I rebuilt my first trans a th400 behind a turbo ls and it has been perfect for 2yrs of beatings, from watching your videos. Thanks for that! I’m glad u did some 80e videos because I’m gonna do one now. You really have great content man, thanks again.
I literally had shank nail break off trying to remove and I remembered you mentioned welding a ball on one and pulling it out..Whamo it worked and pulled right out lol..Just another thanks for sharing your knowledge Shawn..
Great informational video! I have a 93 4l80e that I might now tear into with less hesitation. 😊 I have intermittent 1st gear when hot. Where do you think I should look first? Solenoid? Internal harness? Thanks! Have a great day!
i watched your reverse servo videos and you explained it i just cant seem to understand how it works wich way the pressure pushes the pin i cant see how pressure can get in there to push the pin either way?
Great presentation, simple and easy to follow. I'm having challenges with my 4L80e. I did a carb swap away from the TBI. I have a TPS from Acculink. It shifts fine around town, but when I get up on the highway it downshifts to accelerate and won't shift back up in to 4th and lock up. If I shut it off and turn it back on it will return to 4th, but the next hill and I'm stuck in 3rd again. I replaced the input speed sensor. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi Shawn, first off, excellent video. I just found your channel today and it has amazing content! Quick question… I have a 4L80E transmission on my 4x4 truck. It died and I had it rebuilt by a local shop. The problem I have with it is whenever the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, the engine RPM would briefly rise 250-350 (aka shift flare) before it shifts into 3rd gear. The 2nd to 3rd gear flare shifts happen 95% of the time when I drive the truck. Here's the bizarre part: I recently got a Check Engine Light: P0751 Shift Solenoid, and noticed the transmission hesitated shifting to 2nd gear until it nearly approached the RPM redline. So, I pulled over the truck, shut off the engine, and restarted it. I drove for about 10 miles and believe it or not, the 2nd to 3rd gear shift flares had disappeared, and there was a noticeable small "bump" feeling for all gear shifts (e.g. 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th). Unfortunately, the next day, when I started up the truck again, the darn 2nd to 3rd gear flare shifts are back almost all the time. Based on your experience, what could cause a flare shift on a 4L80E transmission, and what can I do to fix it? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
I just recently purchased a 1995 chev G30 with the rare 454. Everything is shifting normal but I do get a higher fluid sound when putting it in drive or reverse. I'm not sure if it means the trans is slowly going bad or if it just a normal thing
Great video! I have a 2007 chevy avalanche that came stock with a 4l70e and 6.0 engine. The motor blew and out a used 6.0 with cam upgrade, lifters 2800 stall. Would it be better to rebuild the 4l70e for more power or go with a 4l80e? Thank you sir
Hey there! I know this is an older video - Thanks for the videos, Btw. I have a 4l80e in my 1999 express 3500 van. It has 193,000 mile. It first started to bump/jerk, kinda with a chatter, when down-shifting from overdrive back to 4th I believe. I'm of late, noticing the same from 3rd to 4th, albeit much more slight. I tow a lot, at time up to the 7k range. I'm very easy on the trans, I take off slow and I let the power build evenly. I just hate running in d2 with the rpm's up. I wish I could control when to have overdrive come in and out. I know I'm up for a total rebuild, for sure. Can you recommend internals that are best to be replace no matter the condition of the overall rebuild. I don't want to have to go in again for some little thing that I could have replaced the first time. Actually, I'd like to beef the thing up, as I plan to keep the van for life...... Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
I have a 95 4l80. Attached to valve body is a plate under the dipstick hole. I’d guess it limits how deep the dipstick goes. Any idea or input on that plate
@@mountainsgarage thank you just picked up an 2004 model with 6.0 for my 1985 k20 . Np241c transfer cases going for stupid money this is a big help thanks again.
Would the 6L80E be as durable as a 4L80e and as buildable? I am considering a 2014 Chevy caprice 1sb police car with a 6.0L and hd 6l80e, and wonder what the stock transmission can handle HP wise?
Hi so I have a problem and I can’t wrap my head around it ok… so.. I have a 1995 Chevy k1500 4x4 I never had a transmission problem never not even a leak so I lost my pinion gear in the rear differential so I put it in the garage and put in a new rear differential now it won’t shift in to reverse or drive or park just have the 2nd gear and now it has a leak by the torque converter how can this happen and why please help
Rear end failures often break stuff in transmissions. I'd take it all apart and see what broke. Maybe main shaft. A lot of times the tail housing will break, but that should be obvious looking at it.
I am a novice, but doesn’t your year/make/model have the Allison transmission? Your transmission should be evaluated/diagnosed if it has the oem specifications by an expert.
well you seem to know what your doing here lol i have a 99 silverado 2500 4x4 4l80e this last summer when it was warm it shifted perfect now that its cold when i drive it. it shifts the first time but the second shift is late if i let it warm up for about 10 minutes it shifts perfect no engine light on so no codes i did change the rear speed sensor on the tail shaft but made no difference tranny fluid is clean and full it just dont like the cold weather lol thanks for any ideas
Good Evening! I have a 4L80E that has lots of age and miles on it and it does the same thing. I believe the seals are probably hard as a rock but when it warms up it works fine.
You should show case that sweet boom box in the background.... put the ice ice baby cassette in or better yet the Mc hammer and do the hammer dance .... I’d watch that video 100 times lol

This was the simplest video iv come across
Your a very smart man, I appreciate you sharing this information .🙏
This is wonderful information!!! Keep up the good work!!!
The Fitech stand alone system has to have the 94 and up harness. I used a 93 4l80e in a 1972 blazer and he to change the harness.
Good to know!
More 4l80e please !
Your the transmission wizard thanks Shawn for sharing all your knowledge…
More 4l80 content please

Change the fluid and filter, test/clean the solenoids and clean the valve body

I am a 80E lover, the other is going to eventually make you sad!
Very informative. You got my follow
I have a 91, where would you install a temperature sensor to run a gauge?
Find a spot in the pan that clears inside and weld on a 1/8 NPT bung.
What's up with the 4l80e tail shaft bushings? Ever one I try won't fit after Installed. It's like it need to be reamed after installing.
I had a bunch a while ago I had to hone after install, big pain!

MY 92 GMC SLAMS INTO GEAR WHEN I FIRST START it up. I wonder if it has something to do with the pressure regulator/ wrong fluid type.
My 4L 80 E won't shift from 2nd to third , third to 4th. Replaced harness and both shift solenoids and no change. Thoughts?
So I have a question, my 4l80e in my 95 k2500 has no reverse, yet everything else works fine. Am I looking at a complete rebuild or just rear servo.
Best guess start with checking out what debris is in the pan and the reverse servo. Might get lucky??
Can the tranny shop add a ring for the 4wd vss if there isn’t one there easy enough ?
Yes and now Sonnax makes them, only around $25

Which fluid you recommend for the transmission ? Dex 6 or 3 as listed in the manual?
Depending on the year if it already has Dex 6 I would stick with it.
I’m interested in studying in automatic transmission repair specialist. Why would you recommend me to major in this field ?
A little late on my response, sorry!
Very few mechanics do transmission repair, you will always have work!
GMC SHIFTS VERY HARD, I FEAR SOMETHING WILL BREAK IN THE DRIVE LINE OF THINGS! IT IS A454 DUALLY. DO I NEED A NEW TRANNY?
Pull your connector and make sure it's not full of fluid. Also make sure MAF and TPS are good and plugged in. Good luck

I expect someday as people adapt them high performance parts will be available.

Can you swap the 4l80e plastic thrust washers out for metal? I received both in a rebuild kit, want to know what's best? Thanks!
Yes
How much fluid pressure should a 4l80e have. The converter won't stall and they say the transmission is making to much pressure
I like 180-200psi
My l480e transmission 2 3rd and 4th shift hard intermittently, and sometimes it doesnt for 2006 silverado, any suggestions sir.
👍👍👍
Too bad they can't use the Allison filter.
I don't feel that much towing power, mine is 2009 duramax chevy express.
