robot demonstrated and it looks great. However, it's too big for my home, so this was a better fit for me. It's not perfect by any means, but it saves me some time.
This thing is hit-and-miss. It doesn't work on wet poo which sticks to everything including the rails. It doesn't absorb urine. The cat eventually decides to pee outside the box. It's expensive to keep operating. You will find feces on the rakes, and on the plastic parts and that's one more clean up job you've got to do. Use a regular box, with unscented, clumping litter. Put baking soda in the bottom of the box to reduce the smell. Buy one of the scoops for poop removal. 😉
yes you need cats with normal bowel movements and the rake will not pick up pee. It’s not zero maintenance, but it’s less maintenance for my cats imho.
Granted I've only had this for a couple of weeks but after initial expense of $350 odd, litter tray/permanent tray/litter, I think I'll find it cost me about $40 every 2 months? I'd say that's a pretty good saving!
If this had double end cap ends where it move one direction each time to push the poop to both ends this would fix a lot of the problems you find with poop that breaks up. Having the ability to move to just one side in one pass allow there to be more time for stuff to firm up. Set the time to ever 30 mins to hour. All you would have to do is lift off the litter top which would expose a quite deep pan then scoop or dump the the entire contents. If someone made a litter box like this then I would be game for 150 bucks.
There's the Littermate system which is more sophisticated and more expensive as well. I tried another litter rake system a coupl years back, but for the price, I prefer the Scoop Free.
@@rmreviews3000 In the end I got a full warranty refund on my cat box and I spent a bit of time opening it up and fixing the wire problem that many people were having. While not the best wire job it still works and works far better than it did when we first had it. I am going to run it in to the ground until I can no longer fix it before I decide to buy a new one. I have not seen another version of the Littermate/littermaid cat boxes that are more sophisticated.
I just got this litter box. It works great but has a lot of smell - more than when I was using clumping clay litter. Is there a way to reduce the smell? Does using the purple crystals really make a big difference in the odor control?
The purple crystals are a little better. I also sprinkle in some Rocco & Roxie Odor Eliminator. It's pretty effective if the box isn't too full. amzn.to/3Y9bouW

I'm looking into getting one along with the reusable tray for my disabled mother, and modifying it to push the litter into a bin below, but since I don't have any experience with this system, I'm trying to figure out whether the flap is integral or not 😅 really enjoyed this review, loved watching your cat chew on the corner on the box lol
The flap is magnetically attached to the plastic flap. When the rake scoops up the litter, it opens up and the poop is stored in there. It closes as the rake moves back.
I have had this since 2021! I currently have one cat but plan on getting a second in a few months. Do you think I should get a second just in case or is one fine for two cats? I am moving into a studio apartment after which i'll get the second cat
i noticed that you didnt mention the cost of filters,i see they can be expensive, maybe not the right thing to but if filters cost too much thats all.overall looks to be a great system other than filters and cat litter costing also.considerating these both things might be costly,my opinion only.
I’m thinking about getting one I saw on the marketplace. Do you think it would be very helpful for a college dorm? My cat is coming with me because she is ESA and I am wondering if it would be nice as it is self cleaning.
It does make noise and might wake you up at night. It does a good job, but it will never be as good as hand scooping. You will still need to do a little maintenace every 2-3 days.
I just got this and one of my two cats loves it and has had no problems with it. My orange male cat is throwing a big fit and refuses to use the litter box. I’m really frustrated waking up every day to see poop or pee on the floor and having to clean that. Any suggestions?? Is it the scent in the litter or maybe he’s mad about sharing?? But they shared a litter box before this. I’m not sure but I’ll try the scentless litter before I make any other changes
We have a first generation PetSafe Scoop Free litter box and now we see there's a second generation. Our one cat passed away and as we prepare to get two new cats, we're considering getting a second PetSafe Scoop Free, but we don't know which gen to get. Any thoughts on that?

Not sure how to fix it, we are looking at alternatives at this moment
after you buy the litter box, are you still need to buy the bottom part regularly? It looks like just a cardboard box, right? And where you get the replacement?
Guys is this worth it? I just started working again for the first time since I've had cats and I'm working 12hr shifts 5 days a week so I'm not at the house to scoop them. Found it on Walmart without the top cover for $140 does it work well? I have 5 cats I'm wanting to get one of these to go with one of those other ones that you just roll over to clean. What are the upsides and downsides?
I'm pretty sure this isn't real lavendar. I don't think they would create a toxic product. My last cat lived a very long life using this box her entire life.
I don’t like the fact that it is not clumping. My sister used pretty litter and the litter smells so bad from the pee. Can you use clumping litter? Clay?
Have used for 6 years. We all have different tolerances of course, but I think I'm fairly sensitive and it's nothing noticeably bad after the waste solidifies and gets scooped into the compartment. I've also just used the basic blue litter, not the scented purple.
My cat doesn’t want to use it. She seems terrified by it and is only 2 years old. I tried to give her no option and only left the pet safe box out and she went all over my house instead of using it. I am now trying the method of placing her old litter box next to it to get her more comfortable and I plan to just let it get dirty. I’m just afraid she’s not going to adapt to this and I’m not sure what else to do or how long to give it.
My cat was scared of it for a while too. Turn it off, so it doesn't do anything for a month and let her get used to it. Then, when she's comfortable, using it, turn it back on, but maybe close the door so she can't see what's happening. Some cats are just generally kind of nervous. My last cat was very scared of everything, but after a few months she got used to it. When it started cleaning she used to swat it, but then she gave up after a while. Good luck!
@@rmreviews3000 just wanted to provide an update. I did have it turned off as u suggested for a couple days and now we have plugged it in. My cat is using it regularly even with it plugged in! We had bought the one with the cover but because she will only go in through the sides we will not be utilizing the cover. But I’m just happy she’s using it. Thank you so much for responding!
Thinking about buying this but have a few questions so how long can one tray last and how long can one bag of litter last with 6 cats? I seen a reusable tray for $40 but much is litter every time?
@rmreviews3000 I have 2 lol I guess my question was worded wrong I was meaning if they all used it more than the other but I ended up getting this and one of the extra large omega paw roll ones.
Great idea but the amount you have to throw away and silica crystals aren't biodegradable. If it had a proper plastic tray that could be reused for years and emptied and had a biodegradable litter then this would be amazing.
Word of caution, lavender is the most unsafe scent you can have around your cat. The vets I have worked with have all stress to me that lavender scents can set up respiratory infections in cats.
Have used this for years. My new cat pees standing up, so I’m having a horrible time with the smell because pee collects between the lid and the base. The only solution I have found is taking some plastic to the bottom of the lid so it hands downward. Not the perfect solution; It does have to be replaced every couple weeks and is time consuming. I’m hoping to find a better solution if anyone has figured it out.

You can get scented and scentless crystals.
scented crystals are fine i use it for my cats for 8 years and I’ve never had any issues with the cats not liking it.
Cats do not want to smell there poop…. That’s why they use the litter box..
We find that most silica litters work fairly well and is much cheaper. The biggest problem with this unit is the insane price of the replacement boxes or their specific litter.
What brands do you like?
@@rmreviews3000 I'm in the UK so not sure if you would have this but I use tigerino crystals. Specifically the fun pink one as it tends to work in the machine better. Weirdly it's smaller size crystals work better than some of their larger sized crystals. Still works on the same way - with one cat it can last 3 ish weeks in the scoop free.
If you go to Pet Smart you can get a three set of the Lavender for about $42. The blue is actually more expensive. Just the opposite of what he stated in the video.
Can we use pretty litter?
What is silica litter
I think it’s also cleaner doesn’t get over the floor and they also have a sensitive crystal that you can get. That’s a Tab bit softer.
The cardboard pocket in the tray where the waste is scooped is not isolated from the smell, so you still can't set it and forget it. There has to be a smell isolation system for that pocket so that you don't have to deal at all with the tray until the crystals are used up.
Thanks for the great review. Your cat was a very entertaining addition. 😀 I think I am sold on this device.
My cat is endlessly entertaining!
My niece gave me one yesterday for and I set it up today. She’s very interested in it ! I hope she uses it
Now that you’ve had it for a while, how is it functioning for you? I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews about them not working right. 😬
I love the video. You explain every detail. Thanks
Very informative--but the cat is the star of the show!!
There is a reusable tray you can purchase. I didn't have good luck with the disposables. I also noticed that litter gets wasted if you pour it all the way to the edges. I set everything up and then I pour the litter last, so it's not getting stuck behind the rake or under the poop area and going to waste
There are some good trays available.
Thanks for the overview. Cute cat!
He's a rascal!
the cat trying to lay in the box is just killing me 😂😂
He’s a funny one
@@rmreviews3000 they only do that when they feel insecure actually. Look up jackson galaxy for help with cat issues.
Whatever works for your cat and you is the best litter box!
Your costar really made this video top-notch! 😅
He’s a rascal! He loves being on camera
Just so I know I bought a litter robot worked great for a month now just a bunch of errors and half rotations. A big piece of garbage send it back now
@@sethterwilliger9434 I've had mine for 3 months and I've had no issues with the litter robot 4. As someone who used those trays for 9 yests, the LR4 is so much better. I can't smell anything. I spend so muchh less a month and my cats have had less accidents. I wouldve contacted supoort, they probably wouldve sent you a new unir or replaced your LR
@@sethterwilliger9434 they have a 1 year warranty
I LOVE the cat!!!😂😂😂
I have an older model (purple).
It works good. A little louder than yours though.
I use a reuseable plastic pan and buy the lavender crystals also.
I just can't bring myself to buy the disposable boxes.
I'm curious if it would work with the tofu litter that has recently became available. Or it would cause the rake to jam.
Saturn is adorable! You can see more of him at youtube.com/@vacuumnerds
Use a box of arm and hammer if using crystal litter to aid with the smell.
good to know
The price of the trays have doubled since I purchased mines many years ago. I’m now investing in a litter robot. The scoop free always left particles behind and was messy to change.
How do you like the Litter Robot now compared to the Scoopfree?
@@LemonMintStudio I still like prefer the litter box. It’s easier to clean and I don’t have to buy those expensive trays. Smells better.
@LemonMintStudio I haven’t tried the litter robot
That orange kittie is a Sweetie!!!!
He's a little devil!
Thank you for this great video- I just purchased utilizing the link you have provided!
OMG. I LOVE THIS CAT SO MUCH!!!!!!
You can see more of him at Vacuum Nerds on Tiktok =) He's adorable. His brother is more shy though!
you can get a plastic tray for it so less waste. I hated replacing the whole box each time.
I’m just here for The Adorable 🥰 Cat 🐈
There's a lot more of both my cats on my new vaccum review channel youtube.com/@vacuumnerds
Thank you! Great review!
Just saw your video, are you able to use regular litter for these or does the litter have to be the Cristal litter?
You need to use some kind of crystalline litter.
Very informative video. Thank you!
I was gonna say, you need a cat with consistently firm bowel movements for this to work, otherwise it's just going to stir littler and shit together
yes you need cats with normal bowel movements and the rake will not pick up pee. It’s not zero maintenance, but it’s less maintenance for my cats imho.
I am curious about cleaning the automatic pooper scooper. In reality how much poop gets stuck on there and how easy or hard is it to clean.
Poop will get stuck there from time to time, so you do need to clean it. I use a damp paper towel every few weeks or if a chunk gets stuck.
I put my own hood on because its the original scoopfree and it fits perfecly with 6 pieces of tape i acely used acrylic shapes as tape didnt have Any.
@@kameljoe21 Glad you got it solved
I just got this litter box. It works great but has a lot of smell - more than when I was using clumping clay litter. Is there a way to reduce the smell? Does using the purple crystals really make a big difference in the odor control?
The purple crystals are a little better. I also sprinkle in some Rocco & Roxie Odor Eliminator. It's pretty effective if the box isn't too full. amzn.to/3Y9bouW
Do you scoop poo out of the garbage holder at the end on a regular basis to prevent order?
I'll remove the poop every few days yes.
Great review!
Hello! I was wondering if you could tell me what the cardboard flap does? I'm looking into getting one along with the reusable tray for my disabled mother, and modifying it to push the litter into a bin below, but since I don't have any experience with this system, I'm trying to figure out whether the flap is integral or not 😅 really enjoyed this review, loved watching your cat chew on the corner on the box lol
The flap is magnetically attached to the plastic flap. When the rake scoops up the litter, it opens up and the poop is stored in there. It closes as the rake moves back.
Do you know if it leaves any dust around after from the cats paws after they do their business?
thank you for making the video
I have had this since 2021! I currently have one cat but plan on getting a second in a few months. Do you think I should get a second just in case or is one fine for two cats? I am moving into a studio apartment after which i'll get the second cat
I have one for 2 cats, but it needs more attention than 2 separate boxes. It really depends on how much space you have.
IF I FITS I SITS! HES SUCH A CAT! LOL
What a handsome cat 😻
He is!!
love your cat so adorable
i noticed that you didnt mention the cost of filters,i see they can be expensive, maybe not the right thing to but if filters cost too much thats all.overall looks to be a great system other than filters and cat litter costing also.considerating these both things might be costly,my opinion only.
There are generic trays you can use
ok thanks for the reply back.@@rmreviews3000
Can you put wood cat litter box fill in or always need the bleu filling
using specific sand? can use normal sand?
thank you
thanks a lot
I’m thinking about getting one I saw on the marketplace. Do you think it would be very helpful for a college dorm? My cat is coming with me because she is ESA and I am wondering if it would be nice as it is self cleaning.
It does make noise and might wake you up at night. It does a good job, but it will never be as good as hand scooping. You will still need to do a little maintenace every 2-3 days.
Hi! How big is your cat? I have a 12 pound big boy and I want to make sure there’s enough space in there for him.
My cats are both 10lb Siberians. There's enough space imho.
My 20lb fluffball has never had a problem with using it. I don't use a hood.
How easy do cats become acclimated to the crystal litter after they've only been on clumping litter?
You can mix in some crystal litter into your normal box and then mix in more. My cats had no issue with the new litter.
Ty
I just got this and one of my two cats loves it and has had no problems with it. My orange male cat is throwing a big fit and refuses to use the litter box. I’m really frustrated waking up every day to see poop or pee on the floor and having to clean that. Any suggestions?? Is it the scent in the litter or maybe he’s mad about sharing?? But they shared a litter box before this. I’m not sure but I’ll try the scentless litter before I make any other changes
Is he scared of it? Maybe introduce it with the rake turned off for a couple of weeks.
We have a first generation PetSafe Scoop Free litter box and now we see there's a second generation. Our one cat passed away and as we prepare to get two new cats, we're considering getting a second PetSafe Scoop Free, but we don't know which gen to get. Any thoughts on that?
There isn't a huge difference in generations in my experience. The first gen is cheaper and it works pretty well.
Does it seal to keep bugs away?
I had mine for 3 years, now I realized its not doing good in oder control anymore. It basically doesn't scope the no.2 into the cabins anymore, it just scoop them from one end of the box to the other. and I found the cabin where suppose to contains no.2 is full of clean crystals. Not sure how to fix it, we are looking at alternatives at this moment
I used Rocco and Roxie to reduce the smell. It does a decent job, but if your unit isn't working properly this won't help amzn.to/3SqPxxw
Can I just use the litter and scoop out or does it dissolve on its own
pee is absorbed. solid waste needs to removed.
Do the off brand cheap crystal litters work with this ?
Yes - these So Phresh crystals work pretty well: amzn.to/3H47i0K
Gorgeous cat 🐈
He's a handsome boy!
after you buy the litter box, are you still need to buy the bottom part regularly? It looks like just a cardboard box, right? And where you get the replacement?
I reuse the carboard try about twice and then I get new ones on amazon here:" amzn.to/3o4F9Aw
Very interesting ! Can you please tell me the real inner size the cat will have... As I have 2 giants, it seems a bit small 😞
I saw another review video that said it was 14" x 14" and comments of cats up to 20 lbs using it.
Interior is around 16x19. My cats are around 10-11 lbs each. One is quite tall, but he fits ok.
Gorgeous Cat❤️ Great Review
can you use normal litter sand??
You need crystal style litter
Guys is this worth it? I just started working again for the first time since I've had cats and I'm working 12hr shifts 5 days a week so I'm not at the house to scoop them. Found it on Walmart without the top cover for $140 does it work well? I have 5 cats I'm wanting to get one of these to go with one of those other ones that you just roll over to clean. What are the upsides and downsides?
fantastic video! watch out though lavender is dangerous for cats
I don't think it's real lavendar. It's just scented. My cats have never had any issues.
Isn't lavender (including the scent) toxic to cats?
I'm pretty sure this isn't real lavendar. I don't think they would create a toxic product. My last cat lived a very long life using this box her entire life.
I don’t like the fact that it is not clumping. My sister used pretty litter and the litter smells so bad from the pee. Can you use clumping litter? Clay?
I don't think clumping litter will work with this. I'd try another crystal style litter.
Don't the feces and pees smell if unremoved for 2-4 weeks?
With one cat, I found it will go 3+ weeks. 2 cats, maybe 2ish weeks. It depends on the age of your cats and how much they they.
Are there generic trays that are cheaper and overall perform similarly?
Yes - this one is pretty well reviewed, although I have not tested it personally amzn.to/3SzXrF7
Thanks, I’ll try it out!
What is the link please?

I see there are different color ways, brown, purple and grey fronts. Is there any difference in this?
No mechanical difference afaik.
Hello, so what is the major difference between the old PURPLE style and the NEW grey style..? Any improvement..?
I think mainly the counter. However, it's a been a while since I had the old one so I'm not sure.
Does it reek of odour though?
No, odor control is pretty good with their crystals. Definitely equal to any good quality litter.
Have used for 6 years. We all have different tolerances of course, but I think I'm fairly sensitive and it's nothing noticeably bad after the waste solidifies and gets scooped into the compartment. I've also just used the basic blue litter, not the scented purple.
Before throwing that away. There was alot of unuse crystals in that litter box . You could of re scoop the litter
The day I shot the video, that's the way it was.
She refuses to go in through the front because she knows that is what lifts when it rakes.

6 cats - That's definitely too many for a single box
@rmreviews3000 I have 2 lol I guess my question was worded wrong I was meaning if they all used it more than the other but I ended up getting this and one of the extra large omega paw roll ones.
Hi, I wonder if you can review our products.
Send us an email
Great idea but the amount you have to throw away and silica crystals aren't biodegradable. If it had a proper plastic tray that could be reused for years and emptied and had a biodegradable litter then this would be amazing.
You can get a re-usable plastic try, but the silica crystals are not recyclable.
Distracted by the orange fur face lol
Crazy that he has 2 cats but got those dogs out. Lol😂
