"Large Father Tophat here!"
Gameplaywise SOR3 is actually the best.
But Musics were so bad in comparison to former titles.. except few tracks.
Atmosphere was weird but the game is deeper more technical. Hidden boss stage looked like a neo Geo game.
Lot of special effects I've never seen on the system.
Really underrated game.
I still listen to sor2 ost in the car.
Same here 👍
do you like Carpenter Brut?
Same
@@mark6302 I love his music
My man.
My Uncle bought me Streets of Rage 3 and Eternal Champions plus the Sega Activator for Christmas in 1995. I also got the movie Heavyweights with Ben Stiller. At age 38 now, I still haven't had a better Christmas than back in 95. Although N64 Chtistmas two years later was pretty awesome too. Being a kid in the late 80s and into the 90s was the best!!! Love you guys!!!
Dude, were the same age and my first band we started in like '97 had songs about both sor & heavyweights. (We had no life experience so all our songs were about movies and video games.) We coulda been bros back in the day.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk Dude that is awesome!! I still play video games! I'm addicted to Streets of Rage 4. Woohoo!!!! Lol
There was a Streets of Rage game between SoR3 and 4. It was a 3D one. But then they renamed it Fighting Force.
And even if it wasn't as great as the classical 2D SoR games, it wasn't so bad, and I enjoyed playing it.
Streets of Rage 3 just needed a few tweaks to be perfect to me. I thought it was a solid sequel though. It felt way darker than 1 and 2 tone wise.
They changed the intro and storyline. They took out Ash. There was supposed to be motorcycle levels that werent in either version. SOR 3 turned out pretty well considering what it could have been.
My friend lent me SoR2 , which lead to purchase SoR3 , i was blown away by the new moves and ability for all the characters to run and unlockable characters
You can actually play as Ash with the Game Genie. SoA for whatever reason also changed his color pallet.
The soundtrack takes a lot of flack for not being the same genre as 1 and 2, but it really is great stuff if you're into harder techno
Exactly. But back then a lot of people weren't ready. This soundtrack suits the game's grittier near cyberpunk aesthetic.
Couldn't agree more.
Which I am
koshiro used randomizer software for composition ideas along with his custom driver for sound chip .
The theme music for the 2 sisters boss battle is so kickass! I love it ♥️
I loved SOR 3, just hated they ramped up the difficulty and I never was able to beat it
I would get to Yamato as a kid and that was the end of the game for me. 😂
Play the Japanese version to experience it how they made it originally. They ramped up the difficulty a lot on the western version.
I didn’t have a reliable friend or sibling whenever I really wanted to play. Everyone got too frustrated and quit bc the US version was pretty ridiculously difficult
same. probably designed that way smh @@FireBomberBassist
I beat SOR3 once with my sister but I got the bad ending due to taking too long in beating Y robot Mr X.
once "dub slash" and "max man" starts playing you'll get the infinite adrenaline rush
I’ve always loved 3 best of all SOR prior to 4. I was aware of everything else mentioned but never knew the soundtrack was an issue until this video. I love how frantic Yuzo and the team made the music as it perfectly matched the bizarre nature of the game.
SOR3 remains my favorite of the trilogy because it’s the most technical. Comparing to Street Fighter, I always said it’s the Third Strike/Super Turbo of SOR: flawed on the surface but definitely a gem on its own with a lot to be found
People hate on sor3 so much but in every way its my favorite one... well until 4 finally came out
Streets of Rage 3 was my favorite of the original tribology, the music was being the main part where it drew me in.
First thing I did when I hacked my megadrive mini was add Bare Knuckle 3.
I enjoyed the 3rd one.
I didn't have a problem with it either. 2 will always be my favorite, but each entry had cool elements to them, I appreciated this one for all the additional fighting features, hidden characters (I could finally play Shiva) etc. Whatever the shortcomings of this entry, I will always be a fan of all the games
The soundtrack is one of the best things about SOR3
I like how you say the game used the same enemy sprites as in SOR2 yet you clearly ignore the 2 (of many) you face immediately at the start of the game🤦🏾♂️
I just realised, Mona-Lisa
In Japan they were known as Yasha and Onihime. Basically Angel and Devil.
Out of the first 3. Sor3 was my fave cuz it had so much content. I was a kid when it got released i can understand why people hated the music cuz it wasn't appealing at the time cuz it sounded too robotic which yuzo koshiro said that he was aiming and thats the premise of the game. He also said sor3 music waa his best work. Last few years people started to appreciate sor3 music
Sor3 music was a masterpiece.
I know that the Shinobi Music during the boss fight may have been an Easter egg, but does it hint that Streets of Rage and Shinobi series take place in the same world?
Yes.. probably same universe 😉
the Sonic racing universe! that All Stars Transformed was pretty fun.
I always like to think so. A lot of the same people from Team Shinobi worked on Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage.
I don’t like when people forget to mention Motohiro Kawashima’s musical contributions. His music really turns the YM-chip to the MAX.
My brother used add player 2 moments before P1 was out of continues. Hard mode was no joke.
This was how I beat the game when it first came out. Normal was Hard in the American version
I tried playing Streets of Rage 3, but the stage with the flashing lights started hurting my eyes, so I stopped playing it at that point, I don't have epilepsy, but I would worry for anyone who does on that stage.
Sor 3 was the first one i ever played and the robots and cyborg stuff made it my favorite to this day.
I don’t care what anyone says, SOR3 is one of my favorite games of all time!
Have you played Streets of Rage 4? When you play it, you realize how much you have missed gaming.
I agree 4 was easily the best in the series loved it @@GOPSlayer
Streets of Rage Remake is the best by far in my opinion.
Exactly 💯 @@GOPSlayer
It's not an official game, therefore it doesn't count 😮@@M.Eufratez
I should have invented some sort of funnel contraption to use in the arcades pumping quarters into these cabinets back in the day. I absolutely LOVED beat 'em ups and fighting games with a passion, especially Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, Final Fight, and Streets of Rage.
All it needed was better music, no robots, and more levels.
I had fun playing Streets of Rage 3 with friends during my childhood. One thing that my friends and I often wondered was why Blaze looked nothing like the Streets of Rage 2 artworks. Her outfit didn't even match these artworks either. Part 3 fixed this though because she actually shared the same look in game.
Personally always think 3 the best from previous. Still didn't get why some praises 2 over it, but then again, I always played the JP version back in the day. While I never understood what those JP test are, it's the game core what's matter. It would be years later when I learned about the international releases, being retitles as "Street of Rage" which imo not very impressive as opposed to Bare Knuckle which hits hard by the pronounce alone. Then there's those many cuts on those international releases. No wonder 3 was heavily panned out there, it would probably get way better reception if it stays like how the JP version does.
I was happy to see Streets of Rage 4 out but was turned off when paid DLC came out. Thankfully, I got gifted the GOG version and never upgraded to the version that has ads on the menu to purchase the DLC.
Luckily I had bare knuckles 3.. I had all 3 of them and the 3rd part is my all time favorite. The music is awesome, I don't care who says what.
Most definitely.
I always loved the music in club section of stage 2.
People love to trash the music in this game, but no song on 16 bit hardware could ever compare to that club track
SOR3 was great. The soundtrack was not as good as part one or two. But it was excelent experimental music. Those acid and IDM vibes where way ahead of it's time.
I still think that SOR 1 has the best 16bit music of all time 🤘🏽i had to stop this vid and play SOR3 i got to stage 3 and an hour just passed by, ok back to the vid…Continue
So a Japanese dojo level out of place in a martial arts beat em up game? 😂
flaws and all, i still love SOR3. the first genesis game i had for the system.
I could almost see Ash being removed from the US version because people were afraid he’d turn their kids gay.
I had already forgotten that it existed. Then I saw the kangaroo and remembered.
I like this soundtrack. i never played the game, but it's impressive since fm synthesis requires so much musical experience to make it shine. Yuzo koshiro and motohiro kawashima are impressive maybe aphex twin will be on the new streets of rage soundtrack?
The Japanese version was great. The U.S. version was atrocious
What are the differences?
@@wutang5795the u.s game did have a harder difficulty than the Japanese version. But it was also censored. That's the differences I know so far.
They improved gameplay and bugs in USA version
The difference is negligible.
@@wutang5795 most games of this era had minor differences but they basically tried to ruin SOR3 in the west. Don’t listen to these other people, I’ve played both a lot. The hardest difficulty on the Japanese version is easier than easy mode in SOR3. You were supposed to be able to beat the game with one credit. Also if you don’t die then you’re supposed to build up a star meter that levels up your blitz attack. Blaze’s max level blitz attack is crazy. But SOR3 is so hard you’ll probably never even figure this out.
SoR3 was in line with SEGA games that launched around its time. The story and lore helped moved the series along just like Rushing Beat 3/Peace Keepers.
Unfortunately, The Peace Keepers had a terrible localization, so the story was meaningless at the end of the day.
@@dianak5519 True, but my point still stands fro what the 3rd game did.
Streets Of Rage Remake is the only version that anyone would ever need
I think Ash could come back if he's redesigned. He can still be gay and flamboyant whilst still having a proper fighting style.
Those robots near the end of Streets 3 is more like RoboCop than Terminator. Never mind you finally mentioned that. 😊
Streets of Rage 3 is a masterpiece. It has the best battle system of the original trilogy. Period. The OST was different, but still brilliant. People just reacted negatively because it wasn't the same style as the first two games. It fit the darker tone of the plot and stage designs. The only negative mark is how much the US version butchered it. If you focus purely on Bare Knuckle 3, the game is the best in the series imo. The outrage was so bad that even the developers of 4 mostly ignored 3 and regressed the gameplay back into SOR2.5. It's quite a shame.
What I recall about this game was that most reviewers were furious over the censorship in the Western release. *Removing* the gay character was a major sticking point (showing how things have flipped in super dork culture) and there was a massive freakout over the music.
I don't recall much annoyance about Blaze getting jacked for the third one relative to what she looked like in the first game. That would probably be the meltdown today.
regarding localization, I asked the late Michael Latham (the creator of Eternal Champions) about this several years back. This was all marketing's doing.
What exactly did he say?
Lessons to learn from Streets of Rage 3:
1. *Censorship is Evil* and should never be tolerated.
2. Arbitrary changes for the sake of change is dumb - especially when the changes are inconsistent.
3. *Localization is Racism* - just translate accurately or f-off.
4. The only way to truly play Streets of Rage 3 is with ROM hacks & mods which returns the game to what Bare Knuckle III is.
Is Ash in the Japanese version of BR3 on the Sega Collection for PS4? If so is it the same method to unlock ?
Axel's color palette swap was a deal breaker
Hahaha, I totally forgot about the Ash character
Didn't even realise it had any hate. I prefered it to SoR2 as it expanded the move list. Being able to run and do moves after dashing added alot more to it.
21:00 I can't remember so well so please forgive me but, with the Megadrive/Genesis cartridges, if you imported a cartridge from another region, didn't you have to "shave" (cut) the cartridge on both sides to "fit" your console? (I'm sorry, this is going way back but I heard something like this needed to be done because of the shape of the cartridges/slots of different regional consoles. Can anyone clarify? Thanks bros 👍
I enjoy every SoR game, but the music on the 3rd one is my only complaint
The Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3 is available in the Sega Classics Collection for XBox, Switch and PS4.
Speaking of Streets of Rage... and since you've been putting out content for these games again.
You've covered the Remake & 2X fan-made games in the past, wonder if we should get an update on X which is 2X's new name for future updates, as well as finally covering New Era... which the version 3.0 upcoming update is looking mad promising, a fan-made SoR game that also supports modding & 4 player online. High recommend on covering New Era, even pre-version 3... which is and was already shaping up to probably be one of the best SoR fan-made experiences.
I never could beat it as a kid, the bulldozer mini boss always took like 2 lives from me. But recently replayed as an adult on a Sega simulator console. It’s still tough, but after some practice I learned the patterns and could get the official ending. Pretty sweet after all those years
The game starting out with its first level in broad daylight was an instant red flag for me
There’s a copy of this, no book for £120 in CEX near me.
I picked up the Megadrive Collection for PS3 and it features all 3 SoR games.
I had no idea there was outrage. I loved it. For me there was only Rage. Nothing was out. Also, I can listen to “Dub Slash” on an endless loop for the rest of my life.
SoR2 had the best soundtrack for sure of the 3, but SoR3 was my favorite due yo the storyline and additional hidden characters.
I remembered unlocking Shiva accidentally as a kid and playing this with my dad who love playing as Axel. I of course used Skate.
Still enjoy playing SoR3 to this day, although i never played the Japanese version and i always wanted to.
If you can, find a translated version of Bare Knuckle 3, that's the best way to play the game
SOR3, at the end of the Genesis era, needed to play it safe rather than be experimental. It needed to look, play and SOUND like a SOR game. Why it failed was because it didnt hit the mark on the third requirement...the sountrack is a major part of the experience. The difficulty I could have handled as long as I was rockin' to some killer tunes but since we weren't, the whole experience became unworthy of our time spent playing it. 🤷♂️
I love that Sega still took Final Fight and did it better on a home console
Bare Knuckle III introduced some quality of gameplay improvements, allowing most if not all playable characters to run, the ability to dash vertically, and changed the way special attacks work to reduce the amount of the life bar used if the player is patient enough. Though the music isn't as catchy as the first two entries.
Streets of Rage III has a bugfix here or there when compared to Bare Knuckle III, but the irritating choices to change the characters' outfit colours, put the difficulty through the roof, remove one or more unlockable characters and butcher the story kill my enjoyment of the game.
I'll live with the bugs in BKIII.
Hey man, I was just wondering when Are you going to cover ''Ultimate Double Dragon"
Been really looking forward to that one, loved the ''Legend Of The Double Dragon'' one!!
I loved SOR 3. I’ll never understand the hate towards it.
That same sentence could be said about many things in the 90's.
It was a lot of things. the censorship, the unbalanced difficulty in the western versions, the broken audio in the PAL versions , the music.... there are lots of things to criticize. Honestly, the music issue is because Koshiro was trying to get sounds out of the Mega drive that it just wasn't capable of with the sound driver they were using. An example of how the genre he was trying to imitate could sound with the right sound driver is the Adventures of Batman and Robin. That game uses a custom sound driver and the music is very similar in genre to what Koshiro was going for in SOR3. With all that said, from personal experience with SO3/BK3, the music grows on you if you play it enough. There is no doubt that the soundtrack matches the chaotic and fast paced gameplay of the game.
regarding difficulty, While the western versions were too hard, BKIII was too easy. Actually, the western versions could have been even worse as well. There is a prototype of the US version that is even harder than the final version!
Adam and max was suppose to return playable that's why I bought it in the first place smh biggest disappointment in my life
Sor3 is the best out of the mega drive series, I was 9 when I got it . I had no idea about the game being censored and story changes so all of that didn't mean anything to me. I just took the game as it was. IMO tops sor2 in every way.
Part 3 was clutch and i used to love playing all three in order and when i found out about Sor remix my mind was blown! 😂😎💯I still play the remix because i love how well bombergames put it together 💪🏿
Because the Tokyo club scene music they used. It's not good, or it doesn't sound good on the Genny sound chip
alot of the tracks are great- i think many people who say it's got bad music haven't actually heard the entirety of each game's soundtrack.
that being said- while playing the game, the Genesis cuts out layers to make room for SFX & you end up losing most of the groove haha!
I'm so glad we had the bare knuckle import instead of streets of rage 3 growing up. It was class
Great game
idgaf the char select theme for sor3 is godlike and nothing will ever change my mind
You don't care so much, you felt the need to share that...
Please do videos on the two D&D beat em ups, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, the scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle
To better understand the pressure that was present on Ancient at the time in I993, Bare Knuckle III was in development at the same time as The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis), this is ultimately the reason for why both games have Demo or Prototype Tracks that were not properly converted to their respective soundfonts that you can still listen to in the Sound Test and you truly have to commend Yuzo Koshiro and company for working Double Time and change to get both of these completed in a timely manner; as for the production handicaps of Bare Knuckle III, the axing of the extra content (Ash, as well as Round 02 and 07's Motorcycle segments, as well as Round 06's Underground area that was fortunately restored in as close to its original vision in Bare Knuckle III DX) may very well have been a mixture of Time Costs and Quality Control, and looking further at matters I think that I wouldn't be wrong today to say that is a convincing truth:
~ Even if it has never been explicitly stated by developers at Ancient and Sega Consumer Research and Development 03, Ash is most likely a direct reference to Glenn Hughes of The Village People, his Leatherman design was prominent in the I970s and he was still using it at this time before he left the band in I996; this being said though, Ash's gameplay is not properly polished, many of us wouldn't be able to truly witness his peak gameplay capabilities until Bare Knuckle Remake (Streets of Rage Remake) and that alone should be enough to tell us how much was left on the table because he clearly was not ready for American Primetime. Had he not been cut out in the Censored releases, I feel Ash would be more similar to his BK Remake counterpart, he is a very Technical character to master in III because of the precision that you need with every one of his actions and an optimal version of him would've made him far more than viable to be incorporated in the International builds that he would've become a fixture right away.
~ Round 02 and 07's Motorcycle segments presumably had to be axed due to the code for them not being optimized in time for launch, it is believable at this point that these would've been this game's equivalent to the Horse and Surfing segments in The Super Shinobi II (Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master) and if there are some overlaps in their handing then I wouldn't be surprised; we still need to get the Prototype ROMs that have these intact, there should be at least Two ROMs to look out for (the one with Round 02's segment should predate the one with Round 07's by a few months, given their dynamic differences in Menu Visuals) and we might need to get help from current and former members of the Gaming Press who covered Bare Knuckle III's development throughout Mid to Late I993 (if not Early Quarter 0I of I994).
~ Round 06's Underground segment getting shelved was probably also the end result of the area not being polished enough in time for launch, the area is still very rough in older builds of Bare Knuckle III DX (despite how much effort was put in to get it to work) and it truly shows how ambitious this area was originally supposed to be; no matter what, the Poison Gas would've still activated before Axel and company made it out of Mister X's building, the escape from the building is incredibly brutal and if you can manage to do this without losing a single stock then you will have truly mastered this game's handling and routing.
Streets of rage 2 was the best
Just a tiny small correction in your video, in order to play as Victy also known as Roo the kangaroo you need to defeat the clown, and only the clown and he will escape, if you defeat him first he will not join you, in your video you killed him first with axel lol
If you input a code in the title screen you can start the game with Roo
Adam should have returned as a playable character in Streets of Rage 3
Not as good as Streets of Rage 2 and hard as balls, but still a really good game.
They tried to sneak that flamer Ash into the game and all hell broke loss lol
I actually liked sor3 the best it's not as stiff as 2 other than the sound track witch is not bad everything else was an upgrade I never agreed with people saying it ain't as good
SOR 3 is definately an aquired taste. Ultimately I really came to appreciate the US version after completing it. The ability to run and dodge up and down plus all the additional moves was aweome for mobility and crowd control, making it play the best out of any of the 3 entries. Its still not my favorite entry because its a little too drawn out overall. I think the core combat is the best it ever was, at that time, however. The music kind of grew on me too, though not near the extent of previous games, but it does fit the theme pretty well. The game has some nice looking areas, like the construction area with debris blowing around. Some nice atmosphere. Though the colors looked more dull then previous entries to me. My biggest issue wasnt the extra challenge, but how it was implemented. It feels like your fighting waves and waves of enemies for an especially long time before it lets you inch the screen. The bosses seem to have alot more health and fights can really drag on. A good example is the samurai bosses. Theres 3 of them and they have multiple health bars each. I feel like sections over stay consistantly. Since these bosses can only be hit at very specific openings, this can really be tedious. It was satisfying once I really mastered crowd control and that was definately my favorite aspect of the game, not so much the boss fights. There is a little too much of the same enemy types thrown at you in waves. Enemy types are mixed up but you spend ALOT of time fighting the same enemies before you can advance the screen. Prefer the pacing of the first 2 games. Some bosses really exploit the old Hit and Run or hide off screen tricks that never enhance these types of games for me. For anyone interested I went over the practice process and all the details of my playthrough in this tutorial:
th-cam.com/video/GhnpRrUwvsc/w-d-xo.html
I show all the 1 Up locations and go into detail about why I think Zan was a great character for a first time playthrough.
the problem also was it was double hard in the U.S. then it was in Japan to make more coin to be spent
One of my biggest problems was the repetition of the stage 1 theme i mean come on really thats what theyre gonna use for the bosses especially Shiva i would have preferred to hear his sor2 theme rather than the stage1 theme
I never heard one person that played the game complain about the music at all.. They all said it was too much like part 2 and too quick
I'm not gonna lie Crazy Train and Ash theme are 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I played all when I was a kid.
And SOR3 seemed so better that I never wanted to play SOR1 or 2 anymore.
But yeah. The soundtrack is like as if made by the same IA that made Will Smith eating spaghetti
Best beatemup ever
SoR III was my favorite, still is. Granted- when I was a kid cyborg scientists was a VERY easy way to win me over.
Specially if you are a playing alone, 3 is by far, the best.
@@HeathenDance I had no friends! This may have had an effect. haha
I played SOR3 before 2 and even 1 as a kid, so my nostalgia for 2 isn't nearly as strong as those who grew up playing 2 before 3. Without SOR2 as a reference, I thought SOR3 was fine, certainly a quality beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis to put up against the poor SNES Final Fight port (including the "Blockbuster Video-exclusive" version Final Fight Guy that replaced Cody with Guy) or even either of its questionable SNES-only sequels, but for nostalgia reasons I wouldn't necessarily put it up against the SNES port of Capcom's Knights of the Round or even the Sega CD port of Final Fight. Once I got a hold of the SNES port of Konami's TMNT Turtles in Time back then, however, the convo immediately became "Streets of What?" "Who's Fight?"
To me, the gameplay was the bigger problem. The controls on SoR3 were a lot less tight. Skate got a giant nerf, Blaze and Axel became floaty to play. The gouge meter was way to punishing and only reliant on time to fill, wich made u never use your specials properly or without getting a massive health loss.
Bear Knucle 3 seens better, but i dont think would be enought
I actually like Streets of Rage 3. It was kind of difficult to complete. I like a challenge 🔥.
Some of those tunes on SOR3 are headache inducing.
This game needed more time to be refined and less meddling from Sega of America.
Bare Knucle 3 was the true sequel.
SOR 3 was hard even in normal mode sucks that if you put the game on easy the game ends after stage 5 dont get me started on the jet pack boss and his rocket pack buddies who continue spawning until you beat the boss
Before I watch this video. I remember me and my friends seeing a remake of the 2nd game with just different characters. Still same levels just longer. Wasn't worth the £40 - £55 price for a game that was already more likely back in your home.
I feel like people were too critical of SOR3. It was a classic IMO I liked the music, i knew they were going with a rave type of feel. But SOR3 and Remake are my preferred SORs.
And yet the most expensive.
Sor, the series that actually allowed me to wear a yellow raincoat w/ a green mohawk, and think i looked rad af.
I loved streets of rage 3...but I played bare knuckle 3 instead of the US version...they had a translation too
I like the JP version of SOR3/BK3. There was no need to change it.
