You have done an amazing job in raising her and she has come so far. She is a wonderful, heartwarming story and so appropriate doe the upcoming holiday season. Hi Jackie - it's great to hear from you! Thank you for your kind words about Squeak and Defiance. Poor Squeak has been through so much ever since we lost her sister Lulu to heatstroke back in the summer. So many changes for our feisty little Squeak, but I will do my best for her. And I am so grateful too for Defiance's strong personality that helps her embrace life. So resilient and smart - I suspect might have already been on her way to top hen if she'd hatched out healthy! Thank goodness she trusts me a lot and is so good because I have to do a lot to help her and her patience and understanding makes all the difference - especially during beak and toe nail trims! She makes me laugh. So feisty but so sweet. And thanks for mentioning Hilary Avis - i had seen her books but not read them yet, but now I really must do so! Have a wonderful day.
Miss your videos, since this was posted I hatched out 3 precious boys from shipped eggs. You know they're a handful, but like Mr. Snuggles, they are super cute. They are just the sweetest chickens, our outdoor standards are way less friendly, even after handraising the ungrateful birbs :p Thanks for bringing us on your Serama journey, it was a delight, and now I'm on my own :)
Thank you Rosemary for your kind wishes. Her breathing is a bit better after a few days indoors but I think I want let her out into the cold again until I'm sure she's doing well (fingers crossed) - but she might have something to say about that. We'll see if she gets fusssy about wanting to return outdoors. Sadly I think the vent gleet weakened her system so she got a secondary bacterial chest infection, but fingers crossed that she will be on the mend with some TLC. They really can be so delicate when they get ill. Wishing you all the best
Defiance is looking great!!! My new little rooster got along fine w Chickenboy, until little feller got interested in the hens... I had to keep an eye on them for a while and seperate them occasionally, but they have learned to get along and I can go off and leave them un-supervised now (no fighting allowed)
Thanks John. I am so glad your roosters are getting along now and they sorted out their squabbles. Thanks for telling me that little story - I am always intersted to hear how things are working out elsewhere. In my case my flock is so small and I also worry about Defiance (our disbaled hen) getting too much attention from even one rooster let alone two so will have to stick with one rooster. We had such a friendly little guy in our last batch, two in fact who I owuld have LOVED to keep, but couldnt. Do keep me updated how your flock is doing adn if your roosters continue to be buddies. All the best!

Hi Monika, great to hear from you. These poor chickens in the cold rainy season - some of them definately do not like it! Sweet Pea, Precious and Mr Snuggles are all very fluffy and dont seem to mind too much, but poor Squeak and Defiance are not as fluffy! They are loving being indoors with me right now. Getting very brave hopping around and pecking at my computer keyboard! And Squeak is no longer breathing so heavily - she is on the mend. Thanks for your well wishes. Hope you and the family are doing well. All the best.
I love seeing your beautiful chickens 💛 I'm glad Squeaky is recovering. Last month my rescues had colds too (seemed like it) strange to hear Holly sneezing, I was worried as she's getting old and in case it spread to the silkies, but they were fine. I bring mine in for a cuddle - but they make a right mess! 🐔👍
Thank you! I'm glad yours recovered from their colds.Isnt it weird hearing chickens sneeze? I never even knew it was a thing they could do before that. Hopefully Squeaky will have a nice recovery in the house and be ready for life outdoors again by the time she goes out. I do feel so sorry for chickens in our loooong british winters. I have been surprised at how happy they are in the house even though Squeak is on the mend, when she usually starts to return to her usual feisty self. Luckily, theyre smart enough to know what is good for them, I think. At some point I'll get tired of the mess though - they may be tiny but boy do they like to scatter food and woodchip everywhere!
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 yes Holly's sneeze sounded more like a quack!! Ginger is hunched & hasn't laid for a week, so I'm thinking of giving her an epsom salt bath & blow dry - they do make a terrible mess in the house, lucky I'm not house proud!
Defiance grew up! And she is such a beauty! Squeak looks a lot darker color. I'm so sorry to read here in the comments of Lulu's passing. Does Defiance now live in the house? I've loved that little darling since day one xx
Hello Mrs R.K. What a delight to hear your voice and see the seramas ! Hope you don't mind me being curious, but do you give little Squeak any supplements or vitamins when she is not feeling well ? She does look very tired, those days inside will do her some good . Little Defiance is one very special chick, love the way she listens to you ! Sending many hugs your way, have a lovely evening . 😊
Hi Louve, wonderful to hear from you. I've been doing a lot of reading on what causes 'colds' in chickens (its a common bacterium in the garden rather than viral like for us humans) - and while it is possible to get antibiotics for it, I don't want to go down that route for her yet because she's only just recovering from vent gleet and the antibiotics will ruin whatever good gut flora she has managed to regenerate and might bring the vent gleet back even worse. Right now I am relying on warmth and her own immune system, and can give aspirin if she seems in pain. (She doesnt.) Plus a decongestant as well. And a high density nutritional supplement (vitamins and minerals) which she does NOT like the taste of and isnt shy about letting me know it! Her breathing has eased a lot since coming in the house and I plan to keep her in for as long as she needs. The poor thing. She's being quite lively so far and I hope it continues. She gets her own hot (warm) water bottle at nights too 😂 I'm always open to suggestions if anyone has other advice I've not thought of. How are the booties coming along for your little granddaughter? It still makes me smile to think your first grandchild is on her way. Wishing you all the best! Sending a hug.
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 Well, Little miss Squeak is in great hands ! The booties , hat and blanket are finished, they will be washed tomorrow morning, dried and nicely wrapped after tomorrow . And... she will be my 3rd grand child ! 😊
@@louverousse9023 Ah yes, I remember now you said the first on your husband's side. How lovely. Am sure those booties, hat and blanket will be especially useful for the coming winter and will be cherished for many years to come. 🙂

I think mine think I exist to give them treats. Certainly my rooster likes to peck my boots to demand them in a most bossy manner! He is hilarious!
She's actually enjoying it. I live in Boron, a little town in the Mojave Desert. We mainly have her in the house due to the fact that we have a lot of stray cats running around our neighborhood. Plus, depending on what time of the year it is, the weather here can be pretty extreme. She feels that she has to be by my side all the time. In fact, she somehow senses that I'm about to leave the room if my hand is on the doorknob. She'll start making a sound similar to the egg song. It's pretty funny, in my opinion. And don't worry, I try to make sure that she can spend some time outside to stretch her legs (with supervision, of course.)
wow! 26 is a lot to lay and not go broody. Is she young? Or is she is a breed that doesnt tend to go broody often? Otherwise warm weather and plenty of food helps them to go broody, plus a safe place to sit on the eggs where she is undisturbed. If she has started sitting, maybe it will happen soon. It might be normal that she takes a few days before she fully settles. Good luck!
i really hope that squeak gets better mr.snuggles as cut as always defiance looks amazing and i wander where lulu is i really miss her and haven't seen her in a long time
Hi Gabriel, thanks for you kind words! Thank you for remembering Lulu. Sadly she passed away in the summer from heatstroke. It was sudden and a shock, and the flock did miss her and me too. I'm so sorry you've missed her and to give you this sad news - but thanks so much for remembering her fondly. That means a lot. You are kind. I had meant to speak about this in my previous video but I forgot because the memory makes me sad. She was such a sweet chicken. But i like to think she and her sister Artemis are both keeping each other company and happy in a next life. Wishing you all the very best.

Hi Kylie, sadly I cant keep the baby cockerels. I will only be keeping Mr Snuggles. Too many roosters get very loud and boisterous when they get older, and I live in an urban area with neighbours who will not like the noise. Plus the roosters will all want hens of their own so cannot be kept in a mixed flock unless there are around ten hens per rooster (this number is the general rule of thumb). Without enough hens the roosters will end up fighting and/or the hens will end up overbred and stressed. I especially cant keep 2 because Defiance, with her disabled leg, may end up getting injured if there are to many roosters. They are very sweet and I would have loved to keep them, but cant. I only wish some of them had been pullets!
Hi Sonic, sad news I am afraid. Poor Lulu passed away of heatstroke in the summer. I had meant to mention it in my last video but it got missed out - probably because I still miss her and so it's sad to think about. The flock missed her too, especially Mr Snuggles whose favourite she was, and Squeak whose sister she was. Thank you so much for remembering her. It means a lot. After she passed away I tried to hatch out some more chicks from her sister Squeak to remember her by but they have all become cockerels - no hens. I may try again next year when Spring comes. Wishing you all the best.
Hi Elvie, thank you for remembering Lul. I had meant to mention in my last video that Lulu had passed away in the summer from heatstroke. The flock missed her a lot and so did I. I like to think she's joined her sister Artemis and they are happy together now. It means a lot you remembered her. Wishing you all the best.
Hi Varshith, you are remembering the last hatch in late April when they hatched 6 babies. 5 of them turned out to be roosters and were given away. One of them is Defiance. She is 6 months old now. The chick who grew up with her also turned out to be a boy in the end. The chicks in this video and the video from last week are 3 months old and they are a new batch of chicks which hatched in early August. Only 4 hatched and all of them are roosters again. (I might try to post a video of the last bunch of chicks growing up so you can all see what you missed seeing while I wasnt uploading.) Also, thank you for remembering my other hen Lulu. You have a great memory. She passed away from heatstroke in the summer, which was very sad. Luckily the other chickens were all okay. We missed her, poor Lulu. It is so nice that you remember her. All the best.
Hi. Are you ready for the next chicken lockdown? I'm guessing it's going to start again in December. And I think you may want to check precious for lice as she's shaking her head a lot.
Hi Cornish - I only heard about the potential lockdown yesterday but thanks for mentioning it! Yes, all things are in place for a lockdown but poor Mr Snuggles in NOT going to like it. He has also become an escape artist so I am going to have to secure the run properly. And thanks for mentioning about Precious. I havent noticed any lice, but they are so hard to spot arent they?! I have invermectin on hand and they will get their winter doses from tomorrow. Thanks again for mentioning it. I appreciate it 🙂 Are you all prepared for the lockdown? How do your chickens cope with it? I always feel so sorry for them in winter because they do love to dustbathe and cant most days - I gave them a sandtub but they are not fans!
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 last lockdown I had 5 chickens in the greenhouse. Now I have around 40 lol. Well the cockerel enclosure is ready as it has a very fine mesh on the top. The others 2 ill need to put a tarp or a more fine mesh over and the chicks will just have to grow in the greenhouse. And lice prefer to be near the neck, under the wings and near the vent and they're quite small.
@@cornishchickens6778 Oh wow! 40 chickens! Last year's five were very lucky with all the space. I hope all goes well. It sounds like you are prepared. Thanks for the tips about the lice - I do tend to check under their wings regularly. I really hope she hasnt got any - I had thought she was shaking her head from getting rain on her that day - but you never know. If they are then the drops tomorrow will sort it out. Thank goodness!
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 I had one with lice recently and would shake her head the same amount precious was. Better safe than sorry though. I thought I was going to lose mine as she was ill as well.
@@cornishchickens6778 Agree. Much better safe than sorry. Everyone will be getting their treatment all at once tmorrow. I hope your chicken was okay in the end, the poor thing? They're so good at hiding their illnesses that once we spot it they're often much iller than we'd like.

After she passed away I tried to hatch out some more chicks from her sister Squeak to remember her by but they have all become cockerels - no hens. I may try again next year when Spring comes. Wishing you all the best.
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 awwwww i'm going to miss her but at the same time she gets to be with her hen mom again
@@TheSonicJnr Thanks Sonic. And she gets to be with her sister Artemis again too.
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 no problem and, ARTEMIS that's who I was thinking of with Defiance
There is lulu??????🤔🤔🤔🤔
Hi Elvie, thank you for remembering Lul. I had meant to mention in my last video that Lulu had passed away in the summer from heatstroke. The flock missed her a lot and so did I. I like to think she's joined her sister Artemis and they are happy together now. It means a lot you remembered her. Wishing you all the best.
why dont you post anymore
There were 6 chicks hatched by them there are four roosters and 1hen where is another one chick and another hen
(I might try to post a video of the last bunch of chicks growing up so you can all see what you missed seeing while I wasnt uploading.)
Also, thank you for remembering my other hen Lulu.
Where is lulu
Hi Varshith, I think I may have replied to your question in the comments of another video. But in case you didi not see it, thank you for remembering Lulu. Sadly she passed away in the summer from heatstroke. It was so sudden, and the flock did miss her and me too. Thanks so much for remembering her fondly. That means a lot. You are kind. I had meant to speak about this in my previous video but I forgot because the memory makes me sad. She was so sweet. I hope she and her sister Artemis are flying high, happily together in a next life. Wishing you all the very best
@@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 ok it is so sad 😔
@@naturallifes1734 THanks Varshith. Sadly these little chickens can be so fragile. Take care
