He learned about content marketing and SEO by reading the site Copyblogger. He then applied these strategies to his own site, Sober Nation.
Tim decided to transition Sober Nation to a directory model to generate revenue, listing treatment facilities and generating revenue through exposure.
This allowed him to monetize the website in a creative and effective way. And also sparked the idea to start an agency to help related facilities with their marketing needs.
He did a similar thing after acquiring CopyBlogger. Again, instead of taking the traditional ad and affiliate route, Tim takes a different approach.
He uses Copyblogger as a lead generation site for his agency, Digital Commerce.
Tim also highlights the importance of having a core group of trusted employees and a systematic workflow. This ensures that the business runs smoothly and efficiently. He discusses the different revenue models he uses, including free media, front-end products, and high-end services. By diversifying his income streams, Tim has created a stable and sustainable business model.
In conclusion, Tim Stoddart's journey and projects demonstrate the significance of building a business with multiple income streams. By leveraging the success of Sober Nation, Tim was able to establish his agency and attract clients.
He emphasizes the importance of measuring success based on client goals and delivering results. Tim's specialization and finding unique angles in the marketplace have been key to his success.

It makes a huuuge difference to have a guest on who is willing to give specifics. Tim, thank you for the amazing insights - you have without a doubt made this the most useful, insightful and thought provoking NP podcast yet.
Tim dropped a lot of 1000$ bills here. Excellent episode. More power to Tim and may his success 1000-fold. More power to you guys at Niche Pursuits too for being the conduits of actionable wisdom.
Thank you!
Advice about technical SEO and getting the URL structure properly optimized is absolute gold. Fixing technical stuff like that down the road is an absolute nightmare! Where as other stuff like front-end design is much more easy to fix whenever down the road.
Top! One of the best if not the best, podcasts on this channel.
Thanks man.
Not going to lie, I’m in a position in my business career where I want to make a pivot, I’ve had an idea similar to some of what is in this interview and Tim’s words gave me a lot of clarity. Tim I’m currently in the South Florida area, 20 minutes from boca and I can’t thank you enough for sharing your thoughts here. I honestly think you helped me pave the next chapter in my book! If you read this comment @timstodz THANK YOU!
Bring this man back!!
WOW

epic conversation, thanks so much!
Hi Niche, thanks ❤ Bob from UK London
This was awesome but I don't understand one aspect of it and am hoping Tim can explain it 🙏. So you've created this great, free directory and it's generating leads either to you or to the contractors. You now want to charge the contractor for the leads. Are you essentially saying to the contractor, "ok, I was sending you free leads and now you have to pay me for them?" If so, what is the other side of it? "Or else I remove you from the directory" (?)
In other words, why should the contractor start to pay for what they were previously receiving for free (or other contractors are receiving for free)?
Great question. Here's what I do.
In the listings themselves, you have to put the phone number to the contractors business. If a user comes to the website, finds the exact contractor they're looking for and calls them, then great. You can't put "your" phone number in their listing because then you're almost pretending they are you.
So list a direct to the business phone number (you can usually find it on their GMB page) in the listing. But on the top of the website, have a main phone number. So to start, this is just one number that might go to you directly. Or you could get a call tracking metrics account and dynamically change the number depending on where the user is calling from. But it is those calls you're selling.
So in some cases, the contractor might still get free phone calls if someone goes to their listing directly. But, more than likely, the user is just going to call the number on the website.
@@timstodz Thanks!
How would a local directory site like Your Boulder be able to compete with Yelp?
successful directories course???? By Chris ……
Any further details on that as I googled and could not find a course 🙏
32.45min in 👀
I believe he is referring to “Profitable Directories” by Chris Osborne.
OMG!!🤯 Sooooooo many damn gems!!! This was like a 2 Thousand dollar course!!🎉🎉😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it!
I bet there's more to the story
Tim is a brilliant guy and marketer too, very practical, but so many mid-rolls ads, sorry ;)
Like rank and rent smart
Hasn't Google local business killed independent directories? And if not won't they do in a year or two?
umm, did not even think directory sites were still a thing
Copyblogger copied Problogger the Og Darren Rowse😁
He should bring back the look from the thumbnail.
That was in Miami like 8 years ago. My hair grows fast it will be back soon. My problem is that I'm inpatient and stubborn and so sitting in barber chairs annoys tf out of me, so I just cut my hair in my backyard with a pair of clippers.
Plus in that picture I was still running a lot more. I lift a lot more now and I have like 20 more pounds of muscle on me than I did in that picture.
Idk why I'm telling you all this. Bye.
@@timstodz Awesome interview. Tim, did you ever look into Brilliant Directories as a tool to build the directory site? I haven't been able to find anything that would work well.
@@timstodz You didn't mention the glasses, which significantly affect one's look. Also, more muscle shouldn't always result in more facial fat. Otherwise, I buzz my hair at home too for the convenience.
@@Baqsam99 - more facial fat haha? wut? are you trolling me?
@@timstodz Why else did you mention weight gain in reference to a picture that primarily shows your face?
I'he been following Tim on copyblogger for a long time, it's so nice to see him as a guest, nice episode !!
Thanks. :)
