To explain things simply, you have to understand them deeply. Let’s give this man some credit - seems like he has an incredible depth of knowledge on tonal characteristics, utility, applications, and interactions with other gear to be able to explain these so clearly and succinctly.
I don’t even work in hip hop but found this video looking at preamps and giving this guy a follow just for how practical and knowledgeable he is.

I have some issues with the NEVE 1073 preamp UAD. When I set the Gain to about 30-45 I end up with a very quit vocal in my DAW. I really need to touch the Output knob of the NEVE to about all the way 12db to end up at least -18 to -12db in my DAW. What wrong here?

@scott good responses, I always crank up to 35-40db on the neve.
If you were to push the neve past the 40s itll sound way to overcooked.
What I usually do is have the UAD LA2A LEGACY doing about 1db of compression and then using the gain to control how hard im going in the DAW. You could even use the pultech legacy to and just push the knob for clean gain
@youngwhitefresh You are right, the fader for the NEVE 1073 is colored it will add more distortion, smart man thats what I LIKE TO HEAR

Got another question bro Just wanted to ask aswell I was planning on getting the API channel strip and use it strictly for the noise gate for cleaner vocals would I be better off buying c vox and putting that on my chain instead or getting API? I saw someone use it and it completely removed the noise as I’ve only been doing this 3 months I’m still working out of my room (so no treatment) like you were in the video

    • @mixlikenix

Hey! how many dbs do you put in the red knob for the neve ?I also have a sphere and put 45 in the red knob with 12db of output gain in order to get a decent signal for my vocals with peaks of -12dbs, however I think it sounds better when set at 40dbs but then the signal is low with peaks of around -18db. I wonder if it's my sphere mic or if it's normal with every sphere mic 😅 thanks!
