I was the camera operator on Richard’s TG audition many years ago. He was the last audition on that day and it was very obvious when he got in his 911 and drove away that he was going to get the job.

I agree with you both. They've tried to replicate the banter and the relationships between presenters after Jeremy, Richard and James left, but it can't ever be the same.
I joined Amazon Prime to watch The Grand Tour. I reckon that's the reason most people did in the run-up to series 1 of GT being released on Amazon.
@@thefurrykiwi4489 I enjoy the current version of TG, the one with Paddy, Freddie and Chris, but it's definitely not on par with the trio's TG. These days it's okay/decent whereas with the trio it was must watch TV.
@@lwaves I like all three of the new tg hosts but it still feels like they're just completely imitating jeremy/may/hammond with the pranks, I couldn't get into it even with an underlying enjoyment for cars

My childhood would have been quite different if i didnt look forward to seeing Hammond with Clarkson and May on Top Gear Sundays.
Of course it's not well remembered that James wasn't the original 3rd presenter. That was originally a guy named Jason who's surname I have forgotten. He did reviews of cars that were up for auto retail and tried to help viewers find cars for bargain bin prices. He seemed like a cool guy and they were originally gonna keep him on and have James in as well to make four presenters. But then he left and for the first three or so eps of Series 2 it was just Jezza and Hamster. Then they introduced C.Slow as an occasional slot on the show and it went from there

I was born in 1994. I don't remeber a time when I haven't been watching you Mr Hammond. I grew up with you, big respect for the years of tomfoolery
I remember the first time I saw Hammond. In was a Sunday night in 2001, and I was having a look at new Top Gear, to see what it was like. It was clearly different from 'old' Tiop Gear, and not particularly compelling.
Not in 2001, anyway.
Sometime in the second series that began to change.

@@Hoganply Have to agree. I've recently started re-watching TG from season/series one and although the Challenges and Road Trips aren't there, the banter and chemistry between the enjoyable hosts is. Fortunately the show was stocked with enough talented people to make it grow into what it became.

Man. Thank goodness neither of his horrible crashes robbed us of his personality or passion. Especially that first one, a traumatic brain injury like that can completely change someone for life.
The world is such a brighter place with him in it just the way he is.
they should start making review of cars for this youtube channel since they not doing that on amazon anymore
The money isn't there for them to be bothered doing it, they're getting old and i would imagine they'd rather just enjoy life at this point over working
Though James made a amazing piece comparing the Tesla and the Mirai. It was so well made that it could easily be a Grand Tour review.

@@rf7854 It's not as easy as you think and no offense but your post is a little naive. Them being wealthy is irrelevant. Getting sponsors is only part of it and even then, you still have to offer something they want to sponsor. YT does not pay for itself, at least, not until you're one of the enlightened few. Test cars are not free for journalists to try, although they probably would be for the trio. Even so, that still doesn't cover insurance which is massive for filming of any kind. Search out the details for TG and TGT insurance if you want proof. I'm sure there's a video where Andy Wilman talks about it. :-)

From what I recall Jeremy said he had already known James for a long time and wanted him on the show.
May was on old top gear in 1997 i think, so he would have known Clarkson from then
@AlexGRFan97 It's also true that BBC Management were sticking their oar in. Clarkson knew who he wanted, but he wasn't allowed that lineup; that's how they got Jason Dawe, and Clarkson knew that would never work because Dawe was essentially an inferior copy of him, and they needed somebody ... different. May was being tee'd up as the replacement very early

Re: being 7 y.o. and not interested, i remember when i was tiny, waking up early on sundays specifically to watch TG. i wasn't particularly interested in cars, didnt know most of the guests, and didnt have a frame of reference for a lot of the stuff they were saying, but it just was so funny and so beautifully shot, a really well crafted show, idk it has always stood out to me
I could listen to any of these guys forever . Richard probably my fav and strangely I relate too more. To have a lunch with any of these guys and talk about cars would be so awesome .

I really liked this. It shows the more unique layers and compassions of Hammond’s. Along with why he is the personality he is. Turned out well learning about his dreams and interests
4:32 literally all of my friends when i was 7 watched and loved Top Gear, I think Hammond underestimates how wide age-wise the audience of top gear spans
The first time I watched Hammond was when I was really young on his Braniacs science show, I really loved it and was probably the initial spark for my love science which would lead me to studying chemistry as soon as I could in high school. Then I found Too Gear through a friend when I was barely 2 years older than my braniacs days, and I fell in love with it straight away. This also sparked my love for cars and auto-mechanics. I was loyal to Hammond for every challenge that the trio on top gear would go through. I thank you, Hammond, Clarkson and May for being the funniest TV hosts I’ve ever seen and sparking my passion for science and cars.
I moved to England, from the US, in spring of 2005 and can recall stumbling across Top Gear on the TV. I've been hooked ever since. Such a great show. Glad they've been able to keep the three of them together for so long.
The anecdote about how you first got on Top Gear and the call that followed what a moment that must've been! Isn't it incredible how you being your authentic self, with telling the joke was what made all the difference?

You know, Richard, I've been watching you for a while (I won't say how long, it'll date both of us). You're without a doubt my favourite Hamster in the world. By a very long stretch. I appreciate all the great moments you've given all of us, and that goes for all three of you. Thank you.
I have a massive amount of respect for Richard, Jeremy and James. Jeremy was the reason I wanted to be a motoring journalist. I didn't want to be an astronaut, or a cowboy, or any of the other jobs you'd expect a seven year old to be, I wanted to be that guy powersliding a Diablo around an airfield or writing articles about them. I knew what oversteer, understeer and weight transfer was before I even got behind the wheel of a car, all because I watched Jeremy's content at length 20 years ago. :D
I can't imagine top gear nor the grand tour without Hammond ❤️

The cars are great but what makes me absolutely love their Top Gear and The Grand Tour is their chemistry. Their friendship. I love it.
Between the 3 of them, there's always an angle for 2 to gang up on the other. Clarkson: boss, Hammond: short, May: drives slow etc.

I remember back in Top Gear, Richard was doing a landscape painting in front of a river or a lake. He looked very satisfied with it and went on and on about it in front of the camera. But then a bit of wind blew and just knocked the canvas over right into the water. Hahaha I remember bursting my gut at that one.
The Zonda painting...he later said it was like the nature was crashing into it!

To be honest I really am taking Richard Hammond as an idol to me because him as a person is different among others.
Plus I do really love Jeremy clarkson and the way he thinks and the way he expresses the surroundings.
James may.. he's slow , and I need his patience .

It’s hard to notice but Hammond actually a genius. He might even be smarter than James May. He’s just very humble and has a joking, “I’m an idiot” demeanor.
