    To regular viewers - thanks for your patience on the slower upload schedule. I am continuing to record videos for you so that you can see the chicks grow up! All the best :-) .
    This video shows day 22 of the hatching story as our young seramas settle into trying to hatch out some eggs for the first time. Precious and Sweet Pea are just 8 months old. I've uploaded videos for the entire three weeks of the brooding process and the many serama dramas throughout, and will continue to upload videos so you can see the chicks growing up and settling into the flock. Fingers crossed for everyone to get along!
    If you liked this video, below is a video of Sweet Pea and Precious being brooded and hatched out by their mum Artemis (Day 1 to 22): www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5VCj

      Thank you! I'm glad the hens trust me with their babies. They have ben so good. Even Artemis from our last hatch in August was a bit more wary than these two, but these two were handraised by me from chicks so they are more at ease. Mr Snuggles always makes me laugh. He is always trying to challenge a little to be 'top rooster' again, but takes it in his stride when I train him. Hopefully he will realise they are his chicks and he will do his duties to guard them! Fingers crossed.

      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mr Snuggles was so funny with his dustbath. it was the first time I had seen him dustbathe since he was a baby - I think he prefers to dustbathe in the sandbox inside the run when he is relaxed and feels his ladies are safe. First tiem dutbathing outdoors and he was loving it! And yes, totally agree aboutnot breaking Precious's little heart. I know from Artemis that they don't forget their chicks as easily as people think - they really are attached. I had to consider separating Artemis because it was too cold for the chicks outdoors but I was worried Artemis would not want to be cooped up indoors. In the end I found she was far happier with her chicks and them with her so I did a balancing act letting her have supervised outside time all together before bringing them back in. They definately do not forget their chicks easily. I will keep an eye to make sure everyone gets along since their are two mothers now...

    Hi, I have chickens of my own and I have a suggestion. sweat pea and precious will not fight over the chicks if u make them bond. and if u want to you can switch chicks around with each mother so they get used to both because I am sure they must have heard sweat pea snd precious when they were in their eggs. so you don't have to separate the chicks but don't do it straight away there needs to be a bonding process. ty hope this works because it worked for my chickens! (you don't have to do it if u don't want to just a suggestion (: )

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266

    So exciting!! Congrats on the new chicks!! Chicken watching is definitely therapeutic! Make sure to monitor the broodies closely especially at dusk and dawn to make sure the babies are safely tuck under them and the mamas have not abandon the unhatched or hatching eggs. If one of them starts leaving the nest, place the hatching/unhatch egg under the broody that is still setting.

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266
      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carrot, thanks for mentioning it. The mothers had the egg shells beside them all night but did not eat them because they were not hungry enough - I had been making sure to feed them on the nest so they didn't want them. I can totally understand that under normal circumstances when the hen may have been on the nest for 2 or 3 days without food to oversee the hatching that she would be famished enough to eat the shells! Thanks for caring. All the best.

(I didn't realise until the next day.) At the time of filming I had not realised what the problem was, but I thought it was worth pointing out for viewers in the videos as a learning experience. As soon as I fully realised it, believe me I had major anxiety too! 😭 I will share with you and other viewers whatever the outcome will be. Take care now. th-cam.com/video/AAP1vQ88y6w/w-d-xo.html

    Found you videos looking for information about hatching under a broody. I have a surprise broody and she and I running an experiment to see how it goes. Thank you so far you are the most inclusive of information about what I should be seeing. Still not sure if my girl should be still turning eggs on estimated day 19. However watching your videos has relived me of some of my worries. Oh I set a motion sensor camera up in my brooder coop just to make sure my girl ok. I hope your splayed leg baby doing better.

      Hi Carrie, wonderful to hear from you and so glad my videos have helped. I remember searching youtube for the same thing the first time I was hatching eggs under a broody, and it's wonderful to know my videos have found someone in the same sitaation. Good luck with you hatch! How exciting? Any more news yet? I also wondered the same about my broody hen moving the eggs on the last few days when we are told incubators should go into 'lockdown', but I guess a hen knows what she needs to do. Mine moved theirs all the time towards the end, even after the chick had already pipped. And in an incubator the first hatched chicks would soon be stumbling over the still hatching eggs. I hope yours will be fine. Best wishes for some healthy little peeps and a great first-time mama hen! Your camera must be a great tool to help you check how things are going. I was especially keen on checking if first my time mums might get confused and attack their chicks, but my girls were luckily fine, and my fingers are crossed for all to go smoothly with yours!

      @@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 I saw your message just as I was heading out to the coops! I removed my broody as I normally do to let her eat ect and I saw 3 eggs pipping! None of them are making a sound but one of the eggs was rocking back and forth. Crossing fingers my little Easter eggers eggs pip soon. I will keep spying on her through the night 😂. And yes she is still moving all the eggs. Thank you again, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right things and I never candled so there was no way to tell. Crossing fingers 3 healthy babies in the morning.

      Thanks Tanish. My mum also said to give all chicks to one hen, but I would feel sad for the lonely hen if I did that. I shall try to let them both raise the chicks together and see if they will share, that way the babies will have twice the care from two mums! Let us wait and see who ends up being a better mum. So hard for me to tell right now. Thanks for thinking of them. Have a great day.

      Hello, I just say Sweet Pea is yellow but some people might say she is buff - she certainly looks like the buff orpingtons I have googled, but she is a little serama. I hope we get a chick like her but it will be weeks until we will be able to tell.
      I have heard that serama eggs can be difficult to incubate (maybe due to their small size and humidity variations impacting them more perhaps? So do try it with a broody mama - I would love to hear if that solves your problems. I hope it works for you! Please do let me know if it works. Also, I have found some great discussions of serama egg incubation on the backyardchickens forum. You might try seeing if any advice there works for you.
      Also, I checked out your videos quickly just now and they are so lovely too see. You have a wonderful space for your chicken flock! So glad you are joining the youtube chicken-lovers family! All the best to you and your family.

    Is that squeaky & squeak that look alike? 2 of my brown sis's are identical and one needs a leg band so I can tell them apart! Now I want to let 1 of my chickens have babies!

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266
      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to not be able to tell the difference between Lulu and Squeak, but have figured out that Squeaks tail has much more grey in it than Lulu. Lulu is also a little rounder in shape, but sometimes they don;t look that different. If I had identical ones, I would be tempted to use a leg band too! I know what you mean about being tempted to have more chicks! Even I feel that way while I already have chicks. When you have chicks do you find it means more work? I adore mine, but I do wish I had a larger enclosed area in the garden to let them roam free with their mamas tot heir heart's content. without it they must settle for being free only when babysat!

      @@r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266 Whenever I have chicks, I let them stay with me in the house (on the hardwood floor) until they start flying over the baby gates and crapping on the carpet, by then they can fly up to their roost in the garage (I sweep a lot hehe) Last time I let Mama have 3, and 2 were roosters, so I had to find a good home for them (Chickenboy is top Roo). I've found that 2 roosters can get along OK if there are plenty of hens, but more then 2 is asking for trouble, since they share their quarters and I'm not always there to break it up if they start going at it.

    Aw. Cute you have 5 now. How can you tell the sex with just day old with the combs? There's wing sexing which is a little more accurate than guessing. But how with the comb? Is it a serama thing?

    • @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266
      @r.k.dreamingspetchickens1266  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cornish, I can't tell really but was looking at the combs to see which was bigger. I think with seramas there might be a little difference even at hatch between comb size, or so I thought with Mr Snuggles having a larger comb at hatch than Precious and Sweet Pea, and he turned out to be a rooster. I dont think wing sexing works for seramas - it only works for certain breeds who have that genetic trait established I though? I am not exactly sure, but I tried with our serama chicks last time and could not see any difference. We'll have to see if my guesses on gender over the next few days end up coming true! 🙂🙂

      Hi Chaniyah - eggs are a good source of nutritoin and protein for chickens. Some people prefer to feed them cooked, but I have had no problem with egg-pecking when feeding them uncooked to the chickens. All the best.
