Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.

It appears there is an issue with the audio playback on non-stereo systems, and you can't hear the broadcast signal. Not sure why this happened, but you can hear it with headphones just fine.
Yo hey, sound engineer here. This can happen when the phase of one channel is inverted 180 degrees. It means when the left and right channels are playing one source (like a voice) they play the information at exactly same frequency and amplitude, only when one is inverted it cancels the other out. It's happened either on a recording device, in a DAW or in video production software...possibly even a cable you used was wired incorrectly. Great method! My setup is. Sony SSB with phaselock PLL so manually chasing the carrier wave is not needed(less data loss). Also, folks should know that to interpret those maps, you should have a set of about 4, each day across 3 consecutive days. I found that a set for the Pacific Mexico took about 4hrs per day, with do-overs. I now rely on Cruiser Nets on the same SSB for weather. Minutes per day, any day. They are experts and have more info. Cheers!
Looked at the whole playlist. I realized that with the advent of the girl on board the boat, Tarka became cleaner and there appeared order and comfort.

Absolutely Perfect video. Thank you. I appreciate your layered strategic approach. Displaying the animals at your feet, then sitting on your boat with human interaction while sucking up radio broadcasts, only to later upload through WiFi through Satellite technology to a guy conducting a mission in Mali for the UN. I Will keep watching.
You've inspired me- I signed up for sailing lessons, already finished part one, and I want a boat. Sailors seem incredibly 'capable, ' it is kinda intimidating, you have to know how to sail AND the other things like electronics, computers, photography, navigating, boat maintenance, etc. plus if you are solo the sleep deprivation part would really suck for me. I'm just a lowly peasant but will push forward with the dream, wish me luck everybody !

Cool, I use FLDigi quite often. Understanding it is what you have and it works, for someone else that wants to try this, an inexpensive second hand ssb radio or a quality SDR will give you almost 20db more sensitivity for the weak signals. That is a huge difference. Additionally with the SDR you could receive satellite wefax for a much clearer image.

You should look up SDR "Software Defined Radio". When I saw the frequency waterfall I thought that was what you were using. You can get a good SDR under $60 and it just plugs directly into your computer. You can receive almost ANY frequency on it. Having it directly plugged into your computer via USB also helps get clear audio. The benefit to you would be HUGE because not only could you receive the weather reports but also NOAA satellite images live. You can also use it to listen to anyone transmitting, hf vhf or uhf. LOVE the videos, just bought my first sailboat and cant wait to learn!

I would presume you could use a cheap SDR dongle and pick it up directly on the PC. Not to discourage people from getting into Radio, Ham and SSB HF but an SDR dongle would be cheap and make a great backup as well. Of course the ongoing Maritime Mobile Net on 14.300 make getting into ham radio worth it for anyone out cruising IMO.

Creative! Yes. Are there no satellites broadcasting weather info? There are lots of disused American satellites from 1970s still floating in space and still perfectly functioning that Brazilians are using instead of mobile phones - discussing football etc. Making a satellite antenna costs pennies.

Hi there! have you tried with an SDR receiver? it connects directly to your USB port on the PC/MAC and it allows the software to process the audio in real time. No audio recording nor short wave receiver required.

How long is your antenna? 50-70 feet is ideal, and keeping it as far away from metal as possible. If had a license and a ham radio you could add email and messaging from your boat.
That's correct, but on our budget and with the space we have, a transmitter wasn't an option. The attena is just a simple dipole that we unravel and hoist up a flag halyard. But our mast isn't event 30 feet, so I don't think we could erect a 50-70 foot antenna anywhere ;)
@@TheAdventuresofTarka - On my Vega I have external chain plates, and clip to an exposed stud inside the cabin for my SSB signal, and it works quite well. Clipping to the backstay might also work well since I know you don't have easy access to your chain plates from inside the cabin. When I used SSB a lot I had a dedicated antenna, but when the antenna was lost during a knock down I never replaced it. If you are receiving static and other environmental noise on the desired channel then your signal strength is sufficient. A better tuned or longer antenna is not always a good idea as it will increase both the noise and signal at the same rate.
I hear the same thing is available via satellite and some have experimented with it using an SDR to receive.
We have a Sat phone, and in theory, we can use it to get grib files, but it's still expensive, and at least with our old phone, quite a hassle.

Why do you record the SSB data? Why not run it into your audio in on Fldigi? Have you thought about a RTL SDR as a back up? That would cover the shortwave bands as well as up to NOAA satellites. You might be able to grab some fly over for maps?
Hey buddy! Unfortunately I can't feed audio directly to my laptop, as I lack the right cable. Interesting idea! At the time I bought the radio I didn't know about SDR, and I haven't been in a position to buy an SDR device since. Shipping is either impossible, expensive, or a big hassle most places we've been.
Will you be sailing to Hawaii or will you bypass it?
