    Well done video and excellent mechanical skills! I just did injectors on my '03 CA LB7 (with EGR) and I'm almost sorry I didn't pull the engine. Just kidding, of course. I notice your upper valve covers came right off since they can be a bear. I used a large block of wood and a heavy hammer to pop each end loose. Interesting to see all the bits beyond what I had to remove. Great job!

    That's a lot to remember. It must be annoying to have a wreck motor because of a tiny cheap pin broke. Also even if you notice the oil pressure has gone I guess it would still cost a lot in labour (sorry English spelling) just to fix the dam pin. Good video bro, you have a good mix of content

    I have a 2003 lb7 and it just randomly lost oil pressure, it only has 135,xxx miles on it, it's a learning process for me and working on diesels, I did the injectors myself, but how common does the oil pumps fail on these or would it be something else, and this video helped me alot cause I can't find another video where they are removing the oil pump or even talked about any of that,

    • @mxdirtrider2

    • @Dylan_LB7
      @Dylan_LB7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Duramax oil pumps are extremely simple and reliable and rarely fail its more likely there is a problem with your stepper motor in your gauge cluster.

    • @ne2i
      @ne2i 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge or use the squirt method. ( loosen up the oil pressure sensor while cranking and pull your fuel relay to prevent it from starting)

    These remind me of another pain in the ass that was the Perkins TV8.540M, a marinized tractor twin turbo diesel. The cooling system was a haphazard design, and required frequent service or else you had to buy expensive aluminum housings. Just changing the raw water impeller and removing the sea grass from the tube bundle heat exchangers were excruciating projects. Assembly, like this one was critically sequential, or else..

    Question! will try to be short. had an Lb7 with 400k on it. I did injectors on it twice, second time was rushed and didn't go so well as you'll see. Fired right up and sounded beautiful. In park, sustained 3000+ RPM for a few minutes no problem. no smoke no oil leaks at valve cover, balance rates at idle are 0, +/- .1, great. 2 miles down the road, at about 50 mph, loud knocking noise on passenger side bank and a copious amount of white smoke out of tail pipe, does NOT occur upon restarting engine. Until I reach 50pmh, like clockwork it happens again. but that's not my concern. After a few rounds of this I got rather frustrated and to my everlasting regret, stomped on the throttle after the knocking noise occurred and the engine understandably went dead. re ignition yields the sound of a healthy starter spinning and a very loud thumping noise on passenger side. Engine never fires.
    depending on what I might have done.. I'll pull the engine and tear it down and try to get it running again. Any thoughts on what I did when I stomped on it?

    • @ynotitsme
      @ynotitsme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you ever find out what happened to your engine when you stomped on it? I had the same exact t thing happen to me a week and a half ago. Very dissappointing...

  • @Garth2011
    @Garth2011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great disassembly video. Does the pin that locks the crank gears to the oil pump drive gear have a fix or upgrade so the engine rebuild does not have this flaw built back into it again? Sad that the pin is likely too small in diameter or not the right metal alloy to handle the job. I'm no expert but those oil pumps in gasoline engines seem to have a better design to them.
    How many miles did that engine get before the pin broke? Some of us viewers need to know what years were LB7, LMM etc. Many don't know the code but do know the year.

  • @Qman06
    @Qman06 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That keyway that broke off - isn't that just for alignment purposes and the clamping pressure of the crank bolt keeps it all in place? I've seen similar things happen on timing belt vehicles when the crank bolt wasn't torqued enough. I'm inclined to think the bolt wasn't tight enough and then the slop on the keyway caused it to break off. Great video! Keep up the good work!

    • @jhurley12
      @jhurley12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Quinton Cheatham technically not a keyway, it's a dowel pin. Further keying the crank actually prevents this. And will allow it to hold alot of power, along with an alternate firing cam to relieve the stress off the front of the crank, due to the 1-2-7-8-4-5-6-3 firing order. It's the fire at the end of the order, (3) followed up by (1)-(2) that breaks cranks, almost always at the front. But usually only when adding significant power.

    • @ynotitsme
      @ynotitsme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an 03 LB7 with 275,000 miles, I'mon the 2nd set of injectors. Engine has a lot of blow by so im sure over the years I have washed the cylinders down and probably ruined the rings. I really want to put LLY heads on it when i pull it for a refresh. DO you have any info on this swap. I found a guy on the internet that will take your harness for an LB7 and convert it to an LLY to fit the LB7 truck. Please comment

    Is that engine out of a military truck such as LSSV? I recognize the forest green oil fill tube. Great video as well!

    Great video! You really do a nice job explaining. That's a nice engine stand. Is that homemade or did you buy that? If you bought it, where did you get it? Looking forward to more diesel content!

    Second questions I need to know
    We were asked by our mechanical repairer for buy a long block Sent here to Australia which we did as we thought .
    My son in law here is a mechanic and said to me we got a short block and not a long block which in all honesty I don't know the difference
    Can you please explain to me what we would expect on a short block and a long block ...not a turn key engine
    Thanks for any help given
    Cheers Mick
