    Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
    I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
    www.theadventur...
    or visit their website directly:
    www.coral.org
    If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:
    theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com
    Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by:
    Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
    Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection
    Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to.

    Your opening music is one of the most enjoyable of all of the sailing vlogs. Very catchy and dream-like (similar to the life you live). Some do a rock anthem that doesn't seem to fit the cruising lifestyle. Yours is perfect.

      Thanks! Early on I had something tropical-house-y, but it just wasn't right. I've always been a big fan of Delos' opening music. Every time I hear that song it takes right back to the moment I realized that the dream could be a reality.

      I wondered the same thing. He is living the dream now with a beautiful and sweet girlfriend. I hate to see him go back home. I get it, it is hard when a loved one dies...been there. But his chance to live his life is now. His Mom will understand and hopefully agree.

      @@bud1971 Every loss is a personal one. I understand from what I read on another site that his loss was particularly difficult. I hope when there is enough healing, that we all can enjoy one of the most calming voices on TH-cam again, with the adventures of Tarka 2.

      I think everyone is a bit curious, and Aaron provided a good answer without getting into too much detail. First understand that we publish on a significant delay, so the content you see now is about 4 or 5 months behind real-time. This is for practical reasons, as we don't have the resources or reliable internet to publish in a just-in-time format.
      Second, it is not our intention to deceive anyone about our plans. The video content tells the story as it happened, even if we're editing it in the future. Thus, we will discuss the reasons for the change in plans in detail in a upcoming episode.
      Sorry for all the confusion, it will all be clear soon!

      @@TheAdventuresofTarka The thing is: it's your boat, your life, your bags to carry. You do what you have to do! I (we) can and do appreciate you sharing these experiences with me (us) as much as you choose to. And we have no say in any of it!
      At some point, I'll have my bucket and I'll go where I want and nobody is going to tell me what to do.
      ps. after reading the above, before hitting "post", I note that it sounds harsh. Sorry if that is the case. I wish you all the best!

    I wonder if part of the coral reef problem isn't related to the over fishing of sharks. Much like the demise of Yellow Stone when the apex predator (wolves) were wiped out. It wasn't until they reintroduced wolves to the park that it began to recover. Great video! Hope all is well with your family. Sailing is in your blood now, I know you'll be back at it once you get your family situation settled. Best wishes!!

    And yes, our Watkins leaks when under heavy rains from the main (Only) hatch up front, and the other 4 smaller side windows also leak under heavy rains. New weather stripping coming soon. Along with haul out, for complete bottom work. 👍💪🤞🙏

    Man I hate to admit this but I’m a little hard of hearing in certain tones and even though I have followed you since your second or third episode and told you your sailing this old mans dream, I have yet to understand what your lady friends name is. I have read comment and tried my best to hear it. Is there any way you could post her name and no not cause I’m weird just frustrating that you mention it a few times in the episodes and I can never quite catch it. Sorry I’m on old sailor (US NAVY), Texan and evidently more deaf than I thought! Thanks for all the adventure sharing and I hope you remember every moment when you get old. Those will keep you smiling for years to come. Thank you son. Enjoy!

    Abiut reducing plastic use: I started taking a little stainless steel screw top container with me when I buy meat from the butcher so that I can avoid plastic, and just get vegetables slung into a reusable bag. Probably not that easy in Panama living on a boat, but still....

    Hey mate! We are soon to hit the big blue on a 27 foot, 1980 Watkins sailboat. We are new to sailing, I have a thousand questions, but can only think of 2 for now, how did you used to get up the mast, when you were solo, and, what’s your average/top speeds on Tarka in knots???

    • @MrRourk
      @MrRourk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to have a Watkins 27. Great for sailing around Florida and the Caribbean. Not really blue water. Beaching is not recommended. However she can get into some shallow water. Expect 3 to 5 knots tops.

    • @outdoorzfam
      @outdoorzfam 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well thanks for the info Fred! Truly appreciate that. We figured because of size, and the amount of people we have board, not a good idea to try anything major. But Florida and the Caribbean for now, which we are still learning to sail, till we get a larger vessel, it’s perfect for us, we do know she does very well in skinny waters, and we learned the very hard way, NOT to beach a Watkins 27, (Horrifying Experience)
